MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

The cherubim atop the Holy Ark in the Temple depicted G-d’s relationship with the Jewish people. When the Jews pleased G-d, the cherubim would face each other, and when the would Jews sin and lose favor in G-d’s eyes, the cherubim would face away from one another.

The Talmud describes the scene that the Bablonians witnessed upon entering the Holy of Holies as they ransacked the Temple: the cherubim were not only facing each other, they were in an embrace. This confused them, as they had assumed they were given license by G-d to destroy the Temple due to the Jews’ sins. And yet, here they found the cherubim expressing G-d’s love and commitment to His people!

The eternal message is clear: Even when we fall to the lowest rungs of their relationship with G-d, He never gives up on us. Although the destruction indeed came as a result of our sins, G-d was telling us that He will always be with us and is anticipating our return.

That’s why, as we mark the anniversary of the destruction on Tisha B’av, we don’t only mourn the loss, but we look towards a much brighter future. In fact, the date of Tisha B’av is also the anniversary of the birth of Moshiach, the redeemer of the Jewish people. Before the destruction even occurred, a remedy was already in place.

May these days of sadness be transformed into days of joy and celebration, when we witness the coming of Moshiach and the rebuilding of the Temple!

If you appreciate the presence of a lighthouse of Jewish kindness and compassion as well as religious and social services, we are asking you to please join us, as a member this year.

Membership means that you make a financial commitment to help maintain the Jewish community of the North County Coastal region and our three centers.

Can we count on you?

Please visit our website and log onto our Membership page and pick the level of Membership that ‘speaks’ to you. We ask that you are as generous as possible in you doing your part in supporting Judaism.

DUE-DATE APPROACHING - It’s Calendar Time

We are starting our annual calendar campaign at this time. Chabad’s Jewish Art Calendar is a beautiful collection of Jewish art, explanations of important dates, recipes and a lot more. Best of all our calendars are customized for our community, which really makes the calendar OURS. We print and distribute hundreds of calendars all across north county and beyond, so it is an opportune time for businesses to advertise while at the same time supporting the shul.

We are looking for a sponsor who would like to dedicate this year’s edition. Sponsorship starts at $3,600 and allows us to raise much-needed funds through the ads.

Kiddush Sponsor

This week’s Kiddush is sponsored.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to participate in our weekly Shabbat meal together.

KIDDUSH SPONSORS NEEDED! Can YOU step up to the plate?

An Important Note about Kiddushes –

The policy of the shul is to allow multiple sponsors for every Kiddush unless it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah or something similar (like a 50th wedding anniversary etc.).

There is no such thing as an exclusive Kiddush sponsor.

This is our policy for numerous reasons, not least of which is the fact that Kiddush sponsorships help generate much-needed income for our community and encourages more people to participate.

We thank you for your support and understanding!

Soup & Challah Sponsors

Soup and Challah is being sponsored by Clive Walden & the estate of Channah Hale. A big Yasher Koach to our volunteer deliverers - Carrie Rossenfeld.

Challah is delivered to Mental Health Residential Centers in the area, people undergoing chemotherapy, and people who really love the addition to their Shabbos experience.

Deliver and get a bag of challah for your family as well!

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE
Haftarah Overview

Haftarah for Parshas Va’Etchanan

Jeremiah 2:4–28; 4:1–2.

Isaiah 40:1–26

This week’s haftorah is the first of a series of seven “haftarot of Consolation.” These seven haftarot commence on the Shabbat following Tisha B’Av and continue until Rosh Hashanah.

This section of Isaiah begins with G‑d’s exhortation to the prophets: “Console, O console My people . . . Announce to Jerusalem that her period of exile has been fulfilled and that her sins have been forgiven.”

Isaiah’s prophecy describes some of the miraculous events that will unfold with the onset of the messianic era, such as the return of the exiles to Jerusalem, the revelation of G‑d’s glory, and the rewards and retribution that will then be meted out.

The prophet then goes on to comfort the people, describing G‑d’s power and might, and reassuring them of His care for His people.

Ongoing Mitzvah Opportunity

One of our founding members, Rachel Perez, widow of Elias Perez, is homebound and would greatly appreciate mid-day visits. If you are able to do this tremendous Mitzvah it would be greatly appreciated. Rachel lives about a mile from shul. The visits do not have to be long, nor does anyone have to make a long-term commitment. Simply popping in from time to time, when you are available, would be wonderful. Please respond to this message if you are able to do this beautiful Mitzvah.

Volunteering

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going strong for three years! It was sponsored by Channah Hale and now carried on in her memory.

We are at the point that we need NEW volunteers to drive and deliver food packages around the area.

Please consider making this a part of your Friday routine. Volunteers pick up a few containers of soup and bags of challah at 3:00pm and delivering them to the door of the recipients. Volunteers also get soup and challah!

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Membership

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!

We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - Now

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Send a personal email to  [email protected] to schedule an appointment today.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to  [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

B"H

MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

One of Moses’ most important acts in his final days was translating the entire Torah into 70 languages. Although the Jewish people at the time had no need for translations, Moses foresaw the Diaspora and knew that without translation Torah would be lost.

But it couldn’t be left to future generations to determine when and how to translate it; Moses recognized that in order for the translation to be valid and accurate, it had to contain the same holiness as the Torah itself, in its original language. In other words, it had to be translated by Moses himself, the author of the Torah and the only human who knew precisely the true meaning of every word.

Even though we don’t have his original translations, and even though the languages we speak today may not have even been around back then, in his final days, Moses was making the Torah accessible and relevant to us, so that we are able to study it, wherever we are, in any language, and apply it to our circumstances.

We hope and pray that we will very soon be able to hear a revelation of the deepest components of Torah, in all languages, taught to us by Moshiach, with the upcoming redemption!

Membership means that you make a financial commitment to help maintain the Jewish community of the North County Coastal region and our three centers.

Can we count on you?

DUE-DATE APPROACHING - It’s Calendar Time

We are starting our annual calendar campaign at this time. Chabad’s Jewish Art Calendar is a beautiful collection of Jewish art, explanations of important dates, recipes and a lot more. Best of all our calendars are customized for our community, which really makes the calendar OURS. We print and distribute hundreds of calendars all across north county and beyond, so it is an opportune time for businesses to advertise while at the same time supporting the shul.

Advertise in the Chabad Art Calendar

Sponsor Birthdays, Anniversaries, and Yarzeits.

We are looking for a sponsor who would like to dedicate this year’s edition. Sponsorship starts at $3,600 and allows us to raise much-needed funds through the ads.

Dedicate your Birthday, Anniversary or Yarzeit at chabadatlacosta.com/artcalendar. You can even upload your Business Card!

Kiddush Sponsor

This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored by the shul in loving memory of Channah/Addy Hale on the eleventh month since her passing.

A big Yasher Koach to our volunteer deliverers - Carrie Rossenfeld, Marcia Keisman, and David & Annie Endres.

Haftarah for Week 3 of the Three Weeks of Mourning. Shabbos Parshas Devarim

Jeremiah 2:4–28; 4:1–2.

This week’s haftorah is the second of a series of three “haftarot of affliction.” These three haftarot are read during the Three Weeks of mourning for Jerusalem, between the fasts of 17 Tammuz and 9 Av.

The prophet Jeremiah transmits G‑d’s message to the Jewish people, in strong tones chastising all the sectors of the people, including the leadership, for their abandonment of G‑d. “What wrong did your forefathers find in Me, that they distanced themselves from Me, and they went after futility and themselves became futile?” He reminds them of the kindness G‑d did for them, taking them out of Egypt and leading them through the desert and settling them in the Promised Land, yet they repaid kindness with disloyalty. “For My people have committed two evils; they have forsaken Me, the spring of living waters, [and furthermore, this was in order] to dig for themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that do not hold water.”

G‑d asks them to view the actions of their neighboring nations, the Kittites and Kedarites, “and see whether there was any such thing, whether a nation exchanged a god, although they are not gods. Yet My nation exchanged their glory for what does not avail.”

Jeremiah then goes on to foretell the suffering the Jewish people will suffer at the hands of their enemies, and also their erstwhile allies: “Your evil will chastise you, and you will be rebuked for your backslidings; and you shall know and see that your forsaking the L‑rd your G‑d is evil and bitter.”

The haftorah ends on an encouraging note, assuring the people that if they return to G‑d with sincerity, they will be restored to their full glory.

In this week’s Torah portion we read about the Jewish people’s 42 encampments in the desert throughout their 40-year trek from Egypt to the Promised Land. Interestingly, the Torah doesn’t refer to them as stops or stations, but as journeys.

A station implies that you’ve reached somewhat of a destination; you start out on a trip and then you reach your destination, ending the trip. But in truth, each of these 42 stops that our ancestors made was a journey of its own.

A journey implies that there is still work to be done; you may have reached yesterday’s goal, but today there is more to accomplish. If a stop was treated as an end goal, there would be no motivation to keep going. So as the Jews reached each station, they knew that it was just another step in the bigger journey toward the Land of Israel.

We too, as we journey through life in our current exile, must not become complacent or satisfied with our daily accomplishments. Sure, compared to yesterday, what we did today is an accomplishment. But there is still work to be done.

Our journey will only be completed with the coming of Moshiach and the rebuilding of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem, may it happen speedily in our times!

Shabbat shalom,

The Nine Days

The Code of Jewish Law / Shulchan Aruch states that when the month of Av begins we are meant to decrease our joy, as we commemorate the destruction of both Holy Temples on the 9th of Av. During the nine days, and really through midday on the 10, we do not eat meat or drink wine (other than on Shabbos), we do not take long, luxurious baths/showers, we do not wear freshly laundered clothing, we do not take any unnecessary risks, we do not listen to music, nor get married, nor hold celebrations, we do not buy or wear new clothes, and we are generally more ‘sober’ in our daily lives.

There is a fascinating Chasidic interpretation of the above-mentioned law. It states, “When the month of Av enters minimize it, (how?) through Simcha/Joy! The commentaries point out that the destruction of the Holy Temples is actually a great demonstration of G-d’s love for His people, for the destruction rained down on the ‘brick and mortar’ of the buildings rather than the utter destruction of our people.

The Nine Days culminate with the approximately 25-hour fast on the 9th of Av. This years it comes out on Wednesday evening, July 26th (fast begins at 7:53pm) and concludes on Thursday night, July 27th (fast ends at 8:20pm). We do not eat/drink, bathe, anoint ourselves with oils, wear leather shoes, or engage in marital intimacy. We also do not learn Torah other than portions dealing with the fast, for Torah study gladdens the heart. Men do not put on Tefillin during the morning of the 9th, but instead only do so during the afternoon.

Our schedule will include the evening service on Wednesday at 8pm and the communal reading of the Book of Lamentations. On Thursday morning services (without Tallis and Tefillin) will begin at 8:30am and be followed by the reading of the book of Kinus (a poetical book that describes the catastrophe of the Destruction and other calamities that befell our people on the 9th of Av). The afternoon service, which is where we will don the Tallis and Tefillin, will take place at 7pm. Light refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the fast.

It is critical that we have Minyanim at these services, so please let us know that you can come. Everyone is welcome for all of the services.

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY RESPONDED!

It’s a New Membership Year – TIME TO SIGN UP!

Dear Friends,

We strive to be here for our shul family 24/7, through offering services, gatherings, education, counseling, pastoral services and so much more. The only way we are able to provide these much-needed programs is through the financial support of those who benefit from and believe in our services.

It’s Calendar Time

Kiddush Sponsor

This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored by Miriam Reisman in memory of Harold Reisman.

It is being cosponsored by the Mintz Family in memory of Marcus Mintz.

It is being cosponsored by Len Hyman in memory of Max Hyman.

A big Yasher Koach to our volunteer deliverers - Carrie Rossenfeld, Marcia Keisman, and David & Annie Endres.

Haftarah for Week 2 of the Three Weeks of Mourning

There are several fast days on the Jewish calendar, most of which mark various tragedies in our history. One of them is observed this Thursday, the 17th of Tammuz, which has a storied history, including being the day Moses broke the first set of Tablets and also the day the walls of Jerusalem were breached prior to the second Temple’s destruction.

But our fast days are not intended merely to be days of mourning, remembering and crying over the past. We also pray and plead to G-d that as a people we experience better times. Of course, these prayers contain an element of penitence, where we commit to living a better life and in return we ask G-d to turn things around for us too.

In fact, we are guaranteed that such a time will come, when the darkness will be transformed into light and all our days of sadness will becomes days of joy and celebration, with the coming of Moshiach, very soon!

Kiddush Sponsor

This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored by Avi and Carrie Rossenfeld in honor of the Yarzeit of Morris / Moshe Mendel Rossenfeld (Avi’s father).

A big Yasher Koach to our volunteer deliverers - Carrie Rossenfeld, Sholom Eilfort, David & Annie Endres.

Challah is delivered to Mental Health Residential Centers in the area, people undergoing chemotherapy, and people who really love the addition to their Shabbos experience.

Deliver and get a bag of challah for your family as well!

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE
Rabbi's Letter | Thought for the Week | Haftarah

Haftarah for Week 1 of the Three Weeks of Mourning

Jeremiah 1:1-2:3.

This week's haftorah is the first of a series of three "haftorot of affliction." These three haftarot are read during the Three Weeks of mourning for Jerusalem, between the fasts of 17 Tammuz and 9 Av.

Jeremiah recounts how G‑d appointed him as prophet — despite his initial reluctance to accept the task — and tells of the encouragement G‑d gave him to fulfill his crucial mission.

He then describes two prophetic visions he was shown. The first featured an almond tree branch. G‑d explained to Jeremiah that just like an almond tree is very quick to blossom, so too G‑d will carry out his plan — to punish the Jews for their sins — in due haste.

The second vision was that of a boiling pot whose foam was directed northward. G‑d explained that this was an allusion to the afflictions the Jewish people would suffer at the hands of the people from the north of the Holy Land, namely Babylon. G‑d will cause the kingdoms of the north to lay siege on Jerusalem and Judea and He will pass judgment on the Jewish people due to their abandonment of G‑d's ways and their idol worship.

G‑d then encouraged Jeremiah to deliver the prophecy and not to fear the Jewish populace who would certainly not take kindly to such harsh words.

The haftorah ends with a reassuring prophecy to the people: "Go and call out in the ears of Jerusalem, saying: so said G‑d: 'I remember to you the loving-kindness of your youth, the love of your nuptials, your following Me in the desert, in a land not sown. Israel is holy to G‑d, the first of His grain; all who eat him shall be guilty, evil shall befall them, says G‑d.'"
