This Shabbat, we read Parshat Hachodesh, the special Torah portion that prepares us for the upcoming festival of Passover. In it, G-d commands the Jewish people to sanctify the new month and establish a calendar. This mitzvah of Kiddush Hachodesh—declaring the new moon—was the very first commandment given to the Jewish nation as a whole. Why was this mitzvah chosen to inaugurate our collective journey as G-d's people?
The answer lies in the practical, transformative nature of mitzvahs. The sanctification of time is a distinctly human task. G-d entrusts us with the power to shape time, setting the rhythm of Jewish life through festivals and rituals. This mitzvah reminds us that creation’s purpose is not merely spiritual reflection but action—infusing holiness into the mundane.
This theme continues in preparation for Passover. The mitzvahs of the holiday—removing chametz, eating matzah, and recounting the Exodus—are tangible, hands-on actions. They ground our lofty ideals in the physical world, teaching us that faith and values must manifest in deeds.
As we prepare our homes and hearts for the Festival of Liberation, let us remember that the ultimate purpose of creation is to bring G-dliness into this world through mitzvahs. By engaging in practical mitzvahs, we fulfill our mission to be partners in perfecting the world and sanctifying every aspect of our daily lives.
May our preparations pave the way for the ultimate joyous Passover, this year in Jerusalem!

ANNUAL TWO-PART PASSOVER LECTURE SERIES
Rabbi Eilfort will again be offering his two-part lecture series titled, “Passover 101: Practical Preparation & Seder Insights” on Tuesday, April 1st and Tuesday, April 8th, from 7 – 8:30pm. The classes will take place at Chabad and will also be available on Zoom and Facebook Live. There is no charge to attend. If you are interested in participating please respond to this message.
Coastal Chabads will be offering a full array of program for the upcoming holiday of Pesach / Passover including two Community Seders (one in Chabad at La Costa and the second one at Chabad of Encinitas) and Holiday Services. Our informative Passover brochure is scheduled to be mailed this week with all the relevant information.
The Shul will have special, hand-baked Shmurah Matzah (from the Ukraine) available for sale at $20 per pound. Also, you can also grant the rabbi your power of attorney to sell your Chametz (leavened products that are forbidden even to be owned over Passover).

Hebrew School News – HEBREW IMMERSION!
We started a curriculum where we will go through all of the Alef Bet and learn about something that we are grateful for, starting with the letter of the week.
The first week was א אור . Alef for Ohr- light. And we made lanterns.
The second week was ב בית. Bet for Bayit- house and we made Birchat Habayit to hang in our homes.
Then we learned about Geshem- rain and made rain in a bottle!
We talked about Dibbur for daled - Language.
We are up to Hey for Horim - Parents. We made cards for out Ema and Abba.
Vav focused on infants - Valad and how we have grown.
Chanukah is here!
Zayin for Zemer - music/song. We sang Karaoke
Chet for Chaver - Friend. We skateboarded with Yaakov.
Tet for Taam - Taste and Reason. We learned the Brachot for food.
Yud for Yom Tov - Holiday and Yad - Hand

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview
The Time of Our Freedom: Passover in the Modern World

Pesach/Passover is almost here! Jews the world over are deeply engaged in their preparation for this unique and consequential holiday. Our sleeves are rolled up and our mops are in motion, as we expunge every last crumb of leavened products, called Chametz in Hebrew, from our homes, businesses, and even cars.
Why are we so obsessed with the removal of innocent crumbs? Well, when we learn what Chametz represents we quickly realize that it is not so innocent. In fact, as we take a deeper dive into understanding this interesting Jewish law, we will find that it is the very key to achieving true freedom.
Allow me to explain.
Our Rabbis tell us that Chametz represents our egos, which cause a person to be arrogant and angry, judgmental and stand-offish. Our ego stands in the way of achieving true closeness with our Creator and with our fellow human beings. An egotistical person is utterly self-centered. He is a narcissist, for he feels himself to be the be all and end all of the created universe.
The arduous process of removing the Chametz physically from our possession, is meant to spur us on to removing the self-consuming ego from our characters.
Think about it: when one is completely egotistical, he views everyone as being inferior to him, and that ultimately, he is owed everything. Well, what happens when he doesn’t get everything or when everyone doesn’t bow to him giving him his due? He becomes angrier and less happy. He cannot possibly be satisfied with his life. In short, he has become a miserable wretch, all due to his outsized ego.
The Torah, the depository of divine wisdom, commands us (as opposed to suggesting to us) to make sure we don’t own even a crumb of Chametz during Pesach.
But if we have removed the leavened foods, most prominently bread, what then will serve as the staple of our dietary existence? Enters the Matzah, the flat bread, known as Poor Man’s Bread and as the Bread of Faith.
Once a year for a bit longer than a week we radically adjust our diets, which helps us internalize this message. We scour our homes, but also ourselves, and rid ourselves of every vestige of Chametz.
Then, and only then, are we ready to celebrate the Festival of our Freedom. We have been freed of our inner Pharoah, that jaundiced ego that had us convinced of our own infallibility, of our superiority, of our entitlement. Since it has been muted there is room for our inner G-dly voice to be heard. It is this G-dly voice that tells us to be grateful for everything we have, to treasure our fellow human beings, and to celebrate our loving G-d who embraces us, enlightens us, and who leads us to the Promised Land.
“Wait one minute!,” you may demand. If Chametz is so terrible why then are we able to resume eating it after Passover? Isn’t Chametz Treif (non-Kosher)? If Chametz represents the ego, and we know that it is Kosher to eat it, other than on Passover itself, we must drill down into the Jewish view of the ego.
Ironically, the ego is not considered completely evil all the time. In fact, we strongly believe that the ego has an essential purpose in our universe. It is the ego that helps keep us behaving in an appropriate way, even when we don’t feel ourselves to be in the Presence of the Almighty. One is walking along and sees someone drop a wallet filled with money. He may be tempted to keep the ‘found money’. But his ego will pipe up and say, “It is beneath your dignity to keep something that belongs to someone else.” Perhaps one is with friends, and they begin badmouthing a colleague, his ego is quick to respond and to say to him, “you are not an innuendo-peddling do nothing who sits in the corner of the market selling junk!” “Lashon Harah – evil gossip – is beneath you!”
We are not meant to view ourselves as worthless beings who are only worthy of being stomped upon. No indeed. We are meant to view ourselves as children of the King of Kings, and as such we must behave appropriately.
We see that a healthy, balanced ego is actually an essential part of a healthy psyche. It is the holiday of Passover that reminds us to reign in those egos. Cleanse them. Refine them. And then we are ready to redeploy them in a positive way.
Now we are truly free. And now we are truly happy. We are ready, willing, and able to share the story of our national redemption with our friends, family, and most especially our precious children. They will see our faces shine as we join ourselves with our ancestors and community in the holy rituals of this singular holiday. They will remember, and they will emulate this when they have houses and families of their own.

Shabbos Parshas Pikudei – Parshas HaChodesh
Ezekiel 45:18-46:15.
This special haftorah is a prophecy regarding the Paschal Offering that will be brought during the Messianic Era, reflecting the theme of the Hachodesh Torah reading—Moses' command to the Israelites in Egypt to prepare and bring the Paschal lamb.
This haftorah is part of Ezekiel's prophecy regarding the third Holy Temple—its structure, inauguration and some of the practices that will be observed therein.
The haftorah begins with a description of the various sacrifices that will be offered during the Temple's seven-day inauguration ceremony, and then mentions that on the 14th of Nissan we shall bring the Paschal offering.
Much of the rest of the haftorah is devoted to the sacrifices that will be brought by the "leader," and prescribes his entry and exit from the Temple.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul
We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.
Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.
Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.
Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.
If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
