Message from the Rabbi

Passover is coming. I’m sure that some people have already cleaned large parts of their homes, and some really ambitious types already have freezers stocked with brisket and other goodies. As in the past, I’d like to call your attention to the many Jewish families here and abroad who are not fortunate enough to be able to afford a Passover celebration of their own.

If you know such a family, please help them out discreetly and honorably. If you are experiencing hardship, please do not suffer in silence. There are wonderful organizations that are there to help—but they need to know you are in need.

Together, as we all do our part, we can make sure that this Passover will be a holiday of freedom in the fullest sense of the word.

Minyan

Our daily Minyan has been a tremendous source of good will for our community. Several people have been able to utilize the Minyan in order to say Kaddish for a loved one. Others have become accustomed to the great Mitzvah of davening with a Minyan because there is one readily available. Beginning this week, a couple of our regulars will be out of town for the next several weeks. We therefore need a few additional commitments so that the Minyan doesn’t slow down, G-d forbid. We are asking those who are able to make a commitment to the Minyan to please do so now. Some people are counting on our Minyan to be able to recite Kaddish for their loved ones. This is tremendously important. Please commit to a day or two per week (at the very least). People who have joined the Minyan have universally reported that they find the experience uplifting and have described it as a great way to start the day. Please respond to this message if you are able to help us in this regard.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for either the Memorial Board or the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email toinfo@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Message from the Rabbi

Exactly 75 years ago this week, the Previous Rebbe, of righteous memory, came ashore in the New York harbor. He had just been spirited out of a bombed-out Warsaw that was quickly becoming a death trap for Jews. Looking at the American Jewish landscape, the prospects for sustainable Jewish life looked bleak. As their material fortunes rose, Jewish people were trying hard—often too hard—to shed their Jewish identities.

But where others saw a wasteland, the Previous Rebbe saw fertile soil. And so he sent out his emissaries, couples and even teens, to found Jewish day schools all across the American northeast, the first such endeavor on American soil. There was suspicion, resistance, and even outright hostility to the notion, but the Rebbe persevered, telling his chassidim, “You plow and sow, and I will irrigate your efforts with my tears.”

Today, there are more than a quarter of a million children in Jewish day schools in the U.S., and Chabad centers in almost every urban area with a significant Jewish population.

The seedlings the Rebbe planted have taken root, grown, and continue to flourish.

Chabad Weekly Update

Purim Plans Rock!

Purim is THIS Week!!!

Purim, the most joyous holiday on the Jewish calendar, comes out on Wednesday night, March 4, and Thursday, March 5. Wednesday Purim services with Megillah reading will begin at 6pm and will be followed by light refreshments. Thursday morning services will begin at 8am and include both a Torah reading and the Megillah. Thursday afternoon at 5pm we will have our annual Purim Banquet (see details below), which will be preceded by a Megillah reading at 4:30pm.

This year’s banquet is themed “Life’s a Picnic.” The price is $25 per adult and $10 per child (3-12). Space is limited so reservations are a must by sending an email to info@chabadatlacosta.com. A separate Purim brochure with lots of informative content has been mailed as well.

Wednesday, March 4th is the Fast of Esther. We are prohibited from eating or drinking from 4:56am – 6:14pm. We fast to commemorate the fast undertaken by the Jewish people as requested by Queen Esther in preparation for her approach of King Achashvairosh to annul the decree of the wicked Haman.

The Shabbos before Purim is called ‘Shabbat Zachor’ and is considered a very special Shabbos due to the Torah reading. We will read about the infamous nation of Amalek and how they attacked the Jewish people after their successful exodus from Egyptian bondage. Ultimately the Jewish people were able to vanquish Amalek, but Amalek remains the eternal enemy of the Jewish people. We read the portion this week because the wicked Haman, who sought to annihilate our entire nation on one day, was a descendent of Amalek, and he is the primary villain of the Purim holiday.

It is considered a sacred obligation for every Jewish person to hear this Torah reading! Please be sure to join us. As a reminder services begin at 10am (not to be confused with 12:15pm), and the Torah reading will commence at about 11:15.

Celebratory Kiddush THIS Shabbos!

MAZEL TOV! – THIS TIME IT’S A GIRL!

The Simchas (joyous occasions) just keep on coming! Rabbi Elia Nachum Eilfort got engaged this week to Chaya Mushka Weiss, of Miami Lakes, Florida. Chaya’s parents, Rabbi and Mrs. Mendy and Tzippy Weiss, are Shluchim (emissaries) of the Rebbe in Miama Lakes where they have a Chabad House and community. Needless to say everyone is overwhelmed with happiness at this time. Please help us celebrate as we come together this Shabbos!

There will also be an Engagement Party for Elia and Chaya at 8:30pm Saturday night, March 14th at the home of Haskel and Brenda Joseph, to which everyone is invited. Please note dairy food will be served.

Celebratory Kiddush NEXT Shabbos and the Following Shabbos!

Please be sure to join us next Shabbos and the Shabbos afterwards as we celebrate the wedding of Rivka Eilfort to Rabbi Yonah Fenton. The Shabbos before the wedding (next Shabbos) is called the Shabbos Kallah – in honor of the bride. Delicious cakes and other delicacies will be served.

The following week we will have the traditional Sheva Brachos for the Bride and Groom following services on Shabbos. Sheva Brachos means Seven Blessings, which are the blessings bestowed upon the couple for a week following their wedding. A group of families from the community have gotten together to host a beautiful Kiddush-Luncheon on Saturday, March 14th, and everyone is invited to celebrate together.
