Message from the Rabbi

Rabbi Hirsh lies on his hospital bed, hiscongregants and family nearby, waiting to hear the dying words of their dearleader and father. The rabbi's attendant takes a cup of milk, goes outside tohis car, adds a splash of whiskey, and sneaks back inside. "HereRabbi", he says, "drink this; it'll be good for you."

Rabbi Hirsh takes a sip of the milk, his eyes opena little wider, and he sits a little straighter.

"Eh hem", he clears his throat and motions his family and followerscloser. "Listen carefully. Don't sell the cow!”

One of the Torah’s most practicallessons in human decency can be found in this week’s Torah portion: “When youwill see the donkey of your enemy trapped under his burden and you will betempted to refrain from helping him, you shall surely help him!”

Chassidic teachings explain what thisdirective means on a spiritual and psychological level:

The “donkey of our enemy” refers to thepowerful inner enemy we encounter every day–our animalistic soul. Thisferocious animal within, is responsible for all our physical lusts, desires, and addictions—the things that get in our way and try to prevent us from doing theright thing. Naturally, we are driven to label our “donkey” the enemy, and dismisshim entirely.

Chassidus explains that whiletreating our instincts derisively, and viewing them as the “donkey,” is prudent,it is not a secure, lasting solution. At best, it is merely a temporary fix. Suppressingour inner bogeymen will eventually fail. We all know this from personalexperience. Strong feelings of the heart don’t just go away; they fester and growand eventually erupt like a powerful volcano.

The only lasting, healthy, long-termsolution is alluded to in this verse: “…you shall surely help him [the donkey].”We need to stop viewing our “donkey” as the enemy; rather we must see him as apotential ally. With the right attitude we can transform our animalistic desiresinto our greatest strengths. If we choose to look beyond the surface, we willdiscover that they contain great, unbridled energy. By harnessing the wild“donkey,” we will discover that he is not in fact an enemy, but our greatestfriend.

Gears (animated)The Fast of Esther

To commemorate the Fast undertaken by the righteous Queen Esther before her harrowing approach to King Achashvairosh to overturn the horrid decree of the evil Haman, we engage in a fast. Queen Esther fasted for three days, but we only fast for one. Thursday, March 9th from 4:49am – 6:18pm. We are taught that fast days offer us the best possible opportunity to return to our Creator.

Purim! Purim! Purim!

Purim in Mexico.jpg

This year’s Purim theme is “Purim in Mexico!” We figured if we are going to celebrate with our amigos from the south we better do it before they build the wall! Now, what will a Purim in Mexico Fiesta look like? It will be muy grande wonderful! Not only will we have plenty of authentic decorations, but perhaps more importantly we will have authentic Mexican food (muy deliciouso). Our master chefs of Mexican cuisine, led by the incomparable Kayla Perez, will create a truly delectable menu that will keep your mouth watering long after the meal is over. The meal will feature Posole, Pico de Gallo, Fajitas, a Beef and Vegetarian Taco Bar, Chips and Guacamole, and much more.

In addition to the great food we will have lots of Purim fun including, games, entertainment (aka games, pinatas, costume contests, and the Rabbi telling jokes), music, prizes, and so much more. PLEASE COME IN COSTUME! Yes indeed; costume parties are so much fun – so please dress up in your most hilarious costume (or not).

The Fiesta begins at 5pm on Purim Day, Sunday, March 12th. The cost to attend is $25 per adult and $10 per child (3-12). Reservations are necessary and are made by calling 760-943-8891 or by sending an email to RabbiE@ChabadatLaCosta.com.

And be sure to join us on Saturday night, March 12th at 7pm for our evening Megillah Reading and party. It too will be lots of fun as we ‘boo’ the wicked Haman. After the reading there will be some absolutely delicious Hamentaschen for everyone to enjoy! COME ONE, COME ALL!

Haftarah Thought

By: Gabbai Harold Reisman

Kings II  11:17-12:17

In non-leap years, if Shabbat before Rosh Chodesh Adar is Parshat Mishpatim, the regular Maftir and Haftarah are replaced with readings of Parshat.Shekalim. The Haftarah speaks of Johoiada the Kohen who led the destruction of idols and established proper administration of the Temple. Jehoash became king (at age 7) and reigned for 40 years. Under his tenure, a novel method was established for collecting money for Temple repair (possible the first pushke).

The Parshah of Shekalim is the first of four that leads us through four stages of preparation for Pesach. The Haftarah reminds us that both the government and the priesthood must be beyond reproach and must act as proper guides for all Jews - in charitable giving, in proper use of funds and in every person's thoughts and actions in all the weeks leading to the great holiday of Pesach.

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email info@ChabadatLaCosta.com your request.

Minyan Shaping Up

We are most proud to announce that our morning Minyan is looking good! In fact, we got a Minyan every day this week. The success is a direct result of the increase in our core group of committed participants. A daily Minyan is a very important service provided by a shul to its local community. Praying with a Minyan is considered a great Mitzvah as it helps our prayers effectiveness (ask the Rabbi for a more complete explanation). It also allows those who need to say Kaddish to do so properly.

We are facing a challenge, as in the coming weeks a couple of our regulars will be out of town (going to Yeshiva programs). We need a couple of more people to step forward and fill this gap to make sure we do not lose momentum. Can you make a commitment to our daily Minyan?

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to info@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
