Message from the Rabbi

G-d gave us a wonderful gift called “forgetfulness.” Eventually, things slip from our minds and fade into the hazy murkiness of the past. Even memories that we do retain slowly become less vivid with the passage of time.

Why did I call it a gift? Very simple. Could you imagine what life would be like if you remembered every scraped knee, bruised ego, or tragic loss that you experienced as if it were happening right now? You’d be overwhelmed by pain.

Yet, as natural as it is to forget the troubles of the past, there are some things that are seared into our memory so deeply and strongly that they remain forever.

The destruction of the Temple is one such event. It happened 2,000 years ago. Yet, we still gather annually to remember, cry, and pray. How could it be? Does anyone mourn the destruction of Pompeii, which happened at almost the same time? Why is the Temple still fresh in our memories?

The Talmud tells us that if the Temple was not rebuilt in our time, it is as if it was destroyed in our time. In other words, it is a constantly recurring tragedy, not something from the ancient past, but something happening to us right now—and we remember it as such.

May G-d grant that we soon witness the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem with the arrival of Moshiach. Amen.

It is a Sad Time for Our Shul

Tragically our community lost two outstanding friends this week, as both Jacques VanDam and Jeff Stier passed away. Both of these wonderful men served our community as President of our shul. Both volunteered hundreds and hundreds of hours in service of our community. Both gave generously to help keep our community afloat. And both are irreplaceable.

When a dear friend passes it is a time to take stock. We think about the good things they did and all that they accomplished. Although Jacques and Jeff came from very different places and had very different styles, they were both fierce advocates for us. Sometimes uncomfortable situations arise that require a steady hand to deal with appropriately. Neither of these men backed away from a difficult task. The words dedication and hard work bests describes both of them.

We lost two role-models this week. We thank them for their unwavering love and dedication. We look to them as an inspiration for what we, each one of us, must selflessly do for our community.

May the Almighty comfort their families amongst the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. May we only know of Simchas – joyous occasions – in the future!

The Three Weeks of Mourning

17th of Tammuz – 9th of Av

In our long history there have been times that have been particularly difficult. Most notably are the days associated with the destruction of the Holy Temples. The first Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in the year 586 BCE. First they laid siege to the City of Jerusalem, which happened on the 10th of the Hebrew month of Tevet. Then on the 17th of Tammuz they breached the outer walls of the city leading to its destruction three weeks later on the 9th of Av.

The days associated with the destruction of the Temples have been designated as fast days; days on which we are prohibited from eating or drinking. In fact, the entire period from the 17th of Tammuz until the 9th of Av (this year the 10th of Av because the 9th is on Shabbat and only fast on Shabbat when it coincides with Yom Kippur) is a time of sadness. We observe some of the rituals of mourning during this time. We are prohibited from listening to music, getting married, buying new clothes, and getting our hair cut. The observances become even stricter during the last nine days of the Three Weeks, when we cannot eat meat or drink wine, or take luxurious hot-baths and the like.

Our custom is to give extra charity on this day and to spend extra time in prayer and doing good deeds. Until such time that the Holy Temple is rebuilt – may it be speedily in our days – it is as though it was destroyed due the sins of our generation.

6-23-16

Dear Friend & Supporter,

We have had an exciting year here at your Jewish Center. So many programs – so many services, so many classes, so many parties, etc., but, and this is a big but, we have so much more to do! This is going to be a very big year. We are poised to offer more Jewish opportunities than ever before to you, our shul family.

Now, on to the business at hand. Everything that we do/provide to the community costs us money. We know that you already know this, but we have a mortgage that costs money, the electricity costs, the phone costs, the Internet access costs, the books cost, the food costs, and the gas in my car costs money. Due to these costs (and many more like them) we need friends to partner with us so that we can accomplish all that needs to be accomplished. Not to put too fine a point on it, but we need YOU. YOUR support is our lifeblood.

Of course we want more than just your money (“More than just my money?!,” you exclaim.). Yes, more than just your money.

First of all we don’t want all of your money – just a small percentage actually. Secondly, we want your participation! That means you coming to all (or at least some) of the wonderful things mentioned above is also extremely important and demonstrates your support.

With all of the above in mind PLEASE take a moment and fill out the Membership Form and Calendar Ad Form found on our website,www.chabadatlacosta.com,  ASAP. Those simple documents help us know where we stand and where we should be going to help better serve you and your family’s needs.

All joking aside, please make the commitment to become an official member this year.

G-d bless you and your family with all manner of good, particularly good health, happiness, and success in all of your positive endeavors!

Sincerely,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

Special Wishes

HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes go out to Rusty Rack, Eric Mintz, and all of those celebrating their birthdays this week!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY wishes go out to all of those celebrating their anniversaries this week!

We remember Abraham Seigal and all of those who have a Yarzeit this week.

May Fran Sekela, Roz Mintz and Mel Bridge be blessed with a full and complete recovery!

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

No phones.jpg

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Message from the Rabbi

It’s that time of year. Shabbat is supposed to be a fast, commemorating the start of three weeks of mourning and sadness. But the fast will be delayed to Sunday out of deference for this special day of gladness and spiritual delight that G-d has gifted His people.

This sets the tone for the next three weeks. Yes, we will mourn. Yes, we will genuinely introspect and see what we can do better. But we will remember that there is more to life than sadness. There is Shabbat, there is joy, there is tranquility and hope.

temple_burning.jpg

Please join me in praying that we soon experience the day when G-d will “wipe the tears of every face,” as we enter the “day that is only Shabbat and rest for eternal life.”

Volume 17 Number 43, 9th of Tammuz 5776, July 15 '16

Message from the Rabbi

This week we will read of the passing of Aaron, brother of Moses and the first high priest. Although he was older than Moses, he was almost always overshadowed by his younger brother. He was a trusty spokesman, dependable aide and faithful surrogate.

Kohen Gadol.jpg

But there is another part to his personality. It was he who (unwillingly) presided over the creation of the Golden Calf. Contrite and deeply ashamed, Aaron appeared to be almost surprised that G-d chose him to act as high priest. Perhaps that’s precisely why G-d chose him.

Even if you make a boo-boo—even if it is a really big one—G-d will help you find your way back. Not only that, but if you really do your best to mend what you’ve torn, the fabric of your life will be even stronger than it was before.

Thursday, July 21st is our first Steak Night of the season. This year promises to be wonderful as we transform our breezeway into an elegant restaurant with white linen tablecloths, and eat on fine china with silverware. The complimentary drink selection will include wine. A perfectly grilled 16oz bone-in rib steak (not for the faint of heart) will be served with salads, potatoes, grilled onions and mushrooms, completed with a gourmet dessert.

Reservations by Tuesday should be made by clicking the image above, by calling 760-943-8891 or simply by responding to this message.

The all-inclusive cost is $36 per person.

The World is Trembling

Tragedies are mounting in a fast and furious manner all around the world. The forces of terror, both foreign and domestic, are letting loose, as we shake our heads and wonder, “When will the craziness finally end?!” We feel helpless for we keenly feel our own limitations as we say to ourselves, “If only I could speak to this one or that one, perhaps I could show him that life (meaning everyone’s life) is sacred and has meaning.”

Alas, we can’t.

Despite the frustration we must push on. Despite the pain we must push on. Despite the anger we must push on. Despite the fear we must push on.

The Jewish people are described as Tzivot Hashem, the Army of G-d. It is not by accident that we are called an army. Armies are for the purpose of defense and for the purpose of projecting power. And so perhaps during these tumultuous times we must examine the role we are to play, analyzing our purpose in this war. And yes, this is a war. It is no less than darkness versus light and good versus evil.

In our long, bitter exile the Jewish people have often been subjected to the whims of our neighbors. Many times they have been indifferent or even kind, but often times not so much. Our people have been victimized and brutalized, tortured, raped, and murdered, why? Because we are Jews, a small and weak minority – easily identified and therefore easily targeted.

The rise of modern Western civilization, which seemed so hopeful at first, has shown that it too can produce monsters. Even in modern day Europe and on today’s university campuses here in the US we see the reemergence of open anti-Semitism (dressed up in the guise of anti Israelism). Make no mistake about it, when Israel is singled out and vilified it is due to anti-Semitism.

But these days we see the insidious fingers of terror spreading out to a greater variety of targets. The terrorists target Jews of course, but they also target gays, African Americans, and police officers. One sees Sunni Muslim Islamists targeting Shi’a Muslim Islamists, while some Buddhists target Muslims and Muslims targeting Buddhists. Does it ever end!? Will it ever end!?

Remember, we are an army! That primarily means in the spiritual sense, of course. Our good deeds, particularly in the realm of loving each other as we love ourselves, do have an affect! The One, True Power will watch over us and protect us, but we must be careful not to chase Him away. These days, and quite miraculously, we have one of the finest armies in the world in the form of the IDF, the Israel Defense Forces. For the first time in two thousand years the Jewish people have a powerful and effective standing army ready to defend us, physically, from the anti-Semites surrounding us. Just seventy years ago such thing was only a dream. Today it is reality.

Further, more and more of the world sees moral leadership coming from Israel. Sending humanitarian supplies around the world on a moment’s notice has not gone unnoticed by the people of the world. But Israel’s leadership continues to grow in the realm of anti-terror tactics. Israel is currently exporting its expertise in security and the world is taking notice. The people of Israel have tried to tell the world for years that Israel’s war against terror is the world’s war against terror. That if terror strikes Israel with immunity (and with silence from the civilized world) it will eventually branch out and strike in those countries as well. Every week we see these prophecies coming true, may G-d have mercy! They justifiably cry for the innocent victims in Orlando, Paris, Brussels, Nice, Istanbul, and numerous other places, but are strangely silent when Tel Aviv or Efrat or Kiryat Arba are struck. Why?! We already know.

As time goes on and the attacks increase in frequency and we are subjected to more and more speeches from leadership that does not seem to understand the source of the threat and certainly does not seem to understand that we are indeed at war and must vanquish this threat (with force), we will find ourselves increasingly responsible to protect ourselves. Times are different and we have the right to learn how to defend ourselves. At this time I believe it is correct to say that we are obligated to learn how to protect ourselves.

We are an army! Let us train.

So we will protect ourselves and project our power through Torah and Mitzvot. But we will also support Israel and its extraordinary IDF. And, those of us with the willpower, will allow ourselves to be trained and prepare ourselves for all possible threats. G-d willing, our outstanding police will continue to keep us safe, but it can never hurt to be security-conscious ourselves.

May G-d Almighty have mercy on this dark world and help the forces of goodness vanquish, once and for all, the evil in this world. May G-dliness be finally fully revealed through the immediate arrival of our righteous Moshiach!

Hebrew School

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Our students want to be here!

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email info@ChabadatLaCosta.com your request.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email toinfo@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

This Shabbat is a very meaningful day. It marks 22 years since the passing of our Rebbe, of righteous memory.

A perusal of the Rebbe’s teachings reveals a pattern. The Rebbe would often encourage people to strive for what appears to be impossible: humility coupled with decisiveness, dizzying alacrity alongside patient attention to detail, intense Torah study leading to extensive interactions with others, and lofty spiritual inspiration paired with pragmatic groundedness.

Perhaps it was no surprise that the Rebbe devoted his life to bringing about the coming of Moshiach, which will be the ultimate fusion of opposites, when the infinite G-d will His home in our puny little world.

May it happen soon.

Message from the Rabbi

It has been a sad few days. Just after Islamic terrorists opened fire in Turkey's Istanbul Ataturk Airport, a Jewish teenager from Kiryat Arba was murdered in her bed the morning after a dance recital, and a father from Hebron was shot to death as his children watched from the backseat of their car.

What are we to make of this tragedy? What do we say to people burying the mangled remains of their fathers, mothers, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters?

I do not know.

There are times when no words can adequately express the deep feelings that come directly from our souls. As the Torah says after Aaron’s two sons died, “Aaron was silent.”

PeaceDove.jpgLet our governments turn with steely determination toward the sponsors of terror, letting them know through concrete action that their horrible acts will not go unchecked.

And let us turn heavenward, pleading in our hearts for the day when “they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.”

With all of the above in mind PLEASE take a moment and fill out the Membership Form and Calendar Ad Form found on our website, www.chabadatlacosta.com,  ASAP.

Jewish Art Calendar

We are now collecting ads for our gorgeous Jewish Art Calendars. Brenda Joseph will be helping manage this year’s edition so we expect it to be the best yet. Not only are the calendars lovely to look at, but they are full with information about Jewish holidays, special events, and even recipes! The special touch that we have is the personalization where we can add your own birthdays, anniversaries, or the Yarzeits of those you love.

We are also looking for a sponsor/dedication for this year’s calendar.

Participating in the calendar is an important way to support the Shul as well as advertise your business or personal event. Please call the office today for pricing information at 760-943-8891. The deadline for all orders is July 31st! All business ads paid for before July 15th receive a 10% discount.

Special Wishes

HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes go out to Russel Shirley, and all of those celebrating their birthdays this week!

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY wishes go out to all of those celebrating their anniversaries this week!

We remember all of those who have a Yarzeit this week.

May Fran Sekela, Roz Mintz and Mel Bridge be blessed with a full and complete recovery!

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to info@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
