This week we begin reading a new book of the Torah, Vayikra, which is also the name of the first portion in the book. The majority of the Book of Vayikra discusses the laws regarding the various sacrificial offerings brought in the Temple on a regular basis.
Today, in the absence of the Temple, we are taught that prayer was instituted in place of the offerings, and whenever a Jew prays it is as if he or she has offered the choicest sacrifice to G-d.
Prayer today occurs in both communal and private settings, similar to offerings that were brought on behalf of all of Israel and some that were brought by individuals for personal reasons. During the course of the pandemic, many of us have come to realize that prayer indeed happens in both settings, and even when we are not able to congregate as a community, we can still communicate with G-d through prayer.
G-d willing, with the end of the pandemic near, we will all once again be able to come together and pray, thanking G-d for His kindness, and pleading for the ultimate redemption with Moshiach!

The Shabbat before Passover is called Shabbat HaGadol, the Great Shabbat. On Shabbat HaGadol the Rabbi is mandated to review the laws of Passover. This year Shabbat HaGadol occurs next week, Erev Pesach. In such a case the Rabbi instead speaks about Passover preparation on the previous week, meaning THIS week.

VaYikra – And He Called
What’s in an Alef?

This week we begin the third of the Five Books of Moses, the Book of Leviticus, known in Hebrew as VaYikra. The portion begins by G-d calling to Moses, inviting him to enter the newly-completed Tabernacle, also known as the Tent of Meeting. The purpose of this meeting was so that the Almighty could explain the array of sacrifices that the Jewish people were commanded to bring for numerous different reasons. For instance there was one type of sacrifice brought for sins, another for peace offerings (to offer thanks), daily communal sacrifices, special sacrifices for Shabbat and Holidays, and many other reasons as well.
The fact that this portion and Book of the Torah come third, meaning in the middle of the Five Books, and since it begins with the letter Vav, which means ‘And’, thusly connecting it the previous Books of the Torah, is an indication that this Book is the central theme of the Torah. These sacrifices are what it is all about.
Lest anyone make a mistake it behooves us to understand the sacrificial service. The idea that one can sin and then sacrifice an animal in his place to make things ‘all better’ is absolutely false. Rather, we know that the animal that was sacrificed represented the inner animal each of us contends with, as we all have appetites and tendencies that are not G-dly. We harness our animalistic behaviors so that they may be used in the service of G-d instead of only serving ourselves, and we have thereby elevated a part of ourselves. We have revealed G-dliness where before there was only mundanity. When someone brought his or her sacrifice, in order for it to be effective it had to be brought with the right intent, known as Kavanah in Hebrew. Then, and only then, did the desired transformation of the individual take place.
G-d determined upon a system that was meant to reveal the profound connection between the Creator and His choicest creation; humanity. When conveying these laws to Moses, G-d first invited Moses to ‘meet’ with Him. Our Sages tell us that is what is indicated by the use of the word VaYikra, and in fact was the method G-d used whenever He was going to communicate with Moses – He didn’t just start communicating. This is a term of endearment, as G-d Almighty loved communicating with His beloved Moses.
The great commentator Rashi contrasts this with a similar word that was used when G-d communicated with the evil Bilaam – who sought to curse and destroy the Jewish people. Regarding Bilaam the Torah states that VaYakar, which means, “And He happened upon.” The way described indicates that it was almost like happenstance, and there was something akin to a measure of embarrassment for the Creator in His ‘meeting’ with Bilaam.
One of Bilaam’s many flaws was his tremendous arrogance. In this regard he was the polar opposite of our hero Moses. Moses, in fact, was so humbled by his personal invitation to speak with G-d, that our Sages tell us, he used a small Alef at the end of VaYikra to demonstrate that he was humbled by the fact that G-d spoke to and through him.
Incidentally, Alef, the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, is quite instructive. Alef is connected to the word Alufo, which means The Chief (a reference to the Creator). We can also learn from the way the Alef is comprised, it has a Yud at the top, a Yud at the bottom, which are connected by a line. The Yud on top represents G-d, whose name begins with a Yud. The Yud at the bottom represents the Jewish people, whose name (Yisroel or Yehudi) begin with an Yud. And the line connecting G-d above and us below is the Torah and its commandments, and/or our faith in G-d.
May we continue to look to our great Moses as an example for all of us! May we continue to be mindful that the Torah and Mitzvot, which he brought to us, are our lifeline and connection to G-d!

Haftarah Parshat VaYikra
Isaiah 43:21-44:23.
This week's haftorah starts with a rebuke to the Israelites for abandoning the Temple's sacrificial service. Sacrifices are the dominant topic of the week's Torah reading, too.
The prophet Isaiah rebukes the Israelites for turning away from G d and refraining from offering sacrifices, turning to idolatry instead. G d exhorts the people to return to Him, promising to forgive their transgressions, as is His wont.
The prophet then mentions the futility of serving empty idols which may be crafted by artisans but "neither see nor hear nor do they know…" The haftorah concludes with G d's enjoinder to always remember Him and to return to Him.

As is consistent with new governmental guidelines services will be held in our sanctuary with air filters, social distancing, masks, and hand sanitizing.
While here masks are required at all times, social distancing guidelines are followed, and frequent hand washing/sanitizing is encouraged.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).
The donation is only $500 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Pesach/Passover
FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - Tuition Free Hebrew School
Due to the economic hardships created by the pandemic we will be offering Tuition Free Hebrew School this year. Families are struggling to make ends meet, but we cannot allow the children to suffer. We are offering two options – In-person learning (outdoor and indoor classes, socially distant, masks on), and virtual learning. Please respond to this message for further information. We are the only synagogue in the county making such an offer! Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.
Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Currently Distance Learning with Zoom! Our students want to be here!

Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
