Large Group Visiting THIS Shabbos…

This Shabbos, November 20, we will be hosting a large group of approximately 100 people, including children, from Los Angeles as they are visiting for a Shabbaton. We warmly welcome guests. We have clearly informed them that our policy is that they should wear masks while in the sanctuary. This is something that they are not necessarily used to, so we may see lackluster adherence. Rabbi Eilfort and those he specifically asks to help him will remind them. We are recommending to everyone who may have compromised health, or who may not be fully vaccinated, and/or who may be at acute risk for covid to keep the above in mind and to take the necessary precautions.

We sincerely thank everyone for their understanding and support as we do our best during this health crisis to maintain our welcoming disposition, which is one of our most important attributes as a Chabad center, as we do everything possible to maintain a safe atmosphere for all who attend.

Tuesday night, November 23rd there will be a Farbrengen (Chasidic Gathering) hosted by Chabad Headquarters located at Chabad Hebrew Academy, 10785 Pomerado Rd., S. Diego. The entire community is invited for what promises be an inspiring and meaningful event. There is no charge to attend, but reservations should be made by responding to this message no later than Thursday, November 18th, as they will be serving dinner. 

The evening will feature stories and profound Chasidic thoughts, as well as beautiful niggunim (melodies that touch the soul). 
The event will begin at 7:30pm.

We will be mailing out a Chanukah brochure, which includes our complete schedule for this joyous light-giving holiday! Keep your eyes on your mailbox.

The Foundation Project - Donations

 We are raising funds that will be used towards completing our basement. This project will include a TEEN LOUNGE, CLASSROOMS, a PLAYGROUND, OFFICES, STORAGE SPACE, BATHROOMS, and more. The money we raise also goes towards scholarships for Hebrew School students, our Challah and Chicken Soup program, and all of our ongoing expenses.

Soup and Challah - NO Soup & Challah This Week

We are seeking additional volunteers to help deliver Soup and Challah. If you can help with this beautiful Mitzvah please respond to this message. Thank you and G-d bless!

We wanted to extend a very special thank you to Carrie Rossenfeld for her help every week!

We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. We will not be delivering it if no request was made. Often times we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!

Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Living with the Times -  Parshat Va’Yishlach – And He Sentt

Appeasing Evil?!

This week we read of the brotherly reunion of Yaakov and Esav after their long separation. As a brief reminder Yaakov (Jacob) hurriedly left the house of his righteous parents Yitzchak (Isaac) and Rivka (Rebecca) due to the homicidal rage of his (evil) twin Esav who wanted to murder him. Why did Esav want to murder his twin brother? He was enraged that Yaakov, through stealthy means, acquired his father’s blessing instead of him. Ultimately, everyone agreed-including Esav himself-with Rivka’s assessment that the potent blessing would find an appropriate vessel within Yaakov rather than Esav.

Yaakov stayed for 20 years with his uncle Lavan, which is where he built his family and made his fortune. The fact that Yaakov was able to accomplish all of this is really quite miraculous, as his uncle kept cheating him in their interpersonal and business dealings. Lavan tried to undermine the spiritual legacy found within Yaakov and his family and to replace it with his idol worshipping ways. Nonetheless, the Holy One kept Yaakov and his interests safe and secure.  

Upon his return, when Yaakov and his family approached, Esav prepared a ‘warm’ welcome for his brother. The Torah tells us that he was accompanied by 400 men. This vast ‘welcoming committee’ was actually an army that planned to decimate Yaakov and his family. However, Yaakov acted decisively by praying to G-d for help, dividing his camp in case of war, offering an extremely generous gift (aka peace offering), and showing deference to Esav.

Yaakov’s plan worked! They ultimately met and even gave each other a hug and kiss, not to mention blessings, and ultimately plans to fully reunite by living together.

Why would Yaakov appease the evil Esav? Do we pay off evil? Do we bow to those who are ‘conscientious’ in their sinfulness like Esav was?

The answer is deep and profound. Yaakov was appealing to that which his father saw within Esav; tremendous spiritual potential. Regrettably Esav never harnessed the energy and creativity found within himself turning them to serve G-d. Instead he allowed his animalistic nature to run amok and dictate his behaviors according to his base appetites. Yaakov was hopeful that upon his return perhaps Esav had reformed his ways and had done Teshuva (repented).

When Yaakov sent his lavish gift with his emissaries (called Melachim in Hebrew, which means angels) he told them to tell Esav that your brother Yaakov is coming. They should then say, in Yaakov’s words, “With Lavan have I sojourned and remained until now…” The Hebrew word for sojourned is ‘Garti’. Our great commentator Rashi explains that the word has the numerical value Taryag-613. Rashi explains that Yaakov was telling Esav that he had kept the 613 commandments while living with his uncle Lavan. We can now appreciate why Yaakov would tell the evil Esav this seemingly unimportant, at least unimportant to Esav, piece of information.

What Yaakov was saying was that the evil Lavan did not influence him even one iota to stop practicing the commandments. Furthermore, he was showing a vast and prosperous camp that came into being because of his adherence to the commandments! Furthermore, Yaakov willingly shared the accrued wealth with his brother, the one with the tremendous spiritual potential.

Did this message influence Esav? The answer is, to a degree, yes. His rage turned into something different and instead of offering the sword he offered a kiss.

Yaakov perceived that the time was still not ripe for them to live together. That would come in the future. First, Esav must undergo an even more dramatic transformation. But Yaakov is the one who got the process started.

We are Yaakov’s children. We look at Yaakov’s extraordinary life, filled with challenges and triumphs, and we come to understand that we all have a spark of Yaakov within us, which enables us to also be able to transform the wicked into something different. How can we effectuate such an enormous transformation? We do so by staying true to who we are – to remain steadfast in our connection and observance of the Divine commandments!

Haftarah of Shabbat Parshat Va’Yishlach

Obadiah 1:1-21.

This week's haftorah mentions the punishment of Edom, the descendents of Esau, whose conflict with Jacob is chronicled in this week's Torah reading.

The prophet Obadiah, himself an Edomian convert to Judaism, describes the punishment destined for the nation of Edom. The Edomites did not come to Judea's aid when she was being destroyed by the Babylonians, and even joined in the carnage. Many years later the Edomites (the Roman Empire) themselves destroyed the Second Temple and mercilessly killed and enslaved their Jewish cousins.

Though the Roman Empire was one of the mightiest to ever inhabit the earth, the prophet forewarns: "If you go up high like an eagle, and if you place your nest among the stars, from there I will bring you down, says the Lord. . . And the house of Jacob shall be fire and the house of Joseph a flame, and the house of Esau shall become stubble, and they shall ignite them and consume them, and the house of Esau shall have no survivors, for the Lord has spoken."

After describing the division of Esau's lands amongst the returning Judean exiles, the haftorah concludes with the well known phrase: "And saviors shall ascend Mt. Zion to judge the mountain of Esau, and the Lord shall have the kingdom."

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today". Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School & C-Kids

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Chanukah

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.  Our students want to be here!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Tzedakah news – 

Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.

These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.

Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.

Large Group Visiting NEXT Shabbos…

Next Shabbos, November 20, we will be hosting a large group of approximately 100 people, including children, from Los Angeles as they are visiting for a Shabbaton. We warmly welcome guests. Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Living with the Times -  Parshat Va’Yetzei – And He Left

A Giant’s Presence

This week we continue with the narrative involving our righteous father Yaakov / Jacob. The portion begins, “And Yaakov left Be’er Sheva and he went to Charan.” Be’er Sheva was where Yaakov grew up in the home of his holy parents Yitzchak (Isaac) and Rivka (Rebecca). Yaakov was compelled to flee his parents’ home and head to his Uncle Lavan’s who lived in Charan due to the homicidal rage of Eisav, Yaakov’s evil twin, who wanted to murder him for taking the blessing that he desired.

Yaakov did not head straight to his uncle’s, however. The commentaries note that he made a ‘brief’ fourteen-year detour in the house of Torah study led by Shem and Ever, the son and grandson of Noah who were prophets. After that enriching experience Yaakov was on his way, but stopped to rest at the site of the future Holy Temple, on Mount Moriah in Jerusalem. It was there that he had his famous dream of angels ascending and descending a ladder that led to heaven. The Almighty appeared to Yaakov and reassured him that he would be greatly blessed and that his progeny would spread forth in all directions. 

We find that before going to sleep Yaakov arranged stones around his head, presumably for protection. The Rabbis point out that this seems strange, for if Yaakov felt he needed protection why not arrange rocks around his entire body? If he had faith that G-d would guard him why did he need any rocks at all? The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, answers that Yaakov had complete trust that the Almighty would protect him. The purpose of the rocks arranged around his head was to symbolically protect that which he had learned from the potential influences he was sure to encounter when he arrived in Charan, a place known for its evil ways. 

Tradition tells us that Yaakov was the “choicest of the Patriarchs.” He successfully combined the best of his grandfather Avraham and father Yitzchak. Avraham excelled at acts of loving-kindness and Yitzchak excelled at self-restraint and self-perfection. Yaakov managed to fuse the two approaches. It was only Yaakov who managed to father exclusively righteous children. From this we see that he did something exceedingly well to the extent that it positively impacted all of his children. 

We now can go back and understand an anomaly in the opening sentence. The portion starts by telling us where Yaakov left, something we already knew. Why didn’t it just say, “And Yaakov went to Charan?” Rashi, the great classical commentator, explains a specific lesson from the seemingly extra phrase. When Yaakov, great Tzaddik (righteous man) that he was, departed Be’er Sheva it made an impact. Likewise, when he arrived in Charan it made an impact. That is what happens when a saintly person leaves a place and arrives somewhere else; it makes an impact. The influence of the holy is profound and enduring. 

The question now becomes quite pointed and that is; “Do you make a positive impact when you depart and/or arrive somewhere?” We are told to look to the actions of the Patriarchs and to remember that they served as trailblazers for us. In other words, if Yaakov could do it so can we; indeed, so must we. 

Let us therefore resolve to be a positive influence wherever we may go. It could be our influence that will ultimately transform a Charan into a Be’er Sheva!

Haftarah of Shabbat Parshat Va’Yetzei 

Hosea 11:7-12:14.
This week's haftorah mentions Jacob's flight from home to the "field of Aram," an episode that is recounted in this week's Torah reading.
The haftorah begins with the prophet Hosea's rebuke of the Jewish people for forsaking G d. Nevertheless, Hosea assures the people that G d will not abandon them: "How can I give you, Ephraim, and deliver you [to the hands of the nations]? . . . I will not act with My fierce anger; I will not return to destroy Ephraim."
The prophet discusses the misdeeds of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, and the future degeneration of the Kingdom of Judea. He contrasts their behavior to that of their forefather Jacob who was faithful to G d and prevailed against enemies, both human and angelic. 
The haftorah also makes mention of the ingathering of the exiles which will occur during the Final Redemption: "They shall hasten like a bird from Egypt and like a dove from the land of Assyria; and I will place them in their houses, says the Lord."

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Foundations

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Tzedakah news – 

Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.

These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.

Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.
