Chabad Weekly Update

B"H

Message from the Rabbi

This week’s portion is called “Chayei Sarah.” Even though it tells the story of Sarah’s passing, the name of the portion means “The Life of Sarah,” because it’s a reminder that a person’s life is defined by the impact they leave behind.

After Sarah’s death, her son Isaac finds comfort in his marriage to Rebecca. When Rebecca lights Shabbat candles in Sarah’s tent, it’s as if Sarah’s presence returns. Rebecca continues Sarah’s legacy by bringing those same traditions and values into her new home. Sarah’s influence didn’t end with her passing—it lived on through the life Isaac and Rebecca built together.

Losing a loved one is never easy, and moving on doesn’t mean forgetting. Instead, it’s about carrying their teachings and values forward. When we live the way they inspired us to, they remain a part of our lives.

Every mitzvah we do honors those who came before us. When we make our homes places of kindness, tradition, and faith, we’re not just remembering our ancestors—we’re keeping them alive in the best way possible.

May we all live full, meaningful lives and see joy in the generations that succeed us. And may we soon see the day when we’re reunited with our loved ones, proud to show them how their legacy continues.

Shabbat shalom,

Celebrating Thanksgiving as the Family We Are

We are again offering a Thanksgiving feast at the shul for those who wish to participate as a community. If your biological family is out of town and you are not able to travel to them, join your family here and celebrate with us!

Highlights of the evening will include a magnificent feast featuring turkey and all of the trimmings. As far as entertainment goes… Rabbi Eilfort bestows native American names on everyone who wants one. It is a once-a-year tradition going back decades and has become a focal point of the celebration.

The cost to attend is $36 per adult (13+) and $18 per child (3-12). Advanced reservations are a must by responding to this message.

December 24th Ancient Jewish American Custom Observed

On the evening of December 24th, a much-observed custom has arisen amongst the Jewish community of the United States; to eat Chinese food. Being that there is a severe shortage of Kosher Chinese restaurants in San Diego, Chabad at La Costa will be offering a Chinese Food Feast! Not only will there be a full buffet of Chinese favorites, there will also be games and lots of fun!

Advanced reservations are a must by responding to this email.

The cost is $25 per adult (13+) and $10 per child (3-13).

A number of commentaries are curated to make the class profound while also covering the basics. Everyone is invited to join. There is no cost to participate.

Thursdays at 6pm.

Kiddush Sponsor – ADDITIONAL SPONSORS SOUGHT

The Kiddush this week is being sponsored by Miriam Reisman in memory of Jeri Reisman may her memory be a blessing.

It is also being sponsored by the Alter Family in memory of Naomi’s mother, Doris Markus, may her memory be a blessing.

Each Shabbos after services, our beautiful community enjoys Shabbos lunch together. It is a true celebration where we bask in each other’s company while savoring delicious food.

YOU ARE INVITED AND ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE

We are always seeking additional sponsors, so if you can sponsor a Kiddush, please let us know.

An Important Note about Kiddushes –

The policy of the shul is to allow multiple sponsors for every Kiddush unless it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or something similar (like a 50th wedding anniversary etc.).

There is no such thing as an exclusive Kiddush sponsor.

This is our policy for numerous reasons, not least of which is the fact that Kiddush sponsorships help generate much-needed income for our community and encourages more people to participate.

We thank you for your support and understanding!

Soup & Challah Sponsors

Soup and Challah is being sponsored by Clive Walden & the estate of Channah Hale.

NEED MORE DRIVERS

Challah is delivered to Mental Health Residential Centers in the area, people undergoing chemotherapy, and people who really love the addition to their Shabbos experience.

Deliver and get a bag of challah for your family as well!

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE
Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Shabbos Parshas Chayah Sarah

I Kings 1:1-31.

This week's haftorah describes an aging King David, echoing this week's Torah reading, which mentions that "Abraham was was old, advanced in days."

King David was aging, and he was perpetually cold. A young maiden, Abishag of Shunam, was recruited to serve and provide warmth for the elderly monarch.

Seeing his father advancing in age, Adoniahu, one of King David's sons, seized the opportunity to prepare the ground for his ascension to his father's throne upon the latter's passing — despite King David's express wishes that his son Solomon succeed him. Adoniahu recruited two influential individuals — the High Priest and the commander of David's armies — both of whom had fallen out of David's good graces, to champion his cause. He arranged to be transported in a chariot with fifty people running before him, and invited a number of his sympathizers to a festive party where he publicized his royal ambitions.

The prophet Nathan encouraged Bat Sheva, mother of Solomon, to approach King David and plead with him to reaffirm his choice of Solomon as his successor. This she did, mentioning Adoniahu's recent actions of which the king had been unaware. Nathan later joined Bat Sheva and the king to express support for Bat Sheva's request. King David acceded to their request: "Indeed," he told Bat Sheva, "as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel saying, 'Surely Solomon, your son, shall reign after me and he shall sit on my throne in my stead,' surely, so will I swear this day."

(You can co-sponsor a Kiddush)

FUNDRAISING & VOLUNTEERING
Giving & Helping Opportunities

Volunteering

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FOURTH year! It was sponsored by Channah Hale and now carried on in her memory.

We are at the point that we need NEW volunteers to drive and deliver food packages around the area.

Please consider making this a part of your Friday routine. Volunteers pick up a few containers of soup and bags of challah at 3:00pm and delivering them to the door of the recipients. Volunteers also get soup and challah!

Enhanced Security

Our number one priority is to ensure the safety and security of our shul family. We have a robust security system in place. We have gone to the added expense of hiring a uniformed, armed guard, who is with us, watching over us, in addition to our internal security team.

The added layer of security is expensive. Please help us by donating to the security of our shul community by following this link: www.chabadatlacosta.com/donate. The cost is approximately $300 per week. All donations are tax-deductible.

New Mitzvah Opportunity

Bikur Cholim of SD Volunteers Needed!

There are a number of patients at UCSD La Jolla that have come from Israel to receive transplants here. They need our help!

Bikur Cholim of S Diego is a community organization helping the sick with care packages, visitation, driving spouses to and from the hospital, etc.

If you are able to give a few hours of your time, it will make another person's day that much better!

To get involved, sign up at www.BikurCholimSD.com

The Foundation Project  - City Approved Plan

We are raising funds that will be used towards completing our basement. This project will include a TEEN LOUNGE, CLASSROOMS, a LIBRARY, OFFICES, STORAGE SPACE, BATHROOMS, and more. Call Rabbi to inquire about available dedications. The money we raise also goes towards scholarships for Hebrew School students, our Challah and Chicken Soup program, and all of our ongoing expenses.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Send a personal email to [email protected] to schedule an appointment today.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to   [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Membership

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!

We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!

Belonging to a Jewish Community is not only gratifying and fulfilling it is also extremely important, for within the community one finds a place to connect with G-d and one’s soul, a place of learning and spiritual enrichment, a great source of friends, a place to bestow one’s Jewish legacy upon his or her child/ren, and so much more. Check out   www.ChabadatLaCosta.com to learn more.

The beauty of OUR Jewish Community is that we offer so many different options that everyone is sure to find something enriching and meaningful. Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

Chabad Weekly Update

Volume 26 Number 8| 14 Cheshvan, 5785 | November 15, '24

B"H

Message from the Rabbi

At the heart of every Chabad House lies the spirit of Abraham’s inn, a place where all are welcomed warmly, given sustenance, and reminded of G-d’s presence in the world. Just as Abraham’s inn was a beacon of monotheism and ethical living in an idolatrous world, Chabad Houses around the globe serve as sanctuaries of light and faith in a world too often darkened by antisemitism and hostility.

Today, Chabad Houses stand as symbols of Jewish pride and resilience. Our open doors embody an unwavering commitment to share the beauty of Jewish life and Torah values, regardless of the circumstances. In cities where antisemitism looms, a Chabad House is a reminder of Abraham’s legacy—a place where fear and hatred are met with love and learning.

The influence of a Chabad House extends far beyond those who walk through its doors. Like Abraham’s inn, the mere presence of these institutions in a city radiates a powerful message of unity, kindness, and the steadfast presence of Jewish life. By boldly upholding Torah values in every corner of the globe, Chabad helps to foster a more compassionate and understanding world, bringing us closer to an era of peace and brotherhood that Abraham first envisioned. In an era where antisemitism seeks to divide and destroy, Chabad Houses stand as fortresses of faith and unity.

May we soon witness the arrival of Moshiach, when all forms of hatred and antisemitism will be eradicated, and the world will be filled with peace and Divine light.

Not only will there be a full buffet of Chinese favorites, there will also be games and lots of fun!

Kiddush Sponsor – ADDITIONAL SPONSORS SOUGHT

The Kiddush this week is being sponsored by Rabbi Yeruchem and Rebbetzin Nechama Eilfort in honor of the Yarzeit of David Eilfort, Dovid ben Zev, may his memory be a blessing.

It is also being sponsored by an anonymous donor.

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE
Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

One People with One G-d, One Torah, and One Land

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

The election is finally over.

Baruch Hashem! What a tremendous relief! And no, I am not referring to any particular race or ballot measure passing or failing. Rather, I have come to face each subsequent election cycle more apprehensively than the last.

Is it just me, or does each successive election seem to be more contentious than the last? The level of hysteria, rhetoric and hyperbole goes north, while the level of mutual respect, and (dare I say it?) love, declines.

Yes! I am speaking to YOU. Each of us is mutually responsible for each other and if a negative is detected, it is up to us to address it and work on improving it. How? By modeling behavior that is appropriate, instructive, and inspirational.

We recently began our yearly cycle of “living with the times, the Weekly Torah portion.” As such we are currently “living with” our beloved Patriarchs and Matriarchs. Personally, I absolutely adore this part of the yearly narrative. I continue to be profoundly inspired by the lovingkindness of Abraham and Sarah, the intense spirituality and self-refinement of Isaac and Rebecca, and of the nation-building under the most challenging of circumstances of Jacob and Rachel, Leah, Bilhah and Zilpah.

Our Mothers and Fathers left us a legacy of feeling responsible not only for each other, but for the world at large. They demonstrated, through their actions, how to make a positive impact on the world.

Was their mission an easy one to accomplish? Not at all! In fact, it was fraught with difficulties and tests. But somehow they managed to transform those tests into opportunities for growth and catalysts to accomplish real, positive change in their surroundings.

That ability and drive is found in each of us, it is in our DNA. It is why the Jewish people are born activists. It is why we continually feel the need to challenge the status quo, to not rest until we are satisfied that even the poorest stranger among us is properly cared for. But having the drive is not nearly enough. It behooves us to channel that drive, directing it in positive paths. An unchanneled drive, like a river that has overflowed its banks, is dangerous and destructive.

No, we must combine our drive with discretion, differentiating between worthy endeavors as opposed to destructive pursuits. In this case, good intentions are not enough. We must learn to judge the tree by the wholesomeness of the actual fruit it produces. If our driving energy leads us to burn down buildings, or to dehumanize those who think differently, we can rest assured that we are on the wrong path.

We must walk the narrow line of respecting everyone, and tolerating dissenting opinions, while at the same time remaining true to the ideals, ethics, and morals, of the Torah. We must always take the high road.

We see this approach modeled by our Patriarchs and Matriarchs. The world of politics, which is by definition divisive, should not be our driving motivation on a daily basis. The purpose of an election is to create one out of many. The many voices weigh in, and then, when the votes are counted and the majority found, we rejoin with each other as one people to work towards a better world. We must ascribe to all good intentions, not only when we agree, but especially when we disagree.

Interestingly, the Torah does not tell us Abraham’s feelings towards the ascension of Avimelech to the throne. Abraham concerned himself with other things – bringing Heaven down to earth knowing that immersion in politics would hinder his true calling.

Now, let us reinvigorate our devotion to G-d, to His Torah, to His Land, and to His People, and create One from the many!

Shabbos Parshas VaYeira

Kings II 4:1 -37.

In this week's Torah reading, G‑d promises a child to Abraham and Sarah, despite childless Sarah's advanced age. This week's haftorah describes a similar incident that occurred many years later — the prophet Elisha assuring an elderly childless woman that she will bear a child.

The  haftorah discusses two miracles performed by the prophet Elisha. The first miracle involved a widow who was heavily in debt, and her creditors were threatening to take her two sons as slaves to satisfy the debt. When the prophet asked her what she had in her home, the widow responded that she had nothing but a vial of oil. Elisha told her to gather as many empty containers as possible — borrowing from neighbors and friends as well. She should then pour oil from her vial into the empty containers. She did as commanded, and miraculously the oil continued to flow until the last empty jug was filled. The woman sold the oil for a handsome profit, and had enough money to repay her debts and live comfortably.

The second miracle: Elisha would often pass by the city of Shunam, where he would dine and rest at the home of a certain hospitable couple. This couple even made a special addition to their home, a guest room designated for Elisha's use. When the prophet learned that the couple was childless, he blessed the woman that she should give birth to a child in exactly one year's time. And indeed, one year later a son was born to the aged couple.

A few years later the son complained of a headache and died shortly thereafter. The Shunamit woman laid the lifeless body on the bed in Elisha's designated room, and quickly summoned the prophet. Elisha hurried to the woman's home and miraculously brought the boy back to life.

If you are able to give a few hours of your time, it will make another person's day that much better!

Below please find a partial list of some of our current offerings. If you have never come by before pick an item or two and try it out. If you have already tried an item or two find another one that sounds interesting and give it a whirl. “Connection” – that is the name of the game and that is precisely what you will find here!

Message from the Rabbi

In a world where challenges abound, it’s easy to fall into the habit of playing the victim, to attribute failures to forces beyond our control, or to throw up our hands and give up. Our forefather Abraham could have done just that. His life mission—to share the belief in One G-d with a world steeped in idolatry—came at a tremendous personal cost. He faced persecution, exile, and even a death sentence. Yet, Abraham never pointed fingers, complained, or gave up.

Instead, he lived his beliefs fully and persistently, even under the threat of death. For Abraham, martyrdom wasn’t the goal; bringing G-d’s presence into the world was. He knew that every moment he continued his mission was a moment of victory over darkness. This refusal to give up, to play the victim, set the foundation for the Jewish people.

Today, we face our own challenges. Like Abraham, we inherit a resilience that defies circumstances. Giving up simply isn’t in our DNA. Our purpose is to bring light and hope, no matter how dark the world may seem. We refuse to be victims—our mission is far too important for that.

Kiddush Sponsor – ADDITIONAL SPONSORS SOUGHT

The Kiddush this week is being sponsored by Miriam Reisman in memory of her late mother-in-law, Esther Chaye Reisman.

It is also being sponsored by Beverly Galperin and family in memory of Misha Galperin and Sofiya Margolina.

Shabbos Parshas Lech Lecha

Isaiah 40:27-41:16.

The haftorah for this week discusses Abraham's journey to the land of Canaan at G‑d's behest, and touches upon Abraham's miraculous battle against the four kings, both of which are described in this week's Torah reading.

The prophet Isaiah addresses Israel's complaint: ""My way [of serving  G‑d] has been ignored by the Lord, and from my G‑d, my judgment passes [unrewarded]."

Isaiah reminds Israel of the Creator's greatness. The time will come when "He will give the tired strength, and to him who has no strength, He will increase strength. Youths shall become tired and weary, and young men shall stumble, but those who put their hope in the Lord shall renew [their] vigor, they shall raise wings as eagles; they shall run and not weary, they shall walk and not tire." Nevertheless, "there is no comprehension of His wisdom," and as such, at times we cannot understand why He chooses to delay the reward of the righteous.

The  haftorah then turns its attention to the idolatrous nations of the world. Isaiah reminds them of Abraham's greatness, how after arriving in  Canaan he pursued and defeated four mighty kings. "The islands saw and feared; the ends of the earth quaked." Nevertheless, the nations who witness these miracles did not abandon their ways. "The [idol] craftsman strengthened the smith, the one who smoothes [the idol] with the hammer strengthened the one who wields the sledge hammer; the one who glues its coating says, 'It is good,' and he strengthened it with nails that it should not move..."

G‑d promises the Jewish nation to reward them for their loyalty to G‑d. "Do not fear for I am with you; be not discouraged for I am your G‑d. . . Behold all those incensed against you shall be ashamed and confounded; those who quarreled with you shall be as naught and be lost."

FUNDRAISING & VOLUNTEERING
Giving & Helping Opportunities

New Mitzvah Opportunity

Bikur Cholim of SD Volunteers Needed!

There are a number of patients at UCSD La Jolla that have come from Israel to receive transplants here. They need our help!

Bikur Cholim of S Diego is a community organization helping the sick with care packages, visitation, driving spouses to and from the hospital, etc.

If you are able to give a few hours of your time, it will make another person's day that much better!

To get involved, sign up at www.BikurCholimSD.com
