When we were kids, we would joke about ostentatious people who thought they were so holy, they confused themselves with Swiss cheese. Indeed, in Chabad tradition there is no one quite as vilified as the chitzon, someone who puts on an ostentatious show of holiness that doesn’t quite reflect his or her inner world.
Yet the second of this week’s Torah portions, Kedoshim, opens with the command to “be holy, for I am holy.” What does that actually mean?
As you can imagine, there are multiple interpretations. One that resonates with me is quite simple. G‑d made the entire universe and sustains all of creation every single minute, yet he hid His fingerprints so well that people doubt His very existence. When we do an act of kindness, we can do the same thing. Not only should we not make a big deal about ourselves, we should shy away from recognition and self-congratulation.
Sure, it may be the lonelier path—but we will be in the company of G‑d Himself. And if that isn’t holy, I’m not sure what is.

Parshi’ot Acharay Mot / Kiddoshim – After (the) Death / Be Holy
By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort
This week we read a double portion, Acharay Mot / Kiddoshim, which translates as After (the) Death / Be Holy. The first of the two portions picks up the narrative which was discussed two weeks ago in the portion of Shmini – The Eighth (Day).
By way of a brief synopsis we read how the Tabernacle was formally inaugurated on the eighth day after being set up and taken down by Moses and the service practiced within it for a full week. On the eighth day Aaron the High Priest took over the duties and miraculously the Divine Presence inhabited the structure, demonstrating that the Jewish people had achieved success in reconnecting with G-d after the sin of the Golden Calf. Tragically, however, Aaron’s two eldest sons, Nadav and Avihu, brought on unsanctioned Incense Offering into the Holy of Holies and died on the spot. Some commentaries explain that they actually chose death, in that the rapturous love they felt for the Almighty caused them to embrace spirituality by completely abandoning the physical world.
Then, mysteriously, the Torah seems to change the subject completely and discuss the laws of Tzara’at and ritual impurity before again mentioning the tragic deaths of Aaron’s sons. And from the subject of death the Torah then goes on to list a dizzying array of Mitzvot, which are all included in the portion that openly calls for the Jewish people to emulate G-d’s defining characteristic of being holy. Just as He is holy, so too are we to be holy by fulfilling all of these commandments.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous memory, explains the positioning is no accident and that there are profound lessons to be learned. We have previously mentioned that Nadav and Avihu made a mistake. As holy as they were and as much as they thirsted for the divine, they missed the point. The Midrash tells us that G-d created the world in order that He should have a dwelling place below in this world. G-d specifically wanted His Presence revealed here, in the mundane physical world, and that is the purpose of creation.
The previous two portions as well as our two portions of this week emphasize again and again that we are to turn our energies into being involved in the physical world. And that by so doing, we are revealing the purpose of all of creation. We are actually empowered by the Almighty to serve as His partner, so to speak. He gave us this opportunity because of His love of us and His kind and generous nature. G-d’s ultimate purpose is that we should likewise treat each other and the world around us with abundant lovingkindness and generosity. We do so to serve Him; not for our own pleasure or benefit, not even for spiritual benefits, but we want to give our Father in Heaven nachas – enjoyment.
Let us embrace with joy and vitality the awesome role that G-d has created for us. Let us be holy by paying our workers on time, by helping even our enemies when they are lost, by having fair weights and measures, and by making sure we attribute all of our blessings to their true Source.
Wishing everyone an uplifting, joyous, and HEALTHY Shabbos!
Haftarah of Acharei Mot - Kedoshim
II Kings 7:3-20.
This week's haftorah discusses the story of four men stricken by tzara'at, a skin ailment caused by sins — one of the main topics of this week's Torah reading.
Haftorah's backdrop: King Ben-Hadad of Aram besieged Samaria (the Northern Kingdom of Israel). The resulting famine was catastrophic, reducing many to cannibalism. King Jehoram of Israel wanted to execute the prophet Elisha, considering that his prayers could have prevented the entire tragedy. Elisha reassured the king: "So has G‑d said, 'At this time tomorrow, a seah of fine flour will sell for [merely] a shekel, and two seahs of barley will sell for a shekel in the gate of Samaria.'" One of the king's officers present scoffed at the prophecy: "Behold, if G‑d makes windows in the sky, will this thing come about?" Elisha responded, "Behold, you will see with your own eyes, but you shall not eat there from."
Now, four men suffering from tzara'at dwelled in quarantine outside the city. They too were hungry, victims of the famine. They decided to approach the enemy camp to beg for food. They arrived only to find a deserted camp. For "G‑d had caused the Aramean camp to hear the sound of chariots and the sound of horses, the sound of a great army. And they said to one another, 'Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us.'" The entire enemy army fled, leaving behind their tents, horses, donkeys and provisions.
The four men went to the city and reported their findings to the gatekeepers who, in turn, informed King Jehoram. Though originally thinking that this was an ambush planned by the enemy, the king sent messengers who confirmed the miracle. The people swarmed out of the city and looted the enemy camp, thus breaking the famine and fulfilling Elisha's prophecy.
And the officer? The king placed him in charge of the city gates. He was trampled to death by the rampaging crowds — after seeing the fulfillment of the prophet's words...

Guest Speakers for Shavuos Announced!
We are excited (beyond excited, actually) to announce that Rabbi and Mrs. Mendel and C. Rochel Duchman will be joining our community for Shavuos as guest speakers! The Duchmans have visited us before and the reaction was over-the-top due to their infectious enthusiasm, warmth, and sincerity (not to mention the stories that they can share about Rabbi E’s childhood).
They will both be sharing their unique insights and fascinating stories of what it was like growing up in the presence of their distinguished and highly accomplished families and how those experiences informed and continue to inform their lives to this day.
Rabbi JJ Hecht (Rebbetzin Duchman’s father) worked very closely with the Rebbe on establishing the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE), an organization critical in establishing the ‘Release Time’ program and founded Hadar HaTorah, a Yeshiva specifically for Yeshiva students who started their educational careers at a later age. Rabbi Hecht and his wife Rebbetzin Chava (may she live and be well) also established Camp Emunah, the first Chabad overnight camp for girls, an incredibly successful institution (which our own Rebbetzin Nechama attended for many years). Rabbi Hecht often translated the Rebbe’s talks, particularly when the Rebbe addressed children, and he organized the massive Lag B’Omer parades, where tens of thousands would celebrate together at Chabad World Headquarters, 770 Eastern Parkway. Rabbi Hecht represented the very best of ‘home grown’ Chasidim, as he was born in the good old USofA. He and his Rebbetzin managed to successfully fuse old style Chasidism with modern American culture, and perhaps more importantly, modern American Jews.
Rabbi Mendel Duchman’s father, Reb Yisroel HaLevi Duchman, was a famous Chasid of the Rebbe. His infectious joy and love of the Rebbe inspired and elevated all around him. Rabbi Duchman hailed from a long line of esteemed Lubavitcher Chasidim. Reb Yisroel, as he was affectionately known, made it his business to remain connected to the Rebbe as only a true Chasid can. He went out of his way to always bring good cheer to the Rebbe. He was truly in his element on the holidays of Shmini Atzeres and Simchas Torah. Anyone who had the privilege of attending 770 on those holidays would have the pleasure of seeing Reb Yisroel reach a level of happiness that most of us can only hope for. Reb Yisroel and his Rebbetzin Rochel, may she live and be well, maintained a truly Chasidic home, one where anyone would be made to feel welcome, would be fed, and would hear encouraging words and incredible stories.
Our job is to instill this generation and future generations with the energy and spirit of these giants. No one will be better able to inspire us than Rabbi and Rebbetzin Duchman and it is a great blessing that they will be joining us to share their wisdom, insights, and humor. These two phenomenal people inspired our own Rabbi Eilfort to become an emissary of the Rebbe, and they are literally helping to inspire numerous young people on a weekly basis in the LA area at this time. Hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands, have been positively impacted by the Duchmans and they will be ‘all ours’ over Shavuos!
Grand Re-opening Scheduled!

Over the past fourteen months the shul has been paused numerous times, we have held services in the breezeway, we have discontinues Kiddushes, we have installed high quality (and expensive) air filtration systems, we have worn masks, and we have socially distanced (all per governmental guidelines). Needless to say we will continue to strictly adhere to all legal guidelines as well as the advice of medical experts.
Baruch Hashem, thank G-d, we have maintained a spotless record! No one has become sick here. We plan on keeping it that way.
Now that most of our members have been vaccinated and San Diego has been taken out of the ‘Purple Tier’ we are ready to begin to encourage people to come home to your community. If you have received both vaccines and are in good health it is time.
We are planning a major holiday celebration for the upcoming Yom Tov of Shavuot! We have done this every year (except last year), but this year we will certainly add some ‘umph’ and pizazz! Lavish community meals will be served. We will have a splendid ice cream party (of Biblical proportions)! We will have our customary dairy Kiddush extraordinaire!
Most importantly we will sit together (socially distanced and masked) and daven as a community! We will listen to the 10 Commandments and we will recite the Yizkor Memorial service.
It is time. It will be safe.
We are looking for sponsors who want to invest in and sponsor this incredibly important series of events. This is literally bringing merit to the community and there is no greater Mitzvah. Simply respond to this message for further information.
Shavuot begins on Sunday, May 17th and ends on Tuesday, May 19th. MARK YOUR CALENDAR!
This promises to be our most exceptional and uplifting Shavuot celebrations ever and they won’t be complete without YOU!
Deliverers Needed PRONTO
Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. If you are ready, willing, and able to assist please respond to this message or contact the Rebbetzin to volunteer ASAP. G-d bless you!
Chicken Soup & Challah - We thank our generous sponsors!
Those who live near Chabad at La Costa are welcome to let us know if you want some delicious Challah and/or Chicken Soup delivered to you. There will be Challah and Soup. If you can help with deliveries, reach out to Kayla or Nechama.
Please note that all food is prepared and delivered using recommended safeguards.
Sponsors Appreciated (And Needed)
These are extraordinary times many people are reaching out for help and, Baruch Hashem / thank G-d, we are HERE to help! ‘We’ means YOU and US, TOGETHER. It is an amazing partnership that we have!
A very special thank you goes out to our “Super Sponsor” Channah Hale who has continuously stepped forward helping us to maintain this service!
We are extremely grateful to those who have reached out to help fund us, enabling us to serve others. Thank you to our amazing volunteer drivers - you can volunteer to deliver Soup and Challah!
Note About Sponsorships
You may have noticed that we seek multiple sponsors for the Challah, Soup, and Torah classes. We do this because we need to find ways to cover our budgetary shortfall that has been caused by the coronavirus. The donations coming to the shul have been dramatically reduced. We greatly appreciate those of you who are still supporting us! G-d bless you! We greatly appreciate your understanding as we seek ways of propping up the income necessary to keep things afloat. Your ideas about additional income streams are likewise greatly appreciated!

Need a Minyan?
If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.
Pay-What-You-Can-Membership
We want the membership experience to be positive. We want you to feel GOOD about giving. Yes, we have suggested donations, but you should give what you feel you can afford. If you cannot comfortably give the suggested amount THAT IS OK. If you can give more than the suggested amount, THANK YOU, IT IS APPRECIATED! We love and appreciate your participation, and that is that. Please fill out our Membership form online by logging onto: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/Membership.
Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - NOW

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.
We can help.
Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today". Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!
Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.
Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed
PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.
THANK YOU for your cooperation!
