Message from the Rabbi

You’ve probably heard the old joke: What does the waiter say to the group of Jewish mothers? “Is anything OK?”

But seriously, our people have an old knack for kvetching. In this week’s portion our ancestors drove poor Moses to distraction with their complaints about the heavenly cuisine they were served daily by G-d Himself.

In hindsight, they seem pretty foolish.

Sometimes I wonder if I act like them.

Shabbat shalom.jpg

Is it sometimes hard to pay the mortgage? Yes, but thank G-d I have a house. Is my child giving me grief? Yes, but I am so fortunate to be blessed with children. Are there days when the going is rough? Absolutely, but hey, I’m going!

From every episode in the Torah we can learn something. And the complainers in the desert teach us how we should never act. We have so much good in our life. Let’s try not to focus on the little bits and pieces that are still falling into place.

(And don’t worry about the comedians; they’ll find another Jewish trait to poke fun of.)

Dear Friend & Supporter,

We have had an exciting year here at your Jewish Center. So many programs – so many services, so many classes, so many parties, etc., but, and this is a big but, we have so much more to do! This is going to be a very big year. We are poised to offer more Jewish opportunities than ever before to you, our shul family.

Now, on to the business at hand. Everything that we do/provide to the community costs us money. We know that you already know this, but we have a mortgage that costs money, the electricity costs, the phone costs, the Internet access costs, the books cost, the food costs, and the gas in my car costs money. Due to these costs (and many more like them) we need friends to partner with us so that we can accomplish all that needs to be accomplished. Not to put too fine a point on it, but we need YOU. YOUR support is our lifeblood.

Of course we want more than just your money (“More than just my money?!,” you exclaim.). Yes, more than just your money.

First of all we don’t want all of your money – just a small percentage actually. Secondly, we want your participation! That means you coming to all (or at least some) of the wonderful things mentioned above is also extremely important and demonstrates your support.

With all of the above in mind PLEASE take a moment and fill out the Membership Form and Calendar Ad Form found on our website,www.chabadatlacosta.com,  ASAP. Those simple documents help us know where we stand and where we should be going to help better serve you and your family’s needs.

All joking aside, please make the commitment to become an official member this year.

G-d bless you and your family with all manner of good, particularly good health, happiness, and success in all of your positive endeavors!

Sincerely,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

Hebrew School

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Our students want to be here!

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email info@ChabadatLaCosta.com your request.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email toinfo@ChabadatLaCosta.com, or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Message from the Rabbi

Shavuot was a spiritual blast (and a gastronomical delight). Are you wondering what to do with all that holy energy?

Study ClassWhat does a kid do after you give him a toy car? He plays with it. What does a woman do after she is given a piece of lovely jewelry? She wears it. What do the Jews do with the Torah after receiving it from G-d? We learn it.

Yep, the Torah is endless. Just dive in and start swimming. Need some swimming lessons? That’s what I’m here for. Give me a holler, and we’ll set up a syllabus just for you.

Rabbi’s Thoughts

This week is a particularly difficult, as this week the long arm of terror again struck our shores. A Jihadi brought his hateful ideology to a dance club in Orlando, Florida, ruthlessly murdering 49 innocents and wounding more than 50 others. That is the cause of this tragedy, the rest is just a sad side show. We must not allow ourselves to become distracted by all of the competing agendas vying for our attention.

In Judaism we know that human life is considered sacred and takes precedence over the Mitzvot in the Torah. We are commanded to die rather than murder innocents (as well as commit adultery or worship idols).

I do not want to focus on the hateful ideology that led to this senseless murder. I do not want to focus on whether guns are to blame or the person pulling the trigger.

I want to focus on the appropriate reaction to this terrible event.

Wherever and whenever a tragedy would strike (especially ‘man-made’ tragedies) our Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, may his memory be a blessing, would emphasize the response and it makes perfect sense. After all, we all know that it is wiser to light a light rather than merely curse the darkness.

So how do we light a light after this horrific event?

The answer is of course by doubling and redoubling our efforts to bring the light and love of Torah into the world! In a way it is counter-intuitive. Most people are very hurt and very angry by these events, and rightfully so. Responding with love is therefore a challenge, but it is a challenge that must be met. G-d didn’t create us to live a comfortable, easy existence. No indeed. He created us to transform a lowly, crass physical world, a world where darkness often seems to dominate, into a world of G-dliness.

This is and is meant to be a struggle.

Torah and Mitzvot are an expression of G-d’s love for His choicest creation; humankind. Thinking Torah, speaking Torah, and especially living Torah is the way that He has asked us to dispel the darkness. In this model there is no room for fear, complacency, or compromise. Like any front-line soldier we have our marching orders – now is the time to march forward proudly waving our banner!

Do we want to end the suffering brought about by these horrific events and evil ideology? This is not a battle that we can outsource to others for if we do we are part of the problem. As Jews we are commanded to be part of the solution.

On a practical level we must endeavor to add in three areas of our lives; our Torah learning, our acts of kindness (Mitzvah observance), and in the service of the heart, our prayers to the Almighty.

What side are you on?

JLI Course Continues - Last Class

StrengthStruggle_chabad_banner_480x235.jpg

Chabad at La Costa in conjunction with the Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) will presentStrength and Struggle: Lessons in Character from the Stories of Our Prophets, the institute’s new six-session for Spring 2016.

Rabbi and Rebbetzin Eilfort will conduct the six course sessions.

Strength and Struggle: Lessons in Character from the Stories of Our Prophets, a brand-new six-session course by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute, explores six intriguing, disturbing, and controversial biblical personalities and events from the times of the Prophets: Jephthah’s daughter, the rise and fall of King Saul, Ruth’s migration to Israel, King David and Bathsheba, the wonders of Elisha, and Jonah and the fish.

Through textual analysis and by exploring the ideas offered by classic biblical commentaries, this course offers a snapshot of the first Jewish commonwealth, an era that lasted nearly one thousand years, and probes the aforementioned personalities within their broad historical and sociological contexts, allowing us to reach deep into the essence of these figures and events.

At first it may seem that these stories are full of questions. We will discover, however, that they are full of timeless answers to our innermost questions about life.

Like all JLI programs, Strength and Struggle is designed to appeal to people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship.

Interested students may call 760-943-8891or visit www.myJLI.com for registration and other course-related information.
