Chabad Weekly Update 29th of Adar 5778, March 16th '18

Thursday, 22 March, 2018 - 5:32 pm

Message from the Rabbi

This week we begin reading from the Book of Vayikra (Leviticus). Unlike the first two books which are preoccupied with narrative, this book is mainly a series of prophetic lectures from G-d to Moses, detailing the laws governing the sacrificial rites in the Temple.

Each lengthy communication begins with a general introduction, “And G-d spoke to Moses, saying.” But within a single Divine monologue there are breaks in the physical text of the Torah scroll. A paragraph break in the Torah, as in any text, signals the end of one scene and the beginning of another. Why does the Torah interrupt G-d’s speech with a textual division if He is still talking to Moses?

The simplest explanation is often the best. And here that explanation is that although G-d was in the middle of one communication, He made frequent pauses to allow Moses time to digest the avalanche of intricate laws he was receiving.

So the message I leave you with this week is to not be afraid to ask for silence, to pause and think about what you experienced or learned yesterday, so you can be prepared for whatever lies on tomorrow’s horizon.

Chabad Weekly Update

Minyans Needed – Please Participate

Rabbi Eilfort needs a Minyan for his mother’s Yarzeit Monday morning at 8am, and Monday evening at 6:30pm. If you are able to help with any/all of these services please respond to this message as soon as possible. Thank you in advance and G-d bless!

Special Shabbat – Please Join Us

This Shabbat is also Rosh Chodesh Nissan, the month of Miracles because Passover occurs during this month. Not only will we be reading the portion of VaYikra, but we will also be reading Parshat HaChodesh, which details when the Almighty commanded the Jews to sanctify this month and all subsequent months. In addition we will be reading about the sacrifice that was brought on Rosh Chodesh. That means we will be using three (3) Torahs! Lots and lots of specialness this week. Please join us for this special time!

Kiddush Sponsor

This week’s Kiddush is sponsored by Rabbi and Mrs Eilfort in honor of the Yarzeit of Raizel Fylah Eilfort (Rabbi’s mother). It is also being sponsored by Sheila Lebovitz in honor of the Yarzeit of her late husband Norman Lebovitz.

A full, gourmet lunch will be served.

Everyone is invited to join us for this beautiful weekly gathering.

Kiddush Sponsorship

The Beauty of Our Kiddush

Every week following services we enjoy a beautiful Kiddush luncheon together. Such an amazing Kiddush doesn’t create itself. Thank G-d, we have a dedicated Kiddush crew, led by Naomi Alter and including Channah Hale, Sheila Lebovitz, the Rebbetzin, and several others, who make our Kiddush into something beautiful and enjoyable. But it takes more than willing hands to make the food. It also takes generous souls to sponsor the food. Without a sponsor the cost must come out of our operating budget, which is already stretched thin as it is.

If you have been a beneficiary of the Kiddush and haven’t sponsored it for a while please step forward now. Even if you have recently sponsored and kind find it in your heart to sponsor it again we need you. Kiddush sponsorship starts at $180. But if you want something a bit more lavish with more variety you can add to that amount, and it is all, very much, appreciated. It is also a very big blessing that you have facilitated ‘Oneg Shabbat’ (the enjoyment of Shabbos) for the entire congregation! Our Shabbat prayers describe the special blessings achieved by such generosity!

Thank you and G-d bless!

PLEASE BE SURE TO JOIN US AND PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS!

Passover Plans ‘18

Chabad at La Costa will again be offering a full array of Passover activities designed to educate the Jewish residents of North County in an engaging and meaningful way while encouraging additional observance of the special Passover traditions.

Chabad will be hosting a complete schedule of joyous and meaningful holiday services (holiday flyer mailed today).

The highlight of the holiday are the warm and traditional Sedarim (traditional Passover meals). When the rabbis, of blessed memory, codified the Seder, they managed to create the ultimate in interactive learning opportunities. The hands-on approach of the Seder, and the inclusive nature of the narrative, ensures that everyone – particularly the children – have a meaningful experience that will not only make a strong positive impression now, but will create positive lifelong memories. Everyone is invited to partake of our home-cooked, Kosher for Passover, Sedarim. Information and reservations can be made by visiting www.ChabadatLaCosta.com.

Special Pesach Fund

At this time of year it is has been a long-standing tradition amongst Jews the world over to give extra charity to help the poor for Passover. Passover needs tend to be more costly than some families can afford. It is for this reason that Chabad at La Costa will again be raising money for distribution. This fund is called “Ma’ot Chitim,” which literally means money for bread.

We need you to be as generous as you can to help the less fortunate Jews here and abroad. Perhaps you can donate $108 so a family can be sponsored for our communal Seder? Please go online and use the secure donation link at www.ChabadatLaCosta.com. G-d promises those who give charity that it as if they have made a personal loan to the Almighty, and He always pays back, with interest!

Haftarah Overview

By Gabbai Harold Reisman

Ezekiel  45:16-46:18

Rosh Chodesh Nissan is the time for mental and physical preparation for the Pesach festival. Both mind and body must be involved. The Haftarah details essential needs and works of the "Prince in Israel". While one cannot perform rituals prescribed for the Temple, the lessons and admonitions are clear. The many and complex preparations then can be mirrored by mental and physical preparations now. While many of the steps in the Haftarah cannot be acted upon, we can substitute both in our homes (physically) and in our minds (mentally) those acts of purification which are possible now in the modern world.

The final phrases (v. 16-18) are a clear warning to the leaders of Israel which relate to actions the year round. These negatives must be avoided not only on Pesach, but through the entire year.

New JLI Course Beginning in April

What is?

Rethinking everything we know

about our universe

Imagine that you were able to rethink everything you knew about the universe, the laws of nature, your own consciousness, and the very idea of existence and reality. Imagine the new insights you will gain, the fresh perspective with which you will embark on the journey of life each morning.

What is? does exactly that. Drawing on the wisdom of Chassidic teaching, the most basic building blocks of existence are reexamined from the bottom up, revolutionizing our understanding of life, reality, and our place in the world.

Here are some of the highlights:

Lesson One
Is the World Real?

Everything that we experience, we experience inside our heads, leading to the intriguing question: Maybe there is no existence outside of our minds? But perhaps a more fundamental question would be: What practical difference does it make if the world is real or not?

Lesson Two
Is Time Travel Possible?

Is time the engine that drives the whole of existence, or is it just a product of our subjective experience? If the future is impenetrable, the past irretrievable, and the present moment too fleeting to meaningfully inhabit, what part of our lives can we call our own?

Lesson Three
Why does evil exist?

Why do bad things happen to good people? The question has been asked—and answered—for thousands of years. But even if we understood the purpose of evil, would this make it more palatable and acceptable? Would it aid us in our efforts to defeat evil?

Lesson Four
Who is G-d?

What are we talking about when we talk about G-d? Is “G-d” just a word we use when we can’t explain something? If G-d cannot be explained or described, does this not render the concept of “belief in G-d” completely meaningless?

Lesson Five
What is consciousness?

All injustice and strife, and even personal unhappiness, can be traced to selfishness. Yet self-esteem is essential for a healthy psyche and a productive life. To navigate this paradox, we first need to unravel the mystery of self-awareness: Where does our sense of self come from?

Lesson Six
Are we bound by fate?

If G-d already knows what we will do tomorrow, is our “free choice” nothing more than an illusion? And with so many powerful influences outside of our control—or even our awareness—influencing our choices, how “free” could they possibly be?

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing’. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to info@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
