Special Rosh Hashanah Update 27th of Elul 5776, Sept. 30th '16

Message from the Rabbi

A favorite childhood joke: How do you make a hotdog stand? Take away his seat.

Jokes aside, this week’s Torah portion is called Nitzavim, which means “standing.” Appropriately, it is read right before Rosh Hashanah, when we stand in judgment before G-d.

But the Hebrew word “Nitzavim” means more than just standing because we have no seat. It means standing tall and proud.

Yes, we are a nation united by a common G-d, a common commitment to goodness, and a common Torah. When we stand united by the bonds of solidarity, we stand tall and proud, ready for Rosh Hashanah.

High Holidays General Information, Aliyahs, & Appeal

Shofar Pom lg.jpg

Dear Friends,

Are you ready for the High Holidays?!

Have you prepared yourself for this most-awesome time of the year? Have you made a good-faith spiritual accounting identifying both your strengths and your weaknesses?

Well, our team has been busily preparing for the Days of Awe and we are looking forward with confidence that we can make sure you have the most positive experience imaginable. Not only will you feel inspired and joyful during our services, you will feel motivated and empowered to make the New Year a great one!

No membership is required to join us. No tickets are required to join us.The only things required to join us are a willing spirit and reservations (by calling 760-943-8891, or via email; info@chabadatlacosta.com). Donations are gratefully accepted – www.chabadatlacosta.com/donate.

There will be a great Junior Congregation program offered so the children will enjoy the High Holiday experience. There will be the best Hebrew/English Holiday Prayer Books available. There will be an elegant and comfortable atmosphere as we bask in the radiance of our new building. Best of all, there will be beautiful Cantorial renditions by Rabbi Yossi, and profound sermons by Rabbi Eilfort meant to bring the lessons of the High Holiday to youwhere you are.

Due to the enormous generosity of an anonymous sponsor this year we are offering Holiday Dinners on each night of Rosh Hashanah, and a pre-fast meal on Erev Yom Kippur at no charge (though donations are greatly appreciated).

This time of year is an extremely important time for our community. We get the chance of enjoying the company of several new friends and neighbors who venture in to try us out. But additionally it is a time when people increase their generosity and support of ‘G-d’s home in the neighborhood.’ As we all know it takes funding to keep the lights on, and that we have no outside sources of revenue. We are entirely reliant uponyou, our friends to keep the bills paid.

Gears (animated)In consideration of this perhaps you would like to have or sponsor an Aliyah on the High Holidays? It is considered a very great honor and merit for you and your family. In fact, we are taught that Tzedakah (Charity) has the strength to save even from death! If you are interested in participating in this, the greatest Mitzvah, please contact the Rabbi IMMEDIATELY atYEilfort@Gmail.com. Even if you do not want the Aliyah yourself, by virtue of your sponsorship you accrue all of the great merit associated with it! Please participate early and often.

If you know of anyone who needs a place for the Holidays please feel free to invite him/her to join us. The more the merrier!

Wishing you and your entire family Kesiva vi’Chasima Tovah - that you should be written in and sealed for a GREAT year!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Message from the Rabbi

Shofar Pom lg.jpg

There’s no getting around it. Rosh Hashanah is fast approaching. Rabbis all over the world are fine-tuning their speeches; cantors are rehearsing the prayers; and the organized homemakers among us already have pans of tzimmes, brisket and more stacked in the freezer.

But the most important thing to prepare is the shofar-blowing. After all, that is the central mitzvah of the holiday. Obviously, the best place to hear shofar is during services, among fellow Jews. But what if you know someone who is unable to leave home, or someone who does not feel connected enough to come to shul? The Rebbe encouraged that we visit these Jews (provided that they are within walking distance) and blow shofar for them. Do you know someone who can use a “housecall”? Please let me know ASAP so that arrangements can be made.

Gears (animated)Shabbat Selichot – Important Service Saturday Night @ Midnight – THIS WEEK

This Shabbat has a special name, Shabbat Selichot. It is called this because on Saturday night, at midnight, we begin saying the special Selichot Prayers, which are prayers of supplication meant to spiritually arouse us and move us to return to G-d with a full heart.

The High Holiday season begins officially at midnight on Saturday (technically on Sunday) for the recitation of the beautifully haunting services, which takes about an hour. We begin at midnight because that is the earliest possible time these prayers may be recited, and we are demonstrating our eagerness to engage fully with the Almighty.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate!

Message from the Rabbi

We’ve just begun the month of Elul, in which we prepare ourselves for the High Holidays. Chassidic tradition tells us that this is a month of spiritual stocktaking. We need to take good looks at ourselves and determine where we have improved over the past year and where we still need to improve during the coming year.

thinking.jpgWhen are we to do all this accounting? Traditionally, the time for this is at night. Yes, after the dishes have been washed, and you’ve finished your work for the day, sit down with a siddur and say the nighttime Shema. And when you do so, let your mind wander. Think about your day. Think about your week. Think about your year.

Think about yourself.

Do that for a month, and I guarantee you’ll have a different Rosh Hashanah.

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email toinfo@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Mazal tov! We are about to begin a new month: Elul.

This tells us that there is just one month left before Rosh Hashanah. Starting this week, we will be blowing the shofar every morning in anticipation, and examining our deeds with trepidation.

ShofarI want to share with you a simple thought about the shofar. The horn is attached to the animal on the stout end, with the pointy part facing outwards. Yet when we blow the shofar, we must bring the narrow end close to our lips.

My lesson: Sometimes you gotta turn things upside down to get results.

Membership Time – Have YOU Responded?

Dear Friend & Supporter,

We have had an exciting year here at your Jewish Center. So many programs – so many services, so many classes, so many parties, etc., but, and this is a big but, we have so much more to do! This is going to be a very big year. We are poised to offer more Jewish opportunities than ever before to you, our shul family.

Now, on to the business at hand. Everything that we do/provide to the community costs us money. We know that you already know this, but we have a mortgage that costs money, the electricity costs, the phone costs, the Internet access costs, the books cost, the food costs, and the gas in my car costs money. Due to these costs (and many more like them) we need friends to partner with us so that we can accomplish all that needs to be accomplished. Not to put too fine a point on it, but we need YOU. YOUR support is our lifeblood.

Of course we want more than just your money (“More than just my money?!,” you exclaim.). Yes, more than just your money.

First of all we don’t want all of your money – just a small percentage actually. Secondly, we want your participation! That means you coming to all (or at least some) of the wonderful things mentioned above is also extremely important and demonstrates your support.

With all of the above in mind PLEASE take a moment and fill out the Membership Form and Calendar Ad Form found on our website, www.chabadatlacosta.com,  ASAP. Those simple documents help us know where we stand and where we should be going to help better serve you and your family’s needs.

All joking aside, please make the commitment to become an official member this year.

G-d bless you and your family with all manner of good, particularly good health, happiness, and success in all of your positive endeavors!

Sincerely,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

Special Wishes
