Message from the Rabbi

This week we read of our ancestors’ travels in the desert. They were often on the move, following G-d’s cloud, never sure where they would next make camp. Yet they followed with faith.

Many years later, G-d would express His appreciation for our faith through the prophet Jeremiah: “I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved Me and followed Me through the wilderness, through a land not sown.”

We’ve had many ups and downs since then, but G-d never forgot our initial faith. Hundreds, indeed thousands, of years can pass, but we are still His bride.

And very soon, we believe, we will once again be reunited with Him with the arrival of Moshiach.

Chabad Weekly Update

Do a Mitzvah for Israel!

Due to the difficult circumstances in Israel where millions of our brothers and sisters are under rocket attack from those who put no value on their own lives, and obviously even less on Jewish life, we turn to the Almighty and ask for His blessings. At times like this we are not helpless! We are told by the Psalmist, “The Guardian of Israel neither sleeps nor slumbers!” At times like this our great sages encourage us to add in the good that we do and the merit of this goodness helps to protect our people.

With the above in mind every one of us should make a positive resolution, right now, to add in the three areas that are known as the pillars upon which the earth rests. We must add in our prayers, Torah study, and acts of kindness.

Please join us tomorrow in shul where we will say some extra Psalms and beseech the Almighty to continue to protect our people from those with murderous intent. The light will defeat the darkness!

Special Prayers Needed

Please keep Michoel ben Sofia in mind who is in need of a Refuah Shelaimah (a complete and speedy recovery). Your prayers help!

The Three Weeks of Mourning

The Three Weeks of Mourning, a time when a number of calamities befell the Jewish people throughout history, began on the 17th of Tammuz (corresponding to July 15th) and concludes on the Ninth of Av, corresponding to August 4th at night through August 5th. Both Holy Temples were destroyed on the 9th of Av, which is why it is considered the saddest day on the Jewish Calendar. The Code of Jewish Law states, “From when the Ninth of Av begins one must diminish his/her joy.” During the Three Weeks we do not listen to music, buy/wear new clothing, nor get married. During the final nine days of this period the mourning practices get even stricter as we do not eat meat, drink wine, wear freshly laundered clothing, and take luxurious hot-water baths/showers. Shabbos is excluded from these added strictures.

We will have special services on the Ninth of Av as we will read the Book of Lamentations together. Monday night, August 4th services will begin at 8:30pm. On Tuesday, services will begin at 8am, and Tuesday afternoon services will begin at 7pm, which is when men don the Talis and Tefilin. A light break-the-fast will be served at 8:20pm.

We are taught that he/she who mourns the destruction of the Temple on the Ninth of Av will merit to see its rebuilding. May it come speedily in our days!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Minyan

Our daily Minyan has been a tremendous source of good will for our community. Several people have been able to utilize the Minyan in order to say Kaddish for a loved one. Others have become accustomed to the great Mitzvah of davening with a Minyan because there is one readily available. Beginning this week, a couple of our regulars will be out of town for the next several weeks. We therefore need a few additional commitments so that the Minyan doesn’t slow down, G-d forbid. We are asking those who are able to make a commitment to the Minyan to please do so now. Some people are counting on our Minyan to be able to recite Kaddish for their loved ones. This is tremendously important. Please commit to a day or two per week (at the very least). People who have joined the Minyan have universally reported that they find the experience uplifting and have described it as a great way to start the day. Please respond to this message if you are able to help us in this regard.

Matching Campaign Continues

A great and generous benefactor has stepped forward and pledged a $500,000 matching funds grant to help us finish off our project. If/when this amount is matched by our community, by our friends, by you, we will be ‘there’. We will have an exceptionally beautiful facility that will be a permanent asset to the entire community. I invite you to take the virtual tour by logging onto www.ChabadatLaCosta.com and following the link. I am sure you will be impressed. However, your participation is needed now, especially with this new, unforeseen need to expedite the repair work and the added rental obligation so we can hopefully be in our new building by the New Year.

We have asked each member family to contribute at least $5000 to our building fund in addition to their membership donations – that comes out to only $416 a month, which is tax deductible. That means the actual cost out of your pocket is only $250 in post-tax refund money (check with your tax advisor). Membership donations cover the expenses of operations while building fund donations are strictly used for construction costs. Thanks to a few generous families we will make it sooner or later, but we need everyone to participate to move this process along and to make sure that everybody can experience the joy of giving. Some families have given more than the minimum requirement. But many haven’t given at all, and this is truly disappointing. This complex will be your place of worship, study, and joy! What about your loved ones – won’t they need traditional Jewish services as well? Therefore if you haven’t already made your building fund contribution, it is needed now, so the work can be completed. Remember the example of our ancestors who when Moses called upon them to donate for the Tabernacle they responded so enthusiastically that Moses had to tell them to stop bringing more! I pray for a similar response from our community. We need such a responsenow.

We are currently working on a beautiful donor acknowledgement board that will be prominently displayed so that all of you who made this dream into a reality will be properly honored for your generosity. This plaque will be a place where you will want your name displayed for perpetuity. Any donation to the Building Fund in excess of $5000 will be acknowledged on the Board even if you cannot make a larger donation. Please make your commitment today. Please respond immediately and generously to this heart-felt appeal. Please call me directly to discuss naming opportunities at 760-612-4577, or simply respond to this message by making your pledge and sending it right in.

Thank you and good Shabbos!

Learn the Code of Jewish Law with Rabbi Eilfort

A daily class in practical Jewish Law is held immediately following the Minyan in our storefront location taught by Rabbi Eilfort. Using the Code of Jewish Law, known in Hebrew as the Shulchan Aruch, participants are able to discuss the laws while learning about the ongoing opportunities one has to serve the Almighty on a moment-by-moment basis. The class begins at about 8:50am and lasts for about 20 minutes. There is no charge to attend.

Hebrew Class for Adults Continues

Would you like to work on your Hebrew skills? On Wednesdays at 6:30pm – 7:30pm and meeting in the storefront location there will be a weekly Conversational Hebrew class for adults. This class will be taught by Morah Ronit Barach, a professional teacher with more than 20 years experience. The suggested donation is $5-$10 per class. The regular Torah portion of the Week class will then commence following the Hebrew Class in the same location.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Volume 15 Number 45, 20th of Tammuz 5774, July 18 '14

Message from the Rabbi

This Tuesday was the 17th of Tamuz. Among other things, it was the day the walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans, in 69 CE, after a lengthy siege.

Our sages say that Jerusalem ultimately fell because of infighting. United, the Jews could have fended off the Roman invaders and even driven them from the land.

Let us not make the same mistake today. Whatever differences may divide us pale in comparison with what unites us—the soul that we all have.

Volume 14 Number 44, Tammuz 13, 5774, July 11th '14

Message from the Rabbi

This week we read about how Moses appointed Joshua to succeed him as a leader. It’s a touching scene. Moses had asked G-d to choose his successor.

There is a sad undercurrent. Moses was being told that not only would he not be the one to bring his people into the Land of Israel, but the one who would do so would not be a child of his. It appears that Moses was hoping that one of his children would succeed him at the helm. But alas, G-d had other plans. Joshua, his faithful student, would bring the people home.

Why was Joshua selected? Because he had studied, toiled, and exerted himself to serve Moses and learn the Torah.

We can all be a Joshua. Through hard work, careful attention to detail, and unflagging determination, we can do great things.

Chabad Weekly Update

btn-pledge-mitzvah.png mivtzoim.jpg

We rely on Membership as the single most important source of revenue for our Jewish Center. Remember, “Membership has its privileges!” Those who are already Members please accept are most sincere appreciation, and please send in your forms.

Building Broken Into

We regret to announce that our building site was broken into this week and some copper wire and tools were stolen. Additionally our new mailbox was smashed in (it is still usable). We are getting an assessment of the amount taken. While we do have insurance we will probably not be making a claim due to the dramatic impact it will have on our insurance premiums. In response we have temporarily hired a night watchman, and installed several other devices. One of our subcontractors from out of town will be staying in a trailer at the site while he does his work over the next few weeks. The total damages from this event and the costs of mitigating and preventing like events in the future will probably be in the neighborhood of $10,000. Please help by keeping your eye on the site when driving by – particularly on weekends and at night. If you see something suspicious please call Rabbi Eilfort immediately (even in the middle of the night) at 760-612-4577.

Jewish Art Calendar

We are now collecting ads for our gorgeous Jewish Art Calendars. Not only are the calendars lovely to look at, but they are full with information about Jewish holidays, special events, and even recipes! The special touch that we have is the personalization where we can add your own birthdays, anniversaries, or the Yarzeits of those you love. Many have chosen to dedicate months or date boxes in honor of loved ones.

Participating in the calendar is an important way to support the Shul as well as advertise your business or personal event. Please call the office today for pricing information at 760-943-8891. The deadline for all orders is July 30th!

Message from the Rabbi

This week marks the passing of our Rebbe, of righteous memory, exactly 20 years ago. At the time, there was speculation about what would happen to Chabad. Would we implode? Would we survive? Would the great empire of good that the Rebbe orchestrated simply fade into oblivion?

At that time, no one knew the answer.

Today we have answers . . . over 3,000 of them. Yes, every Chabad center—where people learn Torah, pray, and come closer to G-d—is a manifestation of the Rebbe’s life mission to bring G-d and His nation together.

But the answer extends beyond the walls of the Chabad House.

In essence, every mitzvah we do, every act of kindness we add, is one step closer to the ultimate goal: the arrival of Moshiach, may it happen soon. Amen.
