JLI Course Continues Chabad at La Costa in conjunction with the Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) will present Strength and Struggle: Lessons in Character from the Stories of Our Prophets, the institute’s new six-session for Spring 2016. Rabbi and Rebbetzin Eilfort will conduct the six course sessions. Strength and Struggle: Lessons in Character from the Stories of Our Prophets, a brand-new six-session course by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, explores six intriguing, disturbing, and controversial biblical personalities and events from the times of the Prophets: Jephthah’s daughter, the rise and fall of King Saul, Ruth’s migration to Israel, King David and Bathsheba, the wonders of Elisha, and Jonah and the fish. Through textual analysis and by exploring the ideas offered by classic biblical commentaries, this course offers a snapshot of the first Jewish commonwealth, an era that lasted nearly one thousand years, and probes the aforementioned personalities within their broad historical and sociological contexts, allowing us to reach deep into the essence of these figures and events. At first it may seem that these stories are full of questions. We will discover, however, that they are full of timeless answers to our innermost questions about life. Like all JLI programs, Strength and Struggle is designed to appeal to people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship. Interested students may call 760-943-8891 or visit www.myJLI.com for registration and other course-related information. Weekly Class Schedule Shabbat: During Mincha – Women’s Issues with the Rebbetzin Hebrew School – Sunday 9:30 – 12:05 Monday: Caffeine for the Soul – for Women @ Target, Encinitas – 12pm Tuesday: JLI – 7pm Wednesday: Portion of the Week with Rabbi E – 7:30pm Shavuot is Coming
It is considered a great Mitzvah to listen to the 10 Commandments. Year after year, since the year 2448 in the Jewish Calendar (we are now in the year 5776), Jews all over the world, wherever they lived, endeavored to listen to the timeless words of the Torah. We will use our very special Holocaust Torah to mark this awesome occasion. Shavuot is one of the Biblical Holidays, when the Jews would make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Another way we mark the importance of the day is by reciting the Yizkor Memorial Prayer on the 2nd day of the holiday for our deceased loved ones and to remember Jewish martyrs from history. Jewish Art Calendar
Participating in the calendar is an important way to support the Shul as well as advertise your business or personal event. Please call the office today for pricing information at 760-943-8891. Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family. We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yahrzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yahrzeit.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).
The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891. Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Shul Etiquette Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family. At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul. It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like. Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services. We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here! Please Patronize Our Sponsors Your Chabad Real Estate Agent & Mortgage Broker Jonathan Rozansky is a licensed realtor and mortgage professional. Lag B’Omer BBQ @ Carlsbad State Beach
Lag B’Omer means the 33rd day of the Omer. The days from the 2nd of Passover until Shavuot are counted as a divine commandment as we count down the days to receive the Torah. The time in between these two great holidays is very sad, however, for it was during this time that 24,000 students of the great Rabbi Akiva died. They finally stopped dying on Lag B’Omer. In addition, Lag B’Omer is the Yarzeit of the great Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai (the Rashbi), who asked that his Yarzeit be celebrated. For these reasons Lag B’Omer is considered a very joyous day where we traditionally participate in outings enjoying the great outdoors. We will be holding our Annual Lag B’Omer Celebration at Carlsbad State Beach, directly across from the Encinas Power Plant (our usual location). Barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs will be on the menu as well as salads, drinks, and watermelon for dessert. Please be sure to bring a sweatshirt and a beach chair (or something else to sit on) for your comfort. Our Lag B’Omer celebration will take place on Thursday, May 26 from 6 - 8pm. The cost to attend is $15 per adult and $10 per child (3 – 12), not to exceed $75 per family. Please reserve your place by calling 760-943-8891 or by email to [email protected] no later than Tuesday, May 8th. Shavuot is Coming
The Holiday of Shavuot marks the anniversary on which G-d gave the Jewish people the Torah. This is considered the single greatest event in all of history. To celebrate we make sure to attend the synagogue and listen to the Torah reading of the 10 Commandments (bring your friends, too). We also stay up (all night if possible) learning Torah, eat dairy meals, and joyously celebrate this awesome event. Please note the special services and times found in the shul Shavuot brochure that we are mailing shortly. It is considered a great Mitzvah to listen to the 10 Commandments. Year after year, since the year 2448 in the Jewish Calendar (we are now in the year 5776), Jews all over the world, wherever they lived, endeavored to listen to the timeless words of the Torah. We are now starting to collect ads for our gorgeous Jewish Art Calendars. Not only are the calendars lovely to look at, but they are full with information about Jewish holidays, special events, and even recipes! The special touch that we have is the personalization where we can add your own birthdays, anniversaries, or the Yarzeits of those you love. We are also looking for a sponsor/dedication for this year’s calendar. Participating in the calendar is an important way to support the Shul as well as advertise your business or personal event. Please call the office today for pricing information at 760-943-8891. The deadline for all orders is June 30th! All ads paid for before the end of May receive a 10% discount. Special Wishes HAPPY BIRTHDAY wishes go out to Ilana Steelman, and Chava Eilfort, and all of those celebrating their birthdays this week! HAPPY ANNIVERSARY wishes go out to Rabbi Elia and Chaya Eilfort, and all of those celebrating their anniversaries this week! We remember all of those who have a Yarzeit this week. Over the course of this past Passover we engaged many, many people in the beautiful traditions and commandments associated with this special holiday. Numerous people enjoyed our Sedarim – in fact, we had to add a second Community Seder due to the demand, and hundreds upon hundreds of hand-baked Shmurah Matzos were distributed all over the County so people could fulfill the commandment in the best way possible. These types of activities are why we are here, and why our services are so important. We both guard and grow the light of Judaism, and we spread it throughout the entire area.
Although many responded generously to our Passover Appeal many did not yet done so and as a result we are running a serious deficit. Can you step up now and help us cover our shortfall? Please visit our website and make an online donation today – so we can close the books on this Passover Season in the clear. Chabad Weekly Update
Mazel Tov! It’s a Boy! We are most excited to announce the birth of a baby boy to Rabbi Eliahu Nachum and Mrs. Chaya Eilfort this week in New York! The Rabbi and Rebbetzin are headed to New York to meet their new grandchildren and attend the Bris of their grandson. The Rebbetzin will be staying a few extra days so she can help the new mommies and their babies. Please note that due to these joyous events and the fact that Rabbi Yossi won’t be back until the middle of the month several classes will regrettably have to be cancelled. The congregation will be informed when the classes are to resume. However, regular Shabbat services will continue.
Kiddush this Shabbat Several families, individuals, and Hebrew School students have gotten together to co-sponsor this week’s Kiddush in honor of Mother’s Day! If you would like to participate but have not yet responded the cost is only $18 per person for a sponsorship. Please contact Linda Rivkin at[email protected]. Everyone is invited to join us for this beautiful weekly gathering! Kiddush Sponsorship If you have not sponsored a Kiddush for a while and/or if you have a birthday, anniversary, or perhaps a Yarzeit you wish to mark, please respond to this message. Kiddush sponsorship begins at $180.
Dear Friends, I’m writing to ask for your help. But we can only do so with your generous support! Although many responded generously to our Passover Appeal many did not yet done so and as a result we are running a serious deficit. Can you step up now and help us cover our shortfall? Please visit our website and make an online donation today – so we can close the books on this Passover Season in the clear. Simply log ontowww.chabadatlacosta.com/donate and participate in this great Mitzvah, or mail in a check today. Thank you and G-d bless! Sincerely, Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort New JLI Course Beginning Chabad at La Costa in conjunction with the Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) will presentStrength and Struggle: Lessons in Character from the Stories of Our Prophets, the institute’s new six-session for Spring 2016. Please note that the start date of the class has been moved to Tuesday, May 17th at 7pm.
Interested students may call 760-943-8891or visit www.myJLI.com for registration and other course-related information.

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Our students want to be here! Need a Minyan? If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected]your request. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
