Message from Chabad.org

As we approach Passover, we’re reminded of a powerful truth that has carried the Jewish people through every chapter of our history: our strength lies in our unity. Despite the many attempts to destroy us, what has ensured our survival is not just resilience, but our deep connection to one another. This is something our enemies have never fully understood; no matter what methods are used against us, as long as we remain united, we endure.

The Rebbe was a passionate believer in this idea. He saw Jewish unity as the most powerful response to antisemitism and worked tirelessly to bring Jews closer together, regardless of background or level of observance. Around Passover, this message came to life in a very practical way. Rather than leaving an empty seat at the Seder table as a symbol of past suffering, the Rebbe encouraged adding a seat, and then going out and finding someone to fill it, someone who might otherwise be alone.

He also initiated a global effort to ensure that Jews everywhere could experience the holiday, sending shmurah matzah to communities far and wide. Today, that vision continues, as Seders are hosted across the world and matzah is shared with hundreds of thousands of people.

These are not just symbolic gestures. They are real, tangible expressions of unity. And when we keep that unity at the center of our lives, we send a clear message to ourselves and to the world: Am Yisrael Chai. The Jewish people live on, strong and unbreakable, because we stand together.

Please reach out to us if you still need matzah or a Seder.

Wishing you a happy and kosher Passover,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Passover – A Time of Redemption, Personal and Communal

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort Director of Chabad at La Costa

Passover, known in Hebrew as Pesach, is here. No doubt, people have been busily preparing for the preeminent holiday on the Jewish calendar for some time already. It is not the type of festival where we can just show up and say, “Here I am!” This particular holiday takes intense preparation including a significant amount of sweat equity in order to be properly observed.

We rid ourselves, internally and externally, of every vestige of Chametz (leavened products like bread or pasta), including internal leavening, which is related to anger, arrogance, and conceit. When every last crumb has been expunged from within and without, we are ready to celebrate the Festival of Our Freedom properly. It is then, and only then, that the spiritually nourishing qualities of the Matzah can be properly digested into our bodies, and thus positively affect our souls. This is why Matzah is known as the bread of faith, as it feeds our faith in the Almighty.

There is a phenomenal outcome to this process – we experience true liberation. The wicked and cruel internal Pharoah, with whom we all contend, is eradicated and no longer serves as an impediment to our service of G-d nor our service of each other and the world around us. The bonds of slavery are broken, and we are truly free to be happy.

Yes, happy.

A slave cannot be happy (slavery really is not all it’s hyped up to be). Only someone who has asserted control over his or her evil impulses is free of that which truly oppresses us and holds us back.

The Torah, in its wisdom, has given us the direct path to fulfillment.

That is not to say that we don’t have external enemies who oppress us. We all face financial pressures, health concerns, family and communal challenges, not to mention other nefarious forces that seek to do us harm.

The correct approach is for us to take control of those things that we can control, our inner enemies, while doing everything in our power to minimize the threat posed by our external enemies. The foremost ally we have in this eternal battle is our Creator. We feed our faith in His power and Providence. Ironically, we graciously accept even those things that hurt us, even while simultaneously fighting them.

Overcoming these seemingly contradictory forces is precisely what makes Jewish people live their lives as Jews.

At this moment, as Israel is fighting an existential war against the nazis of our time, we have the ability (and obligation) to reflect on some of the most foundational concepts in our faith. We will come out of the other side victorious, and we will have grown greater as individuals as well as communally.

This then is our path forward. We use the key granted us by our loving Father in Heaven to free ourselves of our own constraints, achieving personal redemption. We share this gift with our brothers and sisters of our people by opening our hearts and our Seders to them. We strive to fill the seats around the table, and if they are filled, we add some more. We offer abundant blessings to each other. Our individual efforts in this regard will lead to our personal and then communal redemption, as momentum will be built until it becomes an irresistible force.

Wishing you and your family a Kosher and joyous Passover!

Haftorah for Shabbos Parshas Tzav

Jeremiah 7:21-28; 9:22-23.

This week's haftorah touches on the subject of sacrifices, the main topic of the week's Torah portion.

G‑d tells the prophet Jeremiah to rebuke the Jewish people, saying that His primary intention in taking their forefathers out of Egypt wasn't the sacrificial offerings, rather in order that they observe the commandments. But despite the fact that G‑d repeatedly dispatched prophets to admonish the people, "They did not obey nor did they incline their ear, but walked according to [their] own counsels and in the view of their evil heart, and they went backwards and not forwards." G‑d further informs Jeremiah that the people will also not hearken to these words that he will speak to them now.

The  haftorah concludes with G‑d's admonition: "Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom, nor the strong man boast of his strength, nor the rich man boast of his riches. But let him that boasts exult in this, that he understands and knows me, for I am G‑d Who practices kindness, justice and righteousness on the earth; for in these things I delight, says G‑d."

Giving & Helping Opportunities

Enhanced Security

We have a wonderful security guard who keeps a watch over us while we are in services.

Our number one priority is to ensure the safety and security of our shul family. While we have a robust security system in place, we have gone to the added expense of hiring a uniformed, armed guard, who is with us, watching over us, in addition to our internal security team. This added layer of security is expensive at a cost of $300 per week.

Please help us by donating to the security of our shul community by following this link: www.chabadatlacosta.com/donate. The cost is approximately $300 per week. All donations are tax-deductible.

How to Make a Donation (or Payment)

We would be nowhere without the generous support of our community. Please know that your support is profoundly appreciated!

There are many ways to donate besides checks and cash. Following, please find a list of the various other ‘platforms’ that are available for secure donations that go directly and entirely into the synagogue account (even though they say Nechama's name).

1. PayPal  [email protected]  or PayPal.me/Neilfort

2. Venmo @Nechama-Eilfort

3. Cashapp $nechamae

4. Zelle (Bank of America)   [email protected]

Volunteering

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FIFTH year! It was sponsored by Channah Hale and now carried on in her memory.

We are at the point that we need NEW volunteers to drive and deliver food packages around the area.

Please consider making this a part of your Friday routine. Volunteers pick up a few containers of soup and bags of challah at 3:00pm and delivering them to the door of the recipients. Volunteers also get soup and challah!

New Mitzvah Opportunity

Bikur Cholim of SD Volunteers Needed! Message me if you would like me to share the spreadsheet for visitation hours.

There are a number of patients at UCSD La Jolla that have come from Israel to receive transplants here. They need our help!

Bikur Cholim of S Diego is a community organization helping the sick with care packages, visitation, driving spouses to and from the hospital, etc.

If you are able to give a few hours of your time, it will make another person's day that much better!

To get involved, sign up at www.BikurCholimSD.com

The Foundation Project  - City Approved Plan

We are raising funds that will be used towards completing our basement. This project will include a TEEN LOUNGE, MULTIPURPOSE ROOM, a LIBRARY, OFFICES, STORAGE SPACE, BATHROOMS, and more. Call Rabbi to inquire about available dedications. The money we raise also goes towards scholarships for Hebrew School students, our Challah and Chicken Soup program, and all of our ongoing expenses.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Send a personal email to [email protected] to schedule an appointment today.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to   [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Membership

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!

We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!

Belonging to a Jewish Community is not only gratifying and fulfilling it is also extremely important, for within the community one finds a place to connect with G-d and one’s soul, a place of learning and spiritual enrichment, a great source of friends, a place to bestow one’s Jewish legacy upon his or her child/ren, and so much more. Check out   www.ChabadatLaCosta.com to learn more.

The beauty of OUR Jewish Community is that we offer so many different options that everyone is sure to find something enriching and meaningful. Below please find a partial list of some of our current offerings. If you have never come by before pick an item or two and try it out. If you have already tried an item or two find another one that sounds interesting and give it a whirl. “Connection” – that is the name of the game and that is precisely what you will find here!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

Message from Chabad.org

Although Purim is now behind us, its message lingers. The story recorded in the Book of Esther of a vulnerable Jewish minority in ancient Persia facing a terrifying decree is not just a tale we retell once a year. It is part of our living memory. The threat and fear were real, and yet, the Jewish people endured and emerged stronger.

In our own time, the Purim story feels less like ancient history and more like a reminder of a recurring pattern. Enemies rise, rhetoric intensifies, and still, somehow, the Jewish people are here. Purim reminds us that Jewish survival is not accidental. Even when G-d’s name is absent from the Megillah, His presence is felt in every twist and turn. Protection does not always come with miracles that split seas; sometimes it unfolds quietly, through unity and resilience.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, consistently spoke about Jewish pride and Jewish security in the same breath. He urged us never to hide who we are, never to apologize for our identity, and at the same time to take strength and security seriously, spiritually and physically. Faith, he taught, is not passive. It empowers action and responsibility.

As we move forward from Purim, may its joy translate into confidence in our people and in the enduring promise that the Jewish story continues.

Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Haftorah for Shabbos Parshas Ki Sisa

I Kings 18:20-39.

In this week's haftorah, Elijah the Prophet demonstrates the worthlessness of the Baal, just as Moses chastised the Israelites for serving the Golden Calf, as discussed in this week's Torah reading.

The background of this week's  haftorah: King Ahab and Queen Jezebel ruled the Northern Kingdom of Israel, and encouraged the worship of the Baal deity as well as other forms of idolatry. To prove that G‑d alone is in control and provides sustenance, Elijah decreed a drought on the kingdom—no rain fell for three years. When Ahab then accused Elijah of causing hardship for the Israelites, Elijah challenged him to a showdown. He, Elijah, would represent the cause of monotheism, and 450 idolatrous "prophets" would represent their cause. Ahab accepted.

The haftorah begins with Elijah, the Baal prophets, and many spectators gathering atop Mount Carmel. Elijah rebuked the people of Israel, uttering the famous words: "How long will you hop between two ideas? If the L-rd is  G‑d, go after Him, and if the Baal, go after him."

Elijah then stated his challenge: "Give us two bulls and let them [the Baal prophets] choose one bull for themselves and cut it up and place it on the wood, but fire they shall not put; and I will prepare one bull, and I will put it on the wood, and fire will I not place. And you will call in the name of your deity, and I will call in the name of the L-rd, and it will be the G‑d that will answer with fire, he is G‑d."

The people agreed to the challenge, and the prophets of the Baal were first. The prophets' entreaties to their god went unanswered. Elijah taunted them: "Call with a loud voice, for you presume that he is a god. [Perhaps] he is talking or he is pursuing [enemies], or maybe he is on a journey; perhaps he is sleeping and will awaken..."

As evening approached, Elijah took center-stage. He built an altar, laid his offering upon it and surrounded it with water. "Lord, the G‑d of Abraham, Isaac and Israel," he declared. "Today let it be known that You are G‑d in Israel and that I am Your servant, and at Your word have I done all these things. Answer me, O L-rd, answer me, and this people shall know that You are the L-rd G‑d..."

A fire immediately descended from heaven and consumed the offering, as well as the altar and the surrounding water. "And all the people saw and fell on their faces, and they said, "The Lord is G‑d, the L-rd is G‑d."

FUNDRAISING & VOLUNTEERING

The Kabbalah of Meaning

Jewish wisdom for finding the purpose that connects all parts of life

Life is busy. What connects it all? Join this six-session course to discover Judaism’s timeless approach to meaning in life. You’ll hear answers to some of life’s most fundamental questions: What is meaning? Where does it come from? And if we have it all, why do we seek more?

You’ll gain tools to see the meaning in the routines, relationships, and rhythms of time that shape your life. Discover the purpose in what you’ve achieved and in what lies ahead.

This course will satisfy the continuing education requirements of doctors, psychologists, social workers, LMFTs, and LMHC/LPCs in most states.

WINTER 5786—6 LESSONS

Incredible Cases in Rabbinic Responsa

What Jews asked, how rabbis answered, and the stories their letters tell

Listen in on the questions your ancestors asked across history as they paid taxes, got married, fled war, and celebrated Passover in secret.

What do their questions reveal about how they lived? What do these sages’ answers reveal about the process of applying Jewish law?

Join this six-session course to explore the fascinating world of rabbinic responsa. You’ll see the tools Jewish tradition offers for living by timeless values in a world that never stands still—and come face to face with raw Jewish history.

This course will satisfy the continuing education (CLE) requirements of lawyers and legal professionals.

SPRING 5786—4 LESSONS

For All Humankind

How Judaism’s universal values can help us build better lives and societies

What values enable a good life? What values shape a just society? Join this four-part course to discover Judaism’s ethical message for all people.

Explore foundational Jewish texts to discover the spiritual path our tradition offers every individual. You’ll explore how these values guide family life and uncover the essential role of education. Plus, understand what it takes to achieve Judaism’s vision of a more perfect and peaceful world for all humanity.

SUMMER 5786—4 LESSONS

Foundations of Freedom

The Jewish ethics that shaped America’s founding

In time for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this four-session course reflects on the Jewish ethics, ideas, and values that inspired and influenced America’s founders—and still shape our government and society today.

Was it always self-evident that all people are “created equal”? What is the “pursuit of happiness”? What inspired America’s system of checks and balances? And looking ahead, what steps can we take to build a just and united future?

This course will satisfy the continuing education (CLE) requirements of lawyers and legal professionals.

This week’s Torah portion describes the oil used to light the menorah in the Holy Temple. The Torah says the olives had to be crushed to produce the purest oil. The Talmud takes that image and applies it to us: just as olives release their finest oil when pressed, we often reveal our deepest strengths under pressure. It’s a powerful metaphor, but also a dangerous one. It’s easy to say, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” It’s much harder to actually live with this message. Judaism is not blind to that pain, but neither do we glorify suffering as an ends of its own. The question is not why life is hard, but what can help us endure when it is. The Torah adds a detail that changes everything: the crushed olives were brought to Moses. Moses wasn’t just a lawgiver; he was described as a shepherd, attentive to each individual. When the people felt broken, he didn’t lecture them about resilience; he lifted them. The same was true generations later with Mordechai and Esther in the Purim story. They didn’t explain away the danger; they led by example and gave the people faith and a path forward. Crushing alone does not make us great; it’s the connection that does. When we attach ourselves to something higher, we discover reserves of light and strength we didn’t know we had. May we soon see a world where no one is crushed at all, and where our light shines without pressure, with the coming of Moshiach! Shabbat shalom,

Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

An Important Note about Kiddushes –

The policy of the shul is to allow multiple sponsors for every Kiddush unless it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or something similar (like a 50th wedding anniversary etc.).

There is no such thing as an exclusive Kiddush sponsor.

This is our policy for numerous reasons, not least of which is the fact that Kiddush sponsorships help generate much-needed income for our community and encourages more people to participate.

We thank you for your support and understanding!

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE

Rabbi's Thoughts and Haftarah Overview

Haftorah for Shabbos Parshas Zachor

In connection with the holidays of Purim and Passover, our sages instituted that four special readings be read from the  Torah on four different Shabbatot in addition to the regular Torah portions. When the special  Parshat Zachor is read the Shabbat proceeding  Purim, as is the case this week, we read a special haftorah instead of the above one.

I Samuel 15:2-34.

This week's special haftorah discusses G‑d's command to destroy the people of Amalek. This to avenge Amalek's unprovoked attack on the Israelites that is described in the Zachor Torah reading.

Samuel conveys to King Saul G‑d's command to wage battle against the Amalekites, and to leave no survivors—neither human nor beast. Saul mobilizes the Israelite military and attacks Amalek. They kill the entire population with the exception of the king, Agag, and they also spare the best of the cattle and sheep.

G‑d reveals Himself to Samuel. "I regret that I have made Saul king," G‑d says. "For he has turned back from following Me, and he has not fulfilled My words."

The next morning Samuel travels to Saul and confronts him. Saul defends himself, saying that the cattle was spared to be used as sacrificial offerings for G‑d. Samuel responds: "Does G‑d have as great a delight in burnt offerings and peace-offerings, as in obeying the voice of G‑d? Behold, to obey is better than a peace-offering; to hearken, than the fat of rams. . . . Since you rejected the word of G‑d, He has rejected you from being a king."

Saul admits his wrongdoing and and invites the prophet to join him on his return home. Samuel refuses his offer. "The Lord has torn the kingdom of Israel from you, today; and has given it to your fellow who is better than you." Samuel then kills the Amalekite king.

FUNDRAISING & VOLUNTEERING

5. Personal credit card     chabadatlacosta.com/donate

6. Join our Legacy Circle - see below

Those who are looking to effectively promote their business and at the same time support this important community resource are invited to become sponsors for only $50 per month (that's per MONTH, not per week). Call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891 to get your message out there.
