Message from the Rabbi

This coming Saturday night, Jews all over gather after midnight for Selichot prayers, ushering in the High Holiday season. Selichah means “forgiveness” in Hebrew, as these prayers express our regret over our past misdeeds and our request that G-d forgive us. In Modern Hebrew, the term has come to mean “I’m sorry.”

So before we go out and say Selichot to G-d, let us first make sure to sayselichah to those around us. Breaking down barriers and rebuilding friendships is the surest recipe for a blessed year up ahead. In the words of the daily prayer, “Bless us, our father, all of us together.” When our people are united, we are a fitting receptacle for the divine blessings we so need.

Chabad Weekly Update

Open House THIS Sunday!

Mark your calendars! The Open House for our new facility is scheduled to take place this Sunday, September 21st, from 1 – 5pm. The entire community is invited to check out and enjoy what we have built. There will be a Sofer (ritual scribe) on site to check Mezuzas etc., as is the custom during the month of Elul. There will also be music, refreshments, a bounce house, clowns, a table-scaping demonstration, and lots more. Be sure to join us and invite your friends. The culmination of the event will be when we affix our gorgeous Mezuzah!

Special Midnight Service THIS Saturday

The last week before Rosh Hashanah special prayers called Slichot are added. They are meant to evoke feelings of Teshuva and inspire the petitioners to wholeheartedly return to G-d. We show our eagerness in reciting these meaningful prayers by beginning at the first possible moment, which is Saturday at midnight. Please join us for this 45-minute service.

Chabad and La Costa Resort Announce Special Room Rates

We are proud to announce that Chabad at La Costa and La Costa Resort and Spa have joined together to offer special room rates to people who mention ‘Chabad’ when booking. Please follow the link found below if you want to book rooms for the High Holidays (or for any other reason).

In 1965, the rich and famous came to La Costa and decided that the combination of natural beauty and perfect weather made it an ideal spot to establish a resort.  The resort grew to prominence as word of its exceptional golf courses, tennis courts and luxurious guest rooms spread around the area. Soon after, the resort created America’s first full-service spa at a resort.

Since then, the resort has continued to grow and attract guests seeking wellness, relaxation and fun.  A $50 million investment modernized the resort, heightened the air of luxury and improved the existing services. The combination of luxury, spa services and some of the best golfing in Southern California has made Omni La Costa Resort & Spa one of the premier destinations in Carlsbad, California.

Today, Chabad at La Costa enjoys discounted rates including a reduced resort fee of $15.00 (normally $28.00) and complimentary self parking (savings of $18.00 per car per day).  The resort’s deposit requirement is waived for Chabad guests as well as the three-day cancellation policy.  Chadad guests may cancel until 6pm on the day of arrival to avoid a charge of one night’s room and tax.

To book your room at the special Chabad rate, call toll-free 800-854-5000or book online at http://www.omnihotels.com/hotels/san-diego-la-costa/meetings/chabad.  We look forward to welcoming you!”

Great Chair Challenge Continues

40 Chairs Left to Go!

An anonymous donor has stepped forward and offered to match any donations for the purchase of high-quality banquet chairs for our new shul. Although many cheap alternatives are available we have been given the unique opportunity to buy superior quality chairs at cost price! These chairs come with an excellent guarantee and are built specifically for the types of uses we have in mind, and they are built to last. On top of that they will match the décor of the sanctuary. The cost per chair is $60, and we are looking to buy at least 100, although 200 would be much better. If our friends and supporters can come up with $6,000 for 100 chairs our generous donor will give an additional 100 chairs, however, donations for this matching fund can only be accepted right away, as the order has been made.

Thus far 60 chairs have been donated.

If you can do this Mitzvah it would be a great benefit for the whole community. Please act now by donating securely online atwww.ChabadatLaCosta.com and follow the link to make a donation. Please be sure to indicate that the donation is specifically for the “Chair Challenge.” Thank you and G-d bless!

Getting Closer by the Day THANKS to Our Generous Donors!

Dear Friends,

Have you heard the GREAT news?! G-d willing, we will be in our gorgeous new complex before THIS year’s High Holidays! If you haven’t driven past our construction site (1980 La Costa Ave., Carlsbad), you haven’t seen the dramatic progress we’ve made. If you would like a personal tour please feel free to call me at 760-612-4577.

This is the most exciting time in Chabad at La Costa’s history.

We have been tremendously blessed with a generous outpouring of community support – some of it from completely unexpected sources. It’s true, our small, modest project turned into something much grander and more beautiful. These changes insure our future in this complex for the long-term, and will allow us much more flexibility in serving the needs of a growing Jewish community in North County.

We are in the home stretch and YOUR help is needed to reach the finish line. We are just over $75,000 ($5,000 came in this week!) shy of reaching our financial requirements to achieve occupancy.Due to numerous miracles coupled with lots of very hard work more than $2.8 million has been raised thus far. Immediate help is needed with the last $70,000 required for occupancy, and it is needed now. Are you able to invest in the future of Judaism? Do you know someone who you can approach for assistance in this sacred opportunity?

Several important dedications are still available. All dedications will be appropriately honored as we are currently working on plans for an impressive, Jerusalem Stone, Donor Acknowledgement Wall that will be prominently displayed in the Breezeway. Even if you cannot afford one of the ‘big’ dedications please help bring our communal dream to fruition. Every contribution of $5,000 and up will be acknowledged on our coming donor acknowledgement wall, and all other contributions will likewise be indicated in a dignified manner.

Remember, High Holiday services will take place in our new complex. Our beloved Rabbi Shapiro will be here as our Cantor. And, G-d willing, YOU will join us to partake in our inspiring and joyful High Holiday experience.Immediate reservations are required to attend, as seating will be limited. The donation for seats is included in membership – so please, if you haven’t already done so, fill out and return the membership form. If you need one all you have to do is ask.

And please, vote with your checkbook for a vibrant Jewish community here in North County. We need you to please step forward now, and to do your best as we build our future together!

May you and your family be inscribed in the Book of Life!

Sincerely,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

Building Progress

And so passes another very successful week! This week our gorgeous wrought-iron gate was hung, stucco was painted, the glass partition was installed on the back wall, light fixtures were placed, electricity and water turned on, and more concrete was poured.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Minyan

Our daily Minyan has been a tremendous source of good will for our community. Several people have been able to utilize the Minyan in order to say Kaddish for a loved one. Others have become accustomed to the great Mitzvah of davening with a Minyan because there is one readily available. Beginning this week, a couple of our regulars will be out of town for the next several weeks. We therefore need a few additional commitments so that the Minyan doesn’t slow down, G-d forbid. We are asking those who are able to make a commitment to the Minyan to please do so now. Some people are counting on our Minyan to be able to recite Kaddish for their loved ones. This is tremendously important. Please commit to a day or two per week (at the very least). People who have joined the Minyan have universally reported that they find the experience uplifting and have described it as a great way to start the day. Please respond to this message if you are able to help us in this regard.

Learn the Code of Jewish Law with Rabbi Eilfort

A daily class in practical Jewish Law is held immediately following the Minyan in our storefront location taught by Rabbi Eilfort. Using the Code of Jewish Law, known in Hebrew as the Shulchan Aruch, participants are able to discuss the laws while learning about the ongoing opportunities one has to serve the Almighty on a moment-by-moment basis. The class begins at about 8:50am and lasts for about 20 minutes. There is no charge to attend.

Hebrew Class for Adults Continues

Would you like to work on your Hebrew skills? On Wednesdays at 6:30pm – 7:30pm and meeting in the storefront location there will be a weekly Conversational Hebrew class for adults. This class will be taught by Morah Ronit Barach, a professional teacher with more than 20 years experience. The suggested donation is $5-$10 per class. The regular Torah portion of the Week class will then commence following the Hebrew Class in the same location.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Volume 15 Number 52, 10th of Elul 5774, September 5th '14

Message from the Rabbi

We are well into the Jewish month of Elul, during which we prepare ourselves for the High Holidays. One of the beautiful customs of this month is to recite Psalm 27 twice a day. In it, King David expresses his rock-solid faith in G-d: “Though an army would besiege me, my heart would not fear. Though war would arise against me, in this I trust.”

Looking toward the year ahead, it is my prayer that we need no armies and enemies to remind us of our deep connection to G-d. We’ve been tried and tested enough. Now is time for us to revel in our relationship with the divine in a world awash with G-dly good.

Chabad Weekly Update

Do You Have any Connections?

As work progresses there are some areas where we are seeking additional help. For instance, we would like to have stained-glass on the two main windows in the sanctuary. Do you know someone who deals with stained glass and may offer us a good deal (or a donation)? We are looking for possible contacts in the audio-visual business, as well as someone who deals with towel/toilet paper dispensers and the like. We will also need to upgrade our computer system. If you have any contacts in these areas please let us know as soon as possible by responding to this message. Thank you!

We are just over $70,000 ($50,000 came in this week!) shy of reaching our financial requirements to achieve occupancy. Due to numerous miracles coupled with lots of very hard work more than $2.8 million has been raised thus far.

Announcing the Great Chair Challenge

10 Chairs Donated This Week

An anonymous donor has stepped forward and offered to match any donations for the purchase of high-quality banquet chairs for our new shul. Although many cheap alternatives are available we have been given the unique opportunity to buy superior quality chairs at cost price! These chairs come with an excellent guarantee and are built specifically for the types of uses we have in mind, and they are built to last. On top of that they will match the décor of the sanctuary. The cost per chair is $60, and we are looking to buy at least 100, although 200 would be much better. If our friends and supporters can come up with $6,000 for 100 chairs our generous donor will give an additional 100 chairs, however, donations for this matching fund can only be accepted right away, as the order needs to go in next week. If you can do this Mitzvah it would be a great benefit for the whole community. Please act now by donating securely online at www.ChabadatLaCosta.com and follow the link to make a donation. Please be sure to indicate that the donation is specifically for the “Chair Challenge.” Thank you and G-d bless!

Open House Scheduled

Mark your calendars! The Open House for our new facility has been scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 21st, from 1 – 5pm. The entire community is invited to check out and enjoy what we have built. There will be a Sofer (ritual scribe) on site to check Mezuzas etc., as is the custom during the month of Elul. There will also be music, refreshments, a bounce house, clowns, dignitaries, and lots more. Be sure to join us and invite your friends. The culmination of the event will be when we affix our gorgeous Mezuzah!

Building Progress

And so passes another very successful week! This week two coats of stucco went on, the bathroom and kitchen tile work was completed, lots of additional electrical work was completed, and we worked on our landscaping plan (it will be GORGEOUS!). It is a sight to behold. If you haven’t already done so and want a tour please respond to this message.

Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Our students want to be here!

High Holidays Approach!

We are extremely excited to announce that this year’s High Holiday services will take place in our new building! We expect a larger than usual crowd so immediate reservations are highly recommended.

We are also very excited to announce that Rabbi Michoel Shapiro will be returning to serve as our Cantor again this year. Rabbi Shapiro’s beautiful voice, coupled with his sincere and joyful approach to the prayers, make him our ideal Cantor. And yes, his wife Chava and their children will be here as well.

Only Members in good standing and those who make official reservations (including Members) are able to attend due to space limitations. The reservations will be handled on a first come – first served basis. No exceptions. Please make immediate reservations (payments may be made online or by mailing a check).
