SHABBOS NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
We are Open for Services this Week – And there WILL BE Soup & Challah

Special Shabbos THIS Week

This week we will be celebrating Shabbos Mevorchim, the Shabbos on which we bless the upcoming new month of Iyar. It is our custom to recite the entire book of Psalms (Tehillim) before Shabbos morning services. In fact, the Rebbe once said that if people fully understood and power of saying Psalms with simple sincerity they would never stop saying them! An additional beautiful custom we have is to have a Farbrengen, a Chassidic gathering that includes words of Torah and inspirational songs and stories, which we will do during the Kiddush. Everyone is invited.

This Shabbos afternoon we begin the weekly study of Pirkei Avos – Ethics of Our Fathers – which is traditionally studied on Shabbos afternoon beginning from after Passover until the Shabbos before Shavuos. In Chabad our custom is to continue the study until the Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah. The study of Pirkei Avos, especially during this time, helps us to spiritually prepare to receive the Torah as we work on refining ourselves.

Kiddush Sponsor(s)

This week’s Kiddush is sponsored by the Buenaventuras in honor of their Anniversary and Bernardo's mother's yarzeit, and by the Rodals in honor of Dovid’s birthday! Please join us for Kiddush lunch after services.

Mother's Day Kiddush

We will be honoring our Moms NEXT week with a very special Mother’s Day Kiddush. Mom and Sponsor will be listed in the emailed newsletter.

If you would like to add your mother’s name (or grandmother, or any other special woman) please call Sheila (858.610.0414) or respond to this email so the name(s) can be added to the list. There is a $18 donation per name for up to three and $54 for unlimited names. THANK YOU to all of our participants!

Covid Protocols

We are being extremely careful and are asking the following to anyone contemplating coming:

  1. If you have ANY symptoms of Covid please do not come.
  2. If you have been around anyone who has Covid please do not come.
  3. If your doctor told you to be especially careful please do not come.
  4. If you are concerned/afraid please do not come.
  5. If you are not vaccinated please be extra careful with all above-listed stringencies and wear a mask.
  6. Please maintain social distancing at all times.
  7. Please wash and sanitize your hands regularly, especially before the kiddush.

This is a very difficult situation. We ask for your support and understanding as we do our absolute best in providing a vibrant spiritual home that is SAFE for our community. This means that even if you are not concerned about Covid please be thoughtful about those who are concerned. This means even if you are extremely concerned about Covid do not be judgmental of those who feel they must attend shul to ensure we have a minyan.

We choose to remain a close and loving community.

Soup and Challah - NO - Soup & Challah This Week

We are always seeking additional volunteers to help deliver Soup and Challah. If you can help with this beautiful Mitzvah please respond to this message. Thank you and G-d bless!

We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. Sometimes we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!

Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. If you are ready, willing, and able to assist please respond to this message or contact the Rebbetzin to volunteer ASAP. G-d bless you!

If you can help with deliveries, reach out to Kayla or Nechama.

Please note that all food is prepared and delivered using recommended safeguards.

Sponsors Appreciated (And Needed)

These are extraordinary times many people are reaching out for help and, Baruch Hashem / thank G-d, we are HERE to help! ‘We’ means YOU and US, TOGETHER. It is an amazing partnership that we have!

A very special thank you goes out to our “Super Sponsor” Channah Hale who has continuously stepped forward helping us to maintain this service!

We are extremely grateful to those who have reached out to help fund us, enabling us to serve others. Thank you to our amazing volunteer drivers - you can volunteer to deliver Soup and Challah!

Note About Sponsorships

You may have noticed that we seek multiple sponsors for the Kiddush, Challah, Soup, and Torah classes. We do this because we need to find ways to cover our budgetary shortfall that has been caused by the coronavirus. The donations coming to the shul have been dramatically reduced. We greatly appreciate those of you who are still supporting us! G-d bless you! We greatly appreciate your understanding as we seek ways of propping up the income necessary to keep things afloat. Your ideas about additional income streams are likewise greatly appreciated!

A Word of Torah
Living with the Times

Withdrawal and Return
Based on the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe

Taken from Chabad.orgTaken from Chabad.org

1. The Death of Nadav and Avihu

Our reading begins with the verse: "And the L-rd spoke to Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near to the L-rd and they died" (as related in Leviticus 10, in the Parshah of Shmini). The final words, however present a difficulty. Why does the Torah add "and they died" when it has already said, "after the death of the two sons of Aaron?"

The Midrash, in giving an explanation of their death, cites the following explanations: They entered the Holy of Holies; they did not wear the priestly garments necessary for their service; they did not have children; and they did not marry. Our second question now arises: What is the source of the Midrashic account? Where, in the Torah, are these four faults alluded to?

Further: How can we suppose that Aaron's two sons, Nadav and Avihu, were guilty of sin? The Midrash relates (based on Leviticus 10:3) that Moses said to Aaron, "Aaron, my brother, I knew that the Sanctuary would be sanctified by those who were beloved and close to G d. Now I see that they — Nadav and Avihu — are greater than both of us." If this was so, how could they have sinned?

2. A Fatal Ecstasy

There is a Chassidic explanation that Aaron's two sons did not "sin" literally. Their "sin" was to allow their desire to cleave to G d to mount to such an intensity that they died. Their bodies could no longer contain their souls. Thus the Torah says "when they drew near to the L-rd (with such passion that) they died." And this was counted as a sin! For although a Jew must divest himself of material concerns, at the moment when he stands poised at the ultimate ecstasy of the soul, he must turn again to the work that the soul must do within a physical existence.

It is written in the Ethics of the Fathers (4:22): "Against your will you live." Set against the desire of the soul to rise beyond the world, is its task of creating a dwelling-place for G d within the world. Nadav and Avihu achieved the ecstasy but not the return. This was their sin and the reason for their death. They "drew near to the L-rd and they died." They allowed their spiritual passion override their this-worldly task. They went beyond the world and beyond life itself.

This act lies at the heart of each of the four faults which the Midrash ascribes to them.

They "entered the Holy of Holies," the innermost reaches of the spirit, without thinking of their return to the outer world.

They "did not wear the (priestly) garments." Their concern was to divest themselves of the world and to become purely spiritual. They forsook the necessary "garments" in which the word of G d is clothed, the Mitzvot, the physical actions that sanctify a physical environment.

They "had no children" and "did not marry." That is, they did not fulfill G d's command to "be fruitful and multiply" and to bring new souls into the world. They did the opposite. They withdrew their own souls from the world.

All their faults stemmed from a single misconception: that the Jew draws close to G d by withdrawal instead of involvement. In fact, both are necessary. And that is why, at the point of the year when we are most powerfully taken out of the world — Yom Kippur — we begin the reading of the Torah from these verses, as a reminder of our ultimate task.

3. Entrance and Exit

Rashi explains that the command, "that he (Aaron) come not at all times into the holy place . . . (but) with this shall Aaron come into the holy place," comes immediately after the statement of the death of his sons, to warn that his (and our) service of G d should not be like that of Nadav and Avihu.

A question arises here. Can we really demand of a person at the point of ecstasy, that he return to his mundane role? If his experience is genuine, if he has reached the love of G d "with all your might" and has broken through all barriers of separation between man and G d, can he hold himself back at the very point of union, and re-immerse himself in all the constraints of the human situation? Is there not an emotional incompatibility between the absolute abandonment of a person to G d and a constant vigilance not to go too far?

The answer lies in how a person begins his spiritual journey. If he sets out with the intention of satisfying his own desires, however exalted they are, he will not wish to turn back from his private ecstasy to the needs of the world. But if he sets out in obedience to G d's command, knowing that though "You shall love the L-rd your G d . . . with all your might," nonetheless "He created (the world) not to be empty, he formed it to be inhabited" (Isaiah 45:18), then within his ecstatic approach to G d, the desire ultimately to return and sanctify the world will always be implicit.

There is a famous story in the Talmud. Four men entered the "Grove" (the mystical secrets of the Torah): Ben Azzai, Ben Zoma, Acher and Rabbi Akiva. Ben Azzai looked and died. Ben Zoma looked and was stricken (with madness). Acher mutilated the shoots (i.e., became an apostate). Rabbi Akiva "entered in peace and came out in peace."

On the face of it, the important difference between Rabbi Akiva and the other three was in how he came out of the "Grove." Why does the Talmud emphasize that he "entered in peace?"

But the truth is that how each of the four entered, determined how they emerged. Ben Azzai entered seeking ecstasy, not return; therefore he "looked and died." (It is interesting to note that his Divine service was generally characterized by aspects of withdrawal — see Talmud, Yevamot, 63b; Sotah, 4b. Cf. Shulchan Aruch Harav, Hilchot Talmud Torah, beg. ch. 3, in Kuntres Acharon.)

But Rabbi Akiva entered "in peace," in obedience to the Divine will and seeking to unite the higher and lower worlds. That is why he came out in peace. His intention of returning was implicit at the outset of his path to religious ecstasy.
This, too, was how Aaron was to enter the Holy of Holies, in fear, obedience and self-abnegation. And in this way he was able to "make atonement for himself and for his house" and to say a prayer for the sustenance of Israel, each of them acts of concern for the world.

4. Experience Into Action

All the Torah's narratives have a teaching which is applicable to every Jew, not simply to the outstanding few. What, then, is the universal significance of the story of Nadav and Avihu? Surely not everyone can reach a level of ecstasy where one's life is in danger. A few need the warning; but what of the many?

But every Jew is sometimes awakened to an intense religious experience, especially on Shabbat and the Festivals, more particularly during the Ten Days of Repentance, and above all on Yom Kippur. He is for a while taken out of his daily routine, his normal anxieties, and inwardly rises beyond his usual mental confines.

It is at these times that he must remember that whatever he experiences when he enters this holy domain must be carried with him when he returns to his everyday world. He must not seek ecstasy for its own sake, but for the sake of the subsequent return. A religious experience must not be left as a memory; it must remain active in animating the whole of his life. Like Rabbi Akiva, he must enter and come out "in peace," that is, bringing G d and the world closer together in harmony.

5. The Blessing of G d

This connection between the manner of entering and of leaving the realm of holiness, applies not only to the service of the Jew, but also to the material world itself. For all the Jew's needs, material as well as spiritual, come to him directly from G d: "If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments and do them, then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield her produce..." (Leviticus 26:3-4). Only through his bond with G d does the Jew receive his material needs. He who says "It will be well with me for I will walk in the stubbornness of my heart" is always in the last analysis proved mistaken.

And this is intimated in our Parshah, describing the procedure of the High Priest's service. It was only after he had entered the Holy of Holies that he was able to pray for and secure the sustenance of the people.

So it is that the public world that the Jew inhabits, and the private world of his religious experience, are intrinsically related. For if he draws his experience into the world, the world is thereby sanctified by man and blessed by G d.

Haftarah for Shabbat Parshat Acharei
Amos 9:7-15.
This week's haftorah foretells the exiles and punishments that will befall the Jews because they strayed after the ways of the heathens — behavior that this week's Torah reading proscribes.

The prophet Amos delivers G d's message, reminding the people of G d's kindness to them — taking them out of Egypt and singling them out as His chosen nation. Nevertheless, because of their misdeeds, . G d will destroy the Northern Kingdom of Israel; but will not completely destroy the house of Jacob. The Jews will be scattered amongst the nations, but eventually they will return to their land — on the day of the redemption. G d will then reinstall the House of David to its former glory and there shall be peace and abundance upon the land.

The haftorah ends with G d's promise: "And I will return the captivity of My people Israel, and they shall rebuild desolate cities and inhabit [them], and they shall plant vineyards and drink their wine, and they shall make gardens and eat their produce. And I will plant them on their land, and they shall no longer be uprooted from upon their land, that I have given them, said the L-rd your G d."

Weekly Sermon will take place immediately following the Daily Tanya class, on Erev Shabbat or Erev HaChag (the eve of the holiday). It usually is at about 9am, but if you cannot catch it live it remains recorded on the Rabbi’s Facebook feed.

Join Rabbi Eilfort Friday mornings on Facebook Live for his Weekly Sermon. If you have not already done so, please send Rabbi Eilfort (Yeruchem Eilfort) a Friend Request on Facebook!

Lesson Details
Lesson 1
Beyond Good Neighbors
Most laws are designed to protect the rights of people and their property. But Judaism’s civil code is driven by a different goal. Explore how laws of damages and disputes support a uniquely Jewish view of the human mission.

Lesson 2
Beyond Restitution
In seeking to restore the rights of plaintiffs, Jewish courts actively assist offenders in achieving full repentance too. Why? Discover the advantage of properly undoing damage over mere compensation.

Lesson 3
Beyond Taking Offense
You may feel a moral urge to speak up against an offensive action. But might you have a legal responsibility to deter someone from certain behaviors? Judaism says: Yes. In this lesson, we discuss why and when.

Lesson 4
Beyond Personal Freedom
With 613 commandments in the Torah and myriad rules expounded in the Talmud, can Judaism ever be called “liberating”? Let’s delve into the Exodus, the covenant, and the ways in which laws can lead to the purest human freedom.

Lesson 5
Beyond Lawful Ownership
Is the claim of ownership anything more than a subjective social agreement? A foundation of Chassidic thought is that material possessions contain spiritual energy that is specific to their owners. Let’s consider the owner’s rights and responsibilities through this lens.

Lesson 6
Beyond Presumption of Innocence
While a presumption of innocence can protect defendants from liability, it is not quite a declaration of uprightness. Jewish law goes so far as to presume every person’s core goodness. See how this view can lead us to a truly upright world.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Membership

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!

We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today". Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to  [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Hebrew School & C-Kids

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.  Our students want to be here!

Please contact our Hebrew School Director, Morah Chaya Eilfort for info at [email protected].

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Dear Friends,

Passover is an eight-day holiday and doesn't end after the Seders. We continue to commemorate the Exodus from Egypt all week, culminating in the last two holiday days, in which we recall the splitting of the sea, and pray for the Ultimate Redemption with Moshiach.

When G-d split the sea for the Jews escaping the Egyptians, we were able to perceive His ability to perform nature-shattering miracles. And when Moshiach comes, we will once again experience such otherworldly miracles.

As the sun sets on the last day of Passover, we have a meal called “Moshiach’s Meal,” where we drink four cups of wine and eat matzah one last time. We do that in anticipation of the Ultimate Redemption, with complete faith that it can and will come any moment!

Chag same'ach!

PESACH AND SHABBOS NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
We are Open for Services this Week – And there will be NO Soup & Challah

The Last Days of Pesach are Here: Full Schedule Below

Erev Shevi’i Shel Pesach Minyan tomorrow at 8am

Baruch Hashem, MANY GUESTS are Joining Us for the Holiday

We are very happy to welcome guests to our beautiful shul and community. A large group of individual families will be staying in the area and will be joining us for services and for meals. Not only are we blessed by fulfilling the powerful Mitzvah of Hachnasas Orchim (Welcoming Guests), income is also generated for our community, which helps us pay our bills. We always treat our honored guests as family, which is exactly the way that we wish to be treated when in someone else’s shul.

URGENT Appeal – This was sent last week with a very limited response so we are sending it again HOPING that everyone can respond generously. This Pesach has been wildly expensive and help is needed.

My Dearest Friends,
Please excuse the uniform nature of this email. I have run out of time and needed to reach everyone right away. We are in a critical situation.
It is Erev Pesach, the Eve of Passover. Traditionally Jews have given Tzedakah at this time of year to help others who are less fortunate. Our annual appeal that went out in last week’s mail has had a minimal response. At the same time we have been sending out food, giving out Passover supplies (including ‘Seder to Go’ kits), and have been working harder than ever to bring meaningful spiritual nourishment to you, our community. We have provided thousands of dollars of emergency relief to people living in their cars, out of work, at risk for losing their apartments, who couldn’t pay for their electricity, or for their prescriptions.

We are burning the wick at both ends – more expenditures and less income.

I am asking for your help now.

I know it is a scary time filled with uncertainty for many.

But I also know that G-d is greater than the coronavirus! I know that He wants us to help each other. I know that this is our opportunity to shine! And I know that the Talmud tells us that Tzedakah saves from death!

These are historical times. Thank G-d, it seems we are through the worst of it but things are still not entirely stable. In a few years we will look back at these events and ask ourselves did we do all that we could do for each other?

Please feed the hungry. Please provide money so we can continue to support our community in its time of need. I know I am asking for something very difficult. But I am asking, and I am asking YOU.

Please follow this link and make an immediate contribution to our Passover fund, which is going directly to help those who need it most. Your donation will make a big difference! www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate. For those who have already participated, THANK YOU and G-D BLESS!

May G-d respond with miraculous mercy due to our mercy and may He bless each one of us with a Happy, Sweet, and HEALTHY Passover!

With much love and appreciation,
Rabbi Eilfort

Kiddush Sponsor(s)

This week’s Kiddushes are being sponsored by the Rodals, in honor of Dovid’s birthday, the Alters, and the Eilforts! Please join us for our Kiddush lunches each day after services.

Passover News

We will be hosting two Yeshiva students who will be helping us with our Passover preparations and observances.

This year we distributed more hand-baked Shmurah Matzah than ever before! If you would like some for the remainder of Pesach please respond to this message. There is no charge. Donations are gratefully accepted. We still have some available.
For the first time we will be offering communal meals on the final days of the holiday as well. Follow this link to see the menus and pricing: Link

Meal of Moshiach – The Holiday of Passover is primarily about our Exodus from Egypt. The Holiday comes to a crescendo on the Last Days of the Holiday (The 7th of Passover and the 8th of Passover). It is specifically on the 8th Day of Passover, known as Acharon shel Pesach, that we commemorate our beloved departed with the recitation of the Yizkor Memorial Service.

Later in the day we enjoy the Se’udas Moshiach, the Meal of Moshiach. The Rebbe taught us that the coming of Moshiach is always on our mind and in our hearts, but as we are transitioning out of Passover it is even more so. We partake of a special meal during which we discuss inspirational thoughts about Moshiach, sing beautiful Chasidic melodies, and close out the holiday on a high note. Everyone is invited to join us for this special celebration on Saturday evening at 6:30pm preceded by Mincha at 6pm.

Slightly Updated Passover Schedule
We look forward to an amazing Passover and look forward to seeing you!

Security Protocols

Everyone is Subject to Search

No Firearms (We have a well-defined security plan in effect and any unauthorized firearms could create confusion and actually reduce security).

All Bags Subject to Search

Why Jews Celebrate Passover Even While in Exile
By: Rabbi Yossy Goldman
Courtesy of Chabad.org

We are currently celebrating Passover, the Festival of Freedom, and yet, since the original Exodus and liberation, we have again lost our freedom. The Babylonians destroyed our First Temple, the Romans the Second, and we became a wandering people for millennia.
Even today, the Temple Mount is forbidden to Jewish worshipers. And, as powerfully impressive as the Western Wall may be, it is only a remnant of the glorious Holy Temple that is yet to be rebuilt.
So why do we continue to celebrate the anniversary of our liberation when that very freedom was subsequently lost?
There are those who have suggested: “You can take the Jew out of Egypt (and slavery) … but you can’t take Egypt out of the Jew!”
In other words, the slave mentality has remained ingrained in our national psyche.
Yet, back in the 16th century, the holy Rabbi Judah Lowe argued differently. Known as the Maharal, he was a mystic, halachist, philosopher, and chief rabbi of Prague.
The Maharal writes that not only did the Jews avoid inheriting a slave mentality from Egypt, but the opposite—the Exodus forever changed the inner identity of the Jew.The Exodus set us free, not only physically and politically, but spiritually and psychologically.
The Exodus was not just a one-off historical event, or a fantastic, dramatic story that we retell every year at our Passover Seders. No. The Exodus was a spiritual revolution which changed the mentality, the mindset, the psyche, and the very nature of a Jew forever. Freedom was wired into our national DNA. We are, by definition, a free people, and nothing and no one can ever change that.
And so, the Season of our Liberation is indeed worthy of eternal remembrance.
________________________________________
The Sixth Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, of righteous memory, spiritual leader of Russian Jewry from 1920 onwards, fought the Communists tooth and nail. They were hellbent on eradicating Jewish practice in Russia, but with unwavering commitment he and his chassidim kept Jewish schools, shuls and mikvahs going clandestinely. Many paid with their lives, including both my wife’s grandfathers.
The Rebbe himself was arrested and sentenced to death, but even in prison he remained resolute. Miraculously, his sentence was commuted to 10 years of exile in Kostroma, a few hundred miles from Moscow.
Leningrad, 1927. The Rebbe was on the train about to go into exile. Many hundreds of chassidim came to the train station to bid him farewell. The place was packed with uniformed officers, members of the secret police, and Jewish informants. Yet the Rebbe came out and addressed the crowd. Knowing full well that every word he said would be reported to the Communist authorities, he said:
“May G d be with us as He was with our ancestors; may He not forsake us nor abandon us . . .” Only our bodies went into exile, but not our souls . . . We must proclaim openly before all that with regard to any matter of our faith —Torah, mitzvahs and Jewish custom—it is not subject to the opinion of others, nor can any oppressive force be used against it . . .
. . .This is our request to the Holy One, may He not forsake us nor abandon us. G d should give us true strength to be unintimidated by physical pain, and on the contrary to accept it with joy, so that every punishment we receive for supporting a cheder (Jewish school), for learning Torah, for performing mitzvahs, shall increase our fortitude in the holy work of strengthening Judaism.
We must remember that imprisonment and hard labor are only temporary things, whereas Torah, mitzvahs and the Jewish people are eternal . . .
How powerful! What courage, defiance, and unbelievable faith.
What was the Rebbe’s bottom-line message? Only our bodies can go into exile, but not our souls. The neshama does not go into galut. They may imprison and enslave our bodies, but the soul of a Jew is always free.
Miraculously, after only 10 days in exile the Rebbe was released and permitted to leave Russia. He spent time in Riga and in Poland before arriving in the United States in 1940, where he re-established the center of Chabad until his passing in 1950.
The Rebbe was not only echoing the words of the Maharal; he was living proof.
________________________________________
Which brings me to April 1943, the very last Pesach Seder in the Warsaw Ghetto.
Brave, defiant Jewish fighters courageously fought back against the mighty Nazi war machine from the rooftops, while down below, in the cellars, a Pesach Seder was taking place. They found a white tablecloth to cover the table, and candles. They even managed to bake matzah in the ghetto! Marror they had enough of; there was no shortage of bitterness there.
Can you imagine the child asking the Mah Nishtanah that night?! Some of the Jews at that Seder in Warsaw survived the war. Most did not. But the faith, the courage, the defiance, and the sense of inner freedom to even attempt to hold a Seder in those circumstances is awe-inspiring.
Or how about the Jews who risked their lives to bake matzah in the concentration camps? I knew one of them personally—Reb Yankel Friedman. He joined the holy Klausenberger Rebbe in the dangerous secret mission to bake matzahs inside the camps.
The Klausenberger Rebbe, Rabbi Yekusiel Yehudah Halberstam,4 lost his wife and 11 children in the Holocaust. He survived and ended up in New York, where he rebuilt his family, and his community. Later he moved to Israel and the Laniado Hospital in Netanya is just one of many institutions he built. He was a giant of spirit and inspired many thousands with his indomitable faith under fire.
________________________________________
And that innate freedom of the Jew is likewise embodied in the story of Pini Nahmani. On Thursday, April 2, 1970, an Israeli fighter jet was shot down over Syria. The pilot, 26-year-old Pini Nahmani, was imprisoned in the Al Mazza jail in Damascus. He was later freed as part of a prisoner exchange between the two countries.
Pini wrote about his time in prison. With Passover approaching, he and his two fellow Israelis inmates prepared for a Seder. They scrubbed the floor and painted a Seder plate on a piece of cardboard. They had two Haggadahs and some matzah from the chief rabbi of Zurich.
Boaz Eitan, the youngest, asked the Mah Nishtanah, the Four Questions. They ate matzah and they sang. They sang all their favorite Passover songs; the songs of their youth. They sang so loudly that the prison guards warned them to tone it down or they would be sent to solitary confinement. But they ignored the guards. They felt free and they kept singing.
Pini later wrote that his most memorable and inspirational Seder was the one he celebrated in that Damascus prison.
Stripped of everything, including their dignity, he and his fellow Israelis were determined to remain free men and faithful Jews, despite the torture and the terror. And they did. Miraculously, they lived to tell the tale.
________________________________________
As the Maharal taught, ever since the Exodus, every Jew possesses that innate, unbreakable sense of freedom. This Passover, may we tap into it and let it liberate us from the drudgery and mediocrity to achieve true, inner freedom.

Wishing you a Sweet and Wonderful Passover and a Peaceful and Healthy Shabbos!

Haftarah for the 7th Day of Passover
II Samuel 22:1-51.
This week's haftorah describes the song King David composed in his old age, echoing the weekly Torah reading, where Moses delivers his parting words to the Jewish nation in song form.
David's song expresses gratitude to G d for saving him from all his enemies. He starts with the famous words, "The L-rd is my rock and my fortress." He goes on to describe the pain and hardships he encountered and reiterates that he always turned to G d in his moments of distress. He recounts G d's reaction to those who tormented him: "The Lord thundered from heaven; and the Most High gave forth His voice. And He sent out arrows and He scattered them, lightning and He discomfited them. . . I have pursued my enemies and have destroyed them; never turning back until they were consumed."
The King attributes his salvation to his uprightness in following G d's ways: "The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands He recompensed me..."
The song ends with David's expression of thankfulness: "Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the nations, and to Your name I will sing praises. He gives great salvation to His king, and He performs kindness to His anointed; to David and to his seed, forevermore."

Haftarah for the 8th Day of Passover
Isaiah 10:32-12:16
This haftarah is a prophecy by Isaiah regarding the messianic time to come. He foretells of “a staff from the shoot of Jesse,” father of King David, upon whom the Divine spirit will rest and who will be able to judge honestly by way of smell.
The prophet tells us that “the wolf will dwell with the lamb, and the leopard will lie with the kid goat; the calf and the young lion will graze together, and a young lad shall lead them.”
He continues to describe how G d will gather the exiled Jews from all over the world, to bring them back home to the Holy Land. In the newly constituted Jewish kingdom, the ancient rivalry between Judah and Ephraim will end, and they will join forces to subdue their historic enemies.
At that time, Israel will sing G d’s praises, thanking Him for all that he did and does for them, even that which had once appeared to be punishment but has now been revealed to be goodness in disguise.

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more!

Dear Friends,
As we gather with family and friends at the Passover Seder, we will read about the Four Sons – the four types of people we are to include in the retelling of the story of the Exodus. There is the wise child, the wicked one, the simpleton, and the child that doesn't even realize that anything different is happening that night.

For generations, the focus was reaching out to and educating these “children,” because for generations, most Jews fell into one of these categories.

With time, however, a fifth type of Jew has developed. One who, unlike the other four, doesn't even show up at the Seder. It is this fifth son, taught the Lubavitcher Rebbe, who needs the most attention today.

The “fifth children” need to be invited to the Seder and introduced to the heritage that is rightfully theirs. It is our responsibility to include them in all aspects of Jewish life, and make sure they feel part of the community.

So think about who you know that might not have a Seder to attend, or may not even know what Pesach is, and reach out. Invite. Encourage. Share your Seder, your knowledge, and our heritage.

Chag same'ach!

PESACH AND SHABBOS NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
We are Open for Services this Week – And there will be NO Soup & Challah

Pesach is Here! Full Schedule Below
Special Erev Pesach Minyan tomorrow at 8am.

URGENT Appeal

  2. If you have been around anyone who has Covid please do not come.
  3. If your doctor told you to be especially careful please do not come.

We choose to remain a close and loving community.

Security Protocols

The Holiday of Passover – Chag HaPesach
By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

Ma’ot Chittim – Money for Food

Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, is perhaps the best known of all the Jewish holidays. Who amongst us doesn’t remember sitting around a table celebrating the Seder, the traditional Passover meal, with our family and friends?
There is a reason why Pesach is so well known. In fact the Haggadah, the special Passover prayer book that we read from during the Seder, tells us the answer. An emphasis is placed upon transmitting the story of our people’s exodus from Egypt to our children. One of the most crucial Mitzvot, divine commandments, is the commandment to “Teach them (Torah and Mitzvot) diligently to your children.” On top of that we are told, “And you shall tell your children on that day (on Passover, the story of the exodus).”
It is precisely this strong emphasis of this particular story, which has resulted in our observance of Passover with such zeal till today, some 3,334 years after the first Passover. It is the story of Passover and the observance of Pesach, filled with its special observances, which inform our divine service for the balance of the year.
It is no wonder then that we make a special pre Passover appeal to help those in need, specifically for their Seder requirements. This unique monetary request has a special name, Ma’ot Chittim, which means money for food (literally bread). All year we are commanded to give Tzedakah/Charity. But before Pesach that regular commandment evolves into a super-commandment. It is so important that it is better that we simplify our own Passover plans a bit in order to give extra Ma’ot Chittim.
This year we have been presented with an abundance of opportunities to fulfill this precious Mitzvah. While we certainly have to maintain our financial support of our local poor and worthy institutions that help distribute funds/food to the needy, these days we have been presented with a moment that necessitates that we rise to the occasion.
Thousands and tens of thousands of our brothers and sisters in the Ukraine have been rendered penniless, they have literally been made into refugees overnight by the current conflict. It is hard to imagine the hardships that they are being forced to endure. One day they are living at home and are the beneficiaries of a robust Jewish community with all of its requisite institutions that help support Jewish life, and the next day they have been forced to flee for their lives.
And let us not forget the countless Jewish institutions around Europe and Israel that have graciously and generously received these refugees doing their utmost to make them feel welcome, cared for, and safe.
I view the Jewish response to the Ukrainian crises as nothing short of a human miracle of (nearly) Biblical proportions.
I read a thought told by Natan Sharansky, the famous Jewish ‘refusenik’ from the Soviet Union who shared that during the times of the Communist regime in the former USSR to be labeled a Jew in one’s passport meant tremendous hardships. From difficulties finding good jobs to discrimination getting into the better schools, being Jewish was a mark of additional difficulty.
Sharansky marveled at how the times have changed. He commented that now, during this humanitarian catastrophe it is precisely the Jews who are being saved due to the intervention of the international Jewish community. “Ashreinu mah tov chelkainu,” Happy we are! How wonderful is our portion!
This miraculous level of support demonstrates our keen interest in and love of our fellow Jews. Incidentally, it provides a shining example to all the nations of the world of how to move with alacrity to save one’s people when they need help, and how we all must try to help each other.
It is almost Pesach and we are undoubtedly busy preparing our homes for the joyous holiday. We are also planning how to distribute our Ma’ot Chittim. Let us resolve to dig even deeper this year and to include the refugees and the communities that welcomed them in our charitable giving plan. Let us find a way to enable them to sit at the Seder table and to thank the Almighty for being redeemed from Egypt while passing on the message of eternal freedom to their children, just as we do with ours!

Wishing you a Sweet and Wonderful Passover and a Peaceful and Healthy Shabbos!

Haftarah for 1st Day of Passover
Joshua 3:5-7; 5:2:15; 6:1; 6:27
The haftarah for today mentions the Paschal sacrifice, echoing the Torah portion which describes the preparations and the sacrifice done in Egypt under Moses' leadership.
After thirty days of mourning Moses' passing, Joshua tells the people to prepare themselves for the crossing of the river Jordan, he tells the priests to carry the Ark of the Covenant in front of the people. G d tells Joshua that He will show his greatness to the people of Israel "that they may know that as I was with Moses, so will I be with you".
G d tells Joshua to circumcise the Jewish men who had not yet been circumcised due to the desert weather, he does so, reminding them of the previous generation of men, who had gone out of Egypt, who had all been circumcised before partaking of the Passover offering. Joshua reminds the people of past events, how they had to wait for that generation to die in the desert as they would not be able to enter the land of Israel. Once everyone was circumcised they waited for all the men to recover.
G d tells Joshua "this day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you", referring to a vision of the star of blood which the Egyptians had said was over the Jewish people at the time of the Exodus, not knowing that it was the blood of the circumcision. Joshua calls the place Gilgal. There the people of Israel make camp and offer the Passover sacrifice, two days later G d stop sending the manna and the people eat the produce of the land.
Joshua sees a sword-holding man on the outskirts of Jericho and asks him on whose side he is on. "And he said, No, but I am the the captain of the host of the L-rd; I have now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and prostrated himself, and said to him, What does my lord say to his servant? And the captain of the Lord's host said to Joshua, Remove your shoe from your foot; for the place upon which you stand is holy. And Joshua did so."
The haftorah ends with a message that the city of Jericho was under siege and that G d was with Joshua.

Haftarah for the 2nd Day of Passover
II Kings 23:1-9, 21-25
The haftarah for the second day of Passover begins after King Josiah learns of a historic Torah scroll that had been discovered in the Holy Temple. It chronicles the public reading of the scroll and the national movement toward return to G d that ensued.
Full of newfound inspiration, King Josiah had the idolatrous artifacts and priests removed from the Temple, and destroyed the other shrines that had been erected in Judea.
The king then encouraged the people to celebrate Passover as commanded in the Torah, something that had been neglected for generations.
The haftarah concludes by telling us that “there never was a king before [Josiah] who returned to G d with all his heart and all his soul and all his might, [to follow what was] written in the Torah of Moses, and there never afterwards arose another one like him.”

Sponsor a Kiddush

A huge thank you to our dedicated Kiddush Committee (including but not limited to): Naomi Alter, Sheila Lebovitz, Channah Hale, Kayla Perez, and the Rebbetzin.

Our weekly, communal lunch is a chance to enjoy our gorgeous Shabbos atmosphere, together with our wonderful community, in the beautiful surroundings of our breezeway and patios.

We thank our generous sponsors, without whom, none of this would be possible!

We always need additional sponsors.  If you have a birthday, anniversary, Yarzeit, or some other occasion you want to beautifully commemorate while benefiting the entire community please consider Kiddush sponsorship (half sponsorships also available). We also hope that everyone will be supportive and understand that multiple sponsors benefits the shul and doesn’t, in any way detract, from your occasion

If you are interested please respond to this message or call the shul, 760-943-8891, and you will be put in touch with the appropriate party to make your occasion happen. Please see below for a list of the upcoming Kiddush Sponsors.

Easy Fundraising Opportunity

First, let us take this opportunity to thank all of those who have had Facebook Birthday Fundraisers for Chabad at La Costa! I cannot tell you how much Nechama & I appreciate it! The money we have received through these fundraisers has helped our shul continue with programming, delivering soup and challah as well as other activities.

Do you have a birthday coming up? We would be honored if you would consider making our shul the recipient of your birthday fundraiser.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to celebrate your birthday and do a wonderful Mitzvah at the same time? Thank you for your consideration and Happy Birthday!

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Send a personal email to  [email protected] to schedule an appointment today.

Next week, Jews around the world will be marking the 120th birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory. (see the flyer below)

Throughout the years of his leadership, whenever a big deal was made about a personal occasion, such as his birthday, the Rebbe made it clear that it was not about himself but about bettering the world and making it a home for G-d.

At the farbrengen marking the Rebbe’s 70th birthday in 1972, he requested a unique birthday “gift” — that in the coming year, 71 new Chabad institutions would be established around the world.

Indeed, by the time the Rebbe’s 71st birthday arrived, the number of new institutions — including synagogues, community centers, schools, and more — far surpassed the original goal of 71. And it didn’t stop there. For years to come, every time the Rebbe’s birthday came around, it was marked around the world by setting new goals for growth and expansion.

This year, as his 120th birthday on the 11th of Nissan approaches, new initiatives are being undertaken, new institutions are being opened, and new goals are being set.

We continue living with the Rebbe’s teachings and guidance, and we will continue giving him the birthday presents he clearly wanted. His influence lives on, including the drive he instilled in us to constantly do more for all of mankind, making the world ripe for the Final Redemption with the coming of Moshiach—may it happen speedily!

Shabbat shalom,

 SHABBOS NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
We are Open for Services this Week – And there will be NO Soup & Challah

Bar Mitzvah Celebration THIS Shabbos! Mazel tov to the McCarthy Family!

Sam McCarthy will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah this Shabbos. Sam has been a member of our community from the moment he was born. We will be celebrating with gusto and everyone is invited to join in the festivities including the Kiddush Luncheon that is in Sam’s honor.

Shabbos HaGadol THIS Shabbos!

The Shabbos before Passover is called the Great Shabbos as it was on this day that the great miracle leading to the exodus from Egypt occurred. The Jewish people, who were largely lacking in Mitzvos, were commanded to set aside a lamb for what would ultimately become their Passover Sacrifice. They did so quite publicly. When the Egyptians asked why the Jewish people told them about the impending plague, the 10th plague, which was death of the first born. The Egyptian first born rebelled against Pharaoh trying to release the Jews before the devastation of the plague would harm them. The self sacrifice of the Jews, risking their very lives to fulfill a divine commandment brought tremendous merits to them and made them worthy to be redeemed from Egypt. It is a BIG DEAL to attend shul on this Shabbos as this miracle will be discussed.

Kiddush Sponsor(s)

This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored Paul Horwitz in honor of his grandson, Sam McCarthy, on his Bar Mitzvah. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join us in our beautiful weekly celebration.

Parshat Metzorah

By: Rabbi Aharon Loschak From Chabad.org

George Orwell demonstrated so vividly that “If thought corrupts language, language can also corrupt thought.” This is as true today as it was in 1946.

Even though we have been educated about its fallacy, we’re still falling for Newspeak every day.

In 2010, Anand Giridharadas observed that “When a company is ‘levering up,’ it often means, in regular language, that it is spending money it doesn’t have. When it is ‘right-sizing’ or finding ‘synergies,’ it may well be firing people. When it ‘manages stakeholders,’ it could be lobbying or bribing. When you dial into ‘customer care,’ they care very little. But when they call you, even at dinnertime, then it’s a ‘courtesy call.’”

It’s happening all around you, and the more you pay attention to it, the more you’ll notice it.

The good news?

You can get in on the scheme, too—in a good way, of course.

Good News On the Homefront

Parshat Metzora continues the topic of the last, namely the affliction of tzaraat. While the focus last week was on tzaraat of the skin and clothing, our parshah focuses on tzaraat that appears on the walls of one’s house. Long story short, if the lesion persists and spreads on the wall, the house must be destroyed.

While this may seem like a harsh punishment, Rashi, citing the Midrash, tells us something interesting:

This is [good] news for them that lesions of tzaraat will come upon them, because the Amorites had hidden away treasures of gold inside the walls of their houses during the entire forty years that the Israelites were in the desert, and through the lesion, he will demolish the house and find it.

The Talmud famously links tzaraat with lashon hara, slander, or, as Maimonides explains, with overall negative speech. Accordingly, we must wonder, how does this make sense? The owners of the house are being punished for doing something wrong, so why should they gain from it? Why should one who slandered another or spoke negatively be rewarded with discovering jewels in the walls of their home?

The Magic of Words

But the point of this punishment wasn’t just to give the sinner a slap on the wrist. Rather, it was a teaching moment to guide the sinner to properly appreciate the power of speech and thus use it the right way. Hence the treasure.

To explain:

Words are extremely powerful. Often, when we think about something, the idea is somewhat hazy. When we go ahead and articulate it, however, all of a sudden, the idea sharpens and comes into focus. It’s as if words possess the power to expose things that no amount of thinking can do.

Tyrannical regimes have been upheld with words, and healing has been brought to suffering souls with words. As many wise people throughout history have understood, when ideas are articulated the right way, they can literally topple governments, change minds, and bring tremendous goodness.

Kabbalah supports this idea, explaining how words reach into the deepest part of the soul. Thought exposes the workings of the mind, but words burrow straight to the source of all ideas, to the soul’s endless creative capacity, and as such, they expose new depth, clarity, and force.

Expose Jewels, Not Slander

Back to the person with tzaraat on their home. Yes, they sinned. They used words in a negative way. And that’s terrible. But the Torah doesn’t simply stifle negative speech and call it a day. That would only be half the job and a missed opportunity.

The point isn’t to just stymie negative speech but to advocate and harness the tremendous power of words in a positive and constructive way. So, if a person is going to use their words to expose something, to articulate a grand idea, to reach into their soul and bring up something revealing, it should be like the person who tears down the walls of their home and finds ... jewels.

Be Bold and Articulate

Much ink has been spilled over the power of words. Beyond simple tools we use to communicate with one another, great thinkers from the past observed just how much can be accomplished with the right language. Remember Orwell?

What does that tell us?

Choose your words wisely. Don’t just refrain from saying negative things. Tear down the walls of your home and expose those jewels! Be bold and articulate, spreading good ideas and positive energy around you.

Start dispensing compliments. Comment on a friend’s smile, tell a coworker how nice it is to chat during the day, or let your parents know that they did a great job raising you.

Learn something new—a Torah thought—and share it with the people around you. The moment you’re forced to articulate it to the public, it will take on new shape and meaning.

That’s the magic of words, and it’s the magic the Torah wishes to tell us about when it plants jewels inside a slanderer’s house.

Wishing you a peaceful and healthy Shabbos!

Haftarah of Parshat Metzorah

II Kings 7:3-20.

This week's haftorah discusses the story of four men stricken by tzara'at, a skin ailment caused by sins — one of the main topics of this week's Torah reading.

Haftorah's backdrop: King Ben-Hadad of Aram besieged Samaria (the Northern Kingdom of Israel). The resulting famine was catastrophic, reducing many to cannibalism. King Jehoram of Israel wanted to execute the prophet Elisha, considering that his prayers could have prevented the entire tragedy. Elisha reassured the king: "So has G‑d said, 'At this time tomorrow, a seah of fine flour will sell for [merely] a shekel, and two seahs of barley will sell for a shekel in the gate of Samaria.'" One of the king's officers present scoffed at the prophecy: "Behold, if G‑d makes windows in the sky, will this thing come about?" Elisha responded, "Behold, you will see with your own eyes, but you shall not eat there from."

Now, four men suffering from tzara'at dwelled in quarantine outside the city. They too were hungry, victims of the famine. They decided to approach the enemy camp to beg for food. They arrived only to find a deserted camp. For "G‑d had caused the Aramean camp to hear the sound of chariots and the sound of horses, the sound of a great army. And they said to one another, 'Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us.'" The entire enemy army fled, leaving behind their tents, horses, donkeys and provisions.

The four men went to the city and reported their findings to the gatekeepers who, in turn, informed King Jehoram. Though originally thinking that this was an ambush planned by the enemy, the king sent messengers who confirmed the miracle. The people swarmed out of the city and looted the enemy camp, thus breaking the famine and fulfilling Elisha's prophecy.

And the officer? The king placed him in charge of the city gates. He was trampled to death by the rampaging crowds — after seeing the fulfillment of the prophet's words.

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

As the month of Adar II comes to an end, we look back at the 60 days of joy that these two Adar months encompassed, and we know that good things don’t have to end—in fact, when done correctly, they can positively impact the future.

The joy we experienced during these two months is connected to Moses, whose birthday is on the 7th of Adar, and through whom G-d chose to bring to fruition the Exodus from Egypt.

The joy of Adar inevitably continues into the month of Nissan, the month in which we celebrate Passover.

Having Moses as their leader is what enabled the Jews to keep their faith and remain connected to G-d throughout the tumultuous Exodus and their long sojourn in the desert, and it is because of their Exodus that we know we will experience our Exodus, with the coming of Moshiach.

Shabbat shalom,

Rhonda Bloom’s Unveiling Ceremony Scheduled THIS Sunday

Please join us on Sunday, April 3 at 2pm in the Garden of Eden section of the El Camino Memorial Park (5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., San Diego). Following the dedication of Rhonda’s headstone we will then meet at her mother’s (Shirley Sandler) nearby gravesite for the dedication of her headstone.

There will then be a Kosher reception at Rhonda’s brother, Gary Grinberg’s home: 2132 Redgap, Encinitas, 92024.
Rhonda was a long time member of our community and beloved by many. It will be a huge (double) Mitzvah to participate in these short, but meaningful services, allowing us to have a Minyan so Kaddish can be recited.

Please respond to this message if you can participate.

Three Torahs THIS Shabbos!

We will be using three Torahs this Shabbos, which is a fairly rare event as it happens only a couple of times per year. One Torah is for the weekly portion, Tazria, one is for Rosh Chodesh, and one for the special reading on Shabbos HaChodesh. Please join us and bask in the beauty and spirituality of having three Torahs out and about!

Shabbos Attendance is Trending Upwards – Thank G-d!

We are looking for folks who can come and enjoy our spirited services together in an uplifting (and safe) environment. If you can come please let us know.

We simply MUST FIND A WAY to coexist and remain a close and loving community.

Soup and Challah - LIMITED - Soup & Challah This Week

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE
Rabbi's Letter | Thought for the Week | Haftarah

A Word of Torah
Living with the Times

Parshat Tazria
By: Rabbi Zalman Posner From Chabad.org
In this week’s Torah reading we have the description of afflictions which may beset man, the examinations by the kohen, and the laws of the quarantine, if necessary. The Mishnah teaches that “all afflictions one sees, except his own.”

No man examines his own afflictions; another must do this. The Torah describes physical disease, but the physical meaning does not exhaust the implications of these laws. The Mishnah’s teaching is especially apt.

Afflictions, moral shortcomings, are obvious and readily condemned in another. We are sensitive to the grossness of another’s poor manners, repelled by arrogance, shocked by stinginess, dismayed by that No fault escapes detection and forthright denunciation. “All afflictions man sees . . .” fellow’s insufferable complacency. We are struck with the full force of the repulsiveness of his poor character traits and moral deficiencies. Our clarity of vision, our objectivity, our courage and candor in denouncing shortcomings “right to his face” is a source of considerable pride to many of us. No fault escapes detection and forthright denunciation. “All afflictions man sees . . .”

But must we carry the burden of constantly correcting everyone’s failings on our shoulders? Will we be forgiven if we ignore others’ afflictions for a while as we examine our own? May our spiritual ministrations be directed toward ourselves, just for a while? This selfishness may be exercised with impunity. Let’s be selfless, if we must, in more mundane affairs.

Wishing you a peaceful and healthy Shabbos!

Haftarah of Parshat Tazria
II Kings 4:42-5:19.
This week's haftorah describes how a prophet miraculously cured an Aramite general of his tzara'at ailment. The bulk of this week's Torah reading discusses this skin disease and its related impurity.

The haftorah begins with a brief mention of one of the prophet Elisha's miraculous feats. He received a paltry gift of twenty loaves of bread and a sack of grain. At Elisha's insistence, this gift was shared amongst his hundred students. The food was enough for all—and there were even leftovers.

Naaman, general of the powerful Aramite armies, contracted tzara'at. A young captive Israelite maid advised him to seek the assistance of the "prophet in Samaria." Acting on this suggestion, the king of Aram dispatched a message to the king of Israel, "Behold I have sent Naaman my servant to you, and you shall cure him of his tzara'at!"

The king of Israel panicked, until Elisha sent him a message: "Why have you rent your garments? Let him come to me now, and let him know that there is a prophet in Israel!"

Elisha advised Naaman to immerse in the Jordan River. Despite his initial reluctance to do so, Naaman carried out the prophet's orders, and was immediately healed.

Elisha refused to accept any gifts from Naaman. The general promised Elisha that he would no longer serve any deity other than the One G d, and he departed.

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Send a personal email to  [email protected] to schedule an appointment today.

Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more!
