Message from the Rabbi

Matzah and Wine (225)I’ve probably written about this before, but I’m going to mention it again. In the last hours of Passover, as day meets night, there is a chassidic custom of holding another Seder. But this time, instead of commemorating our exodus from Egypt, we are celebrating our impending exodus from the current, final exile.

In Chabad, this feast even includes matzah and 4 cups of wine. Please join us for this deeply meaningful experience.

Chabad Weekly Update - End of Passover Edition

Special Torah Reading, Yizkor Memorial Service, and Moshiach’s Meal

Please note that we will be using our Holocaust Torah tomorrow for the Torah reading. The Torah reading on the 7th of Passover includes the successful crossing of the Sea of Reeds and the subsequent Song of Moses. Our beautiful Holocaust Torah has particularly gorgeous writing at this part. Everyone who wishes will get a chance to take a look at our precious scroll. Services begin at 10am.

Yizkor

On Saturday we will celebrate Acharon shel Pesach (the 8th and Final Day of Passover), which brings a magnificent holiday to a wonderful conclusion. Our sages tell us that this day has a taste of the Messianic times. On this important day we include the Yizkor Memorial Prayer, which will be recited at 12pm. At our holiest times we are mindful of our departed loved ones and make a pledge to do something good in their memory.

On Saturday evening at 7pm we will host Moshiach’s meal at the Shul. This long-held tradition has been enjoyed for generations. We sing together, share stories and Torah thoughts, and even drink four cups of wine. It is an extremely uplifting experience and everyone is invited.

Kiddush CupKiddush this Holiday

The Holiday and Shabbat Kiddush is sponsored by the Alter Family and Rosette Marelly in honor of her mother’s Yarzeit.

Everyone is invited to join us for this beautiful weekly gathering!

Rabbi’s Thoughts

As we enter the latter part of the Passover Holiday there are some wonderful celebrations to be had! The Seventh Day of Passover (in Hebrew called Shevee’ee Shel Pesach) is an important day in Jewish History as it commemorates the final redemption of the Jewish people from their Egyptian oppressors.

The Jewish people were cornered with the Sea of Reeds directly ahead of them and the Egyptian army bearing down upon them. There seemed to be nowhere to go. When Nachshon ben Aminadav waded into the water he had faith that G-d would keep His word and redeem His people. The water went up to his chin and then, voila’, the sea parted and a path was found through to the other side. The Egyptians wouldn’t (perhaps ‘couldn’t’ is a better word) stop from chasing the Jews. This refusal to read the situation correctly – despite so much history and so many lessons – ultimately cost Pharaoh his vaunted army.

Imagine the joy of the Children of Israel as they successfully navigated the passage through the midst of the Sea! As they emerged on the far bank they broke into song led by their beloved leaders Moses and Miriam, who led the women. They extolled the Almighty who had saved them yet again and who finally completely broke the dysfunctional hold of the Egyptians over the Israelites.

The word Shevee’ee, meaning seventh, is related to the word Sove’ah, which means satiated, meaning that on this day we are fully satiated with the concept of Passover.

And what is the concept of Pesach? The main concept of Passover is freedom! It is on this holiday that we are freed from both our internal and external oppressors. Those powers that seem irresistible that are always telling us what cannot be done are vanquished, allowing us to realize our full potential. The faith of a man led to the actions of a people, which led to the miraculous intervention of the Almighty.

The miracles of the Seventh of Passover usher us directly to a new Era, the Era of Redemption, the Era of Moshiach. When Moshiach (finally) arrives it will mean the ultimate in experiencing freedom, as the G-dliness will envelope us and inspire us to free ourselves from our own limitations. No longer will we be oppressed. Likewise the external limitations will be completely negated. Our hope is that our external enemies will change their ways and become our allies so that they may too partake of the blessings of the Messianic times. The crucial consideration is timing, for one must choose to believe – just as Nachshon chose to jump in the water – to become a full beneficiary of Moshiach.

Let us all endeavor to use the inspiration of this sacred holiday to make the right choices and may those choices be rewarded now with the immediate arrival of the righteous Moshiach!

Special Pesach Fund – Help Needed

At this time of year it is has been a long-standing tradition amongst Jews the world over to give extra charity to help the poor for Passover. Passover needs tend to be more costly than some families can afford. It is for this reason that Chabad at La Costa will again be raising money for distribution. This fund is called “Ma’ot Chitim,” which literally means money for bread.

We need you to be as generous as you can to help the less fortunate Jews here and abroad. Perhaps you can donate $108 so a family can be sponsored for our communal Seder? Please go online and use the secure donation link at www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate. G-d promises those who give charity that it as if they have made a personal loan to the Almighty, and He always pays back, with interest!

New JLI Course Beginning

Chabad at La Costa in conjunction with the Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) will present Strength and Struggle: Lessons in Character from the Stories of Our Prophets, the institute’s new six-session for Spring 2016.

StrengthStruggle_chabad_banner_480x235.jpg

Rabbi Eilfort will conduct the six course sessions.

Strength and Struggle: Lessons in Character from the Stories of Our Prophets, a brand-new six-session course by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, explores six intriguing, disturbing, and controversial biblical personalities and events from the times of the Prophets: Jephthah’s daughter, the rise and fall of King Saul, Ruth’s migration to Israel, King David and Bathsheba, the wonders of Elisha, and Jonah and the fish.

Through textual analysis and by exploring the ideas offered by classic biblical commentaries, this course offers a snapshot of the first Jewish commonwealth, an era that lasted nearly one thousand years, and probes the aforementioned personalities within their broad historical and sociological contexts, allowing us to reach deep into the essence of these figures and events.

At first it may seem that these stories are full of questions. We will discover, however, that they are full of timeless answers to our innermost questions about life.

Like all JLI programs, Strength and Struggle is designed to appeal to people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship.

Interested students may call 760-943-8891or visit www.myJLI.com for registration and other course-related information.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

memorial-plates-250x250.jpg

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

donor leaf.jpg

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email toinfo@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

No phones.jpgCell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Message from the Rabbi

There’s just one week left until Passover. In Jewish homes all over the world the vacuum cleaner is whirring, the food processor is processing, and the sights and sounds and smells of Passover fill the air.

Pesch Groceries.jpg

But then there are the homes where this is all absent. They simply do not have the wherewithal to purchase basic Passover needs. Some of these homes are subsidized housing in seedy inner-city neighborhoods. But others are set on expansive lawns and have luxury cars parked in the driveways.

Poverty can be found everywhere, and it is up to us to eradicate it. Please speak to me if you wish to contribute toward the Passover needs of a family in need.

Appoint the Rabbi Your Agent to Sell Your Chametz NOW

The Jewish people are forbidden from owning Chametz (leavened products including bread, pasta, and/or anything else made from grains) on Pesach. We are even forbidden from owning the vessels used to prepare or eat the Chametz. Instead of throwing everything away each year we are permitted to sell the Chametz to a non-Jew, who is permitted to own Chametz on Passover. All one has to do is lock away the Chametz in a place that the owner will not touch or see it, and appoint the Rabbi as the agent to oversee the transaction. Those who want Rabbi Eilfort to act in this capacity need to respond to this message appointing him to do this transaction and indicating the address and location where the Chametz will be kept for the duration of the holiday. The Chametz must be locked away no later than 11:30am on April 22nd, and may not be taken out until 8:30pm on April 30th. There is no charge for this service though donations are gratefully accepted.

Message from the Rabbi

After a whole extra month of Adar, Nissan—the month of miracles—is finally here. Can you use some miracles in your life? Now’s the time to pray for some. I know what you’re thinking: “Come on, Rabbi! Just because we flipped a page in the calendar, you believe things are going to change?”

1nissan.jpg

I can imagine that the Jews in Egypt had similar words for Moses: “Really, Moe, it’s been so long that we’ve been languishing here in Egypt. Pharaoh is the strongest superpower in the world. Do you really think your invisible G-d will take us out of here?”

And we all know how that story ended. It happened once and it can happen again.

Gelson’s Kosher for Passover Tour THIS Week

Gelsons.jpg

For the first time we are thrilled to announce that Rabbi Eilfort will be offering a tour of the newly-opened Gelson’s Supermarket (located directly adjacent to Chabad) with an emphasis upon Kosher for Passover products found in the store. The tour will take place on Wednesday, April 13th at 7:30pm and everyone is invited to join. There is no charge to participate.

In addition to the classes mentioned above Chabad will be hosting a complete schedule of joyous and meaningful holiday services (holiday flyer to be mailed).

The highlight of the holiday are the warm and traditional Sedarim (traditional Passover meals). When the rabbis, of blessed memory, codified the Seder, they managed to create the ultimate in interactive learning opportunities. The hands-on approach of the Seder, and the inclusive nature of the narrative, ensures that everyone – particularly the children – have a meaningful experience that will not only make a strong positive impression now, but will create positive lifelong memories. Everyone is invited to partake of our home-cooked, Kosher for Passover, Sedarim. Information and reservations can be made by visitingwww.ChabadatLaCosta.com.

Chabad Hebrew School LogoGive your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Our students want to be here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

No phones.jpgNeedless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity.

Volume 17 Number 29, 22nd of Adar II 5776, April 1 '16

Message from the Rabbi

Passover is steadily approaching. In addition to matzah and wine, supermarkets are stocking up with borscht, macaroons and other goodies that have traditionally been part of the Passover experience.

I don’t know if the supermarket execs have gotten the memo yet, but there has been a major shift in Passover cooking in recent decades. Today the taste of Passover has expanded far, far beyond the Pale of Jewish Settlement. And potato kugel and chicken soup have been joined by fresh salads, diverse soups, and high-quality wines that would have left Bubby scratching her kerchief in disbelief.

As our menus continue to expand, diversify and become more sophisticated, let’s make sure that our understanding and appreciation of the significance of this holiday progress at least apace with our culinary prowess.

Do you understand the significance of the litany of biblical quotes and rabbinic commentary that we read every year? If not, perhaps it’s time to trade in the old Maxwell House Haggadah for something with explanations. Do you know more much about the actual Exodus than you know when you were a kid throwing spitballs in Hebrew school? If not, please let me know, because I have some great books to recommend. Do you know the rich Kabbalistic significance attached to the many rituals that form the Seder experience? If not, I have lots of reading to share with you.

Passover is coming. Let’s be ready!

Personal Invitation

Friends,

Please consider this as a personal invitation for you to join us this Shabbos. My family and I are sponsoring the Kiddush and have asked all friends who are able to please join us for this joyous event. We will be celebrating the life of my mother, my teacher, whose Yarzeit is coming. It is also Shabbos Mevorchim, the Shabbos on which we bless the upcoming new month, the month of Nissan. It is our custom to have a Chassidic gathering (Farbrengen) on the Shabbos before the new month.

Good Shabbos!

Rabbi Eilfort

Special Guests THIS Shabbos

We are happy to announce that the Bochurim, the Rabbinical students, from the Katz Yeshiva in Los Angeles, will be joining us this Shabbos.

Minyans Needed

Gears (animated)Please note that a Minyan is needed so Kaddish can be recited Saturday night at 8pm at the shul. Shabbat is over at 7:48pm so people should come over after Shabbos has ended. Havdalah will be said after the Minyan. The Sunday morning service will take place at the regular 8:30am, and likewise a Minyan is needed so Kaddish can be recited. If you are able to help with this tremendous Mitzvah please respond to this message as soon as possible.

A Thought from the Rabbi

After the joyousness of Purim, a holiday when we reach the highest heights, what is the next step? How can we possibly do better than unlimited joy?

During the month of Adar, and in this year’s case the months (plural) of Adar, we are commanded to increase our joy. In Judaism we know that we are commanded to “Go from the strength to strength,” to continually grow in spiritual matters. The enemy we overcame on Purim, the evil Haman who came from the nation of Amalek, represents spiritual indifference and coldness to matters of G-dliness. And so we engage in an ongoing battle against that which Haman represents. The greatest weapon in our arsenal in our war with Amalek is happiness. When we are happy we will serve G-d with a positive energy and we certainly will not fall victim to the indifference and coldness embodied by Amalek.

In light of the above our question becomes stronger; where do we go from here?

The Code of Jewish Law indirectly answers when it tells us that it is incumbent upon us to begin preparing for Passover (Pesach) 30 days before the holiday. Interestingly 30 days before Passover is the day after Purim. Coincidence? We don’t think so! The calendar is telling us the answer to our question. The way up from unlimited joy is redemption, as represented by the Holiday of Our Freedom.

It is also instructive that a large part of preparing for Pesach is learning the myriad laws that apply to the holiday. This tells us another valuable lesson; that if we want to remain in the joyous state engendered by Purim, Torah study is a big part of the key. In fact, not only does the Torah study keep us happy, it also keeps us free. The Rabbis tell us clearly that there is no freedom except through Torah.

Some of us may erroneously believe that the Mitzvot are somehow limiting, G-d forbid. The truth is, however, nothing can be further from the truth! But even the freedom that we enjoy through Torah study is nothing compared to the ultimate freedom we will achieve through the speedy arrival of our righteous Moshiach!

Passover Plans ‘16

Chabad at La Costa will again be offering a full array of Passover activities designed to educate the Jewish residents of North County in an engaging and meaningful way while encouraging additional observance of the special Passover traditions.

To properly celebrate Passover preparation is the key, and to this end there will be a two-part ‘Preparing for Passover’ Seminar taught by Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort, Director of Chabad at La Costa. On consecutive Mondays, April 4th and 11th at 7pm the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of Passover will be explored. Not only will practical advice be offered (“How do I prepare my home for this special holiday?”), but also rich stories and explanations will be shared (“Wow! Such great thoughts to share at the Seder Table!”). There is no cost to attend this popular two-part series, however reservations are required by sending an email to info@ChabadatLaCosta.com or calling 760-943-8891.

For the first time we are thrilled to announce that Rabbi Eilfort will be offering a Passover Store Tour of the newly-opened Gelson’s Supermarket (located directly adjacent to Chabad) with an emphasis upon Kosher for Passover products found in the store. The tour will take place on Wednesday, April 13th at 7:30pm and everyone is invited to join. There is no charge to participate.
