Dear Friends,
Passover is an eight-day holiday and doesn't end after the Seders. We continue to commemorate the Exodus from Egypt all week, culminating in the last two holiday days, in which we recall the splitting of the sea, and pray for the Ultimate Redemption with Moshiach.
When G-d split the sea for the Jews escaping the Egyptians, we were able to perceive His ability to perform nature-shattering miracles. And when Moshiach comes, we will once again experience such otherworldly miracles.
As the sun sets on the last day of Passover, we have a meal called “Moshiach’s Meal,” where we drink four cups of wine and eat matzah one last time. We do that in anticipation of the Ultimate Redemption, with complete faith that it can and will come any moment!

We are very happy to welcome guests to our beautiful shul and community. A large group of individual families will be staying in the area and will be joining us for services and for meals. Not only are we blessed by fulfilling the powerful Mitzvah of Hachnasas Orchim (Welcoming Guests), income is also generated for our community, which helps us pay our bills. We always treat our honored guests as family, which is exactly the way that we wish to be treated when in someone else’s shul.

Please excuse the uniform nature of this email. I have run out of time and needed to reach everyone right away. We are in a critical situation.
It is Erev Pesach, the Eve of Passover. Traditionally Jews have given Tzedakah at this time of year to help others who are less fortunate. Our annual appeal that went out in last week’s mail has had a minimal response. At the same time we have been sending out food, giving out Passover supplies (including ‘Seder to Go’ kits), and have been working harder than ever to bring meaningful spiritual nourishment to you, our community. We have provided thousands of dollars of emergency relief to people living in their cars, out of work, at risk for losing their apartments, who couldn’t pay for their electricity, or for their prescriptions.
We are burning the wick at both ends – more expenditures and less income.
I am asking for your help now.
I know it is a scary time filled with uncertainty for many.
But I also know that G-d is greater than the coronavirus! I know that He wants us to help each other. I know that this is our opportunity to shine! And I know that the Talmud tells us that Tzedakah saves from death!
These are historical times. Thank G-d, it seems we are through the worst of it but things are still not entirely stable. In a few years we will look back at these events and ask ourselves did we do all that we could do for each other?

Meal of Moshiach – The Holiday of Passover is primarily about our Exodus from Egypt. The Holiday comes to a crescendo on the Last Days of the Holiday (The 7th of Passover and the 8th of Passover). It is specifically on the 8th Day of Passover, known as Acharon shel Pesach, that we commemorate our beloved departed with the recitation of the Yizkor Memorial Service.
Later in the day we enjoy the Se’udas Moshiach, the Meal of Moshiach. The Rebbe taught us that the coming of Moshiach is always on our mind and in our hearts, but as we are transitioning out of Passover it is even more so. We partake of a special meal during which we discuss inspirational thoughts about Moshiach, sing beautiful Chasidic melodies, and close out the holiday on a high note. Everyone is invited to join us for this special celebration on Saturday evening at 6:30pm preceded by Mincha at 6pm.

Living with the Times
Why Jews Celebrate Passover Even While in Exile

We are currently celebrating Passover, the Festival of Freedom, and yet, since the original Exodus and liberation, we have again lost our freedom. The Babylonians destroyed our First Temple, the Romans the Second, and we became a wandering people for millennia.
Even today, the Temple Mount is forbidden to Jewish worshipers. And, as powerfully impressive as the Western Wall may be, it is only a remnant of the glorious Holy Temple that is yet to be rebuilt.
So why do we continue to celebrate the anniversary of our liberation when that very freedom was subsequently lost?
There are those who have suggested: “You can take the Jew out of Egypt (and slavery) … but you can’t take Egypt out of the Jew!”
In other words, the slave mentality has remained ingrained in our national psyche.
Yet, back in the 16th century, the holy Rabbi Judah Lowe argued differently. Known as the Maharal, he was a mystic, halachist, philosopher, and chief rabbi of Prague.
The Maharal writes that not only did the Jews avoid inheriting a slave mentality from Egypt, but the opposite—the Exodus forever changed the inner identity of the Jew.The Exodus set us free, not only physically and politically, but spiritually and psychologically.
The Exodus was not just a one-off historical event, or a fantastic, dramatic story that we retell every year at our Passover Seders. No. The Exodus was a spiritual revolution which changed the mentality, the mindset, the psyche, and the very nature of a Jew forever. Freedom was wired into our national DNA. We are, by definition, a free people, and nothing and no one can ever change that.
And so, the Season of our Liberation is indeed worthy of eternal remembrance.

The Sixth Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, of righteous memory, spiritual leader of Russian Jewry from 1920 onwards, fought the Communists tooth and nail. They were hellbent on eradicating Jewish practice in Russia, but with unwavering commitment he and his chassidim kept Jewish schools, shuls and mikvahs going clandestinely. Many paid with their lives, including both my wife’s grandfathers.
The Rebbe himself was arrested and sentenced to death, but even in prison he remained resolute. Miraculously, his sentence was commuted to 10 years of exile in Kostroma, a few hundred miles from Moscow.
Leningrad, 1927. The Rebbe was on the train about to go into exile. Many hundreds of chassidim came to the train station to bid him farewell. The place was packed with uniformed officers, members of the secret police, and Jewish informants. Yet the Rebbe came out and addressed the crowd. Knowing full well that every word he said would be reported to the Communist authorities, he said:
“May G d be with us as He was with our ancestors; may He not forsake us nor abandon us . . .” Only our bodies went into exile, but not our souls . . . We must proclaim openly before all that with regard to any matter of our faith —Torah, mitzvahs and Jewish custom—it is not subject to the opinion of others, nor can any oppressive force be used against it . . .
. . .This is our request to the Holy One, may He not forsake us nor abandon us. G d should give us true strength to be unintimidated by physical pain, and on the contrary to accept it with joy, so that every punishment we receive for supporting a cheder (Jewish school), for learning Torah, for performing mitzvahs, shall increase our fortitude in the holy work of strengthening Judaism.
We must remember that imprisonment and hard labor are only temporary things, whereas Torah, mitzvahs and the Jewish people are eternal . . .
How powerful! What courage, defiance, and unbelievable faith.
What was the Rebbe’s bottom-line message? Only our bodies can go into exile, but not our souls. The neshama does not go into galut.They may imprison and enslave our bodies, but the soul of a Jew is always free.
Miraculously, after only 10 days in exile the Rebbe was released and permitted to leave Russia. He spent time in Riga and in Poland before arriving in the United States in 1940, where he re-established the center of Chabad until his passing in 1950.
The Rebbe was not only echoing the words of the Maharal; he was living proof.

Which brings me to April 1943, the very last Pesach Seder in the Warsaw Ghetto.
Brave, defiant Jewish fighters courageously fought back against the mighty Nazi war machine from the rooftops, while down below, in the cellars, a Pesach Seder was taking place. They found a white tablecloth to cover the table, and candles. They even managed to bake matzah in the ghetto! Marror they had enough of; there was no shortage of bitterness there.
Can you imagine the child asking the Mah Nishtanah that night?! Some of the Jews at that Seder in Warsaw survived the war. Most did not. But the faith, the courage, the defiance, and the sense of inner freedom to even attempt to hold a Seder in those circumstances is awe-inspiring.
Or how about the Jews who risked their lives to bake matzah in the concentration camps? I knew one of them personally—Reb Yankel Friedman. He joined the holy Klausenberger Rebbe in the dangerous secret mission to bake matzahs inside the camps.
The Klausenberger Rebbe, Rabbi Yekusiel Yehudah Halberstam,4 lost his wife and 11 children in the Holocaust. He survived and ended up in New York, where he rebuilt his family, and his community. Later he moved to Israel and the Laniado Hospital in Netanya is just one of many institutions he built. He was a giant of spirit and inspired many thousands with his indomitable faith under fire.

And that innate freedom of the Jew is likewise embodied in the story of Pini Nahmani. On Thursday, April 2, 1970, an Israeli fighter jet was shot down over Syria. The pilot, 26-year-old Pini Nahmani, was imprisoned in the Al Mazza jail in Damascus. He was later freed as part of a prisoner exchange between the two countries.
Pini wrote about his time in prison. With Passover approaching, he and his two fellow Israelis inmates prepared for a Seder. They scrubbed the floor and painted a Seder plate on a piece of cardboard. They had two Haggadahs and some matzah from the chief rabbi of Zurich.
Boaz Eitan, the youngest, asked the Mah Nishtanah, the Four Questions. They ate matzah and they sang. They sang all their favorite Passover songs; the songs of their youth. They sang so loudly that the prison guards warned them to tone it down or they would be sent to solitary confinement. But they ignored the guards. They felt free and they kept singing.
Pini later wrote that his most memorable and inspirational Seder was the one he celebrated in that Damascus prison.
Stripped of everything, including their dignity, he and his fellow Israelis were determined to remain free men and faithful Jews, despite the torture and the terror. And they did. Miraculously, they lived to tell the tale.

As the Maharal taught, ever since the Exodus, every Jew possesses that innate, unbreakable sense of freedom. This Passover, may we tap into it and let it liberate us from the drudgery and mediocrity to achieve true, inner freedom.

Haftarah for the 7th Day of Passover
II Samuel 22:1-51.
This week's haftorah describes the song King David composed in his old age, echoing the weekly Torah reading, where Moses delivers his parting words to the Jewish nation in song form.
David's song expresses gratitude to G d for saving him from all his enemies. He starts with the famous words, "The L-rd is my rock and my fortress." He goes on to describe the pain and hardships he encountered and reiterates that he always turned to G d in his moments of distress. He recounts G d's reaction to those who tormented him: "The Lord thundered from heaven; and the Most High gave forth His voice. And He sent out arrows and He scattered them, lightning and He discomfited them. . . I have pursued my enemies and have destroyed them; never turning back until they were consumed."
The King attributes his salvation to his uprightness in following G d's ways: "The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands He recompensed me..."
The song ends with David's expression of thankfulness: "Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the nations, and to Your name I will sing praises. He gives great salvation to His king, and He performs kindness to His anointed; to David and to his seed, forevermore."
Haftarah for the 8th Day of Passover
Isaiah 10:32-12:16
This haftarah is a prophecy by Isaiah regarding the messianic time to come. He foretells of “a staff from the shoot of Jesse,” father of King David, upon whom the Divine spirit will rest and who will be able to judge honestly by way of smell.
The prophet tells us that “the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie with the kid goat; the calf and the young lion will graze together, and a young lad shall lead them.”
He continues to describe how G d will gather the exiled Jews from all over the world, to bring them back home to the Holy Land. In the newly constituted Jewish kingdom, the ancient rivalry between Judah and Ephraim will end, and they will join forces to subdue their historic enemies.
At that time, Israel will sing G d’s praises, thanking Him for all that he did and does for them, even that which had once appeared to be punishment but has now been revealed to be goodness in disguise.

Need a Minyan?
If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now
We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today". Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School & C-Kids
Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know. Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul
We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.
Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.
Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.
Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.
If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
