Dear Friends,
This Shabbat is the 17th of Tammuz, which, had it been on any other day of the week, would be a day of fasting to commemorate the walls of Jerusalem being breached in preparation for the destruction of the Holy Temple. Because it's Shabbat, the fast is postponed to Sunday, the 18th of Tammuz.
Since the purpose of fasting is not just the mourning aspect, but also the call for prayer and repentance, this year that is accomplished through celebrating Shabbat is the most joyous way possible. Not only may we not mourn on Shabbat, but we must go out of our way to avoid any semblance of mourning. So this Shabbat must be even more joyous and celebratory than any other week.
And we also pray that since the fast day is already being postponed, may it be permanently suspended with the arrival of Moshiach before the fast even begins.

Fast Day THIS Sunday – 17th of Tammuz
The 17th of Tammuz is a fast day for numerous reasons, most prominently the outer walls of Jerusalem were breached by the Romans, which led to the destruction of the Holy Temple three weeks later. This three week period is called the Three Weeks of Mourning, during which we do not buy new clothes, listen to music, and get married. The Three Weeks culminates with Tisha B’Av, the 9th of Av, the saddest day of the Jewish calendar, which is a 25 hour fast.
The fast this Sunday begins at 4:20am and ends at 8:26pm. Fasting is very important, as it awakens our souls and stirs our conscience. Many people also make sure to give extra Tzedakah on fast days, as part of the Teshuvah (repentance) process.
Minyan on Sunday begins at 8:30am and will include a Torah reading. Please join us.
Minyan Needed Wednesday at 7:30pm
A Minyan is needed this coming Wednesday evening so Kaddish can recited for a Yarzeit. If you are able to help with this tremendous Mitzvah please respond to this message. Thank you and G-d bless!

Living with the Times
Parshat Balak - Alone but not Lonely

Isn’t it incredible how King Solomon’s ancient words “There is nothing new under the sun”1 still hold true? I find it absolutely fascinating that statements in this week’s Torah reading still hold true over 3,000 years later.
It’s the story of Balaam, the powerful heathen prophet who attempts to curse our ancestors at the behest of King Balak of Moab.2 But, try as he might, Balaam’s attempts fail dismally. G d is clearly controlling him, and against his own wishes, he blesses the people instead of cursing them. Balak is exasperated, Balaam is frustrated, and he returns home a failure.
You may not be aware that it was Balaam who coined the phrase ma tovu ohalecha Yaakov, mishkenotecha Yisrael - “How good are your tents, Jacob; your dwellings, Israel,3 a line that has made it into our Siddur and is one of our most well-known synagogue prayers.
Let me focus here on another of Balaam’s memorable words. The prophet describes Israel as am levadad yishkon, “a nation that dwells alone.”4 The commentaries offer a variety of interpretations to this expression. Some say it refers to this world, while others suggest it means the World to Come. Regardless, they seem to agree that it is intended as a blessing, rather than a curse.
So, it appears that alone does not necessarily mean lonely. Thus, alone may be understood as distinctive, exceptional, and unique.
And yet, there’s no getting away from the simple meaning of the word. In my thesaurus, alone calls up the words lonely and lonesome. Indeed, the Jewish people have been very much alone throughout history, and that hasn’t changed. It was true in Balaam’s day, and it remains true today. “There is nothing new under the sun.”
In March 1972, when former Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin was Israel’s Ambassador to Washington, he received a request from then President of Israel Zalman Shazar to convey the blessings of the President and Israeli government to the Rebbe on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Rabin spent a considerable amount of time with the Rebbe and later recounted their conversation.
The Rebbe asked Rabin if he did not feel alone as the Ambassador of Israel among the 120 countries represented in Washington. Rabin said it was an honor for him, even if he did feel lonely at times.
“We have to realize the uniqueness of the Jewish nation,” said the Rebbe, and quoted the above Torah verse describing Israel as "a people that dwells alone." He asked Rabin whether it is by our own choice or by outside forces that Israel dwells alone among the other nations of the world. Is it a blessing or a curse? Is it something we embrace willingly, or is our rejection by the nations something which we must accept against our wishes? In short, is being alone a positive or a negative?
As their conversation continued, the Rebbe answered his own question.
“Being alone is both our own choice and forced on us by the nations of the world. On the one hand, we choose to hold fast to the Torah, our faith and traditions. This has preserved our uniqueness through millennia of persecution and wandering. Through the Inquisitions, expulsions, pogroms, and most of all, the Holocaust.
“On the other hand, external pressures have strengthened the core of Jewish belief and our loyalty to our traditions. In instances where a Jew may have been embarrassed by his Judaism and tried to hide it, there were external elements that forced his Judaism upon him, and this, too, prevented assimilation. So, it is a combination of both - choice and force - which has kept us alone among the nations - a combination of positive and negative.”
Rabin shared with the Rebbe that even the Russians had a begrudging respect for Israel. “The Russian ambassador once told me, ‘You are a small country, but you are a proud country.’”
As I have written elsewhere, while antisemitism is a terrible negative, it also has some positive consequences. Interestingly, philosophers who may themselves have been antisemites, have argued cogently that antisemitism has been good for the Jews and helped us retain our Jewish identity, rather than assimilating ourselves out of existence.
A few years ago, we had a guest speaker at our shul, Rami Sherman, one of the heroic commanders of the 1976 Entebbe hostage rescue. What that experience did for him spiritually, he shared: “I left an Israeli and I came back a Jew.”
I think of a number of young security volunteers who stand outside our shul on Shabbat or holidays, sometimes in inclement weather, to protect those of us inside. Some of these young men and women have never been seen inside the synagogue. What prompts them to offer their time and effort to the shul community is their Jewish pride and zealous commitment to protect us from our enemies. They may not be religious in practice, but they bristle at antisemitism and put themselves on the line to defend their people. Ironically, antisemitism has bolstered their Jewish identity.
Yes, even today Israel dwells pretty much alone. Sometimes even our friends aren’t as supportive as they could be. We know that we stand alone. And, especially in the UN, it can be very lonely.
On November 10, 1975, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution determining that “Zionism is a form of racism.” Some years later, when he visited Johannesburg, I had occasion to interview the late Chaim Herzog, former president of Israel who was Israel’s Ambassador to the UN at the time of that infamous resolution.
I asked him how he felt representing Israel during that dreadful time. He said it made him terribly angry, but also very proud. Responding to the UN resolution, he ended a brilliant speech with these words: “For us, the Jewish people, this resolution based on hatred, falsehood, and arrogance, is devoid of any moral or legal value. For us, the Jewish people, this is no more than a piece of paper and we shall treat it as such.” He then tore the resolution in half.
The resolution was revoked by the United Nations in 1991.
Yes, we may be alone. But we are distinctive in our Jewish pride, and even in our defiance when necessary.
We have nothing to be ashamed of. We have nothing to be prouder of than our distinctive Jewish values and way of life. We may be alone among the nations, but we are not at all alone, for G d is with us, protecting us and guiding our destiny.
May we all realize that “a people that dwells alone” is not a curse, but a most beautiful blessing.
Haftarah for Shabbat Parshat Balak
Micah 5:6-6:8.
This week's haftorah makes mention of the incident of Balak the king of Moab hiring the sorcerer Balaam to curse the Jewish people — the main topic of this week's Torah reading.
The prophet Micah prophesies about what will occur after the war of Gog and Magog, the war which precedes the coming of the Messiah and the Final Redemption.
"And the remnant of Jacob shall be in the midst of many peoples — like dew sent by G d, like torrents of rain upon vegetation that does not hope for any man and does not wait for the sons of men." The prophet describes how G d will remove the idols and sorcerers and how He will destroy the Jews' enemies.
The prophet Micah then goes on to rebuke the Jewish people for not observing G d's commandments, calling as witness the "mountains and hills" — a reference to the Patriarchs and Matriarchs — and reminding them of the great things G d had done for them. He took them out of Egypt and replaced the curses that Balaam son of Beor wanted to utter against them with blessings.
The Jewish people respond by saying that they do not know how to serve G d and ask for guidance. The prophet reminds them of the Torah, and that all they need to do is contained within it: "He has told you, O man, what is good, and what G d demands of you: but to do justice, love kindness, and walk discreetly with your G d."

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School & C-Kids
Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know. Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!
Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed
PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul
We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.
Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.
Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.
Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.
If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
