This week we once again read a double Torah portion, Behar and Bechukotai. Both portions discuss the observance of mitzvahs, G-d’s commandments, with Behar focusing on the supernatural relationship we have with G-d, and Bechukotai bringing them down to earth in a more practical way.
A Jew’s everyday life is imbued with opportunities to connect with G-d, whether it’s through prayer, Torah study, and performing mitzvahs. This connection we have with G-d cannot remain spiritual, it needs to become part of who we are as physical beings. That is why G-d created the world in the first place—to have a “dwelling place” in the lowest possible realm, all the while remaining spiritual.
And He wants us to be his partners in making this a reality.

A Word of Torah
Living with the Times
Parshi’ot BeHar / BiChukotai – On the Mountain / In My Statutes

This week we read a double portion, BeHar and BiChukotai, which mean ‘On the Mountain’, and ‘In My Statutes’, respectively. In the first portion we learn many of the particulars and strictures associated with the Sabbatical year and the Jubilee year.
The commentaries explain that the mountain referred to in the name is Mount Sinai, and that the portion is emphasizing the fact that all of the very specific details that would be enumerated came from Mount Sinai. Why the need to emphasize the source of the commandment specifically in this instance regarding this Mitzvah?
The premise behind this unique approach to agriculture is that every seven years the land must be left to lie fallow, treated like an ownerless property where anyone can come and take the fruit that is growing. The farmer may not sell his produce. He may not harvest the produce. There were seven sets of seven years and then the 50th, or Jubilee year was declared. When the Jubilee year, known in Hebrew as the Yovel year, occurred the farmer again was commanded to allow his field to lie fallow. Not only is the farmer forbidden the produce, the Jewish people are prohibited from buying the produce.
How was the farmer expected to make a living?
The Torah itself answers when it explains that G-d pledges that when one will scrupulously observe these Mitzvot He will command His blessing to be adequate to sustain the farmer from the produce grown in the sixth year to be sufficient for the sixth, seventh (Sabbatical) and even part of the eighth year (until the new crop comes in). A threefold blessing from one year’s produce!
What did the farmer do to merit such a tremendous reward? The answer is he had faith in the Almighty, and his profound faith informed his behavior to the extent that he allowed his most valuable possession – his land – to remain unworked for a long time. He literally put his life in G-d’s ‘Hands’.
Demonstrating faith to this degree is not easy for most of us. Yes, there are exceptional people who seem able to pull it off, but for most of us this represents a severe challenge.
To this very day many farmers in Israel carefully observe the laws as written. It is inspiring to see their faith! There is another element that is also inspiring and beautiful. Many thousands of people join together to help support the farmers. Those who financially participate in this way are literally serving as the Shluchim / emissaries of the Creator, as they have chosen to become the instrument through which G-d sends His blessings to those observing this precious commandment.
Why would G-d command such a thing?
This Mitzvah parallels the Mitzvah of Shabbat. Seven days we are commanded to do work and then we are to rest on the seventh day. What do we do on the seventh day? We spend extra time in prayer, in study, with our families and counting our blessings. We meditate deeply into our relationship with G-d and with His world. Leaving behind the mundane pursuit of making a living frees us to focus on the true reason we are here and what our lives are about.
What this means is that every one of us has the opportunity of emulating, at least to a small degree, the farmer who allows his fields to lie fallow. It is our chance to demonstrate our powerful faith in our G-d, who then will reciprocate with blessings totally beyond proportion!

Haftarah of Parshat BiChukotai
Jeremiah 16:19-17:14.
The haftorah discusses the punishments that await those who disregard G‑d's law, and the blessings that are the lot of those who follow the Creator's wishes. This follows the theme of this week's Torah reading which details at length the blessings and curses.
The prophet Jeremiah rebukes the people of Israel for their idolatrous ways and for not having faith in G‑d. He conveys G‑d's words of wrath towards those who do not put their trust in Him — foretelling exile as their punishment — and of blessings for those who do.
"Cursed is the man who trusts in man and relies on mortal flesh for his strength, and whose heart turns away from the G‑d. He shall be like a lone tree in the desert, and will not see when good comes, and will dwell on parched land in the desert, on salt-sodden soil that is not habitable. Blessed is the man who trusts in the G‑d, to whom G‑d will be his trust. For he shall be like a tree planted by the water, and which spreads its roots out into a stream, so it will not be affected when heat comes, and its leaves shall be green, and in the year of drought will not be anxious, neither shall it cease from bearing fruit."
The haftorah ends with the following poignant verses: "G‑d who is the source of the hopes of Israel, all that forsake You shall be shamed, and they who turn away from me shall be marked out on the earth that they have forsaken G‑d, the source of living waters. Heal me, O G‑d, then shall I be healed; help me, then I shall be helped, for You are my praise!"

Special Shabbos THIS Week
This Shabbos is Shabbos Mevorchim, the Shabbos on which we bless the upcoming new month of Sivan. Sivan is a month of great significance as it includes the holiday of Shavuot! It is also Shabbos Chazak, which means strength. It is so called because we will be concluding the book of Leviticus. When a book of the Torah is concluded the congregation says together, “Chazak Chazak vinis’Chazaik,” which means, “Stronger, Stronger, we will all become stronger!”
In honor of Mother’s Day we will be dedicating our celebration this Shabbos to Mothers everywhere. Where would we be without our mothers?!

10 Commandments & Yizkor Memorial Services
It is considered a great Mitzvah to listen to the reading of the 10 Commandments on Shavuot. Please mark your calendars for Monday, May 17th at 11am. Every Jewish man, woman, and child should come.
Likewise it is considered most worthy to recite the Yizkor Memorial service for those who have lost loved ones. Our Yizkor service will take place on Tuesday, May 18th at 12pm (it will be preceded by an inspirational sermon given by Rabbi Mendel Duchman).
Please note that there is no cost to attend any of these special services.
Additional Guest Speaker for Shavuos Announced
We are proud to announce that Rebbetzin Chana Levy (our own Rebbetzin’s mother) will be joining us, together with her husband Rabbi Naftali Levy, for the holiday. Rebbetzin Levy will be giving a fascinating talk titled, “From Scandal to Redemption – The Story of Moshiach.” You will be astonished by the ‘humble’ beginnings of the Davidic Dynasty and how it ultimately morphed into the root of our Righteous Moshiach.
Rebbetzin Levy is a highly regarded and noted teacher, lecturer, and writer in her local community and the wider Chabad community. She is viewed as a trailblazer who became an accomplished attorney at a time when Orthodox women and especially Chasidic women were typically not involved in advanced secular studies.
In addition we are hosting Rabbi and Mrs. Mendel and C. Rochel Duchman who will be joining our community for Shavuos as guest speakers! The Duchmans have visited us before and the reaction was over-the-top due to their infectious enthusiasm, warmth, and sincerity (not to mention the stories that they can share about Rabbi E’s childhood).
They will both be sharing their unique insights and fascinating stories of what it was like growing up in the presence of their distinguished and highly accomplished families and how those experiences informed and continue to inform their lives to this day.
Rabbi JJ Hecht (Rebbetzin Duchman’s father) worked very closely with the Rebbe on establishing the National Committee for the Furtherance of Jewish Education (NCFJE), an organization critical in establishing the ‘Release Time’ program and founded Hadar HaTorah, a Yeshiva specifically for Yeshiva students who started their educational careers at a later age. Rabbi Hecht and his wife Rebbetzin Chava (may she live and be well) also established Camp Emunah, the first Chabad overnight camp for girls, an incredibly successful institution (which our own Rebbetzin Nechama attended for many years). Rabbi Hecht often translated the Rebbe’s talks, particularly when the Rebbe addressed children, and he organized the massive Lag B’Omer parades, where tens of thousands would celebrate together at Chabad World Headquarters, 770 Eastern Parkway. Rabbi Hecht represented the very best of ‘home grown’ Chasidim, as he was born in the good old USofA. He and his Rebbetzin managed to successfully fuse old style Chasidism with modern American culture, and perhaps more importantly, modern American Jews.
Rabbi Mendel Duchman’s father, Reb Yisroel HaLevi Duchman, was a famous Chasid of the Rebbe. His infectious joy and love of the Rebbe inspired and elevated all around him. Rabbi Duchman hailed from a long line of esteemed Lubavitcher Chasidim. Reb Yisroel, as he was affectionately known, made it his business to remain connected to the Rebbe as only a true Chasid can. He went out of his way to always bring good cheer to the Rebbe. He was truly in his element on the holidays of Shmini Atzeres and Simchas Torah. Anyone who had the privilege of attending 770 on those holidays would have the pleasure of seeing Reb Yisroel reach a level of happiness that most of us can only hope for. Reb Yisroel and his Rebbetzin Rochel, may she live and be well, maintained a truly Chasidic home, one where anyone would be made to feel welcome, would be fed, and would hear encouraging words and incredible stories.
Our job is to instill this generation and future generations with the energy and spirit of these giants. No one will be better able to inspire us than Rabbi and Rebbetzin Duchman and it is a great blessing that they will be joining us to share their wisdom, insights, and humor. These two phenomenal people inspired our own Rabbi Eilfort to become an emissary of the Rebbe, and they are literally helping to inspire numerous young people on a weekly basis in the LA area at this time. Hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands, have been positively impacted by the Duchmans and they will be ‘all ours’ over Shavuos!
NEXT WEEK
Grand Re-opening Celebration
Over the past fourteen months the shul has been paused numerous times, we have held services in the breezeway, we have discontinued Kiddushes, we have installed high quality (and expensive) air filtration systems, we have worn masks, and we have socially distanced (all per governmental guidelines). Needless to say we will continue to strictly adhere to all legal guidelines as well as the advice of medical, rabbinical, and policy experts.
Baruch Hashem, thank G-d, we have maintained a spotless record! No one has become sick here. We plan on keeping it that way.
Now that most of our members have been vaccinated and San Diego has been taken out of the ‘Purple Tier’ we are ready to begin to encourage people to come home to your community. If you have received both vaccines and are in good health it is time.
We are planning a major holiday celebration for the upcoming Yom Tov of Shavuot! We have done this every year (except last year), but this year we will certainly add some ‘umph’ and pizazz! Lavish community meals will be served. We will have a splendid ice cream party (of Biblical proportions)! We will have our customary dairy Kiddush extraordinaire!
Most importantly we will sit together (socially distanced and masked) and daven as a community! We will listen to the 10 Commandments and we will recite the Yizkor Memorial service.
It is time. It will be safe.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Shavuot
FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - Tuition Free Hebrew School
Due to the economic hardships created by the pandemic we will be offering Tuition Free Hebrew School this year. Families are struggling to make ends meet, but we cannot allow the children to suffer. We are offering two options – In-person learning (outdoor and indoor classes, socially distant, masks on), and virtual learning. Please respond to this message for further information. We are the only synagogue in the county making such an offer! Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.

Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
