Volume 16 Number 46, 13th of Elul 5775, 28th of August '15

Message from the Rabbi

Hebrew_Chai_Symbol.pngThis coming Wednesday is 18 Elul, known as Chai Elul. Among chassidim this is a very special day because it is the date of birth of both the Baal Shem Tov and the Alter Rebbe, two men who guided and shaped the chassidic movement.

Here is one of my favorite sayings of the Baal Shem Tov: “Your fellow is your mirror. If your own face is clean, so will be the image you perceive. But should you look upon your fellow and see a blemish, it is your own imperfection that you are encountering—you are being shown what it is that you must correct within yourself.” Now that’s something to live with!

A Thought from the Rabbi

It’s almost the High Holidays, are you prepared? Think of the High Holiday season like a long-scheduled international trip. Many stops will be made along the way. Several different time zones and climates will be crossed. Varied activities will be engaged in.

Now let me ask you a question or two: Would you show up to the trip at the appointed hour without any preparation? How do you think lack of preparation would impact your trip, would it make it more or less enjoyable? More or less effective? More or less meaningful?

Of course the metaphor is not exactly accurate, as trips – even international ones – are rarely if ever as germane to one’s existence as the High Holidays. My hope is that the metaphor will give you pause. It is of critical importance to understand that the Days of Awe are nearly upon us. It is a time when extra time will be spent in Shul, thinking about the past year and making positive resolutions for the coming year. The Almighty helps us prepare by making Himself ‘more available’ to us, much as the King in the Field who goes out to his subjects so He can greet them in THEIR element and encourage them to come closer to Him.

To properly prepare for the upcoming holidays we make an internal, spiritual account of the most important relationship in our lives – our relationship with “Our Father Our King.” This relationship informs all of our relationships, from the most important (immediate family) to the most distant (stranger). This relationship also colors our relationship with nature, our place of business, and even how we view what is going on around us and the world. Indeed, it is all encompassing.

Take a few concrete steps to prepare starting immediately! Make a list for yourself if need be, including what you did well and what needs improvement. Think about how you will improve yourself and how you will gently and lovingly help support those around you who may need encouragement. And, certainly don’t forget to make immediate reservations to join us for our uplifting and meaningful High Holiday services! May you be written and sealed in the Book of Life!

save the date.jpg

We are pleased to announce the members of the Dedication Dinner Committee. Rabbi Eilfort and Brenda Joseph are co-chairs. The Dedication Dinner will be serving three purposes; 1. To formally dedicate the new building. 2. To honor those who made the new building possible. 3. To raise funds so that the new building can be fully utilized.

During the first meeting the group formed sub committees including Advertising, Auction, Catering, Décor, Entertainment, Invitation, and Utility. The group also discussed looking for valuable new gifts for the auction, and has already started making inquiries. Everyone’s help is needed in this regard so if you have or can sponsor hotel/time-share getaways, tickets to sporting events or entertainment events, beauty/health products or experiences, jewelry, or electronics please respond to this message. It will be a great Mitzvah and deeply appreciated!

Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

Cell Phones & Chatting During ServicesNo phones.jpg

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Message from the Rabbi

“Judges and officials you shall place in all your gates,” opens this week’s Torah portion. This is the mitzvah to make sure there is a justice system in place and to adhere to it. When read allegorically, however, this verse has another meaning as well. Our eyes, mouths, ears and nose serve as portals—gates—to our minds. Sometimes we need to place a judge at the gate. Is this something I need to see? Is this something I need to hear? Is this something I need to say? The more we ask ourselves these questions, the better off we will be.

This coming week starts the Jewish month of Elul, a time of introspection and self-refinement. Every weekday morning we blow the shofar, reminding us that Rosh Hashanah is just around the corner.

It is not too early to start thinking about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur—and I don’t just mean planning the menu. The High Holiday prayer service is rich and nuanced, but we often end up rushing through it as we make sure that everyone is engaged. So do yourself a favor: grab a Rosh Hashanah prayerbook, read through some of it now, contemplate its meaning, and you’ll feel like you’re greeting an old friend in a month from now.

French Gourmet Kosher Cooking Class Franck Riffaud.jpg

We are excited to announce that Franck Riffaud, Executive Pastry Chef at the Park Hyatt Aviara, a five-star resort hotel, will be giving a class offered to our community at no cost. The class will take place at 7:30pm on Thursday, August 20th in Chabad at La Costa. For this particular class Chef will be focusing on delicious yet simple recipes for dessert on Shabbat. Each participant will receive the recipes as well as learn, in a step-by-step manner how to make it. They will get to sample the desserts take some home!

Chef Riffaud joined Park Hyatt Aviara Resort after three years at Four Seasons Hotel Dublin, where endless tempting pastry creations earned him a reputation as one of Ireland’s leading pastry chefs.

Born in France, Chef Riffaud grew up on a farm in Bordeaux.  His grandmother taught him to cook, instilling in him a respect for the quality of the produce in each dish.  At the age of 17, Riffaud went to the Culinary School of Quercy Perigord in Souillac.  While there, he learned all aspects of French culinary skills and cultures, and discovered his love of sweet foods, especially pastries.  Chef Riffaud continued his career in France and worked as Assistant Pastry Chef in Three-Star Michelin restaurants and some of the top Relais & Chateaux restaurants including Le Bateau Ivre, Le Grand Coeur & Le Cagnard.

“There are two kinds of pastry chefs; the artist who creates elaborate dishes that are almost like sculptures and the passionate,” said Riffaud.  “I fall into the latter category.”

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email info@ChabadatLaCosta.com your request.

Learn the Code of Jewish Law with Rabbi Eilfort

A daily class in practical Jewish Law is held immediately following the Minyan taught by Rabbi Eilfort. Using the Code of Jewish Law, known in Hebrew as the Shulchan Aruch, participants are able to discuss the laws while learning about the ongoing opportunities one has to serve the Almighty on a moment-by-moment basis. The class begins at about 8:50am and lasts for about 20 minutes. There is no charge to attend.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for either the Memorial Board or the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email toinfo@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
