This Shabbos is the Yarzeit, the anniversary of passing, of David Eilfort, Dovid ben Zev, Rabbi Eilfort’s father. David Eilfort was a longtime member of our community who was a friend to all. His quiet presence and refined nature inspired many people, as well as his deep desire to help whoever needed it. In his memory we are asking everyone who can to study some extra Torah and do an extra Mitzvah.
Services are TONIGHT at 5:45pm, tomorrow at 10am, and tomorrow following the Kiddush. Rabbi Eilfort will be reciting the Kaddish in David’s memory and is hoping that many will join him in honoring his father’s blessed memory.

The Foundation Project - Donations

We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. We will not be delivering it if no request was made. Often times we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!

Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Living with the Times -  Varshat Vayeira – And He Appeared

Effective Prayer 101

In this week’s portion the Torah continues the narrative of our righteous Patriarch, Avraham. When we study his devotion to G-d we are truly awestruck by his profound connection and his willingness to do ‘whatever it took’ to fulfill the desires of the Master of the Universe. Avraham became known to all subsequent generations because of the enormous tests that he successfully navigated. Put into modern American terms, “Avraham batted 1,000.”

What I want to focus upon this week is not Avraham’s success, but instead upon his failure, for from his failure we can learn even more about our beloved father, the first person identified as a Hebrew, and we can learn about tools available to us.

In our portion we find Avraham recovering from his Bris Milah – his ritual circumcision. Our Talmudic sources tell us that not only did G-d send messengers (aka angels) to check on Avraham, but that the Almighty Himself fulfilled the Mitzvah of Bikur Cholim – visiting the sick. In fact three angels visited Avraham, one to send him healing, one to give him the good news that Sarah would finally be blessed with a child in a year’s time, and another was coming to destroy the evil cities of Sodom and Gemorah and other cities nearby.

As the angels departed to save Avraham’s nephew, Lot, who dwelled near the gates of Sodom, G-d communicated to Avraham His plan to destroy Sodom, Gemorah, and the three other cities that were also steeped in evil and in proximity to the first two. When Avraham learned of the impending calamity he immediately tried to intercede. This is one of the most famous ‘scenes’ in the Torah – where Avraham tries to strike a bargain with G-d. ‘If there are 50 righteous people will You save the cities so as not to destroy the righteous with the wicked?’ G-d replied in the affirmative, but since the plan to destroy was not halted Avraham realized there were not 50 righteous, and the bargaining went on from there until the point where he realized there were not even 10 righteous found in any of the cities.

The angels headed to Sodom to save Lot and his family. Lot, was a complex individual sometimes displaying greatness and sometimes displaying the opposite. He chose to live near Sodom, as he was fascinated by the evil of the place. But he also imperiled his own life by inviting the angels into his house as guests. Lot insisted his wife treat the guests nicely but then allowed himself to get drunk, not once, but twice, leading to an incestuous relationship with his two daughters.

When the angels told Lot to flee the city for it was about to be destroyed (Lot was being saved by virtue of Avraham) he was told to return to Avraham. Lot asked for a change in plans being that he knew that his shortcomings would be in stark relief to Avraham’s righteousness. He therefore asked to go to Tzo’ar, which, in Lot’s words, was a young city that therefore did not have too many sins as yet. The Creator acquiesced to this request and that is where Lot went.

This is amazing! Originally Tzo’ar was destined to be destroyed. Even Avraham could not change the decree against it, and yet Lot was able to save the city through his request to the Almighty. Why was Lot able to save the city while the thoroughly righteous Avraham was not?

A couple of answers are offered by modern commentaries. One says that since Lot was praying for his own life his prayers were even more intense – in this case – than Avraham’s. The sheer intensity of the prayers was enough to change G-d’s decree against the city. Another answer is that Lot used a different approach than Avraham. Avraham appealed to G-d’s sense of justice (Will You destroy the righteous with the wicked?), while Lot appealed to G-d’s mercy.

In this particular case Lot was successful in saving the city while Avraham was not. This shows that intense prayer, even when offered by someone with profound deficiencies, has advantages over other types of prayer. Avraham’s prayer was selfless while Lot’s was selfish, yet in this case, Lot’s prevailed. We also see the power of appealing to G-d’s mercy. We see that our Creator is approachable – even to flawed individuals - because He is merciful and He responds to intense sincerity, even when the motives are not pure.

This is an important for a generation like ours, which is peopled by some who may not be perfect, but can truly appeal with intensity to G-d’s incredible mercy!

Haftarah of Shabbat Parshat VaYeira

Kings II 4:1-37.

In this week's Torah reading, G‑d promises a child to Abraham and Sarah, despite childless Sarah's advanced age. This week's haftorah describes a similar incident that occurred many years later — the prophet Elisha assuring an elderly childless woman that she will bear a child.

The haftorah discusses two miracles performed by the prophet Elisha. The first miracle involved a widow who was heavily in debt, and her creditors were threatening to take her two sons as slaves to satisfy the debt. When the prophet asked her what she had in her home, the widow responded that she had nothing but a vial of oil. Elisha told her to gather as many empty containers as possible — borrowing from neighbors and friends as well. She should then pour oil from her vial into the empty containers. She did as commanded, and miraculously the oil continued to flow until the last empty jug was filled. The woman sold the oil for a handsome profit, and had enough money to repay her debts and live comfortably.

The second miracle: Elisha would often pass by the city of Shunam, where he would dine and rest at the home of a certain hospitable couple. This couple even made a special addition to their home, a guest room designated for Elisha's use. When the prophet learned that the couple was childless, he blessed the woman that she should give birth to a child in exactly one year's time. And indeed, one year later a son was born to the aged couple.

A few years later the son complained of a headache and died shortly thereafter. The Shunamit woman laid the lifeless body on the bed in Elisha's designated room, and quickly summoned the prophet. Elisha hurried to the woman's home and miraculously brought the boy back to life.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Foundations

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.  Our students want to be here!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Tzedakah news – 

Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.

These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.

Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Soup and Challah

We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. We will not be delivering it if no request was made. Often times we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!

Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. Living with the Times -  Parshat Lech Lechah – Go for You
Reading Between the Lines

We started reading the Torah for the new cycle on Simchat Torah. The first portion, Genesis had some sobering sections, including the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden among others. Last week we read Noah, that likewise had a difficult message for all of us, as we recounted the destruction of humanity and the animal kingdom, save for Noah and his family in the Ark. Finally, we come to our portion, Lech Lecha, a portion that concerns itself with the Father and Mother of the Jewish people, Abraham and Sarah. The Rebbe comments that this makes this portion particularly joyful!

The narrative begins when G-d communicates with Avraham telling him to leave his father’s house and go to what would ultimately be the Promised Land. Demonstrating faith and alacrity Avraham and Sarah (the original Jewish power couple) pack up and move. Typically, a move of this nature would carry a heavy price in that it would negatively impact one’s safety and security (physical and financial), as well as one’s ability to build a family. G-d promised the couple that they will gain by making this move. That is why the portion begins, “Go for you,” meaning for your benefit. 

Throughout the portion we see Abraham and Sarah undergo tests, all of which they overcame. We see, for the very first time, that Abraham is identified as an Ivri, a Hebrew, which Rashi explains as meaning he came from the other side of the river meaning he was from a different place and that he had a different approach. 

What was different about Avraham and Sarah?

The commentaries explain that whereas there had certainly been righteous people before their time, our Father and Mother, were activists. They proactively reached out to others to influence them working to bring them to believe and serve the One, true G-d. They were not merely interested in their own spiritual wellbeing. They understood their role differently than other righteous individuals. They understood that G-d gives us feet to be able to move around and inspire those we come in contact with. G-d gives us a mouth, not only to fill with food, but to express G-dly ideas and to articulate the Truth regarding this world and its purpose. 

This was revolutionary! Two people, through their devotion and diligence, literally changed the world demonstrating an individual’s ability to make lasting change that would positively impact the entire human race. 

We see all of the above when we read the Torah. However, there is a lot we can learn from what is not written as well. We need to read between the lines. 

Our portion begins when Avraham and Sarah were already older people. The Torah does not discuss their childhood or young adulthood at all. We are presented with a mature couple who are completely dedicated to the One, true G-d as a fait accompli. Midrashim do talk about their earlier lives, but not the written Torah. 

We therefore will naturally ask, “How did Avraham and Sarah reach these spiritual heights?” There was no revealed divine intervention. The conclusion we must arrive at is that they came to their guiding principles through using their own devices. Their own observations and intellect led them to the point where they became vessels worthy to receive communications from the Creator. 

Avraham and Sarah are our parents. Just like our own parents leave us a legacy this is true when we speak of our Jewish Patriarchs and Matriarchs. We have been endowed with the ability to make ourselves into vessels worthy of a revealed connection with G-d! In addition, we have been bequeathed the ability to influence others and inspire them to join us in the protective shadow of G-d’s Presence. Indeed, we can change the world!

Haftarah of Shabbat Parshat Lech Lecha
Isaiah 40:27-41:16.
The haftorah for this week discusses Abraham's journey to the land of Canaan at G d's behest, and touches upon Abraham's miraculous battle against the four kings, both of which are described in this week's Torah reading.
The prophet Isaiah addresses Israel's complaint: ""My way [of serving G d] has been ignored by the Lord, and from my G d, my judgment passes [unrewarded]."
Isaiah reminds Israel of the Creator's greatness. The time will come when "He will give the tired strength, and to him who has no strength, He will increase strength. Youths shall become tired and weary, and young men shall stumble, but those who put their hope in the Lord shall renew [their] vigor, they shall raise wings as eagles; they shall run and not weary, they shall walk and not tire." Nevertheless, "there is no comprehension of His wisdom," and as such, at times we cannot understand why He chooses to delay the reward of the righteous.
The haftorah then turns its attention to the idolatrous nations of the world. Isaiah reminds them of Abraham's greatness, how after arriving in Canaan he pursued and defeated four mighty kings. "The islands saw and feared; the ends of the earth quaked." Nevertheless, the nations who witnesses these miracles did not abandon their ways. "The [idol] craftsman strengthened the smith, the one who smooths [the idol] with the hammer strengthened the one who wields the sledge hammer; the one who glues its coating says, "It is good," and he strengthened it with nails that it should not move..."
G d promises the Jewish nation to reward them for their loyalty to G d. "Do not fear for I am with you; be not discouraged for I am your G d. . . Behold all those incensed against you shall be ashamed and confounded; those who quarreled with you shall be as naught and be lost."

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Tzedakah news – 

Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.

These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.

Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Soup and Challah

We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. We will not be delivering it if no request was made. Often times we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!

Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). Living with the Times, Parshat Noach

When Times Are Tough, Be Like Noah

Are you anxious? Are you constantly plagued with thoughts of, “What’s going to be? How am I going to make enough money to cover my expenses this month? What will happen if my kids come home late from school and don’t tell me? Will I ever be stable enough to hold down a job? Will my friends like what I’m wearing tomorrow? What will people think when they see my messy house?”

And on, and on, and on.

It’s debilitating.

According to the ADAA (Anxiety and Depression Association of America), anxiety disorders affect 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, or 18.1% of the population.1 If you think about it, that’s an incredibly high number, if not a tad bit frightening.

So what should we do with all this anxiety? Of course—of course!—if the matter has reached clinical levels (and many times, even before that), a competent professional should be sought for guidance. Anxiety and depression are serious matters, and must be handled with extreme care and sensitivity.

As a baseline, overall positive approach that can certainly help anyone, a great Chassidic master penned a seminal essay over 200 years ago that offers a shining beacon of light for the over-anxious. It’s our luck that this essay is set in the storyline of our parshah.

The Waters Lift the Ark
We all know the story, one of the most dramatic and earth-changing of all time. The world has gone entirely off the rails, people are utterly corrupt, and after tolerating their shenanigans for far too long, G‑d decides He has had enough. He’s fed up with this base and perverted world, so He’s going to obliterate it with a giant flood.

Out of the entire world population, there’s really only one “good guy”—Noah (and his family). So G‑d instructs him to build a big boat, to pack it with a sampling of every animal under the sun, and use it as a rescue device to ride out the earth-cleansing flood.

The skies open and heavy rainwater pummels the ground for 40 consecutive days, destroying everything underneath. As the water rises, the watertight ark lifts off the ground, floating above with its surviving crew. The Torah describes this part of the story:

Now the Flood was forty days upon the earth, and the waters increased, and they lifted the ark, and it rose off the earth.2

A conventional reading presents us with a pretty straightforward description: the waters lifted the ark off the ground. But in the Chassidic rendering, these words reveal much more; they speak of how raging waters, a monsoon of inner anxiety can, in fact, be something that not only doesn’t cripple you, rather, it “lifts your ark off the earth.”

Ark = Words
Picture a flood, especially the one that wrecked planet Earth during Noah’s times. Endless rain whipped by ferocious winds that tear up the landscape. And it doesn’t relent. For over a month, it continuously hammers the terrain, always rising, offering no chance of reprieve.

Is this not the internal state of a mind and heart eaten up with anxiety? The raging thoughts, the feeling of never knowing reprieve, and constantly being haunted by another torrent of concern that will pummel you as soon as you even try to put your foot on the ground.

This is the “raging waters of Noah.” It’s the tormented, anxious mind.

So what do you do?

Do what Noah did. Build an ark.

In Hebrew, the word for ark is “teivah” (תבה). Another translation for this word is, well, “word.” And so, the Baal Shem Tov taught, when G‑d told Noah “enter the teivah,” an alternate translation of those words is, “enter the words”—the words of prayer.

Noah had a rescue plan. It was the precious, serene, and calming words of prayer that offered him solace, hope, and rescue.

You, too, can take advantage of the same rescue plan. You, too, can “enter into the words of prayer,” pour out your heart to G‑d, and thereby find comfort and, more importantly, rescue.

Uplifted Through Prayer
But the good news doesn’t stop there. Referring back to the description in the verse, the raging waters “lift the ark off the earth.” In other words, when escaping the internal monsoon of anxiety and finding refuge in the words of prayer, it’s not just “refuge” or “escape” that you’re netting; you’re netting far more. Your prayer, your dedication, your connection to the Divine is now enhanced and enriched by the experience.

You see, when a regular person prays to G‑d, someone who isn’t necessarily plagued with anxieties and concerns, their prayer is definitely worthy, but it lacks a certain intensity, a particular passion and yearning. After all, if life’s all hunky dory and it’s all a cakewalk, it’s nice that you’re praying, but you lack the life experience to give it that extra edge.

But when an anguished and tormented soul turns to her Creator in prayer, the angels stop, the world stops, and G‑d listens. It’s a passionate, soulful, heart-rending experience. It is sincere and deep, a cry from a place of darkness that bares the entire self.

It is such prayers that G‑d cherishes, and He’s listening out for them.

No one wishes to have “raging waters” in their life, but inevitably, they will come. They could very well crash over your mind and heart one day like a tsunami threatening to knock you entirely out of your senses.

If and when they do, remember the powerful refuge you possess. Remember that the words of prayer offer a potent lifeboat that can carry you above those waters.

And to sweeten the deal, you will then appreciate the fact that it is your prayers—not the rabbi’s, the rebbetzin’s, or even the cantor’s—that G‑d cherishes most.3

Haftarah of Shabbat Noach

Isaiah 54:1-10.

Forsaken Jerusalem is likened to a barren woman devoid of children. G‑d enjoins her to rejoice, for the time will soon come when the Jewish nation will return and proliferate, repopulating Israel's once desolate cities. The prophet assures the Jewish people that G‑d has not forsaken them. Although He has momentarily hid His countenance from them, He will gather them from their exiles with great mercy. The haftorah compares the final Redemption to the pact G‑d made with Noah in this week's Torah reading. Just as G‑d promised to never bring a flood over the entire earth, so too He will never again be angry at the Jewish people.

"For the mountains may move and the hills might collapse, but My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of My peace collapse."

This is a synopsis of the Haftorah that is read in Chabad synagogues. Other communities could possibly read more, less, or a different section of the Prophets altogether. Additionally, specific calendrical conditions can cause another Haftorah to be read instead of this one.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Foundations

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Tzedakah news – 

Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.

These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.

Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.
