Dear Friends,
When Moses first encountered the burning bush, his initial reaction was to flee. He recognized that it was a revelation of the Divine in this world, and he was not sure it was meant for him—a human being—to experience.
G-d’s first words to Moses were, “Remove your shoes for you stand on holy ground.” He did not tell him to avoid the revelation of spirituality in this world, but that with the proper approach—removing shoes, in this case—anyone can experience and benefit from G-dliness.
Like everything in the Torah, this serves as a lesson for us today. With the correct attitude and preparation, we too can be privy to Divine revelation within the physical world that we inhabit. We just need to remember not to run away.
And the more we bring G-dliness into this material world, the sooner we will experience the ultimate revelation with the coming of Moshiach!
Shabbat shalom,

End of Year Appeal
Dear Friends,
Please allow me to begin by stating how very grateful we are to count you as a friend and member of our community! Regardless of whether you are able to join us on Shabbos, for classes, or send your child to our Hebrew school, or you are connected via virtual means, you are why we are here. Our highest calling is to be your connection to Judaism, to the Almighty. That is why we do what we do.
Baruch Hashem, our amazing community has enabled us to fulfill our mission for over 30 years. G-d willing, we are just getting started! In fact, our mission is expanding, as this year we are seeking the support to get started on our Foundation Project in a meaningful way (see below). Our Foundation Project will allow us to use our first floor for early childhood programming, teen programming, senior programming, as well as provide additional space for offices and other critical needs.
As we enter the last month of the secular year we begin our focused fundraising time. We partner together so we can operate on a firm financial footing. Our year over year donations are down by more than 33%, due to the pandemic. Despite the pandemic and the economic downturn we have not decreased our programming, actually, quite the opposite is true.
I am well aware that you are awash in appeals from other worthy causes. Our hope and prayer is that Chabad at La Costa can figure prominently in your giving plans this year. Supporting your spiritual home accomplishes so much! We will double and redouble our outreach activities, our support and religious services.
Your gift is literally the gift of spiritual life to so many.
Can you help us achieve our end-of-year financial goals? Will you help make this fundraising season fruitful?
From the bottom of my heart I am asking to you please give (securely) via our website: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate, or send a check to Chabad at La Costa, 1980 La Costa Ave., Carlsbad, CA 92009.
Many people choose to donate appreciated stock. Or maybe you have some real estate you wish to donate to maximize your tax deductions? Some people even donate their car, which helps us.
If you have already made your “Giving Tuesday” / End of Year Campaign gift please consider this letter an additional thank you.
G-d bless you with happiness and health!
Kiddush Sponsor(s)
This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored by Avi and Carrie Rossenfeld in honor of “Tradition!” (Hum a tune from ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ here). Everyone is welcome to participate.
Speaking of Traditions….
This week’s Kiddush will be a Chinese Buffet worthy of the Sum-Yummy-Food Dynasty! It is a time-honored tradition for the Jewish people to enjoy Chinese food at this time of year. The exact source of this tradition is not known, however, it is something we can really dip our chopsticks into. Something we do know is that this is a Kiddush you will not want to miss as it will include:
Roasted Duck
Lo Mein (chicken, beef or tofu)
Asian Slaw Salad
Fortune Cookies
And so much more!

Covid Protocols - We continue to pursue best practices.
Masks should be worn by everyone INSIDE the Shul. We are asking everyone’s cooperation and sensitivity to the concerns of others in this matter. Those who are uncomfortable are welcome and encouraged to enjoy services in the Breezeway.
No Masks Required in the Breezeway or During Meals
Frequent Handwashing/Sanitizing, especially before visiting the buffet
Social Distancing is to Maintained
PLEASE DO NOT COME IF YOU ARE FEELING SICK OR HAVE BEEN EXPOSED TO SOMEONE WITH COVID!
Security Protocols
Everyone is Subject to Search
No Firearms (We have a well-defined security plan in effect and any unauthorized firearms could create confusion and actually reduce security).
Backpacks Prohibited
All Bags Subject to Search
Soup and Challah - NO - Soup & Challah This Week
We are always seeking additional volunteers to help deliver Soup and Challah. If you can help with this beautiful Mitzvah please respond to this message. Thank you and G-d bless!
We wanted to extend a very special thank you to Carrie Rossenfeld for her help every week!
We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. Sometimes we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!
Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. If you are ready, willing, and able to assist please respond to this message or contact the Rebbetzin to volunteer ASAP. G-d bless you!
If you can help with deliveries, reach out to Kayla or Nechama.
Please note that all food is prepared and delivered using recommended safeguards.
Sponsors Appreciated (And Needed)
These are extraordinary times many people are reaching out for help and, Baruch Hashem / thank G-d, we are HERE to help! ‘We’ means YOU and US, TOGETHER. It is an amazing partnership that we have!
A very special thank you goes out to our “Super Sponsor” Channah Hale who has continuously stepped forward helping us to maintain this service!
We are extremely grateful to those who have reached out to help fund us, enabling us to serve others. Thank you to our amazing volunteer drivers - you can volunteer to deliver Soup and Challah!
Note About Sponsorships
You may have noticed that we seek multiple sponsors for the Kiddush, Challah, Soup, and Torah classes. We do this because we need to find ways to cover our budgetary shortfall that has been caused by the coronavirus. The donations coming to the shul have been dramatically reduced. We greatly appreciate those of you who are still supporting us! G-d bless you! We greatly appreciate your understanding as we seek ways of propping up the income necessary to keep things afloat. Your ideas about additional income streams are likewise greatly appreciated!

Living with the Times - Shemot – Names (Exodus)
The Springboard Effect
by Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort
This week’s portion is titled “Va’Yechi,” which means And He Lived. The portion begins by discussing the final 17 years of the life of Jacob, third, and in many ways greatest, of the Patriarchs. It is ironic that the portion that talks about Jacob’s death is called, “And He Lived.”
By considering this irony we can deduce the Torah’s definition of life.
Jacob had endured a life full of hardships, often at the hands of those who should have been sources of love and comfort. His evil twin Esav was overcome with a homicidal rage directed against him. His uncle Lavan found thousands of ways to swindle him. His daughter was raped and he faced annihilation by hostile neighbors. His son Judah left the family in shame and two of his grandsons died tragically. His beloved son Joseph disappeared without a trace. His son Shimon was taken as a prisoner and his youngest son Benjamin was likewise taken away.
All’s well that ends well.
In the end, however, things seem to turn out well for Jacob and his family. While Jacob was on his death bed his children affirmed their belief, in Almighty G-d. In His infinite kindness G-d had previously appeared to Jacob assuring him that even the impending exile and oppression that would befall his family in Egypt would end on a happy note and indeed was for a positive purpose. Somehow suffering is more tolerable when one knows that a huge benefit will be derived therefrom.
How is it possible to define the final years of Jacob’s life, years spent in Egyptian exile, as the best years?
The answer is that when one has a moral code and the life goals of Jacob, it is entirely possible. Before bringing the family down to Egypt, Jacob had sent Judah ahead to prepare the Land of Goshen, which is where the Israelites would live. How did Judah prepare Goshen? The Talmud explains that he established a Yeshiva, an academy where Torah would be learned by the Children of Israel. Interestingly, the Talmud states that the Divine Presence, known as the Shechinah in Hebrew, accompanies us into exile. And while in exile the place where the Shechinah can be most readily experienced is in the environs of the Torah and its commandments. When we study Halacha, Jewish Law, we immerse ourselves in G-dliness and are actually enveloped by the Divine Presence!
Jacob understood that although he would be leaving his ancestral home he would nonetheless remain close to G-d. When this spiritually-conducive atmosphere is added to the fact that he now would have his entire family around him, and that they all had wisely and righteously chosen to follow his path in the service of G-d, Jacob was able to experience profound contentment. He then knew that his life had been a success, despite (or perhaps because of) all of the difficulties.
This lesson is critical for every one of us. We are in the midst of an unprecedented pandemic, which has wreaked havoc on the patterns of life to which we had become accustomed. Nevertheless if we can find the self-discipline to remain focused on the purpose of our lives, we will still achieve a true life, as defined by Torah. We will live life filled with meaning and joy! We will therefore be in a joyous state of mind and then be able to successfully transform the darkness of the world into light. And that mission will be fully accomplished with the speedy arrival of our righteous Moshiach!
Wishing everyone a happy and HEALTHY Shabbos!
Haftarah of Parshat Va’Yechi
I Kings 2:1-12.
In this week's haftorah, King David delivers his deathbed message to his son and successor, Solomon, echoing this week's Torah reading that discusses at length Jacob's parting words and instructions to his sons.
King David encourages Solomon to be strong and to remain steadfast in his belief in G‑d. This will ensure his success in all his endeavors as well as the continuation of the Davidic Dynasty. David then goes on to give his son some tactical instructions pertaining to various people who deserved punishment or reward for their actions during his reign.
The haftorah concludes with David's death and his burial in the City of David. King Solomon takes his father's place and his sovereignty is firmly established.
This week’s portion is titled, “Shemot,” which translates as, “Names.” It is the first portion in the second book of the Torah, the Book of Exodus. The name of a portion is always indicative of its content and the same thing goes as far as the name of one of the Books of the Torah. In this case we can therefore assume that the theme of the entire book is hinted at in its name, which incidentally is, “Names.”
Of course we all can understand that the name Exodus makes a lot of sense relative to the content of this book, as the story of the exile and redemption from the Egyptian slavery are detailed – particularly in the first few portions. But how is the theme of names demonstrated?
The great classical commentary Rashi begins his explanation of the portion by teaching that although we were already told the names of the Children of Israel who relocated to Egypt in the final portion of the book of Genesis, nonetheless the Torah repeats the names now to demonstrate G-d’s great love of the Tribes. When someone is very dear his/her name is often repeated. The Midrash relates that the Tribes were compared to stars, which are taken out and called by name by the Almighty.
It turns out that the names assigned to us by our parents are mirrors into our souls. They are not merely superficial garments, but instead are indicative of our essence. In fact, our names touch our essence, as is evidenced that when calling one’s name can even help revive someone who has passed out. This is especially true when speaking about the Tribes of Israel whose names are explained in the Torah. Their parents were extraordinary people who were blessed with Divine Inspiration. Our tradition tells us that our parents were also given a measure of Divine Inspiration when they named us!
When the Jewish people moved to Egypt they were installed in a fine area known as Goshen. They were under the protection and patronage of the righteous Joseph, who was Viceroy of Egypt. But things changed after the last of the Tribes passed away. Pharaoh enslaved the Jews and gave them back-breaking labor. By then the Egyptian culture had already managed to infiltrate the Jewish people. Many Jews embraced all things Egypt with a couple of notable exceptions.
We are taught that the Jewish people kept their Jewish names, and it was partly due to this loyalty to their essential identity that they merited to be redeemed from servitude and triumphantly led out to freedom – ultimately leading to receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai.
It is this idea that also helps us understand why the Egyptian exile was necessary to begin with. The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous memory, explains that the exile was meant to bring out the best in our people. When we are tested and have to overcome difficulties we reach inwardly and grasp onto our most profound inner strength. We hone our skills and sharpen our convictions. This combination is meant to bring out the best in us. The lower we go the higher we ultimately will reach, which I call, “The Springboard Effect.” Interestingly, we now understand that our names reflect this inner essence, this inner strength.
The takeaway for us, during these dark days of the final exile, is for us to get in touch with our essence. We should proudly wear our Judaism ‘on our sleeves,’ and use our Jewish names. We should be mindful that G-d loves us – more intensely than words can adequately describe – and that is why we must go through the exile experience. Yes, it is for our good. The more strongly we hold onto our Jewish identity, the quicker we will achieve the purpose of everything, which is the immediate arrival of our righteous Moshiach!
Wishing everyone a happy and HEALTHY Shabbos!
Haftarah of Parshat Shemot
Isaiah 27:6–28:13; 29:22–23.
This week’s haftorah parallels the week’s Torah reading on many levels. One of the parallels is the message of redemption conveyed by Isaiah—“and you shall be gathered one by one, O children of Israel”—that is reminiscent of the message of redemption that G d spoke to Moses at the burning bush, a message that Moses then communicated to Pharaoh.
The haftorah vacillates between Isaiah’s prophecies concerning the future redemption, and his admonitions concerning the Jews’ drunken and G dless behavior. Isaiah starts on a positive note: “In the coming days, Jacob will take root, Israel will bud and blossom, filling the face of the earth . . .” He mentions G d’s mercy for His nation, and the measure-for-measure punishment He meted out upon the Egyptians who persecuted them. And regarding the future redemption: “You shall be gathered one by one, O children of Israel. And it will come to pass on that day that a great shofar will be sounded, and those lost in the land of Assyria and those exiled in the land of Egypt will come, and they will prostrate themselves before the L rd on the holy mount in Jerusalem."
The prophet then proceeds to berate the drunkenness of the Ten Tribes, warning them of the punishment that awaits them. “With the feet they shall be trampled, the crown of the pride of the drunkards of Ephraim . . .”
The haftorah ends on a positive note: “Now Jacob will no longer be ashamed, and now his face will not pale. For when he sees his children, the work of My hands, in his midst, who shall sanctify My name . . . and the G d of Israel they will revere."

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.
Membership
NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.
If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!
We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!
Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.
We can help.
Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today". Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!
Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.
Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.
We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed
PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.
THANK YOU for your cooperation!
Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul
We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.
Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.
Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.
Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.
If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

Tzedakah news –
Ordinarily, individuals who elect to take the standard deduction cannot claim a deduction for their charitable contributions. The law now permits these individuals to claim a limited deduction on their 2021 federal income tax returns for cash contributions made to certain qualifying charitable organizations. Nearly nine in 10 taxpayers now take the standard deduction and could potentially qualify to claim a limited deduction for cash contributions.
These individuals, including married individuals filing separate returns, can claim a deduction of up to $300 for cash contributions made to qualifying charities during 2021. The maximum deduction is increased to $600 for married individuals filing joint returns.
Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.
