MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

The seasons have changed, our daylight hours have become increasingly shorter, and the nights have become longer and colder. It is hard to believe that a month and a half has passed since the horrific Simchat Torah massacre on October 7th. Israel is at war, and our hostages have still not returned.

We are now in the Jewish month of Kislev, the month when we celebrate the victory and power of light. Though it is such a dark month outside, it is also a month of miracles and a time when the glow of the candle shines its brightest. As the blackness lingers outdoors, we need to create greater brightness within.

Throughout the history of the Jewish people, many nations have tried to destroy us and snuff out our light. But we remain here today, still shining the light of Divine morality, spreading the beautiful teachings of the Torah, and performing mitzvot.

This week, we read more about our third patriarch, Jacob (Yaakov). The name Yaakov is made up of a yud, which is the smallest letter and refers to the essence of G-d, and eikev, which means “heel,” the lowest part of the body. The mission of the Jewish people is to bring the light of G-d into even the lowest and darkest reaches of our world.

It’s an awesome undertaking, but light prevails, even over the most intense darkness.

As in the days of our past, may this month usher in great miracles for our nation.

With prayers for the security of the land of Israel, the safety of our brave soldiers, and the immediate return of all our hostages,

BMH Shabbaton NEXT Week

Next Shabbos, December 1 -2, about 90 of our friends from the BMH shul in Los Angeles will be joining us. This will be the third year they will be coming. It is so lovely having this beautiful community join ours and share in the joy of Shabbos! Please make sure to welcome them with your usual warmth and love.

We will probably handle the Kiddush the same way as in previous years, which is to have their group in one area and our members in another with a double buffet to minimize the inconvenience.

In their generosity and graciousness, they have invited our community to join in a concert on Saturday night. Please see the flyer below. It will certainly be a great weekend!

Chanukah is Almost Here

We have a very full schedule planned for your enjoyment! Please see the details below.

Tehillim neged(against) Tillim

Tillim are rockets in Hebrew. Add a Hey (ה) for Hashem’s name and it’s Tehillim. Join me in completing the entire book of Psalms together as a group.

“5 Minutes Today for Israel”

Dear Community,

The past month has been unimaginable. While still deep in grief, we are being overwhelmed with horrifying videos, stories, posts, and countless incidents of antisemitism. Nonetheless, we still need to focus on advocacy. Our pro-Israel voices must be heard.

It’s difficult to know what to do in order to maximize our effectiveness.

"5 Minutes Today for Israel" provides a centralized, manageable action-item bulletin to focus your efforts. Please opt in to receive a daily list of single-click actions you can take, straight from your inbox, to advocate for Israel and push back against antisemitism.

OPT-IN HERE

Enhanced Security

Our number one priority is to ensure the safety and security of our shul family. We have a robust security system in place. We have gone to the added expense of hiring a uniformed, armed guard, who is with us, watching over us, in addition to our internal security team.

The added layer of security is expensive. Please help us by donating to the security of our shul community by following this link: www.chabadatlacosta.com/donate. The cost is approximately $300 per week. All donations are tax-deductible.

Weekly Parsha Class:

Rabbi Sholom will be teaching the Rohr JLI's Torah Studies lesson every week. This is a weekly class you will not want to miss. Available in person, on Zoom, and on Facebook Live.

The WORLD OF KABBALAH is coming to YOU

What do the Kabbalistic terms mean? How do they apply to you? Six lessons with Nechama.

Next Thursday - Lesson 3
The Infinite Light.
Observe how G-d’s infinite light unites diverse sefirot and how we can replicate this phenomenon to overcome human differences and create harmonious relationships. Plus, see how willpower mirrors infinity and enables us to overcome obstacles.

Kiddush Sponsor

This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored Miriam Reisman in loving memory of her parents, Joseph Meyer Fish and Esther Epstein Fish, of blessed memory.

Each Shabbos after services, our beautiful community enjoys Shabbos lunch together. It is a true celebration where we bask in each other’s company while savoring delicious food. YOU ARE INVITED AND ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE

An Important Note about Kiddushes –

The policy of the shul is to allow multiple sponsors for every Kiddush unless it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or something similar (like a 50th wedding anniversary etc.).

There is no such thing as an exclusive Kiddush sponsor.

This is our policy for numerous reasons, not least of which is the fact that Kiddush sponsorships help generate much-needed income for our community and encourages more people to participate.

We thank you for your support and understanding!

Soup & Challah Sponsors

Soup and Challah is being sponsored by Clive Walden & the estate of Channah Hale. A big Yasher Koach to our volunteer deliverers - Carrie Rossenfeld.

Challah is delivered to Mental Health Residential Centers in the area, people undergoing chemotherapy, and people who really love the addition to their Shabbos experience.

Deliver and get a bag of challah for your family as well!

Supporting Our Community

Volunteers Needed

We have received some requests for help from our community and the Rabbis and Rebbetzins are maxed out in their commitments. If you would be able to visit with some people who are not well and/or lonely, or to help with our weekly Challah/Soup deliveries, it would be greatly appreciated and a HUGE Mitzvah! Please respond to this message if you can help.

G-d bless and THANK YOU in advance!

How to Make a Donation (or Payment)

We would be nowhere without the generous support of our community. Please know that your support is profoundly appreciated!

There are many ways to donate besides for checks and cash. Following please find a list of the various other ‘platforms’ that are available for secure donations that go directly and entirely into the synagogue account (even though they say Nechama's name).

1. PayPal  [email protected]  or PayPal.me/Neilfort

2. Venmo @Nechama-Eilfort

3. Cashapp $nechamae

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE
Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Haftarah for Parshas Vayeitzei from Chabad.org

Hosea 11:7-12:14.

This week's haftorah mentions Jacob's flight from home to the "field of Aram," an episode that is recounted in this week's Torah reading.

The haftorah begins with the prophet Hosea's rebuke of the Jewish people for forsaking G‑d. Nevertheless, Hosea assures the people that G‑d will not abandon them: "How can I give you, Ephraim, and deliver you [to the hands of the nations]? . . . I will not act with My fierce anger; I will not return to destroy Ephraim."

The prophet discusses the misdeeds of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, and the future degeneration of the Kingdom of Judea. He contrasts their behavior to that of their forefather Jacob who was faithful to G‑d and prevailed against enemies, both human and angelic.

The haftorah also makes mention of the ingathering of the exiles which will occur during the Final Redemption: "They shall hasten like a bird from Egypt and like a dove from the land of Assyria; and I will place them in their houses, says the Lord."

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Send a personal email to   [email protected] to schedule an appointment today.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to   [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Membership

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!

We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

This past weekend, thousands of Chabad rabbis from around the world gathered in New York City for our annual conference, the International Kinus Hashluchim. This year, key events—like the group trip to the Ohel and the grand banquet—were moved up several hours to allow our colleagues in Israel, who made a unanimous decision to remain at their posts during Israel’s time of need, to join from a concurrent event via live feed.

Just a few days later, a historic gathering took place in Washington DC, bringing together Jews from all walks of life and all political denominations, in support of our brothers and sisters in Israel in an unprecedented display of Jewish pride and unity.

But there is another global unity undertaking that you can join—the writing of a Torah scroll for the merit of the safety of the people of Israel.

The Torah is the common denominator that unites all Jewish people. Special Torah scrolls are being written in Israel, in which every single Jewish person may purchase a letter to become part of the Torah and unite together. Besides fulfilling (at least in part) the Biblical commandment to write a Torah scroll, having a letter in these scrolls connects you and Jewish people all over the globe, in Israel and the Diaspora, into one Torah-created unified entity.

One nation, one Torah, one G‑d. Click here to join.

Please respond to this message if you can help.

G-d bless and THANK YOU in advance!

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE
Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Toldot Haftorah in a Nutshell
Malachi 1:1-2:7.

This week's haftorah opens with a mention of the tremendous love G‑d harbors for the children of Jacob, and the retribution He will visit upon the children of Esau who persecuted their cousins. This follows the theme of this week's Torah reading, whose two protagonists are Jacob and Esau.

The prophet Malachi then rebukes the kohanim (priests) who offer blemished and emaciated animals on G‑d's altar: "Were you to offer it to your governor, would he be pleased or would he favor you? . . . O that there were even one among you that would close the doors [of the Temple] and that you would not kindle fire on My altar in vain!"

The haftorah ends with a strong enjoinder to the kohanim to return to the original covenant that G‑d had made with their ancestor, Aaron the High Priest. "True teaching was in his mouth, and injustice was not found on his lips. In peace and equity he went with Me, and he brought back many from iniquity."

This is a synopsis of the Haftorah that is read in Chabad synagogues. Other communities could possibly read more, less, or a different section of the Prophets altogether. Additionally, specific calendrical conditions can cause another Haftorah to be read instead of this one.

B"H

MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

We are witnessing a movement. An awakening.

In Israel and abroad, Jews who have not felt strongly connected to Israel or the Jewish people are suddenly feeling pulled to do more (and more) mitzvot.

People who have not stepped foot in a synagogue in decades are now showing up for services. Thousands of pairs of tefillin have been donated. Tens of thousands of women worldwide are lighting Shabbat candles, many for the first time. People who just two weeks ago couldn’t see eye-to-eye religiously or politically are now hugging each other on the streets.

As I witness this outpouring, I honestly wonder, why? Why has atrocity caused this spiritual awakening? Why does suffering create such an expression of unity?

What we are witnessing right now is the Jewish soul screaming, G‑d, I want to connect with you.

The trivial things that were taking up so much of our energy have been crushed. The curtain has been pulled back, and the façade of our reality has crumbled, leaving our essence exposed.

So, I do an extra mitzvah, because G‑d, You are the only eternal truth. I connect with my fellow Jew, because no matter how much we quibble or disagree, we are one. I know this not because I have read or studied it, not because I can even express it in words, but because my soul intuitively understands.

Because right now, deep down, we feel—no, we know!—with certainty, that we are the People whom G‑d promised will succeed in transforming the evil and depravity of this world to usher in the greatest light, morality, and peace for all humanity.

With heartfelt prayers for the safety of the Jewish People and the immediate return of all the hostages,

The added layer of security is expensive. Please help us by donating to the security of our shul community by following this link: www.chabadatlacosta.com/donate. The cost is approximately $300 per week. All donations are tax-deductible.

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE
Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Haftarah for Parshas Chayei Sarah from Chabad.org

I Kings 1:1-31.

This week's haftorah describes an aging King David, echoing this week's Torah reading, which mentions that "Abraham was was old, advanced in days."

King David was aging, and he was perpetually cold. A young maiden, Abishag of Shunam, was recruited to serve and provide warmth for the elderly monarch.

Seeing his father advancing in age, Adoniahu, one of King David's sons, seized the opportunity to prepare the ground for his ascension to his father's throne upon the latter's passing — despite King David's express wishes that his son Solomon succeed him. Adoniahu recruited two influential individuals — the High Priest and the commander of David's armies — both of whom had fallen out of David's good graces, to champion his cause. He arranged to be transported in a chariot with fifty people running before him, and invited a number of his sympathizers to a festive party where he publicized his royal ambitions.

The prophet Nathan encouraged Bat Sheva, mother of Solomon, to approach King David and plead with him to reaffirm his choice of Solomon as his successor. This she did, mentioning Adoniahu's recent actions of which the king had been unaware. Nathan later joined the Bat Sheva and the king to express support for Bat Sheva's request. King David acceded to their request: "Indeed," he told Bat Sheva, "as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel saying, 'Surely Solomon, your son, shall reign after me and he shall sit on my throne in my stead,' surely, so will I swear this day."

The brutality we witnessed by Hamas has deeply affected all of us. It’s normal to feel a range of emotions right now. The pain is still deep. As of this writing, the hostages have not returned, five hundred thousand from Israel’s north and south have been displaced and are now refugees, and our brave soldiers are preparing for the next stage of the war. So much is going on and it feels too deep and painful to process.

At the same time, a strong feeling of unity and pride in being part of the Jewish people has emerged. Jews all around the world are taking on extra mitzvot, gathering for prayers, psalms and Torah learning, and engaging more in spirituality. The incomprehensible ruthlessness has brought into sharp focus what is truly important in life, and the trivialities have become just that. Many of us are still trying to make sense of why we are here and what we can do to help our brethren.

Our only choice now is: What is my personal contribution to help fix this broken world?

With heartfelt prayers for the safety of the Jewish People and the immediate return of all the hostages,

UNITY SHABBOS THIS WEEK

This week is a county-wide unity Shabbos, as we express our utter solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land. Join us as we daven and learn in honor of Israel!

Kiddush Sponsor

This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored by Miriam Reisman in loving memory of her granddaughter Jeri.

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE
Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

WHAT CAN WE DO FOR ISRAEL?

As the war in Israel and Gaza continues, we, every one of us, is needed. Israel, and the millions of Jews living there, are under constant threat. We have seen the obscenity of millions around the world cheering on the terrorists and blaming the victim, Israel, for the bestial behavior of those who fight for evil.

Many will use this abhorrent attack as an excuse to call for Israel making even more compromises as they chase a false narrative of how to achieve peace.

DON’T BE FOOLED BY THE RHETORIC!

The reason there is no peace is because the other side rejects Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish state. There is no way to negotiate with that attitude. The Palestinians have rejected their own state numerous times. Why? Because it is not really a state that they are after. They do not want Israel to exist under ANY circumstances.

Even before the murders ended in Israel the demonstrations against Israel began. The demonstrations had/have nothing to do with civilians dying due to Hamas using them as human shields as Israel reaches into Gaza to destroy Hamas’ ability to further murder innocents in Israel. How many Arab civilians in Gaza would be dead if Hamas had not gone on their barbarous and murderous rampage on Simchas Torah? The answer is zero. Hamas, AND ONLY Hamas, is responsible for the death of every single civilian in this conflict, and that is EXACTLY how Hamas wants it! They TARGET civilians! They hide behind civilians as they attempt to murder Israelis.

Israel needs political cover to accomplish what needs to be done; the utter destruction of the Hamas terror organization and its ability to bring death and destruction to others. We have an obligation to speak loudly and clearly to our elected officials and local media, and not allow the side of evil to shout us down.

The safety and security of our brothers and sisters in Israel informs the safety and security of us here. This is our battle.

The Almighty, in His benevolence, has given us (the side of good) everything we need to be victorious. We must find the courage within ourselves to win this war and end this form of evil!

Haftarah for Parshas Vayeira from Chabad.org

Kings II 4:1-37.

In this week's Torah reading, G‑d promises a child to Abraham and Sarah, despite childless Sarah's advanced age. This week's haftorah describes a similar incident that occurred many years later — the prophet Elisha assuring an elderly childless woman that she will bear a child.

The  haftorah discusses two miracles performed by the prophet Elisha. The first miracle involved a widow who was heavily in debt, and her creditors were threatening to take her two sons as slaves to satisfy the debt. When the prophet asked her what she had in her home, the widow responded that she had nothing but a vial of oil. Elisha told her to gather as many empty containers as possible — borrowing from neighbors and friends as well. She should then pour oil from her vial into the empty containers. She did as commanded, and miraculously the oil continued to flow until the last empty jug was filled. The woman sold the oil for a handsome profit, and had enough money to repay her debts and live comfortably.

The second miracle: Elisha would often pass by the city of Shunam, where he would dine and rest at the home of a certain hospitable couple. This couple even made a special addition to their home, a guest room designated for Elisha's use. When the prophet learned that the couple was childless, he blessed the woman that she should give birth to a child in exactly one year's time. And indeed, one year later a son was born to the aged couple.

A few years later the son complained of a headache and died shortly thereafter. The Shunamit woman laid the lifeless body on the bed in Elisha's designated room, and quickly summoned the prophet. Elisha hurried to the woman's home and miraculously brought the boy back to life.
