A Thought from the Rabbi

Can you hear Moshiach’s footsteps?

There have been some incredible events taking place around the world. The winds are a-changing, and for the better at that!

The honorable US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has been a breath of fresh air. The welcome news that the US will (finally) be moving the US Embassy to Israel’s capital, Jerusalem, has been passionately and eloquently announced (and defended) by the good ambassador.

Before you get taken in by the numerous ‘fake news’ outlets about how this will turn the whole middle east into a cauldron of hate and destruction please consider the following: Israel is THE only country in the world that the UN has tried to deny the right to pick its own capital. The portion in Jerusalem where the Knesset is located is in the part that has always been under Israeli control and has never been and never will be subject to any negotiations. The armistice lines established in 1948 (after all of Israel’s neighbors illegally invaded the Jewish state on its first day of existence) were NEVER meant to be borders in any event. Israel has NO legal obligation to remove her sovereignty over an inch of Jerusalem, west or east. Never has the world united to dictate to another sovereign country where it could place its embassy. The Chutzpah of the UN dictating to the US is astonishing.

So when these ‘fake news’ outlets begin trumpeting their dooms day prognostications you should understand that it is all a bunch of hot air. Even if it would be true, which it isn’t, why should Israel’s capital be chosen by the anti-Semites who seek to destroy her? And that is EXACTLY what this is all about. Bad old anti-Semitism again rearing its ugly head.

Thank G-d, the US is clear-sighted enough to recognize that there is no peace possible without Jerusalem as the Jewish state’s capital. If declaring the obvious is a cause for war there was never any peace to begin with and no peace is possible. The hypocrisy of the world, though no longer a surprise, is still just as sickening as it always has been. The Jews and their state have always been subjected to a double standard. Finally the US is turning the pressure on the Palestinians to make peace instead of the one party that has always made concessions and gestures for peace. The US has FINALLY STOPPED BLAMING THE VICTIM!

Every Jew and every lover of Israel and Hashem owes a sincere thank you to the US government for this change of policy! There is still a very long way to go. The US gives lots of material support to the Palestinian Authority, support that is used to fund terrorism against Israel. The PA must be defunded, its mission in Washington closed down, and to be identified for what it is and what it always has been, a terrorist organization. But this Jerusalem move is a very good start!

Am Yisroel Chai!

Services with Joy & Meaning

Those who attend our Shabbat services always feel better than when they came. Some feel better because they enjoy the beautiful melodies we sing together, while others do because of feelings of closeness with G-d that they experience, while still others enjoy the Rabbi’s sermon. The delicious Kiddush served at the end is a perfect way to bring the entire experience to a successful conclusion as we enjoy each other’s company and wonderful food. Whatever it is you may be seeking in your spiritual life there is a good chance you will find it here every Saturday from 10am – 12:30pm. You don’t have to be an expert in Jewish practice to benefit – you just have to be willing to give it a try. There is nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Weekly Update 4th of Teves 5778, December 22 '17

Message from the Rabbi

This Thursday is 10 Tevet, a fast day that commemorates the date when the armies of the Babylonian emperor Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Jerusalem. Thirty months later the city walls were breached, and the Holy Temple was destroyed.

Besides for fasting and reciting extra prayers, I’d like to suggest that this is a most appropriate day to strengthen our protective walls. No, I do not mean walls of stone, wire, or anything like that. Rather, I mean the ropes of love that bind our nation together, joining us into a single unbreakable unit of Jewish peoplehood.

Look around you. Is there a fellow Jew who can use a little TLC? Is there someone who may be drifting away from Judaism and Jewish life? Now’s the perfect time to pick up the phone and reach out.

You’ll feel good about it, and you will have done your part in the ongoing program to rebuild Jerusalem.

A Heart-Felt Request from the Rabbi

Dear Friends,

As we approach the end of the year it is time to take stock. Just as we are meant to examine ourselves on the Jewish New Year, particularly regarding our spiritual situation, so too we should use the end of the secular year to examine our material situation.

Thank G-d, we live in a place and time of unprecedented wealth and plenty. In all human history there has never been a time of such riches finding their way into the hands of so many. Yet unfortunately, many do not feel rich. Some people choose to focus on that which they do not have instead of that which they do have. For instance, I bet that nobody reading this article is worried about where his next meal is coming from or if he will have a roof over his head next week. These are the types of worries that previous generations had.

Every one of us should feel rich! While it may be true that we would like more (money, clothes, vacations etc.) it would probably be hard to argue that we need more. In the Ethics of Our Fathers (the ethical teachings in Judaism) we are taught; “Who is rich? He who is satisfied with what he has.” He who trains himself to be happy with his lot will be as happy as the richest person on the planet, in fact it can be argued that he is the richest person on the planet.

It is with this in mind that I am asking for your help at this time. Many are thinking ahead to April 15th, Tax Day. Many are now making their decision about how much they want to contribute to a worthy cause and to therefore be able to maximize their tax deductions. I am asking that you include Chabad in your plans.

Your tax-deductible contribution does so much! It enables us to do something as simple as keep the lights on or bring chicken soup to someone who is not well, and it also helps us do something as sublime as teach a child the beauty of his/her heritage or hold inspirational services every Shabbat. Your generous contributions help us do all that we do, which makes you our partner in everything we accomplish. Indeed you are being offered the opportunity of ‘getting in on the ground level’ of the best investment possible; an investment with guaranteed results!

Please take a moment to share your gratitude for all that you have been blessed with by sharing with others. Please take a moment to log onto our secure website www.chabadatlacosta.com/donate, and make a profound difference in the life of all those whom we touch. You can also make your donation via check if that is more convenient.

G-d has given you the ultimate privilege, and that is to be His partner in perfecting this physical and mundane physical world and transforming it into something G-dly and beautiful!

G-d bless you for your generosity and support!

Sincerely,

Rabbi Eilfort

Haftarah Overview

By: Gabbai Harold Reisman

Ezekiel 37:15-28

Ezekiel was the only prophet who prophesied outside the boundaries of Israel. The exile that had occurred during his life seemed to signify a heavenly rejection. Ezekiel's task was one of reassurance. Although the time of trial was a punishment, the eternal covenant remained in place. He used the symbolism of two pieces of wood held together as a sign of the future "wholeness" and redemption. The "single nation" will rid itself of all its abominations and become purified.

Just as Yosef and Yehudah came together in loving unity, so will all factions of the Jewish people unite and internecine conflict will end. Some modern rabbis have taken the formation of Israel and the ingathering of the exiles as stages in the redemptive process.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing’. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to info@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Communication: Its Art and Soul

6-Part Series Starts January 23rd

Can you express yourself effectively in 140 characters or less? Should you?

The rise of the internet, mobile phones, and social media has completely changed the way we relate, interact, and communicate with one another—and it’s high time we reclaim this lost art.

In Jewish philosophy, communication is more than just a tool: it is who we are. Humans are defined as communicative beings with a communicative soul, and aligning ourselves with this soul is our raison d’être.

In Communication: Its Art and Soul, we contrast Jewish thought with scientific discovery to unearth the essence of communication and how to utilize its powers to better ourselves, our relationships, and all of society.

This excellent 6-part series, with CME certification and CE certification for Medical and Mental Health professionals, begins on Tuesday, January 23rd and continues for six consecutive Tuesdays from 7-9pm. For further information call 760-943-8891, email info@ChabadatLaCosta.com or sign up at myJLI.com.

Haftarah Overview

By: Gabbai Harold Reisman

Amos  2:6-3:8

The prophesies of Amos stressed the obligations of the people of Israel that arise from being the elected of Hashem. During Amos' life, there was prosperity and relative peace, but widespread idolatry also existed. There was a concentration of wealth but also corruption and immorality.

(Some things seem never to change.)

The phrase "for a pair of shoes" relates to the selling of Joseph and the corresponding belief that the brothers bought shoes with the money received. The greatest sin - according to Amos - was the oppression of the poor. Amos speaks out against the lack of shame of those who continue to  oppress the poor. In later verses (5:14-15) Amos wrote: "Seek good and not evil, love good and hate evil, and establish justice in the gates."

Weekly Update 12th of Kislev 5778, November 30 '17

Message from the Rabbi

The ninth day of the month of Kislev is the anniversary of both the birth and the passing of Rabbi Dov Ber, the second Chabad rebbe. One of his most famous sayings is, “When two Jews get together and one tells the other what ails his heart, the result is two G dly souls taking on a single animal soul.”

An axiom of Chabad belief is that we each have a G-dly soul and an animal soul constantly battling for dominion over our selves. The good news is that our animal souls are essentially selfish. The G-dly souls, on the other hand, are altruistic in their desire to serve G-d, and are beyond the petty barriers that stand between us.

So reach out to your fellow in need. Help them with something, and know that your G-dly souls will have joined forces as only they can!

Great Debates in Jewish History – The Rambam Controversy

6-Part Series Concludes December 5th

Debate and disputation are not only encouraged within Judaism but reside at the very heart of Jewish history and theology. Chabad at La Costa in conjunction with the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) presents Great Debates in Jewish History, a six-session course exploring six fundamental conflicts that pit the greatest Jewish minds against each other--six instances of vastly divergent perspectives from throughout our history, including several that remain questions for us today.

Discover a stirring and surprising account of Judaism’s intellectual history, from the ancient to the modern-day; as you relive epochs rich in narrative that provide fascinating context for six of the most monumental intellectual and theological debates in our history.

The parade of characters presented in this course spans two millennia of biblical, rabbinic, and modern disputation, reflecting the panorama of Jewish history with its monumental political, ethical, and spiritual challenges.

This excellent 6-part series, with each individual class understandable by itself, begins on Tuesday, October 31st and continues for six consecutive Tuesdays from 7-9pm. For further information call 760-943-8891, emailinfo@ChabadatLaCosta.com or log onto to www.chabadatlacosta.com.

Haftarah Overview

By: Gabbai Harold Reisman

Ovadiah  1:1-21

The entire book of Ovadiah is one chapter long and is this Haftarah. It was selected because of the Parashah and its detailing of the meeting of Yaakov and Esav. Actually, three Parashiot (Toldot, Vayeitzei and Vayishlach) all contain references to the struggle of Yaakov and Esav.

There are two world views placed in complete opposition. Esav/Edom can be compared to Rome, Byzantium and Christendom. There is a strong tendency to transform what is current and contemporary into what is timeless and perpetual. History has shown us that the past has strongly colored our own experiences.

The view that Esav/Edom as a spiritual and ideological force exists throughout the ages. These contradictory forces may exist in every person. Our guard should be applied not only to external - but also to internal - beliefs and tendencies. Modern psychological theory has defined and characterized these internal forces in every person. These forces must be recognized and negative tendencies understood and fought.
