Message from the Rabbi

Forgiveness is a major topic these days. We sometimes find it hard to see how and why we should find it within ourselves to simply wipe away our grievances.

This week’s Torah portion has the key to forgiveness. In it we read how G-d forgave the people of Israel after they made a golden calf and served it. Despite all that they had done, they were still His children, and He still loved them. These inherent qualities were stronger and deeper than their sins.

Perhaps we must do the same. When looking to forgive, we must first seek to find that space where we are one with all others. We are all creations of one G-d, linked by our souls, which are a literal part of G-d.

A Thought from the Rabbi This week the portion is titled “Ki Tisa,” When You will Count, is read. In this portion the story of the Golden Calf is related. Needless to say this was a particularly heinous sin – coming just a few weeks after receiving the 10 Commandments from Hashem Himself! How could the people who achieved such a lofty status in such a short time have made such a terrible blunder?! They had witnessed Hashem’s majesty and power with their own eyes – and now they turn around and ascribe power to a Golden Calf. What were they thinking? Numerous explanations are given by our righteous commentaries. First things first; technically it was the “Eruv Rav” the ‘Mixed Multitude’ that worshipped the idol. Who were the Mixed Multitude? They were a group of Egyptians who saw what had happened in Egypt and therefore decided to join with the Children of Israel as they left Egypt. In modern terms they were ‘bandwagoners’ intent to attach themselves with the winning team. The sin was that the Jews did not proactively remove the evil from their midst and drive out the Eruv Rav when they began politicking for an idol. But still, how could the Jews have tolerated idol worship after witnessing for themselves the destruction of the Egyptians and their gods? Some explain that the Satan (the evil inclination) fooled the people showing them a vision of Moses after death. They thought Moshe had died and so they despaired and their faith abandoned them. Others explain that the Golden Calf was created in a supernatural way, something that confused the people. This week during the Portion of the Week class (Wednesdays at 7:30pm) a different explanation was offered based upon the teachings of Mystical Judaism (Kabbalah). In short this explanation posits that it was a set-up, and G-d Himself was in on the plan! G-d allowed and even set the course for the people to do this horrific sin (which is the greatest desecration of His name!) because He had a plan. What was the Almighty’s plan, pray tell? The plan was that the first tablets – carved with Hashem’s own ‘hand’ as it were - should be shattered so that a second set of tablets – fashioned by Moses – should come into existence. By doing this G-d was demonstrating the superiority of Teshuva/Repentance. As the Talmud tells us, “In a place where a Baal Teshuva (one who has sinned and returned to G-d) stands, even someone who has never sinned (Tzaddik Gamor) cannot stand.” For the power of Teshuva is greater than any other Mitzvah in the Torah! Think of it; G-d sacrificed His own honor and glory to demonstrate the power of the sinner’s return. If this does not amply demonstrate the Creator’s love for His creation (us), nothing does! The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family. We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation. Shul Etiquette Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family. At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul. It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like. Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services. We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Message from the Rabbi

Did you know that we recently celebrated a birthday? Yes, it was the birthday of Moses, the wise and faithful shepherd who led our people out of Egypt and gave us the Torah. It’s also the day that he passed away—exactly 120 years later. In fact, it’s because Moses lived that long that we Jews customarily wish each other to live 120 years.

But longevity alone is not enough. Like cash, time must be well spent. Think of Moses. He began his career as national leader at the ripe old age of 80. When his peers were deep into retirement (and possibly zipping around the pyramids in golf carts), Moses knew that there was so much more for him to do.

Like Moses, let us make sure that we make the most of our time on earth, regardless of our age and stage.

A Thought from the Rabbi This week we read the portion of ‘Titzaveh’, which means “And you shall command.” In it the Jewish people were commanded to fashion the ‘Bigdei Kehuna’, the Priestly garments. We find that the regular priests wore four garments while the High Priest wore eight. Each of the garments not only had very specific requirements as far as materials used in fashioning them, but each even had specific areas of life where they were meant to bring atonement to the nation. During this week’s Torah portion class (Wednesdays at 7:30pm) we asked the question, “How can the High Priest wearing a certain garment bring an atonement to the people?” For instance, the turban was meant as an atonement for haughtiness/arrogance. How can the High Priest wearing a special turban bring atonement for the sin of arrogance? Are we so shallow as to think that by doing something so superficial as wearing a specific garment we can influence the Almighty, like by pushing certain buttons on a computer we can complete certain tasks? Of course this question can be extended to apply to all of the commandments that we do – do we actually believe that by doing ‘A’ we can influence G-d to do ‘B’? There are probably several valid answers to our question, but first things first; Yes! We in fact believe that by following the commandments we do indeed affect Hashem’s dealings with this world. This is a monumental concept – I find it to be the ultimate empowerment for us. It is Hashem’s definitive statement that we and our actions make a difference! We and our actions matter! We are here for a divine purpose. For some reason (His kindness and love), Hashem chose to allow us to influence Him. I think, however, there is something more subtle also going on here. Perhaps the High Priest’s wardrobe is meant to influence us. In other words, we should be mindful that human hands fashioned the garments in fulfillment of a divine mandate. And that when something is man-made and worn by man it too serves a divine purpose. It reflects the mode of creation chosen by the Creator – a partnership as it were – where despite Hashem being perfect and complete in all ways He chose/chooses to allow us to partner with Him. Why? For our benefit, of course. Imagine the inspiration felt by the nation when they were able to see the High Priest dressed in the ultimate of royal garb and their concurrent knowledge that his good offices were representing them. Visual reminders are extremely powerful and held in high esteem in our tradition. How does this apply to us today, after all, we have no High Priest in our midst? While it is true we don’t have the Kohen Gadol, or the Holy Temple where he served, we do have a royal dress code that still applies. We have the laws of modesty that, our rabbis tell us, reveal that even a layman is of royal birth. Our Portion tells us that what we wear matters. It behooves each and every one of us, men, women, and children to abide carefully to the laws of modesty. Our bodies are sacred vessels that contain “A portion of living G-dliness,” our souls. It is therefore to be treated with respect and dignity, never flaunted or abused. Instead of allowing a very secular industry – modern fashion design – to influence us, we should seek to influence it and our neighbors. When we dress appropriately/modestly we serve as a beacon of light in an otherwise dark world. People can see through our wardrobe that we have a higher purpose than purely animalistic pursuits. We can see even when it comes to what we wear on a given day, our choices make a difference! Message from the Rabbi

There they were, a ragtag group of former slaves camped out somewhere in a vast desert. And what were they doing? Collecting gold and silver to construct a home for G-d.

It was a transformational moment. Instead of being victims of fate, they were benefactors of the divine. Never again would they be enslaved in the same way. Sure, we Jews would have some terrible times during the millennia that followed. But even as our bodies were chained and beaten, our souls could not be enslaved.

Because, somewhere inside, we knew that we were building a home for our creator. Yes, the process is rough and awfully painful, but we know that we are we are on a mission, and someday we will look back and laugh. May it be soon.

Chabad Weekly Update Yarzeit Minyan Needed A special Minyan is needed Tuesday, February 16^th at 6:30pm, Wednesday February 17^th at 8am and at 5:15pm. The Wednesday morning Minyan will be the toughest to make. A Thought from the Rabbi This week’s thought is dedicated to the great Shliach (emissary of the Rebbe), Rabbi Yehoshua Binyamin Gordon, of blessed memory, who passed away this week. Rabbi Gordon, together with his many partners including Rabbi Mordechai Einbinder (may he live and be well), built a veritable Jewish empire in the San Fernando Valley. When Rabbi Gordon arrived there was very little in the way of an organized Jewish community. Today the San Fernando is flourishing with dozens of shuls, Jewish schools, Kosher restaurants, and a thriving and growing Jewish community. Not only has the number of observant Jews grown exponentially in that area, but the number of Jews observing Mitzvot has likewise grown exponentially. This phenomenon is a direct result of Rabbi Gordon and his team’s efforts. Their ability to accept their fellow Jews with love and understanding changed the Jewish landscape in a dramatic way. The amazing array of programs – perfect for bringing the relevance of Torah to those who maybe didn’t previously fully appreciate it - speaks volumes about his dedication and talent. The light he created is nothing less than spectacular, miraculous even. This week’s Torah portion is titled “Terumah,” which means donation. In it we see Moshe make an appeal to the Jewish people to donate the materials for the Tabernacle (the Mishkan, which was the mobile sanctuary used by the Jews to serve G-d until the building of the Holy Temple more than 400 years later). In addition to the Tabernacle itself they donated the materials needed for the furnishing of it. It was a building campaign of epic proportions. And how did the people respond to Moses’ appeal? The response was overwhelmingly positive! The Torah tells us that they gave everything necessary “and more.” Interestingly not everyone got in on the giving bonanza. The commentaries tell us that the Princes of the Tribes, who were fabulously wealthy, had planned to make-up whatever was lacking after the people responded to the appeal. They would fill in any gaps that remained. Next thing they knew there were no gaps to fill and they, despite their well-meaning approach, were left out in the cold. The Talmud tells us, “Zerizim Makdimin Li’Mitzvot,” that it is a positive attribute to respond to Mitzvah opportunities with alacrity. If we keep this approach in mind we can see that the Tribal Princes missed out on an opportunity to participate in perhaps the greatest building campaign in all of history, because they did not act with alacrity. Incidentally, the story has a happy ending, for ultimately the Almighty had ‘mercy’ on them, as they felt terrible having no tangible portion in the Tabernacle, and allowed them to donate the precious stones for the breastplate worn by the High Priest. They meant well! Nonetheless, their intentions do not change the fact that they did not hasten to actually participate in G-d’s building project. The moral of this story is something that informed the Rebbe’s, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, approach to Jewish activism. The Rebbe would point out a need and instruct his Chasidim to fill that need. The Rebbe said there is no time to undertake ‘studies of the problem’ and then form committees who through ponderous planning and analysis would then begin to start to maybe act to address the need if enough funding could be found. No indeed! The Rebbe used a powerful metaphor to illustrate his approach; if one sees someone drowning, G-d forbid, one immediately jumps in the water to save him! There is no time to do anything else. Do we feel the urgency to build G-d’s house in our wounded world? What are we doing to save millions of our fellow Jews from assimilating? What are we doing to save our own children/grandchildren/nieces/nephews/cousins etc. from assimilating!? No, we can’t count on being able to totally change someone’s entire life through one conversation or letter – though it has been known to happen. But what we can do, what we must do, is immediately encourage those we come in contact with to put on Tefilin, light Shabbat candles, send their children to Jewish schools, keep Kosher, etc. We must learn from the story of the Tribal Princes and act with alacrity! G-d’s palace will be built, one way or another. The question is what will our part be in the process? Bottom line: GET BUSY! On Monday we marked the yahrtzeit of Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka Schneerson, wife of the Rebbe, of righteous memory. Go to your favorite Jewish bookstore and look for a biography of this special woman. You’ll be hard-pressed to find one. A few pamphlets with some stories shared by those who knew her are the extent of what you’ll find, if you are lucky.

Rebbetzin Chaya Mushka.jpg As daughter of a world-famous Jewish leader, and wife of a man who has been called the most influential Jew in modern times, she could easily have taken center stage. Yet she chose to remain behind the scenes, quietly living a life of modesty, dignity and devotion.

And we are left with a legacy short on details but rich in inspiration. Like the Rebbetzin, we can make sure that whatever we do will be with humility and simplicity.

A Thought from the Rabbi This week we read Parshat ‘Mishpatim’, which means Judgments. The great classical commentator Rashi points out the beginning of our portion starts with the Hebrew letter “Vav,” (And) which indicates that the contents of this portion are directly connected and even a continuation of last week’s reading. Last week we read the 10 Commandments; the single most important series of passages in the entire Torah and the basis of our way of life as Jews. This week’s portion is dramatically different. In Mishpatim we learn many laws that can be described as the ‘nitty gritty’ of our system. Certainly they seem, on the surface, like they are a far cry from the vaunted heights reached in the narrative of the 10 Commandments. Minute details in the most disparate of subject matters are covered, as opposed to the soaring over-arching concepts we encountered last week. The Hebrew letter ‘Vav’ actually means ‘hook’ in English as it connects words and concepts. In fact, the holy Baal Shem Tov, taught that the first letter of the Hebrew Alphabet, the Alef, is comprised of of a Yud (representing G-d) on top, a Yud (representing the Jewish people) on bottom, and the Vav (representing the Divine Commandments) connecting them. Similarly, last week’s lofty concepts are connected with this week’s ‘nitty gritty,’ as both portions are essentially to being Jewish. How often do we hear well-meaning people speak about the lofty overarching concepts found within Judaism while neglecting the details of our day-to-day existence? This portion tells us that the Almighty is also found in the details. If we want and are looking we can encounter the Creator while doing business or building our homes. We can bring G-d into our lives and thereby the world through our actions. In fact, if we are motivated we can experience G-d whenever and wherever we look!
