Message from the Rabbi

Three men pace in the hospital waiting room, their wives about to give birth.

A nurse approaches the first and announces, “Congratulations! You’re the father of twins!”

“Wow! What a coincidence, I work for the Minnesota Twins!” answers the new father.

Soon the second guy gets his good news, “Congratulations! You’re the father of triplets!”

“Strange!” he says, “I work for the 3M company!”

The third man looks pale and shaky as the nurse starts in his direction. The other two look concerned. “What’s wrong?”

“I work for 7 Up!”

One of the most striking Biblical scenes is that of Abraham, the very first Jew, walking side-by-side with his son Isaac.

Even a cursory reading of the passage reveals a narrative that clearly recognizes the majesty of this scene, as it lovingly repeats the verse, “and the two walked together,” over and over. The implies that not only did they walk together in the physical sense, but more importantly, they bonded spiritually. They were truly of “one mind and one heart”. The father did not send his son ahead to do his own thing; he walked with him, in unison, setting a good example for his son.

Like our noble patriarchs, we must walk shoulder-to-shoulder with our children, setting a good example for them. When we encourage our children to go to shul, we must be there too, so they can sit beside us. When we ask them to lead charitable lives, we must make sure we are giving charity ourselves. If we encourage our children to do one thing, but do something entirely different ourselves, our words are entirely ineffective.

Great Debates in Jewish History Off to a Great Start

6-Part Series Continues November 7th

Debate and disputation are not only encouraged within Judaism but reside at the very heart of Jewish history and theology. Chabad at La Costa in conjunction with the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) presents Great Debates in Jewish History, a six-session course exploring six fundamental conflicts that pit the greatest Jewish minds against each other--six instances of vastly divergent perspectives from throughout our history, including several that remain questions for us today.

Discover a stirring and surprising account of Judaism’s intellectual history, from the ancient to the modern-day; as you relive epochs rich in narrative that provide fascinating context for six of the most monumental intellectual and theological debates in our history.

The parade of characters presented in this course spans two millennia of biblical, rabbinic, and modern disputation, reflecting the panorama of Jewish history with its monumental political, ethical, and spiritual challenges.

This excellent 6-part series, with each individual class understandable by itself, begins on Tuesday, October 31st and continues for six consecutive Tuesdays from 7-9pm. For further information call 760-943-8891 or log onto to www.chabadatlacosta.com.

Haftarah Overview

By: Gabbai Harold Reisman

Kings II  4:1-37

The Haftarah has two separate, but strongly related, stories. Both correspond to events in the Parashah. The comparison between Sarah and the Shunamite woman is clear.  Both were childless, both desired an heir, both were then blessed with a child. The resurrection of the collapsed child and the saving of the life of Issac are parallel tales. A promised child is born late in life and then his life is spared.

In these miraculous events, the Prime Mover was not human, it was Hashem that acted through individuals. In these instances, life was initiated and life was continued due to prayer and strong belief. It is an ongoing lesson that we often forget - both the Parashah and the Haftarah offer examples for us as eternal reminders.

Weekly Class Schedule

Daily Following Morning Services – Tanya – Chabad Chasidic Philosophy with Rabbi Elia

Tuesday: JLI – Great Debates in Jewish History – 7pm

Wednesday: Portion of the Week – 7:30pm

How We Spent Our Holidays

Baruch Hashem, thank G-d, we had a tremendously successful (and busy) month of Tishrei! Over the Holidays we had community candle lighting events for the women (more than 300 candles lit - ON TIME). We hosted over 1000 people in our Sukkah throughout the holiday. Including both Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur we had more than 500 people come through our doors.

We hosted 17 communal meals and Kiddushes, including both nights and days of Rosh Hashanah, Erev Yom Kippur, post Yom Kippur, both nights and both days of the 1st days of Sukkos, lunch and dinner on an intermediate day of Sukkos, both day lunches for Shmini Atzeres and Simchas Torah, and of course our fabulous Simchas Torah banquet. All told well ‘north’ of 1000 meals were served (and all of it was delicious!).

Our most sincere thank you to Naomi Alter, Sheila Lebovitz, and our entire corps of volunteers!

Special Wishes

HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes go out to all of those celebrating their birthdays this week!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY wishes go out to all of those celebrating their anniversaries this week!

WE REMEMBER David Eilfort, Faye Infeld, and all of those who have Yarzeit this week.

May Fran Sekela, and Roz Mintz be blessed with a full and complete recovery!

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing’. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to info@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
