Message from Chabad.org

Have you ever felt like you were the only one standing up for what’s right, even when everyone else seemed to look the other way? That’s exactly how Abraham, the first Jew, lived his life. The Torah calls him Avram Ha’ivri (literally “Abraham from the other side.”) Everyone else was on one side of the moral divide, and he was on the other, standing alone for truth, kindness, and belief in one G-d.

It couldn’t have been easy. He was mocked, threatened, even targeted for death. But he didn’t back down. He believed one person could change the world; and he was right. Four thousand years later, his courage still defines us. The Jewish people have always stood on “the other side,” sometimes painfully alone, but always with purpose.

These days, it can feel like we’re back in Abraham’s shoes: misunderstood, judged, and isolated. But that’s exactly when his message matters most. We don’t shrink, we shine. We stay proud, we stay kind, and we stay connected to each other.

That will bring about the ultimate change in the way we are viewed by the world, with the coming of Moshiach. May it be speedily in our times!

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

The policy of the shul is to allow multiple sponsors for every Kiddush unless it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or something similar (like a 50th wedding anniversary etc.).

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Haftorah for Shabbos Parsha Lech Licha

Isaiah 40:27-41:16.

The haftorah for this week discusses Abraham's journey to the land of Canaan at G‑d's behest, and touches upon Abraham's miraculous battle against the four kings, both of which are described in this week's Torah reading.

The prophet Isaiah addresses Israel's complaint: ""My way [of serving G‑d] has been ignored by the Lord, and from my G‑d, my judgment passes [unrewarded]."

Isaiah reminds Israel of the Creator's greatness. The time will come when "He will give the tired strength, and to him who has no strength, He will increase strength. Youths shall become tired and weary, and young men shall stumble, but those who put their hope in the Lord shall renew [their] vigor, they shall raise wings as eagles; they shall run and not weary, they shall walk and not tire." Nevertheless, "there is no comprehension of His wisdom," and as such, at times we cannot understand why He chooses to delay the reward of the righteous.

The  haftorah then turns its attention to the idolatrous nations of the world. Isaiah reminds them of Abraham's greatness, how after arriving in Canaan he pursued and defeated four mighty kings. "The islands saw and feared; the ends of the earth quaked." Nevertheless, the nations who witness these miracles did not abandon their ways. "The [idol] craftsman strengthened the smith, the one who smoothes [the idol] with the hammer strengthened the one who wields the sledge hammer; the one who glues its coating says, 'It is good,' and he strengthened it with nails that it should not move..."

G‑d promises the Jewish nation to reward them for their loyalty to G‑d. "Do not fear for I am with you; be not discouraged for I am your G‑d. . . Behold all those incensed against you shall be ashamed and confounded; those who quarreled with you shall be as naught and be lost."

Giving & Helping Opportunities

A Note About Charitable giving in 2025 from Rina

Give as much as you can for the maximum benefit on your tax return.

Why?

Because the law in 2026 is changing.

Your charitable donations will be limited to anything over 0.5% of your modified gross income (MAGI).

Say you contribute $10,000 in cash donations in 2025, and you are in the 22% income tax bracket.

You will be able to take the full amount of the contribution if you itemize, reducing your taxable income by 22%

In 2026 – if you make the same donation – Your deduction on your taxes would drop because you could only take $9,500 of it.

And if you donate under the limit imposed by your MAGI – then you can take 0 deductions.

You will be required to do some detailed tax planning when making your charitable contributions going forward. But until 2025 – take advantage of the full amount of your charitable deduction to help your favorite nonprofit.

Enhanced Security

We have a wonderful security guard who keeps a watch over us while we are in services.

Our number one priority is to ensure the safety and security of our shul family. While we have a robust security system in place, we have gone to the added expense of hiring a uniformed, armed guard, who is with us, watching over us, in addition to our internal security team. This added layer of security is expensive at a cost of $300 per week.

Please help us by donating to the security of our shul community by following this link: www.chabadatlacosta.com/donate. The cost is approximately $300 per week. All donations are tax-deductible.

How to Make a Donation (or Payment)

We would be nowhere without the generous support of our community. Please know that your support is profoundly appreciated!

There are many ways to donate besides checks and cash. Following, please find a list of the various other ‘platforms’ that are available for secure donations that go directly and entirely into the synagogue account (even though they say Nechama's name).

1. PayPal  [email protected]  or PayPal.me/Neilfort

2. Venmo @Nechama-Eilfort

3. Cashapp $nechamae

4. Zelle (Bank of America)   [email protected]

Volunteering

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FIFTH year! It was sponsored by Channah Hale and now carried on in her memory.

We are at the point that we need NEW volunteers to drive and deliver food packages around the area.

Please consider making this a part of your Friday routine. Volunteers pick up a few containers of soup and bags of challah at 3:00pm and delivering them to the door of the recipients. Volunteers also get soup and challah!

New Mitzvah Opportunity

Bikur Cholim of SD Volunteers Needed! Message me if you would like me to share the spreadsheet for visitation hours.

There are a number of patients at UCSD La Jolla that have come from Israel to receive transplants here. They need our help!

Bikur Cholim of S Diego is a community organization helping the sick with care packages, visitation, driving spouses to and from the hospital, etc.

If you are able to give a few hours of your time, it will make another person's day that much better!

To get involved, sign up at www.BikurCholimSD.com

The Foundation Project  - City Approved Plan

We are raising funds that will be used towards completing our basement. This project will include a TEEN LOUNGE, MULTIPURPOSE ROOM, a LIBRARY, OFFICES, STORAGE SPACE, BATHROOMS, and more. Call Rabbi to inquire about available dedications. The money we raise also goes towards scholarships for Hebrew School students, our Challah and Chicken Soup program, and all of our ongoing expenses.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Send a personal email to [email protected] to schedule an appointment today.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to   [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Membership

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!

We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!

Belonging to a Jewish Community is not only gratifying and fulfilling it is also extremely important, for within the community one finds a place to connect with G-d and one’s soul, a place of learning and spiritual enrichment, a great source of friends, a place to bestow one’s Jewish legacy upon his or her child/ren, and so much more. Check out   www.ChabadatLaCosta.com to learn more.

The beauty of OUR Jewish Community is that we offer so many different options that everyone is sure to find something enriching and meaningful. Below please find a partial list of some of our current offerings. If you have never come by before pick an item or two and try it out. If you have already tried an item or two find another one that sounds interesting and give it a whirl. “Connection” – that is the name of the game and that is precisely what you will find here!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

Message from Chabad.org

Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov, founder of the Chassidic movement, taught that the people we meet in life are like mirrors, they reflect back to us something about ourselves. When we get irritated or judgmental toward someone else, it’s G-d’s way of nudging us to look inward. Maybe the thing that bothers us in them is something we need to work on in ourselves.

We see this idea in the story of Noah. After the flood, Noah experienced a moment of weakness. His sons responded very differently. Cham mocked him and exposed his shame, while Shem and Yaphet quietly covered him, preserving his dignity. Their reaction wasn’t just about respect, it showed that they chose compassion over criticism.

That’s a powerful lesson for us today. We live in a world where judgment comes easily. Social media, politics, and even family conversations can quickly turn harsh. But before we roll our eyes or write someone off, we should pause and ask, “What is this moment teaching me about myself?”

Instead of criticizing, try getting curious. What’s behind this person’s view or behavior? What might they be afraid of or hoping for? We don’t have to agree, but we can listen, respect, and look for the shared humanity underneath.

Like Shem and Yaphet, we can choose to “cover” rather than expose; to protect dignity, build understanding, and bring more kindness into the world. That’s how real unity begins.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

An Important Note about Kiddushes –

The policy of the shul is to allow multiple sponsors for every Kiddush unless it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or something similar (like a 50th wedding anniversary etc.).

There is no such thing as an exclusive Kiddush sponsor.

This is our policy for numerous reasons, not least of which is the fact that Kiddush sponsorships help generate much-needed income for our community and encourages more people to participate.

We thank you for your support and understanding!

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Onward and Upward We Go!

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

The past month’s Holy Days have been this Rabbi’s Garden of Eden! The synagogue has been full to overflowing with eager congregants anxious to participate in the services. Most (if not all) listened attentively to the sermons, many of which were considerably longer than average. Even during the Yom Kippur appeal very few bolted for the doors. (That was a joke.)

We had community meals aplenty. Many were the questions asked and discussions engaged in. For those keeping count at home, try using a calculator. But where do we go from here? When one reaches the top of Mount Everest, what’s next? Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah cumulatively are the dizzying highest point of our year. Next comes the month of Cheshvan, also known as Mar (Bitter) Cheshvan. Why ‘bitter’? Because there are no holidays!

And that, my friends, is the answer.

When we celebrate our sacred days, our holy days, our holidays, we charge our spiritual batteries. Then, through the rest of the year, we draw upon those spiritual resources to power our way through the mundane times. We don’t just survive, however. We always seek growth. We always put one foot in front of the other and keep moving forward!

We use the enormous spiritual charge and inject holiness into the otherwise secular days of the year. In the teachings of the Kabbalists and Chasidic masters, we transform the mundane into the holy. We reveal the G-dly spark that lies hidden within all of creation. We spiritualize the physical.

This is why we are here. G-d, in His infinite kindness and wisdom, chose us to ‘partner’ with Him in perfecting the world. Can you think of a greater honor or more important mission?

It turns out that the entire purpose of the High Holidays is for us to prepare for that which comes after. He fills our proverbial cups to overflowing, with His infinite divine blessings, so that we can go out and share those blessings with a very thirsty world.

Think back to those moments in the synagogue when you felt inspired and enthused.

Tap into that energy and then release it, transforming a dark and cold world into a place of light and warmth.

This is the divine plan: that human beings, the chosen of creation, should achieve our full potential, revealing our inner G-dliness and causing the entire, created world to ascend to its highest level.

Seize the day, week, month, and year!

Haftorah for Shabbos Parsha No’ach

Isaiah 54:1-10.

Forsaken Jerusalem is likened to a barren woman devoid of children. G‑d enjoins her to rejoice, for the time will soon come when the Jewish nation will return and proliferate, repopulating Israel's once desolate cities. The prophet assures the Jewish people that G‑d has not forsaken them. Although He has momentarily hid His countenance from them, He will gather them from their exiles with great mercy. The haftorah compares the final Redemption to the pact G‑d made with Noah in this week's Torah reading. Just as G‑d promised to never bring a flood over the entire earth, so too He will never again be angry at the Jewish people.

"For the mountains may move and the hills might collapse, but My kindness shall not depart from you, neither shall the covenant of My peace collapse."

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FOURTH year!

Incredible Cases in Rabbinic Responsa

What Jews asked, how rabbis answered, and the stories their letters tell

Listen in on the questions your ancestors asked across history as they paid taxes, got married, fled war, and celebrated Passover in secret.

What do their questions reveal about how they lived? What do these sages’ answers reveal about the process of applying Jewish law?

Join this six-session course to explore the fascinating world of rabbinic responsa. You’ll see the tools Jewish tradition offers for living by timeless values in a world that never stands still—and come face to face with raw Jewish history.

This course will satisfy the continuing education (CLE) requirements of lawyers and legal professionals.

SUMMER 5786—4 LESSONS

Foundations of Freedom

The Jewish ethics that shaped America’s founding

In time for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this four-session course reflects on the Jewish ethics, ideas, and values that inspired and influenced America’s founders—and still shape our government and society today.

Was it always self-evident that all people are “created equal”? What is the “pursuit of happiness”? What inspired America’s system of checks and balances? And looking ahead, what steps can we take to build a just and united future?

This course will satisfy the continuing education (CLE) requirements of lawyers and legal professionals.

With the hostages coming home, we are reading, seeing, and experiencing their stories of immense bravery in the most horrific conditions. From refusing repeated calls to convert to Islam to bravely requesting (and receiving!) tefillin, they have shown us all the power of the Jewish soul and the potency that lies within the choice to remain masters of our own destiny.

There’s a powerful and timeless message in the early chapters of Genesis, one that speaks directly to this point. After Cain faced unimaginable guilt and loss, he could have withdrawn from the world. But instead, the Torah tells us that he built a city and named it after his son, Chanoch. In that simple but profound act, he showed that even in the face of tragedy, there’s a choice: to hide, or to rebuild. Cain chose life.

Interestingly, Chanoch comes from the same root as “chinuch,” meaning education. Building a city is one way to create a better world; educating the next generation is how we ensure it lasts. Real rebuilding happens not just with bricks, but with values—teaching our children to stand for light instead of darkness, compassion instead of cruelty, and hope instead of despair.

Throughout Jewish history, we’ve lived this truth. Even in our darkest moments, including the tunnels of Gaza, our response has never been to retreat. We gather, we comfort, we rebuild. Stronger, prouder, and more united than before.

Today, we declare: We will build, we will teach, and we will bring more light into this world. Because Am Yisrael Chai, the Jewish people live.

With heartfelt prayers for the ultimate rebuilding of our people and our land, with the coming of Moshiach.

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

HOLIDAY APPEAL

Dear Friends,

I wish I had some time to catch my breath. The holidays ended with a BANG! Sukkot/Shmini Atzeret/Simchat Torah brought the Season of Our Joy to a climactic conclusion. A conclusion that we will never forget. The deeper we got into the holidays, the higher the energy level rose, until on Simchat Torah it was ‘over-the-top’!

Mike Perez and family generously sponsored the festivities. They deserve a sincere thank you from our community.

We also must acknowledge the Chabad at La Costa Team, and all of the many volunteers who made the holiday so meaningful for so many.

While looking around during the festivities it made me realize how very important opening our Educational Level truly is. We were busting at the seams! The children need space to play without disturbing services (or perhaps, we need a place for services where we won’t disturb the children’s play?).

We are fast approaching the finish line. The elevator installation has begun. G-d willing, it should be in by the end of October!

We have been hard at work preparing for the day it is finally open. We will fill the space with activities, classes, and all sorts of useful spaces. It will be a place of thriving growth and Jewish life!

It is our precious community that has brought this dream to fruition. YOU HAVE DONE THIS!

This partnership is precious. It is not only life-sustaining, but it is life-enhancing. Together, we are literally planting the seeds of Jewish sustainability, right here and right now.

All this spectacular growth is due to the generous support of our beloved friends and community!

We thank the visionaries in our midst! And we invite everyone to join in the push to take us over the finish line moving forward.

Please consider joining our growing corps of supporters by making your contribution securely online by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate, or mailing in your check.

Please accept our most sincere appreciation for your generosity and support!

With love and appreciation,

Rabbi Yeruchem & Rebbetzin Nechama Eilfort

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Haftorah for Shabbos Parsha Biraishis

Isaiah 42:5-21.

The haftorah of this week's reading opens with a statement by "the Almighty G‑d, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who laid out the earth and made grow from it." This echoes the Torah portion's recounting of the creation of the world in six days.

G‑d speaks to the prophet Isaiah, reminding him of his life's purpose and duty, namely that of arousing the Jewish people to return to being a light unto the nations, "To open blind eyes, to bring prisoners out of a dungeon; those who sit in darkness out of a prison."

The prophecy continues with a discussion regarding the Final Redemption, and the song that all of creation will sing to G‑d on that day. G‑d promises to punish all the nations that have persecuted Israel while they were exiled. The prophet also rebukes Israel for their errant ways, but assures them that they will return to the correct path and will be redeemed.

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FOURTH year!

The Kabbalah of Meaning

Jewish wisdom for finding the purpose that connects all parts of life

Life is busy. What connects it all? Join this six-session course to discover Judaism’s timeless approach to meaning in life. You’ll hear answers to some of life’s most fundamental questions: What is meaning? Where does it come from? And if we have it all, why do we seek more?

You’ll gain tools to see the meaning in the routines, relationships, and rhythms of time that shape your life. Discover the purpose in what you’ve achieved and in what lies ahead.

This course will satisfy the continuing education requirements of doctors, psychologists, social workers, LMFTs, and LMHC/LPCs in most states.

WINTER 5786—6 LESSONS

SPRING 5786—4 LESSONS

For All Humankind

How Judaism’s universal values can help us build better lives and societies

What values enable a good life? What values shape a just society? Join this four-part course to discover Judaism’s ethical message for all people.

Explore foundational Jewish texts to discover the spiritual path our tradition offers every individual. You’ll explore how these values guide family life and uncover the essential role of education. Plus, understand what it takes to achieve Judaism’s vision of a more perfect and peaceful world for all humanity.

Back in Temple times, one of Sukkot’s most joyous observances was the Water-Drawing Celebration, known as “Simchat Beit Hashoevah.”

When the Holy Temple stood, every sacrifice included wine libations poured over the altar. On Sukkot, water was also poured over the altar in a special ceremony. This ritual engendered such joy that it was celebrated all night long with music, dancing, singing, and even acrobatics.

Why water? Water is life—it nourishes, refreshes, sustains. It’s a powerful symbol especially in a land where water has always been precious. In this ritual, drawing water becomes an act of spiritual longing and connection.

But it’s about more than just water. It’s about infusing ritual with joy, energy, and community. As our sages put it, “The Divine spirit only rests upon a joyous heart.”

And for us today, Simchat Beit Hashoevah is an invitation to make joy itself part of our spiritual practice. To gather, sing, dance, share stories, be together under the sky. To pour out what’s in our hearts, and to be refilled.

We no longer have a Temple, but the Rebbe taught that even without the Temple we can “find G-d dancing in the streets” during Sukkot. This led to the establishment of week-long dancing in the streets of Brooklyn, and eventually around the world.

So this Sukkot, may we allow ourselves to rejoice; not just politely, but with abandon. May our hearts be open so that inspiration can pour in, just as water pours out. May we build memories not of passive observance, but of shared joy that lifts us all.

Shabbat shalom and chag same’ach!

SHABBOS NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS

YES Soup & Challah. NO Friday Night Services. YES Shabbos Morning Service.

HIGH HOLIDAY APPEAL

Baruch Hashem, we had incredible High Holiday services. Yom Kippur services were truly inspiring led by Rabbi Eilfort, with beautiful davening by Rabbi Yossi Rodal, and our amazing guest Cantor, Rabbi Dovi Gorelik. The feedback has been spectacular!

During services Rabbi Eilfort announced an exciting influx of teachers into our community to help us fully utilize our Educational Level, which will be coming online in the next few weeks, G-d willing. Our community will not welcome Rabbi Sholom and Rebbetzin Mushka Eilfort, but we will also be hosting a group of Rabbinic students. The additional personnel are joining us so we can facilitate more Torah study, more prayers (additional Minyanim to be added), and more acts of kindness.

This will precipitate an upsurge in activity and the amount of light and goodness emanating from our center will grow exponentially!

President of our community, Len Hyman, spoke about the beauty of making the shul part of your legacy, as he has done. (Please respond to this email for further information.)

Rabbi Eilfort invited the hundreds who attended over the course of the holidays to invest in the present and future of our community by responding ‘early and often’ to our yearly appeal. As our center grows the needs grow. Our preschool is at capacity and has a waiting list. Our Hebrew school continues to attract new students. Our services continue to shine. Our Adult Education offerings are growing dramatically.

All of this spectacular growth is due to the generous support of our beloved friends and community!

Please consider joining our supporters by making your contribution securely online by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate, or mailing in your check.

Please accept our most sincere appreciation for your generosity and support!

With love and appreciation,

Rabbi Yeruchem & Rebbetzin Nechama Eilfort

Sukkot – The Time of Our Joy is HERE!

As we transition to the second half of the Time of Our Joy we elevate the level of celebration (if that is even possible).

Reservations are required to join the festivities You can reserve your place here: chabadatlacosta.com/rsvp or jewishencinitas.com/rsvp

HOSHANAH RABBAH – SPECIAL SERVICE

The culmination of the first part of the Sukkos holiday takes place on Hoshanah Rabbah, when we observe an unique and important Mitzvah using the Aravos – the willow twigs. Our Sages teach us that we are judged regarding water, and so there is an intensity involved with the day. We will have a special service at 8:30am on Monday, October 13 to mark this special occasion. We hope to see you here!

WHAT HAPPENS ON SIMCHAS TORAH? WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?

Simchas Torah is when we conclude the yearly cycle of reading through the Torah and begin it again anew. This is a GREAT accomplishment! Whenever we conclude a portion of the Torah it is a cause for celebration, but when we conclude the entire Torah, it is a particularly happy occasion.

Normally, celebrating the Torah involves intense study and analysis. On Simchas Torah at night, however, the holiness and grandeur of the Torah is so awesome, we celebrate merely being in its presence.

And so we DANCE! DANCE! DANCE!

We circle the Bima seven times, much like a bride circling the groom, during a wedding ceremony.

We sing our hearts out with pure pleasure!

The children are a key component of the celebration, so we make sure to have lots of goodies to help enhance their experience. Flags, stuffed Torahs, and gifts are the order of the day.

Speaking of order of the day, during the day of Simchas Torah the children are called up to the Torah for an Aliyah.

Every year the Perez family sponsors our delicious banquet and this year will be no different. Our crew is already hard at work preparing a Mexican Fiesta menu, that will be as pleasing to the eyes as it is to the palate.

There is no charge to attend, but we appreciate knowing (by responding to this email) if you will be joining us on Tuesday night, October 14th at 6:30pm.

Don’t forget Shmini Atzeres the night before and the day leading up to Simchas Torah. Shmini Atzeres is so important that we say the Yizkor Memorial service on Tuesday, October 14th at approximately 12pm.

The final part of the Sukkos celebrations will be energizing and inspiring! Please plan on being here with your Chabad family.

This is our policy for numerous reasons, not least of which is the fact that Kiddush sponsorships help generate much-needed income for our community and encourages more people to participate.

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Haftorah for Shabbos Chol Hamo’ed Sukkos

Ezekiel 38:18-39:16.

The subject of the haftorah of this Shabbat is the war of Gog and Magog that will precede the Final Redemption. Its connection to the holiday of Sukkot is that according to tradition the war will take place during the month of Tishrei, the month when the holiday of Sukkot falls. In addition, this war is identical to the one described in the fourteenth chapter of Zachariah, the  haftorah read on the first day of Sukkot, which concludes by saying that the gentile survivors of this war will be required to go to Jerusalem every year on the holiday of Sukkot to pay homage to G‑d.

The prophet describes Gog's war against Israel and G‑d's furious response. G‑d will send an earthquake, pestilence, great floods and hailstones and fire—utterly destroying Gog's armies.

"And I will reveal Myself in My greatness and in My holiness and will be recognized in the eyes of many nations, and they will know that I am the Lord. . . . I will make known My Holy Name in the midst of My people Israel, and I will no longer cause My Holy Name to be profaned, and the nations will know that I, the Lord, am holy in Israel."

The haftorah concludes by  saying that the weaponry of the defeated armies of Gog will provide fuel for fire for seven years! The Jews "shall carry no wood from the fields nor cut down any from the forests, for they shall make fires from the weapons."

Haftarah for Shmini Atzeres

I Kings 8:54-66.

The setting for the haftorah for the holiday of Shemini Atzeret is the dedication of the first Holy Temple by King Solomon. The dedication was a seven-day festive affair, which was immediately followed by the seven festive days of the holiday of Sukkot. And then, as we read in this  haftorahon the "eighth day" (i.e., Shemini Atzeret), Solomon sent the people off to their homes.

The reading opens immediately after King Solomon concludes a lengthy public prayer to G‑d. He then blesses the assembled Jewish people and encourages them to follow G‑d's will and observe the commandments—it is this blessing that occupies the bulk of the reading.

The King then inaugurates the Holy Temple by bringing various offerings: peace offerings, burnt offerings, and meal and fat offerings. And then, "on the eighth day he dismissed the people, and they blessed the King and went to their homes, rejoicing and delighted of heart for all the goodness that G‑d had wrought for David His servant and for Israel His people."

Haftarah for Simchas Torah

Joshua 1:1-18.

This week's Haftorah describes Joshua's succession of his master Moses, whose passing is discussed in the Torah reading.

G‑d reveals Himself to Joshua, and appoints him as Moses' successor. G‑d encouraged Joshua to lead the Israelites in to the Holy Land. "Every place on which the soles of your feet will tread I have given to you, as I have spoken to Moses. From this desert and Lebanon to the great river, the Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the great sea westward shall be your boundary." G‑d assures Joshua that He will be with him just as He was with Moses and encourages him to be strong and brave, to study the Torah constantly and keep it close, so that he may succeed in all his endeavors.

Joshua orders his officers to prepare the Jewish people to cross the Jordan River. He then tells the members of the tribes of Reuben, Gad and half the tribe of Manasseh, who had chosen to settle on the eastern bank of the Jordan, to go and assist their brethren in the conquest of the Canaanite mainland, after which they would return to their plot of land. The Jewish people pledge their allegiance to Joshua: "Just as we obeyed Moses in everything, so shall we obey you. Only that the L-rd your G‑d be with you as He was with Moses."

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FOURTH year!
