MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are called “Aseret Yemei Teshuvah,” often translated as “The 10 Days of Repentance,” but the truth is that the Hebrew word “teshuvah” is better translated as “return” rather than “repentance.”

While emphasis on repenting for our past misdeeds is indeed laudable, the primary focus must be on repairing our relationship with G-d. That’s what “return” means. Throughout the year we may have strayed, our relationship with G-d may have taken a hit, but during these 10 days we have the opportunity to return to our true selves.

This is even more so on Yom Kippur itself, the day that the essence of our souls is revealed. More than mere repentance, and even more than returning, we discover that we never really left. Despite everything we may have done, the deepest part of us—our G-dly essence—was never affected; and we discover that on Yom Kippur.

May you and your family be sealed for a great year!

Living with the Times

Parshat Ha’azinu-Shabbat Shuvah 5781

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

This Shabbos we read the portion titled “Ha’azinu” which means to hearken. The portion is primarily a warning of the consequences of disloyalty and betrayal. If the Jewish people will make poor choices, G-d forbid, there will be consequences – sometimes very harsh. Moshe imparted these words of wisdom in a poetical form. This particular song is written in a unique style within the Torah scroll, with each column split signifying that is a song or poem. Speaking of unique, in general we do not commit to memory the exact wording of the Torah, and if we do know it by heart we do not recite the words by heart. This portion we specifically do try to commit to memory so that we can recite it by heart.

We see that Moses invoked Heaven and Earth to serve as witnesses to the warning he would utter. That is so no subsequent generation could claim that the warning was never issued, Heaven and Earth will ‘testify’ to the contrary.

It cannot be emphasized enough how important, how very crucial it is for our continued existence as a nation with a specifically ordained divine mission, to look to our Torah for guidance. Moses, who has always and will always be intrinsically connected with the Torah, knew that his time as leader was rapidly coming to an end. Joshua was prepared to take over the mantle of leadership, and would in fact prove to be a great leader. But Moses was so intimately connected with his people that he was compelled to illustrate in stark relief the necessity of remaining true to the wishes of the Almighty. Articulating this admonition/warning poetically certainly emphasizes the need for its scrupulous observance. And just in case one doesn’t quite ‘get’ the centrality of this contract, we developed the custom of committing these sacred words to memory.

This Shabbos is called Shabbat Shuva – it is the Shabbos of repentance. From the first day of the New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the conclusion of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, it is a time of serious and continual self-reflection. In fact, it is always an appropriate time to return to G-d through feeling genuine regret for our sins, specifying those sins to the Almighty, and resolving to not repeat them. But there are designated times that are more conducive for this particular form of Divine service. The 10 Days of Repentance are certainly a most conducive time. Within those 10 days we will always have a Shabbat occur. Shabbat itself is conducive to the notion of Teshuvah. This Shabbos is particularly fit for this purpose, as our minds are already more sensitized to our relationship with Our Father Our King.

The beautiful thing is that the more aware we are of G-d in our lives the stronger the connection between ourselves and our Creator becomes. This feeling of closeness brings us to a state of inner peace, happiness, contentment with our physical belongings, and an enhanced desire for the spiritual riches our tradition offers us.

May we all be sealed in the Book of Life and have a meaningful (and easy) fast.

Wishing everyone an uplifting, joyous, and HEALTHY Shabbos & Shanah Tovah!

Haftarah Thought From: Chabad.org

Shabbat Shuvah:
Hosea 14:2-10; Micah 7:18-20.

The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is known as Shabbat Shuva or "Shabbat of Return (Repentance)." The name is a reference to the opening words of the week's haftorah, "Shuva Israel — Return O Israel." This haftorah is read in honor of the Ten Days of Repentance, the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The prophet Hosea exhorts the Jewish people to "Return, O Israel, to the L-rd your G‑d," encouraging them to repent sincerely and ask for G‑d's forgiveness. Hosea urges the Jews to put their trust in G‑d, not in Assyria, powerful horses or idols. At that point, G‑d promises to remove His anger from Israel, "I will be like dew to Israel, they shall blossom like a rose." The prophet then goes on to foretell the return of the exiles and the cessation of idol-worship amongst the people.

The haftorah concludes with a  brief portion from the Book of Micah, which describes G‑d's kindness in forgiving the sins of His people. "He does not maintain His anger forever, for He is a lover of kindness. He will have mercy on us, He will grasp our iniquities and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea." Micah concludes with an enjoinder to G‑d to remember the pacts He made with the Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Yom Kippur Morning:
Isaiah 57:14-58:14

Today's haftorah discusses the concepts of repentance and fasting, the theme du jour of Yom Kippur.

The prophecy begins with the words "Pave, pave, clear the way; remove the obstacles from the way of My people." A reference to the Yetzer Hara ("evil inclination") which must be removed to pave the way for sincere repentance. G‑d assures that He will not be forever angry at those who repent, and that instead He will heal them and lead them. The wicked, on the other hand, are compared to a turbulent sea: "there is no peace for the wicked."

G‑d exhorts the prophet Isaiah to admonish the people regarding their fasting ways which G‑d finds reprehensible — a message which resonated to this very day:

"Daily they pretend to seek Me, desiring knowledge of My ways . . . 'Why have we fasted and You did not see?' they ask. 'We have afflicted our soul and You do not know?' Behold, on the day of your fast you pursue your affairs, and from all your debtors you forcibly exact payment. Behold, for quarrel and strife you fast, and to strike with a fist of wickedness. You do not fast in keeping with the spirit of the day, to make your voice heard on high. Is this a fast that I will choose? . . . Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush and spread out sackcloth and ashes beneath him?"

Instead, Isaiah teaches the Jews the proper way to fast:

"Loosen the fetters of wickedness, untie the bands of perverseness, send the oppressed free, and break every oppressive yoke. Offer your bread to the hungry, bring the wandering poor into your home. When you see someone naked, clothe him . . . Then you shall call and the L-rd shall answer, you shall cry and He shall say, 'Here I am.' . . . G‑d will always guide you and satiate your soul with radiance; He will strengthen your bones and you will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never cease..."

The haftorah concludes with the promise of great rewards for those who honor and take delight in the Shabbat.

Yom Kippur Afternoon:

Book of Jonah; Micha 7:18-20.

The entire Book of Jonah is read today as it contains an important and timely message on prayer and repentance. Click here for more on the connection between the Book of Jonah and Yom Kippur.

G‑d ordered the prophet Jonah to travel to Nineveh and present its wicked inhabitants with an ultimatum: repent or be destroyed. Jonah refused to comply with this directive, and fled on a boat. Strong winds threatened to destroy the ship, lots were cast among the crew and passengers and the lottery indicated that Jonah was the cause of the turbulent storm. He admitted his guilt and requested to be cast into the sea. Jonah was thrown into the raging sea and the storm abated.

Jonah was swallowed by a big fish, and while in its belly, was moved to repent. The fish regurgitated Jonah.

Jonah proceeded to Nineveh and broadcasted G‑d's word that Nineveh would be overturned in forty days. The people fasted and repented and the divine decree was annulled. When Jonah expressed his displeasure with this result, G‑d taught him a lesson. As Jonah sat on the outskirts of the city, the kikayon plant which was providing him with shade was destroyed by a worm, and Jonah was very upset. "And G‑d said: You took pity on the kikayon, for which you did not toil nor did you make it grow, which one night came into being and the next night perished. Now should I not take pity on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are many more than one hundred twenty thousand people?..."

SHABBOS NEWS
We are Open for Services.

Shabbat & Yom Kippur Services are Inside OR Outside! It is YOUR Choice!

Due to the updated guidelines issued by the Governor’s office and with the agreement from Rabbinic authorities we will be offering services this Shabbos and on Yom Kippur INSIDE of the sanctuary AND outside in the breezeway. We will be keeping our occupancy at 25% of capacity inside – so please, if you wish to join us, immediately log onto www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/hhrsvp. Those who wish to sit in the breezeway for services are welcome to do so.

Please note that we have invested heavily so as to be able to open up safely and comfortably. In fact, we are exceeding the protocols called for by the governmental agencies. You might say that, “We answer to a Higher Authority.”

Masks are available for those attending services, which must be worn at all times while on campus, as well as gloves for those who wish to wear them.

All of these measures taken together with the procedures already established, which include the use of hand sanitizer and handwashing regularly, sanitized prayers books, sanitized restrooms and surfaces etc., will produce a safe experience.

If you have been exposed to anyone with the virus within the last 14 days, those with symptoms, or those whose doctors advise them not to participate, should not, under any circumstances, come to shul. But rather should pray at home.

If you plan on joining us on Shabbos please let us know by responding to this message.

Working Car (still) Needed

We are currently seeking a car in good mechanical condition. If you, or someone you know, has a car that you can donate please respond to this message. This request is time sensitive. Thank you in advance!

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - Tuition Free Hebrew School

Due to the economic hardships created by the pandemic we will be offering Tuition Free Hebrew School this year. Families are struggling to make ends meet, but we cannot allow the children to suffer. We are offering two options – In-person learning (outdoor and indoor classes, socially distant, masks on), and virtual learning. Please respond to this message for further information. We are the only synagogue in the county making such an offer! Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.

Special ‘Different’ Yom Kippur Services this Year

Be prepared for a different looking High Holiday experience. We know that masks are not fun. We also understand that up-tempo services are not what we are used to, especially on the High Holidays. But we also know that Judaism teaches us that the sanctity of life takes precedence over all other considerations.

We appreciate your support and understanding as we navigate this unprecedented situation. We remain steadfastly committed to serving our community and doing so in a safe and secure manner.

If there is something that you need please do not hesitate to contact us!

Additional Outside Yizkor Services Offered

Those who feel the need or desire to say Yizkor specifically at shul, but are concerned with being at shul for an extended period, are welcome to come to one of the two additional outdoor Yizkor services we have scheduled (see below). These services will be outside and brief.

Outdoor Shofar Blowing

The end of Yom Kippur is marked by the Ne’ilah / Closing service, the culmination of which is the blowing of the Shofar. In our effort to help everyone stay safe and feel comfortable the Rabbi will blow the Shofar and recite the associated passages at the entry gate to our campus. This means that people can remain in the parking lot or in the breezeway or in the sanctuary and be able to hear the Shofar.

Calendar Delayed – Our Apologies!

We are sorry that we are running very late in getting out our Jewish Art Calendar this year. To make a long story short the pandemic has made planning the year exceedingly difficult, which has impacted our timing. We will get them out asap! THANK YOU for your understanding and patience. J

Chicken Soup & Challah

We are extraordinarily proud of the fact that we have provided chicken soup and challah from the beginning of the pandemic. During this time we have distributed thousands of challahs and servings of soup, at no cost, to our community and those in need. We have been able to do this due to the generosity of our sponsors (best in the world!) and our outstanding volunteers. Let’s face it; we are blessed to have such a beautiful community!

Chicken Soup and Challah Available THIS Week

Those who live near Chabad at La Costa are welcome to let us know if you want some delicious Challah and/or Chicken Soup delivered to you on Friday to help you celebrate Shabbat in the most delicious way possible.

Sponsors Appreciated (And Needed)

These are extraordinary times. Many people are reaching out for help and, Baruch Hashem / thank G-d, we are HERE to help! ‘We’ means YOU and US, TOGETHER. It is an amazing partnership that we have!

We are extremely grateful to those who have reached out to help fund us, enabling us to serve others.

We would like to specifically acknowledge at this time:

Channah Hale for her generous sponsorship of the Challahs. Channah has been absolutely phenomenal in her generous sponsorships! We thank her for her kindness and love. This week Channah has sponsored in memory of David Glovsky and Doris Bornstein, may their memories be for a blessing!

We are seeking additional sponsors for the following dedications:

Next week’s Loaves of Love.

Next week’s Chicken soup.

Next week’s Torah classes.

Note About Sponsorships

You may have noticed that we seek multiple sponsors for the Challah, Soup, and Torah classes. We do this because we need to find ways to cover our budgetary shortfall that has been caused by the coronavirus. The donations coming to the shul have been dramatically reduced. We greatly appreciate those of you who are still supporting us! G-d bless you! We greatly appreciate your understanding as we seek ways of propping up the income necessary to keep things afloat. Your ideas about additional income streams are likewise greatly appreciated!

Ways to Give

We would be nowhere without the generous support of our community. Please know that your support is profoundly appreciated!

Do you have a birthday coming up? We would be honored if you would consider making our shul the recipient of your birthday fundraiser.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to celebrate your birthday and do a wonderful Mitzvah at the same time? Thank you for your consideration and Happy Birthday!

What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - NOW

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will  your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want. Send a personal email to   [email protected] to schedule an appointment today. Click here for a Declaration of Intent and more information.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing’. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $500 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to   [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

In addition to the many other ways this year’s High Holidays will be different, one thing that stands out to me is that on the first day of Rosh Hashanah we will not blow the shofar. Because it is Shabbat, the shofar is not sounded, and the last time that happened was 11 years ago.

The sages of the Talmud forbade blowing the shofar when it is Shabbat, for fear that it would lead to violating the laws of Shabbat (specifically the laws of carrying an object in a public domain).

Under normal circumstances, the mitzvah of blowing shofar should have overridden the concern of a potential Shabbat violation. Yet shofar is still suspended, because all the spiritual achievements that are accomplished through the blowing of shofar are fulfilled this year simply by Rosh Hashanah being on Shabbat. There is therefore no need to blow the shofar at all.

And since Rosh Hashanah is the head of the year, the entire year will be imbued with a sense of Shabbat, heightened spiritual awareness every day of year, which will lead to the ultimate Shabbat, the coming of Moshiach!

May you be inscribed and sealed for a good and sweet year!

Thought for the Week | Haftarah | Rabbi's Letter

Our Community’s Response to the Pandemic

5780 is nearly complete. Rosh Hashanah, our New Year and new beginning will be ushered in this coming Friday night. There is no doubt that this year has included severe challenges for us personally and communally. We began the year dealing with Nechama's breast cancer and subsequent surgery, went on to grapple with coronavirus (which we are still battling), experienced civil unrest, and are still fighting unprecedented wild fires.

The politically motivated finger pointing has been a constant, driving wedges between friends, families, and communities alike. People have stopped seeing other people and instead see political allies or enemies. We are viewing others as walking ideologies instead of fellow human beings. There will be NO politics from our pulpit! Shul is meant to be in a sanctuary, a place where we come to connect with G-d and each other.

What has been our response to these numerous challenges?

THANKS TO YOU, our amazing friends and supporters, we have fought the darkness in the most effective way possible, by adding light! Following is a short list of what we have done and/or what we are doing to make our corner of this world a brighter place.

Tuition-free Hebrew School ! The Jewish education of our youth MUST continue! The economic situation is tough, but we are tougher. If you know of a Jewish child who needs Hebrew school (in person or via Zoom) LET US KNOW. We thank our amazing visionaries whose dedication and generosity allow us to take this unprecedented step of fully subsidized tuition in educating our youth!

Challahs and Chicken Soup . Over the last six months we have distributed THOUSANDS of Challahs and Chicken Soups bringing the beauty and spirit of Shabbat into homes throughout North County. Special thank you to Channah Hale and many others, including our incredible corps of volunteers, who have made this possible! If you want some just let us know!

Safe & Secure In-Person High Holiday Services . If you wish to join us for safe and secure High Holiday services simply log onto www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/hhrsvp and reserve your spot. No tickets. Donate what you feel comfortable giving. We do have a very limited number of seats available and therefore reservations are required. We will not only be exceeding all recommended protocols regarding coronavirus, we will also have a professional, uniformed security guard.

DIY (Do It Yourself) Care Packages . For Passover it was 'Seder in a Box' for hundreds. Then Shavuot came and we made sure hundreds of gift bags went out filled with delicious food, profound Torah thoughts, and a guide for holiday observance. Now it is the High Holidays and we are in the midst of delivering hundreds more gift bags, including a special effort to reach our local Jewish seniors - letting them know they are not forgotten during this crisis. Honey Cakes, Israeli Honey, Fresh-Baked Challos, an informative Holiday Guide, a Yizkor Memorial Prayer Book, even a Children's Activity book and gift, and much more are all included! We are determined to help YOU celebrate the High Holidays in the most meaningful way possible. We will NOT allow coronavirus to get us down. If you are local and want a holiday gift bag all you have to do is let us know.

Lulav Esrog Sets for EVERYONE (regardless of ability to pay) . An anonymous donor has stepped forward to subsidize Lulav and Esrog sets for everyone who wants one. If you are local and commit to using it during the holiday of Sukkot we will provide one to you, free of charge (additional sponsors GREATLY appreciated). Simply respond to this message. MANY THANKS to our incredible donor and to Esrogino for making this happen!

Pay-What-You-Can-Membership . We want the membership experience to be positive. We want you to feel GOOD about giving. Yes, we have suggested donations, but you should give what you feel you can afford. If you cannot comfortably give the suggested amount THAT IS OK. If you can give more than the suggested amount, THANK YOU, IT IS APPRECIATED! We love and appreciate your participation, and that is that. Please fill out our Membership form online by logging onto: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/Membership.

Daily & Weekly Classes . Join us, at no cost, on Facebook Live (must friend request Yeruchem Eilfort if you are not already my friend) and be a member of the Chabad at La Costa Facebook page for ongoing classes in Chasidic Philosophy, Caffeine for the Soul, Torah Portion of the Week, Positivity Bias, Holiday Overviews, and much more. Torah study is THE way to keep the soul charged!

Thousands of Dollars Given in Direct Financial Grants . Our profound thanks go out to Gordon Levinson, and others, for their generous grants that have been distributed through the synagogue to dozens of needy families and individuals! We have helped people with their rent and other bills on an emergency basis. Tens of thousands of dollars have been distributed based upon the needs of people, real people, who are in difficult situations.

Safe & Secure Shabbat & Holiday Services . We are meeting and exceeding recommended safety protocols as we conduct our services. In this regard there will be no compromises. If your doctor says it is ok and you are comfortable we want to see you here! Every Saturday at 10am and on holidays at indicated times.

Heartfelt Appeal .

We are here to enhance/empower your Jewish experience. That is our unshakeable commitment to you. We are able to do this because of our generous donors, without whom we would be nowhere. Can we possibly convince you to make a monthly gift to the community? Every donor counts! Every donation counts! Please add your name to our growing list of supporters. The added expenses of this year are presenting a special opportunity for our friends to step forward and make a difference. Please do what you can: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate.

Thank you! G-d bless you! May you and your family be written and sealed in the Book of Life!

Article of the Week,  Living with the Times

Rosh Hashanah 5781

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

This week we are not only celebrating Shabbos, but we are also ushering in a New Year, 5781. Many of us are uttering a sigh of relief as we close the door on 5780. In Hebrew we write out 5780 as Tav Shin Pay, which some have read as Tihay Shnas Pandemic (It will be the year of pandemic). According to that reading we are entering Tav Shin Pay Alef - Tihay Shnas AIN Pandemic – It will be the year WITHOUT pandemic.

In all seriousness no one would argue that this has been a stress free year. Between covid with its death tolls, national lockdowns, and massive unemployment, civil unrest, and vast and destructive wildfires, 5780 has been a truly memorable year that we all would sooner forget. We look forward hopefully, wistfully even, for a better tomorrow. A great Rabbi once said that life is like a giant wheel that is continually turning. You should not lose hope, even when on the bottom, for when you are on the bottom you can only go up. G-d willing it is our time to go up! In fact the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous memory, wrote in a thought published in 5751 (30 years ago) that this year will be Tihay Shnas Pila’os Arenu – It will be the year that I (G-d) will show you wonders! Amen – so may it be!

We will stand before Almighty G-d and beseech Him for a year of blessing and success. When we listen to the clarion call of the Shofar on Sunday we will again accept G-d as our King, we will remind G-d (and ourselves) of the Jewish legacy of total dedication to Him even to the extent of self-sacrifice, and we will return to our loving Father in Heaven by thoroughly repenting for our trespasses of this past year. Of course Rosh Hashanah begins on Shabbos, the holy day, which means this will be a year infused with the blessings of Shabbos. And for those of you who study Jewish texts you realize that the future era, the times of Moshiach are going to be a time of enhanced G-dly revelations – and that our current Shabbos is a foretaste of that time.

This morning when I arose in the predawn hours I was thinking about my theme for the sermons I will deliver on Rosh Hashanah. Of course I have been thinking about it, and actually working on it, for weeks already. In fact it says in the official Rabbi’s handbook that any Rabbi who does not start thinking about his High Holiday sermons by the end of Chanukah is derelict in his duties, but now, in the last moments, the theme of the sermon fills our consciousness. I was thinking about last year’s Rosh Hashanah and wondering, “WHAT HAPPENED?! How did we end up here?!”

And then I decided to count my blessings. (Disclaimer: you are about to see a whole bunch of exclamation points because I am having trouble containing my enthusiasm.) I watched my loved ones sleeping peacefully in their beds. I looked out of my window and saw a beautiful world around me. Then I looked back at my house as I was pulling out and thinking, “Wow! That is MY house (technically it is still the bank’s, but you get the gist).” I came to our gorgeous shul and slowly took in its beauty, particularly the sanctuary, and I thought about the meaning of sanctuary and how our shul provides it. I thought about my family, friends, and community and continued to count my blessings. So many blessings! I thought about the relative peacefulness in the Holy Land and marveled at the new Abraham Accords, bringing a measure of peace between Israel and some of her Arab neighbors. That is something I had serious doubts that I would ever see in my lifetime. Now I think, I truly believe, more of the same is coming!

And then it dawned on me; I am feeling overwhelmingly OPTIMISTIC about 5781!

While I staunchly believe in Divine Providence, that G-d guides our steps and leads us where we need to go, I also believe that we play an indispensable part in where that path leads us. I firmly believe that we can will a positive year filled to overflowing with Divine Blessings! I am absolutely positive that with a positive attitude based upon gratitude for all that I have, that I am MORE LIKELY to see those blessings in a revealed way. And I am absolutely sure those blessings are available to each and every one of us!

Wishing everyone an uplifting, joyous, and HEALTHY Shabbos & Shanah Tovah!

Haftarah Thought  From: Chabad.org

Day 1:
I Samuel 1:1–2:10

The haftorah for the first day of Rosh Hashanah describes the birth of the prophet Samuel to Elkanah and his wife Chanah, who had been childless for many years. This echoes the story discussed in the day’s Torah reading, about Sarah giving birth to Isaac after many years of childlessness.

During one of her annual pilgrimages to Shiloh, the site of the Tabernacle, Chanah tearfully and quietly entreated G‑d to bless her with a son, promising to dedicate him to His service. Eli the high priest saw her whispering, and berated her, thinking that she was a drunkard. After hearing Chanah’s explanation, that she had been whispering in prayer, Eli blessed her that G‑d should grant her request.

Chana conceived and gave birth to a son whom she called Shmuel (Samuel). Once the child was weaned, she brought him to Shiloh and entrusted him to the care of Eli.

The haftorah ends with Chanah’s prayer, wherein she thanks G‑d for granting her wish, extols His greatness, exhorts the people not to be haughty or arrogant, and prophesies regarding the Messianic redemption.

Day 2:
Jeremiah 31:1–19

The haftorah for the second day of Rosh Hashanah talks about G‑d’s everlasting love for His people, and the future ingathering of their exiles. In the last verse of this hauntingly beautiful haftorah, G‑d says, “Is Ephraim [i.e., the Children of Israel] not My beloved son? Is he not a precious child, that whenever I speak of him I recall him even more?” This follows one of the primary themes of the Rosh Hashanah prayers, our attempt to induce G‑d to remember us in a positive light on this Day of Judgment.

Jeremiah begins by affirming G‑d’s love for the Jewish people. “With everlasting love I have loved you; therefore I have drawn lovingkindness over you.”

Because of this love, G‑d assures His nation that they have a very bright future awaiting them. “I will yet build you up, then you shall be built forever, O virgin of Israel; you will yet adorn yourself with your tambourines, and go forth in joyous dance.” Jeremiah then describes the ingathering of the exiles, when all of Israel will be returned to the Holy Land: “You will again plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria . . . Behold, I will bring [Israel] from the land of the north, and gather them from the ends of the earth . . . a large assembly will return here. Weeping with joy they will come, and with compassion I will lead them . . . I will turn their mourning into joy, and will console them and gladden them after their sorrow.”

Jeremiah then describes the heavenly scene, where the silence is broken by the sound of bitter weeping. Our Matriarch Rachel refuses to be consoled, for her children have been exiled. G‑d responds: “Still your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears . . . There is hope for your future; the children shall return to their border.”

SHABBOS NEWS
We are Open for Services for the High Holidays!!

High Holiday Services are Inside OR Outside! It is YOUR Choice!

Due to the updated guidelines issued by the Governor’s office and with the agreement from Rabbinic authorities we will be offering services this Shabbos INSIDE of the sanctuary AND outside in the breezeway.

We have newly installed shade ‘sails’ over our patios enabling us to offer more covered seating outside. A sincere thank you to Jon and Julie Rozansky for sponsoring the sails!

We have also bought partitions so that the Torah reader is divided from the person called to the Torah for an Aliyah. Air purifiers / HEPA filters have also been bought.

With that being said we remind everyone that those who have been exposed to anyone with the virus within the last 14 days, those with symptoms, or those whose doctors advise them not to participate, should not, under any circumstances, come to shul.

Weekly Sermon Friday @ 5pm on Facebook Live

Join Rabbi Eilfort this afternoon at 5pm as he gives his weekly sermon as a Facebook Live event. If you have not already done so, please send Rabbi Eilfort (Yeruchem Eilfort) a Friend Request on Facebook!

Rosh Hashanah Gift Bags – Volunteers Needed

Thanks to some very generous sponsors we are sending out gorgeous Rosh Hashanah gift bags. These will be delivered today and tomorrow. They include delicious honey cake, challos, and Israeli honey. In addition there will be High Holiday guides, A Yizkor Memorial booklet, a Holiday Prayer Book for children, tea lights, and other brochures about upcoming programming. If you would like a gift bag please let us know (we don’t read minds).

If you are available to help deliver them please let us know right away!

We would like to thank our sponsors including Ilyse Loven, Angela Chapman, and Larry Gelberg for their generosity! Additional sponsors are still welcome: Donations can be made securely online by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate.

In-person High Holidays Services Planned – Please Reserve TODAY – VERY Limited Seating Available

Our High Holiday plans have been formulated. We will be sending out a form and brochure with all of the details in the near future. Please make sure to save the dates. As of now our plan is to hold services indoors and outdoors as per current governmental mandates. To make your reservations now follow this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/hhrsvp.

If there is a program or if there is something that you need please do not hesitate to contact us!

We are extremely grateful to those who have reached out to help fund us, enabling us to serve others.

There are many ways to donate besides for checks and cash. Following please find a list of the various other ‘platforms’ that are available for secure donations that go directly and entirely into the synagogue account.

1. PayPal  [email protected] or PayPal.me/Neilfort

Easy Fundraising Opportunity

First, let us take this opportunity to thank all of those who have had Facebook Birthday Fundraisers for Chabad at La Costa! I cannot tell you how much Nechama & I appreciate it! The money we have received through these fundraisers has helped our shul continue with programming, delivering soup and challah as well as other activities.

Join Rabbi Yossi Rodal on Facebook Live on Saturday night at 8:30pm for a meaningful Havdalah service. Following Havdalah Rabbi Yossi will share an uplifting Chasidic story as is traditional on Saturday night.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting.

Hebrew School & C-Kids

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Currently Distance Learning with Zoom! Our students want to be here!

Please contact our Hebrew School Director, Morah Chaya Eilfort for info at   [email protected].

Our Response to Adversity

Our Response to Adversity

Dear Friend,

Tuition-free Hebrew School!

Challos and Chicken Soup. Over the last six months we have distributed THOUSANDS of Challos and Chicken Soups bringing the beauty and spirit of Shabbat into homes throughout North County. Special thank you to Channah Hale and many others, including our incredible corps of volunteers, who have made this possible! If you want some just let us know!

Safe & Secure In-Person High Holiday Services.

DIY (Do It Yourself) Care Packages.

Lulav & Esrog Sets for EVERYONE (regardless of ability to pay).

Pay-What-You-Can-Membership.

Daily & Weekly Classes.

Thousands of Dollars Given in Direct Financial Grants.

Safe & Secure Shabbat & Holiday Services. We are meeting and exceeding recommended safety protocols as we conduct our services. In this regard there will be no compromises. If your doctor says it is ok and you are comfortable we want to see you here! Every Saturday at 10am and on holidays at indicated times.

Heartfelt Appeal.

Sincerely,

Rabbi Eilfort

MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

At or around midnight the Saturday night before Rosh Hashanah is when most Jewish communities around the world begin reciting Selichot—the penitential prayers in preparation for the High Holidays.

A story is told about Rabbi Shmuel Munkes, a disciple of the Alter Rebbe (founder of Chabad), a very devout and spiritual man with a strong sense of humor.

One year, as he traveled to be with his Rebbe for Rosh Hashanah, he spent Shabbat at a roadside inn owned by an elderly Jewish couple. At midnight, the owners dutifully roused their guests to join them at the local synagogue for Selichot. When they came to Rabbi Shmuel’s room, he seemed confused.

“Why are you waking me up in the middle of the night?” he asked. “To recite Selichot,” they replied. “I’ve never heard of this prayer before,” he said. “What is it all about?”

The owners seemed bewildered at the site of a bearded and respectable looking rabbi, who apparently had never heard of this ancient Jewish custom. So they began to explain: “We pray to G-d that the cow gives milk in the coming year and that we make enough money to support our family.”

Rabbi Shmuel then turned serious and said to them: “You’re waking up in the middle of the night the week before the holiest day of the year to pray for your cow?! That’s not what the High Holidays are all about!”

Indeed, let us not forget that while we surely should be praying for materialistic good, our focus during the High Holidays should be on our relationship with G-d, and our commitment to being the best Jews that we can be.

SHABBOS NEWS
We are Open for Services Tomorrow!!

Services are Inside OR Outside This Week! It is YOUR Choice!

Due to the updated guidelines issued by the Governor’s office and with the agreement from Rabbinic authorities we will be offering services this Shabbos INSIDE of the sanctuary AND outside in the breezeway. We will be keeping our occupancy at 25% of capacity inside – so please, if you wish to join us, respond to this email. Those who wish to sit in the breezeway for services are welcome to do so.

Please note that we have invested heavily so as to be able to open up safely and comfortably. In fact, we are exceeding the protocols called for by the governmental agencies. You might say that, “We answer to a Higher Authority.”

With that being said we remind everyone that those who have been exposed to anyone with the virus within the last 14 days, those with symptoms, or those whose doctors advise them not to participate, should not, under any circumstances, come to shul.

Mazel tov to our own Angela Chapman, one of our wonderful volunteers, who has decided it is time to get a Hebrew name! We will say a special blessing over the Torah on Shabbos in Angela’s honor, at which time her Hebrew name will be given. This is an extremely joyous occasion to which you are invited!

Special Selichot Services Saturday Night (Actually, Sunday EARLY Morning) at 12:15am

The week before Rosh Hashanah we recite special prayers asking G-d for His forgiveness. These prayers are called Selichot. Our custom is to recite these prayers at the earliest possible moment, which is just after midnight on the Saturday night / Sunday morning before Rosh Hashanah.

Rosh Hashanah Gift Bags – Volunteers Needed

Thanks to some very generous sponsors we are sending out gorgeous Rosh Hashanah gift bags. These will be delivered over the next several days. They include delicious honey cake, challahs, and Israeli honey. In addition there will be High Holiday guides, A Yizkor Memorial booklet, a Holiday Prayer Book for children, tea lights, and other brochures about upcoming programming. If you would like a gift bag please let us know (we don’t read minds).

If you are available to help pack the gift bags or deliver them please let us know right away! We will be having a Packing Party on Sunday at 10am.

If there is a program or if there is something that you need please do not hesitate to contact us!

Catered Meals Available

Sadly we are not able to offer community meals at shul this year. However, we are pleased to be able to offer delicious Rosh Hashanah meals to go. The menu includes beef brisket or honey glazed turkey breast, gefilte fish, homemade challah, tzimmis (sweet carrot salad), and much more. The cost is $65 per adult and $30 per child. Orders must be received by Sunday, September 13th.

Sponsored Lulavim & Esrogim

Rabbi and Mrs. Yeruchem and Nechama Eilfort, Rabbi and Mrs. Elia and Chaya Eilfort, together with Rabbi and Mrs. Rodal, and Esrogino will be sponsoring a Lulav and Esrog set for all members who want one. All you have to do is respond to this message and we will order one for you. It has been a difficult year, but people should not miss out on the beautiful Mitzvah of taking the Four Species for the Holiday of Sukkot. We particularly want to acknowledge Esrogino for working with us on this ambitious project! Check out Esrogino’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Esrogino/.

Additional sponsors are welcome and encouraged to participate. The estimated cost is $1800. Donations can be made securely online by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate.

Membership – Will You Commit?

Dear Friends,

So far the year 2020 has been filled with opportunities. We have been presented with the opportunity to test ourselves as our country and our world has faced the devastation of the coronavirus pandemic. I know that I never thought that I would live in such times, and bet many of you feel the same. The health and wellbeing of each and every one of us has been severely threatened, the economy has undergone a tremendous shock, and a massive strain has been placed on our relationships and this community.

I learned in Yeshiva that tests are indeed opportunities, strange as that may sound. In Hebrew the same word for test, “Nisayon” is the root of the word for miracle, “Nes.” A Nes/miracle is when G-d suspends the rules of nature so as to reveal Himself in a supernatural way. Its root is to raise up. Therefore a test is an opportunity to raise ourselves up to a level otherwise inaccessible to us.

Our community, our beloved Chabad at La Costa, has not been immune to these opportunities. We have striven to rise to the occasion, and because of YOU we have risen to the occasion!

G-d bless all of you who have been instrumental in keeping us going. G-d bless those of you who despite (or perhaps because of) the coronavirus have stepped forward, dug deep, and made meaningful and ongoing contributions to our community.

What have your donations accomplished?

Your donations have fed many people spiritually and physically. Our lights are still on, spiritually and physically. We continue to be here for our community spiritually and physically. Our expenses have not decreased because of the pause in services. In fact, they have increased. Not only have many of our streams of income ceased (like catering and our barbecues, and Aliyah donations, and Hebrew school tuitions) but our expenses have increased as we continue to help people who face financial and spiritual crises. We are teaching more Torah, making more phone calls, counseling more people, and touching the lives of people in meaningful ways.

We therefore turn to you with the following requests: if you need help, let us know! We will do our utmost to help. If you can help others, let us know! If you can find your way to make a monthly contribution to our joint endeavor please demonstrate your commitment by becoming a member now.

We are asking all of those who can – please make a monthly financial commitment to us, to the Jewish community of this area, so that we can continue to serve the Jewish community of this area. We have always been and must always be self-supportive. That means we need you to step forward at this time of great opportunity!

Despite our increased budget we are not increasing our membership rates. Please note that our membership rates are lower than other communities’. It is not that we offer less. In fact, we offer more than we ever have. Those who can afford it and want to give more than the minimum are our heroes!

Please get back to me at your earliest convenience. I will send you this year’s membership form or you can fill it out online here. You can also securely donate immediately by following the link found below. You can choose to make your gift monthly, which is deeply appreciated!

G-d bless you and thank you so much for your friendship and support!

Rabbi Eilfort

Nitzavim/Va’Yailech – (You are) Standing/And When You Go

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

This week we read the double portions of Nitzavim and Va’Yailech, which translate as (You are) “Standing” and, “And When You Go.” This portion is always read immediately preceding Rosh Hashanah, the New Year. When we read the beginning of the portion it is readily understood, as it talks about the totality of the Jewish people, listed by category and what may be considered a hierarchy, standing together.

There is a story in the Talmud where a great sage’s son was deathly ill. A huge prayer vigil was established and, thank G-d, the situation improved. Upon regaining his health the Rabbi asked his son what he had seen, “on the other side”? The reply was astonishing. “Everything was upside down!”

What does that mean, our sages ask? It means that those who are viewed as the top of the heap are not necessarily so in the World of Truth. A person may engage in manual, even menial labor in this world. He may be very poor. But because one is poor in material wealth does not mean that he is poor in spiritual wealth. In fact, this world is upside down. In this crass material world our values are confused. We hold as precious things that are not precious and we, G-d forbid, undervalue or neglect to value altogether those things that truly are precious.

It is something that as a rabbi, I see with great regularity. I see people push their children to achieve scholastic greatness in their secular studies while completely (or almost completely) ignoring their Jewish studies. It is true! A good secular education could well lead to a very productive and enriching life. Doctors, lawyers, accountants, and CEOs all make a good living. But what is the point of making a good living if one doesn’t know the point of life?! What if one is a very successful professional but is not a decent human being? What if one makes tons of money but doesn’t give a dime to Tzedakah?

We live in a society that honors those who can run fast, jump high, sing beautifully, and are good at acting out parts. Are these Jewish ideals? No, they are not. In Judaism we honor those who devote themselves to the service of G-d and the service of our fellow human beings, irrespective of which tax bracket they may be in.

It is wholly appropriate and important for us to remember that the world is upside down. Now is the time to set our values, morals, and ethics on the path of the Almighty! This is the time when the alarm clock is ringing (no more hitting the snooze button), as we will be standing before the King of Kings next week, beseeching the Almighty for good health, nachas from our children, a good marriage, a healthy income, a vibrant community, and peace for ourselves and all humankind. We need to show up in the right frame of mind – certainly with our moral compass pointing in the correct direction. May G-d bless our efforts with the ultimate blessing; the immediate arrival of our righteous Moshiach!

So let us stand together (Nitzavim), and once we do and recognize the essential nature of each of us, go (Va’Yailech)! Now we are ready to move forward into a blessed New Year.

Wishing everyone an uplifting, joyous, and HEALTHY Shabbos!

Chicken Soup, Challah Available THIS Week

Those who live near Chabad at La Costa are welcome to let us know if you want some delicious Challah and/or Chicken Soup delivered to you on Friday to help you celebrate Shabbat in the most delicious way possible.

Please note that all food is prepared and delivered using recommended safeguards.

Sponsors Appreciated (And Needed)

This week’s chicken soup and challos are sponsored by the Mintz family. THANK YOU!

There are many ways to donate besides for checks and cash. Following please find a list of the various other ‘platforms’ that are available for secure donations that go directly and entirely into the synagogue account.

1. PayPal  [email protected] or PayPal.me/Neilfort

2. Venmo @Nechama-Eilfort

3. Cashapp $nechamae

Haftarah Thought  From: Chabad.org

Isaiah 61:10-63:9

This week's haftorah is the seventh and final installment of a series of seven "Haftarot of Consolation." These seven haftarot commence on the Shabbat following Tisha b'Av and continue until Rosh Hashanah.

The prophet begins on a high note, describing the great joy that we will experience with the Final Redemption, comparing it to the joy of a newly married couple.

Isaiah than declares his refusal to passively await the Redemption: "For Zion's sake I will not remain silent, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not be still, until her righteousness emerges like shining light..." He implores the stones of Jerusalem not to be silent, day or night, until G‑d restores Jerusalem and establishes it in glory.

The haftorah then recounts G‑d's oath to eventually redeem Zion, when the Jews will praise G‑d in Jerusalem. The haftorah also contains a description of the punishment G‑d will mete out to Edom and the enemies of Israel.

Isaiah concludes with the famous statement:

"In all [Israel's] afflictions, He, too, is afflicted, and the angel of His presence redeemed them..."

Like a loving father who shares the pain of his child, G‑d, too, shares the pain of His people, and awaits the redemption along with them.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting.

Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, founder of the Chabad movement, was the Torah reader in his synagogue. One year, when this week’s Torah portion—Ki Tavo—was to be read, he was out of town so a substitute reader was called in.

As the reader reached the section of the portion describing the horrible curses that will befall the Jewish people if they do not adhere to the Torah’s laws, the Rebbe’s son and eventual successor, Rabbi Dovber (who at the time was a child), fainted. When he was revived, they asked him what happened. He replied that he could not handle hearing all the curses. Asked why this year was different than past years, he responded: “When my father reads, I don’t hear curses…”

In addition to the meaning behind his words being that his father, the holy Alter Rebbe, read more than just the words on the surface, but the deeper meaning of the words (and thus the hidden blessings concealed within the curses), he also alluded to the fact that when a parent reprimands a child, the child should recognize its importance.

And of course, as parents we must remember that even when a child deserves reprimand, it must come from a place of love. That way the child will surely respond in kind.

Shabbat shalom.

SHABBOS NEWS
We are Open for Services Tomorrow!!

Services are INSIDE This Week! HURRAY!!!

We are in the midst of installing shade ‘sails’ over our patios enabling us to offer more covered seating outside. The sails will hopefully be up before Shabbos. A sincere thank you to Jon and Julie Rozansky for sponsoring the sails!

We have purchased partitions so that the Torah reader is divided from the person called to the Torah for an Aliyah and HEPA filter air purifiers have also been bought. We also have masks available for those attending services, which must be worn at all times while on campus, as well as gloves for those who wish to wear them.

All of these measures taken together with the procedures already established, which include the use of hand sanitizer and handwashing regularly, sanitized prayers books, sanitized restrooms and surfaces etc., will produce a safe experience. With that being said we remind everyone that those who have been exposed to anyone with the virus within the last 14 days, those with symptoms, or those whose doctors advise them not to participate, should not, under any circumstances, come to shul.

Tuition Free Hebrew School

This year’s membership form can be found HERE. You can also securely donate immediately by following the link found HERE. You can choose to make your gift monthly, which is deeply appreciated!

G-d bless you and thank you so much for your friendship and support!

In-person High Holidays Services Planned

Our High Holiday plans have been formulated. We will be sending out a form and brochure with all of the details in the near future. Please make sure to save the dates. As of now our plan is to hold services indoors and outdoors as per current governmental mandates.

If there is a program or if there is something that you need please do not hesitate to contact us!

Article of the Week

Living with the Times

Parshat Ki Tavo – When You Will Come

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

This week we read the portion titled ‘Ki Tavo’, which means ‘When you will come (into the Holy Land). The beginning of the portion details the laws of the Bikurim – the First Fruits. The Jewish people were commanded to bring a yearly first fruit offering in the Holy Temple.

In fact, the Jewish people are called the first fruit of the Almighty. Why?

The Mitzvah of offering the first fruit shows us something very important. Fruit is a result of hard work. It is quite different than the Mannah – the heavenly bread that sustained the Jews during their 40-year sojourn in the desert following the exodus from Egypt. The Mannah was miraculous as each day each person’s portion fell from the sky. It was not a result of hard work – it was served up to the Children of Israel on a ‘silver platter,’ so to speak.

The Bikurim, on the other hand, only came into existence with the considerable effort of picking a viable crop and planting the seeds in an appropriate location. As the young seedling would grow it had to be nurtured and protected. Only after years of care would edible and permissible fruit come forth. And THAT fruit, the result of all that work, would be brought to the Holy Temple as an offering.

While the Mannah fed the faith of the Jews the Bikurim trained our people to perceive G-dliness wherever we looked and taught us the value of appreciation. The fact is that grateful people are happier people. It is instructional that we are taught the value of thankfulness via crops that we worked diligently to produce. One may mistakenly think, “The power of my hand created this.” The first fruits remind us that at especially such a time we need to remain mindful of the blessings showered upon us by the Creator.

The Rebbe points out an additional thought that is profoundly important. When the basket of fruit was brought to the Temple a special prayer was recited. It mentions that an Aramean (Laban, father in law of Jacob our father) tried to destroy us, but that G-d protected us. Isn’t it interesting that G-d’s loving protection of His people was extended before the giving of the Torah? We have always been taught that the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai was like our wedding, so to speak, with the Almighty. This would mean that the love between us and our Creator started at that time.

Bikurim tells us something else entirely. G-d had a love for us even before we accepted the Torah. Consequently we see that the loving connection between G-d and His children is even greater than the love generated through Torah observance. There is an intrinsic, unbreakable connection, which the bringing of the first fruit and its attendant prayer proves!

When is this incredible connection most in evidence? On the coming holiday of Yom Kippur – the essence of our connection becomes revealed, which is why it is the Day of Atonement, the level of our soul that is one with G-d is revealed. That level negates any chasm created by our sins. Perhaps we can venture to say that living our lives with the ethic of eternal gratefulness directed towards the Eternal Greatness, is likewise a revelation of the deepest, most G-dly aspect of our souls.

The bottom line is that we should all feel most grateful due to our oneness with the True One!

Wishing everyone an uplifting, joyous, and HEALTHY Shabbos!

These are extraordinary times. Many people are reaching out for help and, Baruch Hashem / thank G-d, we are HERE to help! ‘We’ means YOU and US, TOGETHER. It is an amazing partnership that we have!

We are extremely grateful to those who have reached out to help fund us, enabling us to serve others.

We would like to specifically acknowledge at this time:

Channah Hale for her generous sponsorship of the Challahs. Channah has been absolutely phenomenal in her generous sponsorships! We thank her for her kindness and love.

This week’s chicken soup and challahs are also sponsored by the Mintz and Bartholomew families. THANK YOU!

There are many ways to donate besides for checks and cash. Following please find a list of the various other ‘platforms’ that are available for secure donations that go directly and entirely into the synagogue account.

1. PayPal  [email protected] or PayPal.me/Neilfort

2. Venmo @Nechama-Eilfort

3. Cashapp $nechamae

4. Zelle (Bank of America)  [email protected]

5. Personal credit card  chabadatlacosta.com/donate

Haftarah Thought From: Chabad.org

Isaiah 60:1-22

This week's haftorah is the sixth of a series of seven "Haftarot of Consolation." These seven haftarot commence on the Shabbat following Tisha b'Av and continue until Rosh Hashanah.

In glowing terms the prophet recounts descriptions of what will unfold during the Redemption. Beginning with the resurrection of the dead and the ingathering of the exiles, continuing with the joy and abundance the Jewish people will then experience, as well as the gifts that will be brought to G‑d from all of the nations of the world.

Finally, the Jewish nation will no longer be despised and derided, there will no longer be violence nor mourning, and G‑d will shine His everlasting light on His people.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting.
