We are being extremely careful and are asking the following to anyone contemplating coming:

1. If you have ANY symptoms of Covid please do not come.
2. If you have been around anyone who has Covid please do not come.
3. If your doctor told you to be especially careful please do not come.
4. If you are concerned/afraid please do not come.
5. If you do come please keep your mask (properly) on at all times.
6. Please maintain social distancing at all times.
7. Please wash and sanitize your hands regularly.

This is a very difficult situation. We ask for your support and understanding as we do our absolute best in providing a vibrant spiritual home that is SAFE for our community. This means that even if you are not concerned about Covid please be thoughtful about those who are concerned. This means even if you are extremely concerned about Covid do not be judgmental of those who feel they must attend shul to ensure we have a minyan.

We simply MUST FIND A WAY to coexist and remain a close and loving community.  

SPECIAL SHABBOS! – 10 Commandments to be Read

This Shabbos is the Torah portion of Yisro, which contains the 10 Commandments. Yes, THE 10 Commandments! The 10 Commandments have impacted human existence more than anything else in history. They have uplifted our lives and given all of us divine meaning in a mundane world. 
It is a great Mitzvah for everyone who is able to attend the synagogue and listen to the same reading as will be done in synagogues around the world and as has been done since the Torah was given. We demonstrate by so doing that we are part of the unbroken chain, which connects us with the Jews who left Egypt and stood at the foot of Sinai. 
Torah reading will take place at about 11am on Saturday. We hope to see you here. 

Eat. Work. Sleep. Repeat.

Living with the Times -  Yitro - Jethro

Hero or Zero?

This week’s portion is titled, “Yitro” and is named after the father-in-law of Moshe (Moses), our teacher. At the outset of our portion we learn that Yitro joined up with the Jewish people following their successful war against the nation of Amalek, which was preceded by the destruction of the Egyptian army after they followed the Jewish people into the midst of the split Sea of Reeds. 

It did not take Yitro long to make his presence felt amongst the people. He witnessed Moshe judging the people “from morning till night.” Every case was brought to Moshe for adjudication. Yitro wisely counseled Moses to establish a court system so that the people and Moshe himself would not become worn out by this unsustainable system. Moshe heeded his father in law and everything settled down and worked well. 

This portion is arguably the single most important portion in the Torah as it includes the 10 Commandments. 

We know that the name of a portion is indicative of its content. Whereas we can clearly see the connection of the name to the first part of the portion we can fairly ask what is the connection to the latter part; the part that includes the 10 Commandments? 

The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous memory, gives us a fascinating insight based upon an explanation of the Zohar (the foundational Kabbalistic text written by Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai). 

The story of Yitro advising Moshe about establishing an appropriate legal apparatus can be understood in a much deeper way than the simple explanation that Yitro saw a need so he advised how to properly fulfill that need. The beginning of our portion states that Yitro testified that he came to join the Jewish people because he heard about all that G-d had done for the Children of Israel. Which episodes specifically inspired Yitro to join the Jews? The classic commentary Rashi explains those mentioned above, the splitting of the sea and the subsequent destruction of the Egyptians, and the attack and defeat of Amalek. 

We know that there were many miracles that had occurred between the time Moses had last seen Yitro and Yitro deciding to join the people of Israel. Why were those two incidents so important? 

Our Sages explain that each of those incidences demonstrate G-d’s attribute of justice, the attribute that resonated most profoundly with Yitro. The Egyptians had been cruel taskmasters towards their Jewish slaves and had oppressed them in many ways. However, the fact that they cast the Jewish babies into the water stood out as the most heinous and barbaric treatment of them all. What could be worse than terminating an innocent baby? Yitro’s saw the Egyptian army’s downfall in the crashing waves of the Sea of Reeds as a form of poetic just, or in the Hebrew, “Middah kinegged middah,” which means measure for measure. 

The infamous Amalakites attacked the most vulnerable of the Jewish people, the old and infirm and other stragglers. The attack came after the Jews expressed doubt in G-d and His motives. This doubt resonated in the Amalakites who represent indifference and coldness towards G-dliness. It is precisely indifference that leads one to doubt G-d, His providence and power. When the Jews experienced doubt in G-d, they became vulnerable to attack. Along came Amalek to execute the attack. The Israelites drove them off handing them a horrendous defeat. And how did they accomplish this?

We learned last week that Moses oversaw the battle and when he raised his hands the Jewish people would vanquish Amalek. Raising his hands heavenward demonstrated to the Jewish warriors that they must look heavenward for their salvation, they must strengthen their trust in G-d. When they did, they won. Amalek was defeated by the very trait that they sought to undermine and exploit. Measure for measure. 

Specifically these stories appealed strongly to Yitro’s sense of justice. Interestingly we learn about Yitro that he had sampled every known form of idol worship in his day before finally reuniting with Moses. What compelled Yitro to leave idolatry and embrace ethical monotheism as embodied in Judaism? Justice is what attracted Yitro. Therefore, when he came to the Israelite camp and he saw a system that was lacking due to a paucity of judges, Yitro spoke up. Moshe, being the humble servant of the Almighty recognized the truth in Yitro’s critique and followed his advice. 

We can now also understand why the portion containing the 10 Commandments should be called Parshat Yitro – the portion of Yitro. The 10 Commandments are the definition of justice. Finally, Yitro found a system that addressed all of the inequities that exist. He was strongly attracted to the system that created and defined true justice for humanity. He found his path going forward! 

May we all embrace the truism that our Law, the Holy Torah, is the path of justice for all humankind and is the superior way for every one of us to connect with the Almighty!

Haftarah of Parshat Beshalach
Isaiah 6:1–13.
This week's haftorah discusses Isaiah’s vision of the Heavenly Chariot (the merkavah), a revelation that was experienced by all the Israelites when G d spoke the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai—an event recounted in this week’s Torah reading.
Isaiah perceives G d sitting on a throne surrounded by angels. Isaiah vividly describes the angels and their behavior (in anthropomorphic terms). During the course of this vision, Isaiah volunteers to be G d’s emissary to transmit His message to the Israelites. He is immediately given a depressing prophecy regarding the exile the nation will suffer as punishment for their many sins—and the Land of Israel will be left empty and desolate, though there will be left a “trunk” of the Jewish people that eventually will regrow.

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today". Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School Theme this Week: King Solomon

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Tzedakah news – 

Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.

These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.

Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.

Special Anniversary Celebration THIS Shabbos

This Shabbos is the 32nd anniversary of our first Shabbos services in La Costa! We met in the living room of Elias and Rachel Perez. Rabbi Elia was a newborn infant. We have, Baruch Hashem, come a long way since then!
This week we will have a special Kiddush sponsored by Chabad at La Costa to commemorate this very special anniversary. 

Special Holocaust Torah to be Used

Many may not be aware that our community has an amazing treasure. Thanks to the generosity of Ed Richard, may he live and be well, we have a Torah that miraculously survived the Holocaust, as it was buried underground, in Carlsbad, Czechoslovakia. An expert scribe estimates the age of our Torah to be centuries old. It has beautiful script with enhancements based upon the teachings of the Kabbalah specifically in this week’s portion, in the Song of Moses. We only use this Torah on very special occasions, particularly this portion. 
We are inviting everyone who would like to bask in the holiness of our sanctuary, particularly when this Torah is being used, to join us. Torah reading is at about 11am. It is a great Mitzvah to listen to this portion.

Living with the Times -  Beshalach

Parshat Beshalach – Exodus 13:17 – 17:16

The Torah portion of Beshalach begins by picking up the narrative of the Exodus from immediately following Pharaoh’s sending forth the nascent people of Israel into the wilderness. The Jews had witnessed unprecedented miracles of G-d in the form of the 10 Plagues, during which they saw the mighty Egyptian Empire brought to its collective knees.

The Exodus represented an astounding triumph of the Children of Israel over their oppressors. Furthermore it is considered the defining moment in the birth of a newly chosen nation. Intriguingly the victorious people were not led directly towards the Promised Land. Instead, a circuitous route was chosen for as G-d Himself testifies, “Perhaps the people will reconsider when they see a war, and will return to Egypt,” if they were to encounter the warlike Philistines.

One must wonder, “Where is the people’s faith?” After all, they had just witnessed the destruction of Egypt, how could they be worried about the Philistines who were not nearly as powerful?

Perhaps we may answer that although the people indeed had seen the wonders and miracles of G-d, and they obviously did have an enhanced faith in the Almighty, this faith had still not penetrated to the core of their consciences. For transitory faith to become permanent faith an intense process of meditation must occur. The people of Israel simply did not have the time or wherewithal to accomplish this fete in such a short time.

Further in the portion we find the miraculous splitting of the Red Sea, the safe passage of the Israelites, and the final destruction of the Egyptian Army. Subsequent to these events the famed Song of Moses was joyously sung by the people.

Immediately following the miracles of the Sea the Jews are led to further travels. As the Jews continue they begin to complain that they have no meat and that the supply of Matzah they had brought with them had dwindled. Yet another miracle of G-d occurs when a multitude of quail came so that they could satiate their hunger. An even greater miracle also occurred when the Manna – the heavenly bread – descended upon the camp.

Further still in the portion they came to a place called Rephidim where there was no water. Again the people showed a lack of faith by accusing G-d and Moses of wanting to destroy them (not a very nice way to request water). Moses was commanded to strike a rock and water ushered forth for the people to quench their thirst.

Finally the portion concluded with the nefarious Amalekites attacking the Jewish people from behind. The Jewish people quickly vanquished this treacherous foe and are commanded for all future generations to utterly destroy the evil nation of Amalek. Unfortunately the Jewish people never did this and time after time in our history we have suffered terribly at the hands of Amalek.

Haftarah of Parshat Beshalach

Judges 4:4-5:31.

This week's haftorah describes the fall of the Canaanite general Sisera and his armies, who were swept away by the Kishon River, and Deborah's ensuing song of thanks. This parallels this week's Torah portion which discusses the drowning of the Egyptian forces in the Red Sea and and the subsequent songs led by Moses and Miriam.

Deborah the Prophetess was the leader and judge of the Israelites at a difficult time; the Israelites were being persecuted by King Jabin of Canaan and his general Sisera. Deborah summoned Barak son of Abinoam and transmitted to him G‑d's instruction: "Go and gather your men toward Mount Tabor, and take with you ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali and Zebulun. And I shall draw to you, to the brook Kishon, Sisera, the chieftain of Jabin's army, with his chariots and his multitude; and I will give him into your hand." At Barak's request, Deborah accompanied him, and together they led the offensive.

Sisera was informed of the Israelites' mobilization and he gathered his forces and proceeded towards the Kishon River. Barak's army below and the heavens above waged battle against the Canaanites and utterly destroyed them. The river washed them all away; not one of the enemy survived.

The defeated general fled on foot and arrived at the tent of Jael, wife of Heber the Kenite. She invited him in and offered to hide him. When he fell asleep, Jael took a tent-peg and knocked it through Sisera's temple.

The next chapter of the haftorah is the Song of Deborah, which describes the miraculous victory and thanks the One Above for His assistance.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School Theme this Week: King Solomon

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Tzedakah news – 

Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.

These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.

Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.
