Message from the Rabbi

Moshe Rabinowitz fled Germany in the late 1930s. In preparation, he sold all his assets, converted them to gold, and had five sets of solid gold teeth made.

When he arrived in New York, the customs official couldn’t understand why anybody would have five sets of gold teeth.

“We Orthodox Jews use separate dishes for meat and dairy, but I am so kosher that I also have separate sets of teeth,” he explained.

The customs official shook his head and said, “That accounts for two sets of teeth. What about the other three?”

“Us Jews use separate dishes for Passover, too, so I need two more sets for the holiday—Passover meat and Passover dairy.

“And what about the fifth set?”

“Well, to tell you the truth, once in a while I like a ham sandwich.”

One of the most common complaints I hear about keeping kosher and other Torah laws is that they are far too restrictive and oppressive.

Pirkei Avot – Ethics of Our Fathers, which we read on Shabbat afternoons throughout the summer months, directly addresses this point: “There is no free individual, except for he who occupies himself with the study of Torah.” (Pirkei Avot 6:2)

At first glance this seems like an outlandish statement. Yes, it is fair to say that Torah gives us the tools to make good choices, or that it teaches us ethical behavior, but granting us freedom sounds a little far-fetched. If anything, the Torah seems rigid with discipline and heavy with restrictions that curtail our freedom!

True freedom, however, is a state of mind, which we can achieve only after we free ourselves from internal oppression—the addictions, lusts, and desires which control us from within.

This deeper understanding of freedom is accomplished through meticulous adherence to the lifestyle outlined in Torah, which helps us control our inner bogeymen. By submitting ourselves to the rigorous discipline of Torah we can achieve peace of mind and a meaningful, profound freedom.

Difficult Words at a Difficult Time

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

What a terrible and sad week it has been in this country and in Europe, as racial strife has again reared its ugly head. Can you imagine?! Neo-Nazis are on the march… still. Memo to all the Neo-Nazis out there; ‘YOU LOST!’ Your hero, Adolf Hitler, brought misery and suffering to a large percentage of the world population with a disproportionate amount falling on Jewish heads. Interestingly, but not surprising to students of history, while the Nazis brought misery and suffering on a massive scale to huge swaths of the globe, the German People itself, probably suffered more than any others. Indeed, tyrants always start by bringing suffering to others but end by bringing suffering to their own supporters. It happens every time. When will they finally learn?!

Thank G-d, we live in the Land of the Free! Thank G-d, we live in a country that is long on generosity, kindness, and justice. Thank G-d, we live in a land that long ago banished the lunatic White Supremacists (Imagine! Actually believing that one’s race makes him/her better than another! PURE STUPIDITY), to the extreme fringe of society. Yes, even one Neo-Nazi is troubling, but let’s keep things in perspective, they are so far marginalized as to be inconsequential to Americans and America. In fact, if not for the media giving them their 15 minutes of fame they would be gone completely, in my opinion.

I am afraid that we Jews are so scarred by the Holocaust and the destruction wrought by the Nazis (and who can blame us?), that we are neglecting to look at the other side of the coin. These days, it is not the Neo Nazis we need fear. The danger to the Jewish people and the West is coming from the other direction, and it is coming fast!

Just a couple of weeks ago an Imam in Davis, California (about 500 miles from HERE) spoke from the pulpit and he read directly from the Quran. He quoted the Quran that exhorts Muslims to murder Jews. He read it in front of a group of Muslim worshippers and it was recorded. He later apologized saying that his words were taken out of context (they weren’t, they were direct quotes). There was nary a peep as this Muslim preacher called for the destruction of our people. Yet, it seems, the media doesn’t feel that is newsworthy. Is Jewish blood still cheap then?!

The Neo Nazis are thoroughly evil, foolish people. They are not in power. They are nowhere near power. Should we keep our eyes on them and do what we can to thwart them? Of course! But the type of resources that we are expending fighting an enemy without teeth is profoundly troubling because there is another enemy with bared fangs and extended claws already attempting to murder our people.

Just yesterday this murderous, Islamist ideology, reared its ugly head again in Barcelona. The murderer did exactly what the Imam in Barcelona called for. Has anyone from the mainstream media connected the obvious dots? I think not. Should we be fooled and follow as ‘sheeple’ likewise not connecting the dots? I think not!

Don’t get distracted, my dear friends. We cannot afford to be looking one direction when the real and present danger is coming from the other direction completely. There are fringe elements on both sides of the political divide. Neither side is our friend. Both want to harm the Jewish people either by directly calling for our destruction or through targeting Israel. Right now, however, the bigger threat (BY FAR) is from those who seek to destroy Israel.

Sadly, the mainstream media has chosen sides (and it’s not ours) and covers and misreports on the truly evil deeds of the anarchists/communists/Islamists. The tyranny of Islamism, anarchism and communism is a much bigger threat to our ability to be Jews and have an Independent Jewish State, than any Neo Nazis right now. Be vigilant! Be informed. Don’t buy into the false narrative of the mainstream media. Think with your head, not your heart.

We, as Jews, must remember that neither extreme is our friend. Really, we must remember that we must rely on Hashem, and only Hashem. No politician (from either party) is going to save us.

G-d bless and good Shabbos!

Haftarah Thought

By Gabbai Harold Reisman

Isaiah 54:11-55:15

The prophet begins by speaking of the "afflicted, storm-tossed one..." The people were not consoled since redemption is long overdue.

In this short Haftarah, the navi promises that the punishment of exile will serve as atonement for sins and that redemption can come quickly and spectacularly.

Hashem promises (v. 55:3): "Incline your ear and come to Me, and you will be rejuvenated..." Contemporary life offers diversions, disruptions and temptations. Here is a clear path to self-improvement and to a rich and meaningful life. The path is given and the choice is detailed. Only the individual can make the appropriate selection for his own, and Klal Yisrael's/the Jewish people’s, future. The High Holidays are coming soon. When should we make the correct decision, if not now?

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email your request.

Minyan Shaping Up

We are most proud to announce that our morning Minyan is looking good! In fact, we got a Minyan every day this week. The success is a direct result of the increase in our core group of committed participants. A daily Minyan is a very important service provided by a shul to its local community. Praying with a Minyan is considered a great Mitzvah as it helps our prayers effectiveness (ask the Rabbi for a more complete explanation). It also allows those who need to say Kaddish to do so properly.

We are facing a challenge, as in the coming weeks a couple of our regulars will be out of town (going to Yeshiva programs). We need a couple of more people to step forward and fill this gap to make sure we do not lose momentum. Can you make a commitment to our daily Minyan?

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing’. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
