Message from the Rabbi

Three men, an Italian, a Frenchman, and a Jew,were condemned to be executed. Their captors told them that they had the right to a final meal before the execution.

"Give me some good French wine and French bread," the Frenchman requested. After he had savored his last crumb and last sip of wine, they executed him.

Next was the Italian's turn. "Give me a big plate of pasta," he said.They brought it to him, he ate it, and then they executed him.

Now it was the Jew's turn. "I want a big bowl of strawberries," he said.

"Strawberries!” his captors exclaimed, “They aren't even in season!"

"No? So I'll wait..."

Jokes aside, throughout our long history, the Jewish people have consistently proven to be a truly optimistic and resilient nation. It’s our positive attitude that has helped us survive against all odds, and longer than any other nation. This attitude is no coincidence or even genetic disposition;it was taught to us by G‑d himself in this week’s Torah portion.

When Moshe is instructed to return to Egypt and free the Jews,he complains, “Ever since I have come to Pharaoh, things have only gotten only worse!” G‑d responds with the secret of Jewish positive thinking, which can be founding the two ancient Hebrew words “Ani Hashem “– “I am G‑d”. With this very brief response, G‑d was not pulling rank on Moshe or being condescending. He was basically saying, “Listen Moshe, you may be the greatest of prophets, the wisest of all men, and able to ask good questions, but at the end of the day, I am Hashem. Trust me on this one. Yes, I understand that from your mortal perspective it appears to be getting worse, but from my Divine vantage point I can see the seeds of redemption and freedom. If you just place your trust in me, and ignore the misleading facts on the ground, everything will work out okay.”

Before his passing, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory, boldly proclaimed that the final and lasting redemption for all of mankind was about to happen. A grand optimistic idea,indeed! But what about the facts on the ground? What about Iran and their nuclear ambitions? What about Al Qaeda and ISIS? What about all the many tragedies around the world? What about all the natural disasters, civil strife and economic hardships? Sounds pretty bleak to me.

Yet the clear and unequivocal answer is the same one given to Moshe, thousands of years ago: Put a little faith in G‑d and the facts on the ground don’t matter. The same G‑d who thousands of years ago in Egypt transformed the bleakest of realities into a most dazzling turnaround of events, can do exactly the same for us, provided, of course, that we maintain that extra dose of Jewish optimism and faith taught to us by the Creator himself!

Haftarah Thought By: Gabbai Harold Reisman Shabbat Rosh Chodesh Isaiah 66: 1-24 A Haftarah often relates to the Parshah but this Haftarah reaches well beyond the Torah portion. Early chapters of Isaiah exhibit severe criticism centered upon insincere worship. In this later prophecy, renewal and hope are the central themes. We can expand on the visible renewal of the moon and extend renewal to every individual! The waxing and waning of the moon is related to the history of the Jews. We should respond with moral rejuvenation as the moon's light goes from almost invisible to complete brightness. Isaiah is the Navi of consolation. While he begins with harsh criticism, he ends with a positive prediction of national renewal. There will be glory in a post-teshuvah Am Yisroel if only we understand the message and act on it. The success is a direct result of the increase in our core group of committed participants. A daily Minyan is a very important service provided by a shul to its local community. Praying with a Minyan is considered a great Mitzvah as it helps our prayers effectiveness (ask the Rabbi for a more complete explanation). It also allows those who need to say Kaddish to do so properly. We are facing a challenge, as in the coming weeks a couple of our regulars will be out of town (going to Yeshiva programs). We need a couple of more people to step forward and fill this gap to make sure we do not lose momentum. Can you make a commitment to our daily Minyan? Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed. Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family. We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Cell Phones & Chatting During Services Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation. Shul Etiquette Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family. At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul. It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like. Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services. We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Message from the Rabbi

The gabbai (warden) of a local synagogue approached one of the worshipers before services and offered, “I’d like to honor you with an aliyah. What is your full Hebrew name?"

"Esther ben Moshe"

"No, I need your name," explained the gabbai.

The man repeated,"It's Esther ben Moshe."

"How can that be?" asked the Gabbai.

"I've been having financial problems, so everything is now in my wife's name!"

The second book of the Torah is called "Shemot"—the Book of Names. The simple reason for this unusual name is that this book contains the word"names" in its opening line: "Now these are the names of the children of Israel..."(Exodus 1:1).

Now this is quite intriguing. Why name an entire book after the seemingly coincidental use of a word in its opening line? Wouldn't it be more logical to name it after its storyline and theme, “the Book of Exodus,” as it is referred to in most English bibles?

But here lies an important lesson about the Jewish approach to the individual members of a community. The second book of the Torah introduces us to the very first Jewish community—the new nation of Israel. This book's narrative tells how in a very short period of time the relatively small family of Jacob successfully proliferated into a quantitatively fruitful nation. Yet, despite this amazing numeric growth, the Torah reminds us not to forget that each individual person has a name and must be recognized and respected. Maturing into a large nation should not translate into, G‑d forbid, neglecting the needs of the individual,or treating him or her like a number or statistic.

We must apply this approach to our own lives by treating our children as the unique people they are. They each have talents that are uniquely theirs, and it’s our job to help them discover those strengths and how they can use them in a positive, G‑dly way.

Likewise,when dealing with the greater community, we must appreciate the diversity that makes up our community and find creative ways to utilize and enlist the diverse talents of each individual member. No one is useless; everyone has a purpose.It’s up to us to help them find it.

The Jews began the first national exile. This is only the first of other future exiles. The haftarah begins with great promise. But tragedy and exile will recur; however, Jews must remember they are offspring of Avraham, Yitzhak and Yaakov. Privations of exile will ultimately lead to atonement. The prophet details "...commandment by commandment; line by line..." - just as a young child learns - so will the people of Israel learn to hallow their Redeemer and ultimately "...sanctify the Holy One of Jacob..." Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Three Jewish mothers sitting on a park bench in Miami Beach are discussing (what else?) how much their sons love them.

Sadie says, "You know the Chagall painting hanging in my living room? My son, Arnold, bought that for me for my 75th birthday. What a good boy he is; see how much he loves his mother!"

"You call that love?"Minnie chimed in. "You know the Cadillac I just got for Mother's Day?That's from my son Bernie. What a doll."

"That's nothing," exclaims Shirley. "You know my son Stanley? He sees a psychoanalyst on Park Avenue, five sessions a week. And what does he talk about? Me!"

The most famous parental blessing is found in this week’s Torah portion: “…May G‑d bless you to be like Ephraim and Menashe.” Jacob proclaims that this shall be the paradigm of blessing for all future generations—“With your names (his grandchildren Ephraim and Menashe) shall all of Israel be blessed.”

One cannot help but wonder why Jacob chose to connect the most famous Jewish blessing with the names of his grandchildren, rather than his children, the twelve tribes of Israel.

But Jacob, the great prophet and patriarch of the Jewish people,was able to foresee all the future generations including ours. He envisioned a challenging time like ours when role models would be scarce and the forces of assimilation and secularism would run rampant.

Addressing the challenge of our generation, Jacob encourages parents to bless their children: “May G‑d bless you to be like Ephraim and Menashe.” You must bless them to be like my own grandchildren, Ephraim and Menashe, who, unlike their parents and grand parents before them, grew up in the land of Egypt, exposed to a very foreign culture. Despite this and despite never seeing their Jewish family until much later in life, they still managed to grow up faithful to their family’s values and lifestyle!

Because of the similarities between his grandchildren and the children of our generation, Jacob encourages the parents of our generation to bless their children to follow the example of Ephraim and Menashe specifically,rather than any of the other famous biblical heroes. Over 3,000 years ago,Grandpa Jacob was preparing to comfort our generation with the knowledge that despite our colossal challenges, our children can still be just like Ephraim and Menashe who successfully continued their tradition in Egypt and against all odds.

Message from the Rabbi

After the synagogue service a little boy told the new rabbi:
"When I grow up and make it rich, I'm going to give you some money."
"Well, thank you," the new rabbi replied, "but why?"
"Because my daddy says you're one of the poorest speakers we've ever had."

After being betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, and thrown into jail, Joseph miraculously becomes the viceroy of Egypt. He then meets up with his brothers and instead of taking revenge, he forgives them. He even asks them to come down with their father Jacob and join him in Egypt.Jacob, who is under the impression that his son Joseph is dead, is initially skeptical about the positive turn of events. Only upon seeing the royal chariots that Joseph sends to him, is he convinced that his son is alive, and his spirit is revived (Genesis 45).

We need to understand, what was it about these royal chariots thatconvinced him that Joseph was alive? Furthermore, assuming that the chariotsconvinced him that Joseph was physically alive, what assurance did he have thatJoseph, now the viceroy of Egypt was spiritually alive and that he did notforget his roots and heritage? Would the great patriarch Jacob have beensatisfied with having his son, the apple of his eye, merely physically alivebut lost to assimilation?

According to the famous commentary Rashi, there was much more tothis story than meets the eyes. It was not the royal chariots themselves thatimpressed Jacob, but rather an encoded message about his spiritual wellbeingthat was being sent by the brilliant Joseph to his father to comfort him!

You see, according to tradition the very last Torah lesson thatJacob lovingly taught his son Joseph just before the abduction was the sectionabout a mystery murder and its associated ritual known as the “egla arufa”(Deuteronomy 21). The Hebrew word for chariot - “agalah” is almost identical to the word“egla”. According to Rashi, whenJoseph sent his father chariots, he was hinting to Jacob of their mutualsecret—the last piece of Torah they studied together. Only the real Josephwould have known this.

This not only proved to Jacob that Joseph was physically alive butit also proved that he was spiritually alive! Here was Joseph crypticallysaying to his father through the “chariots” that even after all these yearsaway from his father’s home and influence, he was still reviewing the lastTorah lesson they studied together before their tragic separation. Yes, he mayhave become the powerful viceroy of Egypt and exposed to a foreign culture andlifestyle, but he still was very much spiritually alive, faithful to hisfather’s lessons and traditions.

This is a priceless lesson to our generation too. Only throughspending quality time with our children, studying with them at a young age,like Jacob did with Joseph, can we be assured that they will become the kind ofleaders that like Joseph will have a positive impact on the world!

On it we commemorate the siege of Jerusalem that ultimately led to the destruction of the 1^st Holy Temple by the Babylonians some two and a half years after the siege began. The destruction of the Holy Temple is a catastrophe that affects our people until today, as we are yet in exile. We are taught by our Sages that Fast Days are actually opportunities to repent, in that the fasting is meant to help realize how very dependent we are upon the Almighty for every aspect of our lives. When we are cognizant of this reality we take our spiritual responsibilities and opportunities much more seriously. The fast begins at day break, 5:30am, and concludes at night fall, 5:27pm. Fasting means we neither eat nor drink for the duration of the day. We wish you an easy but meaningful fast! Haftarah Thought By: Gabbai Harold Reisman PARSHAT VAYIGASH Ezekiel 37:15-28 The sedra describes the reunification of the 12 sons of Yaakov. The event occurred after a separation of 22 years. The haftarah prophesies that at the End of Days there will occur a similar reconciliation of factions among the Jewish people. The prophet predicts that the antagonistic monarchies of Yehudah and Ephraim will unite. They are going to the Holy Land in order to visit the Rebbetzin’s father, other family members, and holy sites. The Eilforts plan on visiting the Western Wall despite (or perhaps because of) the latest nonsensical UN Resolution, which ridiculously calls the Western Wall illegally occupied ‘Palestinian’ Land. Southern- Style Friday Night Dinner & Community Board Games This month’s Family Friday Night Dinner and Game Night will take place on Friday, January 27^th, which is also Rosh Chodesh Shevat. We will have a beautiful Friday Night Dinner together featuring the most scrumptious Southern-Style menu featuring Fried Chicken with all the fixings. Candle lighting is at 4:59pm, followed by a word of Torah by the Rabbi and a family-friendly Friday night service. Dinner will be served at 6pm. Following dinner we will have board games available to play together. The cost to attend is $18 per adult and $10 per child – not to exceed $54 per family. Minyan Shaping Up We are most proud to announce that our morning Minyan is looking good! In fact, we got a Minyan every day this week. The success is a direct result of the increase in our core group of committed participants. A daily Minyan is a very important service provided by a shul to its local community. Praying with a Minyan is considered a great Mitzvah as it helps our prayers effectiveness (ask the Rabbi for a more complete explanation). It also allows those who need to say Kaddish to do so properly. We are facing a challenge, as in the coming weeks a couple of our regulars will be out of town (going to Yeshiva programs). We need a couple of more people to step forward and fill this gap to make sure we do not lose momentum. Can you make a commitment to our daily Minyan? Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed. Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family. We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is only $360 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Cell Phones & Chatting During Services Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation. Shul Etiquette Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family. At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul. It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like. Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services. We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30).
