The month of Kislev in the Chabad world is considered a most joyous month, starting from the first day of the month, when we celebrate the Rebbe’s recovery from a heart attack in 1977.
This week we commemorated two dates, the 9th and the 10th of Kislev. The 9th is the birthday as well as the yahrzeit of Rabbi Dovber, the second Chabad Rebbe, known as the Mitteler Rebbe. The 10th is the anniversary of his release from prison in 1826, after being imprisoned on trumped up charges in Czarist Russia.
Sadly, a day before being able to commemorate the first anniversary of his liberation, on his birthday, he passed away. Needless to say, the expected celebration of the anniversary did not go as planned, but his followers still believed that the Rebbe would have wanted them to celebrate. So with tears in their eyes, following their Rebbe’s funeral, they celebrated the day.
Today, nearly 200 years later, we find ourselves in a somewhat similar predicament. We continue to lament the fact the Rebbe of our generation is no longer physically with us, while at the same time we celebrate everything the Rebbe stood for and promoted.
Chabad continues to grow around the world in unprecedented numbers, ensuring that the Rebbe’s legacy will forever remain alive, until the coming of Moshiach, when we will be reunited.
Shabbat shalom.

Living with the Times

Parshat Va’Yetzei – And He Left
A Giant’s Presence
This week we continue with the narrative involving our righteous father Yaakov / Jacob. The portion begins, “And Yaakov left Be’er Sheva and he went to Charan.” Be’er Sheva was where Yaakov grew up in the home of his holy parents Yitzchak (Isaac) and Rivka (Rebecca). Yaakov was compelled to flee his parents’ home and head to his Uncle Lavan’s who lived in Charan due to the homicidal rage of Eisav, Yaakov’s evil twin, who wanted to murder him for taking the blessing that he desired.
Yaakov did not head straight to his uncle’s, however. The commentaries note that he made a ‘brief’ fourteen-year detour in the house of Torah study led by Shem and Ever, the son and grandson of Noah who were prophets. After that enriching experience Yaakov was on his way, but stopped to rest at the site of the future Holy Temple, on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. It was there that he had his famous dream of angels ascending and descending a ladder that led to heaven. The Almighty appeared to Yaakov and reassured him that he would be greatly blessed and that his progeny would spread forth in all directions.
We find that before going to sleep Yaakov arranged stones around his head, presumably for protection. The Rabbis point out that this seems strange, for if Yaakov felt he needed protection why not arrange rocks around his entire body? If he had faith that G-d would guard him why did he need any rocks at all? The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, answers that Yaakov had complete trust that the Almighty would protect him. The purpose of the rocks arranged around his head was to symbolically protect that which he had learned from the potential influences he was sure to encounter when he arrived in Charan, a place known for its evil ways.
Tradition tells us that Yaakov was the “choicest of the Patriarchs.” He successfully combined the best of his grandfather Avraham and father Yitzchak. Avraham excelled at acts of loving-kindness and Yitzchak excelled at self-restraint and self-perfection. Yaakov managed to fuse the two approaches. It was only Yaakov who managed to father exclusively righteous children. From this we see that he did something exceedingly well to the extent that it positively impacted all of his children.
We now can go back and understand an anomaly in the opening sentence. The portion starts by telling us where Yaakov left, something we already knew. Why didn’t it just say, “And Yaakov went to Charan?” Rashi, the great classical commentator, explains a specific lesson from the seemingly extra phrase. When Yaakov, great Tzaddik (righteous man) that he was, departed Be’er Sheva it made an impact. Likewise, when he arrived in Charan it made an impact. That is what happens when a saintly person leaves a place and arrives somewhere else; it makes an impact. The influence of the holy is profound and enduring.
The question now becomes quite pointed and that is; “Do you make a positive impact when you depart and/or arrive somewhere?” We are told to look to the actions of the Patriarchs and to remember that they served as trailblazers for us. In other words, if Yaakov could do it so can we; indeed, so must we.
Let us therefore resolve to be a positive influence wherever we may go. It could be our influence that will ultimately transform a Charan into a Be’er Sheva!
Wishing everyone a happy and HEALTHY Shabbos!
Haftarah Parshat VaYeitzei
Hosea 11:7-12:14.
This week's haftorah mentions Jacob's flight from home to the "field of Aram," an episode that is recounted in this week's Torah reading.
The haftorah begins with the prophet Hosea's rebuke of the Jewish people for forsaking G‑d. Nevertheless, Hosea assures the people that G‑d will not abandon them: "How can I give you, Ephraim, and deliver you [to the hands of the nations]? . . . I will not act with My fierce anger; I will not return to destroy Ephraim."
The prophet discusses the misdeeds of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, and the future degeneration of the Kingdom of Judea. He contrasts their behavior to that of their forefather Jacob who was faithful to G‑d and prevailed against enemies, both human and angelic.
The haftorah also makes mention of the ingathering of the exiles which will occur during the Final Redemption: "They shall hasten like a bird from Egypt and like a dove from the land of Assyria; and I will place them in their houses, says the Lord."

Giving Tuesday THIS Week – A Heartfelt Appeal
In modern America the day after Thanksgiving has become known as Black Friday. People all over this country sprint to malls so as to find the best bargains available – “The lowest prices of the year!” They are striving to get their holiday shopping done at the earliest possible moment for the best possible price. The technical term for this is ‘Bargain Hunting’.
As technology has evolved more and more people have started to buy online and they wait for the following Monday, now called Cyber Monday. Many sit by their computer diligently seeking the best online deals available for everything from travel opportunities to pet food.
Well, a few years ago a new creation was born. It is called Giving Tuesday. It is a day when people are encouraged to give charity. After the riotous spending on Black Friday and Cyber Monday it is certainly a refreshing change of pace when we are meant to focus on others via supporting charitable causes.
We live in an amazing country! The number of worthy nonprofits has skyrocketed. The lovingkindness exhibited by the citizens of this country far surpasses any other country. Americans are aware of the manifold blessings in our lives. We use our freedom to work hard and make a good living, and we use our freedom to share the blessings of that wealth with those less fortunate.
“Ashrainu mah tov chelkainu!” – “How fortunate are we with our goodly portion!”
This year is a particularly important year, as the pandemic has ravaged the nonprofit sector. Regrettably, during times of economic uncertainty charitable contributions are often the first item cut from family budgets.
There is a beautiful metaphor that illustrates another way to think about things: If one is a wagon driver and his wagon is full with merchandise and then gets stuck in the mud, what is the correct approach to freeing it? Obviously lightening the load is the most effective thing to do. However, would one ever contemplate taking the wheels off of the wagon in order to lighten the load?!
The charity that we give, the Tzedakah, which is translated as righteousness or justice, that we fulfill when we give ARE the wheels of the cart. When we give to others we share life with others. In fact, it is the most G-dly thing we, as limited beings, are capable of doing. Not only do we benefit others when we give, but many blessings rebound back and come to rest on us and our loved ones. We are promised that when we give with an open hand the Almighty deals with us with an ‘open hand.’
In other words, if one wants to insure a healthy income and plenty of resources the first thing he/she should do is give Tzedakah generously!
With this in mind we are asking you to make Chabad at La Costa your Giving Tuesday charity of choice. You can give on Monday or Wednesday too, if you wish. The main thing is that you please give. Like voting in Chicago - one should give early and give often. ;)
Due to the pandemic we have lost several of our revenue streams including our catering operations and donations for Kiddushes and Aliyas etc. Our response has been to give MORE to the community! We have literally sent thousands and thousands of Challos, Soups, and Do-It-Yourself holiday kits to people, members and non members, all over our area. For Chanukah we will be doing even more, please G-d.
We have only been able to do so because of our supporters, our investors, our angels, meaning YOU! We know that you are facing many ‘asks’ by many worthy causes. We are asking you to please make our community your priority. We are seeking to miraculously transform our red ink into black ink. And yes, we are hoping that YOU will be our miracle.
There are so many ways to give. Even the US government has changed the tax laws for this year to help the nonprofit sector (see this article: https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/20/your-money/charity-deductions-taxes-coronavirus.html). Even if you don’t itemize your taxes you can take a $300 ‘above the line’ deduction for charitable gifts. If you do itemize you can take much more! One can give stock, or real estate, or even boats or cars. All that is needed is the desire to give.
It is interesting that many in the Orthodox community do not specifically celebrate Thanksgiving because they say that every day should be Thanksgiving (and we wholeheartedly agree; every day should be Thanksgiving just like every day should be Mother’s Day and Father’s Day). Well, with due respect, we can now clearly add that every day should be Giving Tuesday.
Can we count on you?
With Love and Appreciation,
Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.
Pay-What-You-Can-Membership
We want the membership experience to be positive. We want you to feel GOOD about giving. Yes, we have suggested donations, but you should give what you feel you can afford. If you cannot comfortably give the suggested amount THAT IS OK. If you can give more than the suggested amount, THANK YOU, IT IS APPRECIATED! We love and appreciate your participation, and that is that. Please fill out our Membership form online by logging onto: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/Membership.
Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - NOW

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.
We can help.
Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today". Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing’. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).
The donation is only $500 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed
PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.
THANK YOU for your cooperation!
