Message from the Rabbi

Reb Levik.jpgThis week we marked the passing of Rabbi Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, father of the Rebbe, of righteous memory. Rabbi Levi Yitzchak was one of the lions of the Chabad resistance in Soviet Russia. He had an ironclad faith in G-d, and did not let overzealous party officials, heavy-handed bureaucrats, cruel judges or anyone else get between him and the Torah.

Thank G-d, we live in an era when we are free to serve G-d. Let us take Rabbi Levi Yitzchak’s example to heart, and do the right thing no matter how hard.

Open House 16 new.jpg
THIS SUNDAY!

We have just be contacted by CBS news that they plan on covering our event this Sunday, August 28th from 12 – 3pm as we will be hosting our annual Open House celebration! Highlights of the event will include the Shofar Factory (a live demonstration of how to make a Shofar and a chance to actually make one yourself!), Clowns, Face-Painting, Hot Dogs, Salads, Chips with Salad and Guacamole, a Virtual Reality Experience, Bounce House, Arts-n-Crafts, Challah Baking, a Certified Scribe (Sofer) will be on premises to check Mezuzos and Tefilin or to you provide any of your Judaica needs, Collectible Souvenirs, and so much more!

New additions: Do you have someone you love that you want to throw in the ‘hoosegow’ (for a very brief duration of time)? Now is your chance. US Territorial Marshals from the late 19th Century Old West will be on hand to apprehend, arrest, incarcerate, and free (on bail) your special loved one. Also, we will be turning our library into a Virtual Reality room. Not only that we have reserved World Famous Ventriloquist Extraordinaire Joe Gandelman who will be putting on a show!

This year’s event will be particularly special as we will be honoring our local police and fire departments! We have heroes in our midst! While we are busy running from danger they run to it, so as to protect us. Unfortunately many these days take them for granted, or worse. We owe them our gratitude. And so this year we are dedicating our Open House festivities to them. All local police and firefighters and their families have been invited to join us.

Our most sincere thanks go out to our wonderful sponsors, the Omni La Costa Resort, EmbroidMe Encinitas, The Jewish Journal, and Jon Rozansky Real Estate and Mortgage Services, and Yucatan Foods.

Those who would like to co-sponsor this event inquiries can be made by calling 760-943-8891 or sending an email to info@chabadatlacosta.com.

Dear Friend & Supporter,

We have had an exciting year here at your Jewish Center. So many programs – so many services, so many classes, so many parties, etc., but, and this is a big but, we have so much more to do! This is going to be a very big year. We are poised to offer more Jewish opportunities than ever before to you, our shul family.

Now, on to the business at hand. Everything that we do/provide to the community costs us money. We know that you already know this, but we have a mortgage that costs money, the electricity costs, the phone costs, the Internet access costs, the books cost, the food costs, and the gas in my car costs money. Due to these costs (and many more like them) we need friends to partner with us so that we can accomplish all that needs to be accomplished. Not to put too fine a point on it, but we need YOU. YOUR support is our lifeblood.

Of course we want more than just your money (“More than just my money?!,” you exclaim.). Yes, more than just your money.

First of all we don’t want all of your money – just a small percentage actually. Secondly, we want your participation! That means you coming to all (or at least some) of the wonderful things mentioned above is also extremely important and demonstrates your support.

With all of the above in mind PLEASE take a moment and fill out the Membership Form and Calendar Ad Form found on our website,www.chabadatlacosta.com,  ASAP. Those simple documents help us know where we stand and where we should be going to help better serve you and your family’s needs.

All joking aside, please make the commitment to become an official member this year.

G-d bless you and your family with all manner of good, particularly good health, happiness, and success in all of your positive endeavors!

Sincerely,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

Special Wishes

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY wishes go out to all of those celebrating their anniversaries this week!

minyan minion.jpgIf you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email info@ChabadatLaCosta.com your request.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

memorial-plates-250x250.jpg

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

donor leaf.jpg

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email toinfo@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Volume 17 Number 48, 15th of Av 5776, August 19th '16

Message from the Rabbi

They say that marriage is psychological. One partner is a psycho, and the other is logical.

In all seriousness, the Kabbalists tell us that husband and wife are two halves of one whole. Just like two parts of a word have meaning only when put together, so do husband and wife find meaning only once they have been united in marriage.

We are celebrating 15 Av, one of the happiest days of the Jewish year, which fetes (among other things) Jewish marriage.

Now for a secret. Even though husband and wife are two halves of one whole, there is actually a third partner in the mix: G-d.

It is only when we place Him, His Torah and His blueprint for morality at the center of our relationships that we can be sure they are strong, eternal and truly fulfilling.

Message from the Rabbi

This coming week will be the 9 Days, the saddest time of the year. As we remember the destruction of the Holy Temples and the desolation of Jerusalem, we don’t wash, don’t launder our clothes, and don’t participate in celebrations and other joyous events.

temple_burning.jpgBut I don’t like sad times of year. I much prefer to write about happy times. And so I turn to G-d and ask Him to finally bring the era in which He will “wipe tears from every face.”

May it happen soon. Amen.

Open House Scheduled

Heroes Honored

Sunday, August 28th from 12 – 3pm we will be hosting our annual Open House celebration! Highlights of the event will include the Shofar Factory (a live demonstration of how to make a Shofar and a chance to actually make one yourself!), Clowns, Face-Painting, Barbecue Lunch (no charge!), Bounce House, Arts-n-Crafts, a Certified Scribe (Sofer) will be on premises to check Mezuzos and Tefillin or to you provide any of your Judaica needs, and so much more!

New additions: Do you have someone you love that you want to throw in the ‘hoosecow’ (for a very brief duration of time)? Now is your chance. US Territorial Marshals from the late 19th Century Old West will be on hand to apprehend, arrest, incarcerate, and free (on bail) your special loved one. Also, we will be turning our library into a Virtual Reality room.

Sponsored by Chabad at La Costa, Chabad of Encinitas, the Omni La Costa and EmbroidMe Encinitas. Sponsorship available.  Those who would like to co-sponsor this event can inquire by calling 760-943-8891 or sending an email to info@chabadatlacosta.com.

PLEASE BE SURE TO JOIN US AND PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS!

The Three Weeks of Mourning

17th of Tammuz – 9th of Av

In our long history there have been times that have been particularly difficult. Most notably are the days associated with the destruction of the Holy Temples. The first Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in the year 586 BCE. First they laid siege to the City of Jerusalem, which happened on the 10th of the Hebrew month of Tevet. Then on the 17th of Tammuz they breached the outer walls of the city leading to its destruction three weeks later on the 9th of Av.

The days associated with the destruction of the Temples have been designated as fast days; days on which we are prohibited from eating or drinking. In fact, the entire period from the 17th of Tammuz until the 9th of Av (this year the 10th of Av because the 9th is on Shabbat and only fast on Shabbat when it coincides with Yom Kippur) is a time of sadness. We observe some of the rituals of mourning during this time. We are prohibited from listening to music, getting married, buying new clothes, and getting our hair cut. The observances become even stricter during the last nine days of the Three Weeks, when we cannot eat meat or drink wine, or take luxurious hot-baths and the like.

Our custom is to give extra charity on this day and to spend extra time in prayer and doing good deeds. Until such time that the Holy Temple is rebuilt – may it be speedily in our days – it is as though it was destroyed due the sins of our generation.

Membership Time – Have YOU Responded?

With all of the above in mind PLEASE take a moment and fill out the Membership Form and Calendar Ad Form found on our website, www.chabadatlacosta.com,  ASAP. Those simple documents help us know where we stand and where we should be going to help better serve you and your family’s needs.

All joking aside, please make the commitment to become an official member this year.

G-d bless you and your family with all manner of good, particularly good health, happiness, and success in all of your positive endeavors!

Sincerely,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

minyan minion.jpgIf you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please emailinfo@ChabadatLaCosta.com your request.

Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yahrzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yahrzeit.

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to info@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.
