MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Dear Friends,

Between Yom Kippur and Sukkot we all have clean slates. We’ve just been forgiven on Yom Kippur, and with all the Sukkot prep, our sages say we don’t even have time to sin! This is why Sukkot is referred to in the Torah as “the first day.” After the hustle of putting up our sukkah, gathering the ingredients for our lulav and etrog, and all other preparations for the holiday, it’s the first opportunity for us to stray.

But then we walk into our sukkah, humbled by nature’s impermanence and reliant on G‑d’s protection. Appreciating the bounty of the past year, and confident that we’re deserving of a blessed year to come. We now have the energy and faith to continue along the path of Torah and mitzvahs for the entire year. That is true happiness.

If you have not yet gotten busy, here’s the quick guide to get started.

 SHABBOS NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
We ARE Open for Services this Week - Soup & Challah info included

MAZEL TOV! SPECIAL SHABBOS CELEBRATION!

This Shabbos we will be celebrating the 13th birthday of Kayla’s son Angel, who has grown up in our community! Please come and be part of the celebration during the Kiddush.

Kiddush Sponsor(s)

This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored by Channah Hale, in loving memory of her father David Glovsky (Dovid ben Yaacov), her aunt Doris Seigal Bornstein (Dvorah bas Avraham HaLevi), and Arnold Tubis in loving memory of his mother Rose Nemiroff Tubis (Rochel Leah bas Avraham).

Additionally, it is being sponsored by Kayla Perez in honor of Angel’s 13th birthday.

Sponsor a Kiddush – Sponsors Needed

We have resumed the weekly Kiddush and it is as beautiful as ever, Baruch Hashem! A huge thank you to our dedicated Kiddush Committee (including but not limited to): Naomi Alter, Sheila Lebovitz, Channah Hale, Kayla Perez, and the Rebbetzin.

Our weekly, communal lunch is a chance to enjoy our gorgeous Shabbos atmosphere, together with our wonderful community, in the beautiful surroundings of our breezeway and patios.

We thank our generous sponsors, without whom, none of this would be possible!

We always need additional sponsors. Due to dramatically rising prices on paper goods and food we are compelled to raise the donation for a basic Kiddush to $250 per week. We thank everyone for their understanding and support. We still feel that this is the best ‘deal’ in town. When you consider that you get a full lunch, with many choices freshly prepared, for about 50 people, you will realize that it comes to about $5 per person. And of course it is strictly Kosher.

If you have a birthday, anniversary, Yarzeit, or some other occasion you want to beautifully commemorate while benefitting the entire community please consider Kiddush sponsorship (half sponsorships also available). We also hope that everyone will be supportive and understand that multiple sponsors benefits the shul and doesn’t, in any way detract, from your occasion.

If you are interested please respond to this message or call the shul, 760-943-8891, and you will be put in touch with the appropriate party to make your occasion happen.

AMAZING Yom Kippur!

The verdict is in; our Yom Kippur services were truly inspiring, joyful, and meaningful! We want to thank all of the dedicated volunteers who helped so much.

After earning a positive year filled with blessings, it is now time to get ready for the joyous celebration that comes with the holiday Sukkot – “The Time of our Joy!” (See schedule below).

Sukkot & Shmini Atzeret / Simchat Torah @ Chabad

Sukkot and Shmini Atzeret / Simchat Torah are known as “The Time of our Joy!” Please join us for our full schedule of services and celebrations. We will be kicking off the festivities on Monday night as we have a community meal in our beautiful Sukkah at shul. Please follow this link to make your reservations: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/HolidayMeals.

We will be having a Soup Bar, with several delicious soups for your pleasure. The Rebbetzin’s world famous Challah will also be served. It will be a perfect evening in our perfect Sukkah! There is very limited space so please reserve your place immediately!

Following services on Tuesday and Wednesday we will have our scrumptious Kiddush luncheon in the Sukkah, generously sponsored by the Alter Family (additional sponsors welcome!).

Indoor/Outdoor Services that Inspire

It is that most special time of year again. The joyousness of Sukkot, Shmini Atzeret, and Simchat Torah are here, and we are READY TO CELEBRATE – SAFELY!

Everyone, vaccinated or not, must wear a mask while indoors during services. Those who do not wish to wear a mask can sit in the breezeway where we will have chairs set up.

PLEASE DO NOT COME IF YOU ARE NOT FEELING WELL OR HAVE BEEN NEAR SOMEONE WHO IS NOT FEELING WELL.

Special Simchat Torah Banquet September 28th

For the last three+ decades the Perez Family has generously sponsored the Simchat Torah Banquet. This year they have graciously allowed Rabbi and Rebbetzin Eilfort to co-sponsor the Banquet in honor of their birthdays!

So… Everyone is invited for our beautiful Simchat Torah celebration where we will joyously celebrate the world’s greatest gift, the Torah! We will also wish long life to Mrs. Rachel Perez, lovingly remember Elias Perez, and celebrate the birthdays of Rabbi and Rebbetzin Eilfort.

Here’s the thing; all celebrations are better when our family and friends participate (that means YOU). Please let us know that you will be joining us by responding to this message so we can properly prepare.

Tzedakah - Donations

We did not charge for tickets to our services. Everyone was welcome regardless of ability to pay, and there were many who came who were not able to afford to give. There are many who ate who were not able to afford to pay for the meals. And, G-d willing, there will be many more meals in the coming days.

During Yom Kippur we put out our Pledge Cards. It is not too late to answer the call of our High Holiday Appeal and to respond as generously as possible. It is the best way, we are taught, to sweeten the coming year. We are continuing to try and raise money that will be used towards completing our basement. The money we raise also goes towards scholarships for Hebrew School students, our Challah and Chicken Soup program, and all of our ongoing expenses.

To donate securely online follow this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate.

The World’s ‘MOST BEAUTIFUL’ Paroches (Curtain Covering the Ark)

Our Shul is blessed with the most beautiful Paroches in the whole world (Yes! We are biased.). Earlier this year we dedicated the Paroches dedicated by the Joseph, Brunelle, and Fink families in loving memory of Bill and Julie Brunelle. Well, just in time for the holidays, we have now added the traditional white Paroches dedicated by Channah Hale, in loving memory of her late husband Arthur Hale, and her parents Bluma Seigal and Dovid Glovsky. These Paroches are truly precious and must be seen to be fully appreciated.

New Calendars Have Arrived!

Our gorgeous new Jewish Art Calendars for 5782 have arrived! You will be receiving one at home (if you are on our snail/mail list. If not, or if you want an extra one, we will have a box out at shul. Please do not take any on Shabbos.

Although we work REALLY HARD at getting it right, sometimes, somehow dates get left off or put in the wrong place. We are very sorry! If there is a mistake please let the Rebbetzin know so she can update the files for next year. We can also help you put stickers on your calendar.

New, Hot-Off-The-Press, Incredible ‘The Windows’ Brochures

We have stunning, stained-glass windows in our sanctuary thanks to the gracious generosity of Channah Hale. Channah has put together a beautiful full-color brochure with pictures and explaining our unique windows. Right now these are available only at shul.

Membership

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

If you have already filled out and returned your Membership form please accept this message as our sincere thank you!

We urge you to pick the level of Membership and the financial commitment you feel comfortable with, and to fill out the form that you will find by following this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership. We thank all of our amazing donors!

New Membership Year – Time to Join Our Family

THANK YOU TO THOSE WHO HAVE ALREADY JOINED!

It's never too late to join the family...   www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/membership .

Anyone who wants to join will be welcomed regardless of financial situation, and may be assured of absolute confidentiality in this matter.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

Soup and Challah

We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. We will not be delivering it if no request was made. Often times we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!

Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. If you are ready, willing, and able to assist please respond to this message or contact the Rebbetzin to volunteer ASAP. G-d bless you!

NO Soup and Challah this week. Those who live near Chabad at La Costa are welcome to let us know if you want some delicious Challah and/or Chicken Soup delivered to you. There will be Challah and Soup. If you can help with deliveries, reach out to Kayla or Nechama.

Please note that all food is prepared and delivered using recommended safeguards.

Sponsors Appreciated (And Needed)

These are extraordinary times many people are reaching out for help and, Baruch Hashem / thank G-d, we are HERE to help! ‘We’ means YOU and US, TOGETHER. It is an amazing partnership that we have!

A very special thank you goes out to our “Super Sponsor” Channah Hale who has continuously stepped forward helping us to maintain this service!

We are extremely grateful to those who have reached out to help fund us, enabling us to serve others. Thank you to our amazing volunteer drivers - you can volunteer to deliver Soup and Challah!

Note About Sponsorships

You may have noticed that we seek multiple sponsors for the Challah, Soup, and Torah classes. We do this because we need to find ways to cover our budgetary shortfall that has been caused by the coronavirus. The donations coming to the shul have been dramatically reduced. We greatly appreciate those of you who are still supporting us! G-d bless you! We greatly appreciate your understanding as we seek ways of propping up the income necessary to keep things afloat. Your ideas about additional income streams are likewise greatly appreciated!

RABBI'S WEEKLY ARTICLE
Rabbi's Letter | Thought for the Week | Haftarah

Living with the Times
Shabbat Parshat Ha’Azinu

By: Rabbi Rabbi Menachem Feldman for Chabad.org

“Listen heavens and I shall speak, and let the earth hear the words of my mouth.”

This is the opening verse of the song of Haazinu, the song that Moshe recited to his people on the day of his passing.

The song is poetic, powerful and poignant.

After a few introductory verses, there is a description of G‑d’s kindness to the Jewish people:

He found them in a desert land, and in a desolate, howling wasteland. He encompassed them and bestowed understanding upon them; He protected them as the pupil of His eye. As an eagle awakens its nest, hovering over its fledglings, it spreads its wings, taking them and carrying them on its pinions.

The song continues with the prediction that the Jews would eventually turn away from G‑d:

Yeshurun [Israel] became fat and kicked.... You forgot G‑d who made you. You began to serve idols that are new; your fathers never imagined them... I will hide my face from them I will see what will be their end for they are a generation of changes; they are not [recognizable] as My children whom I have reared.

What follows is a story as sad as Jewish history:

I will link evils upon them. I will use up My arrows on them. They will sprout hair from famine, attacked by demons, excised by Meriri. I will incite the teeth of livestock upon them, with the venom of creatures that slither in the dust. From outside, the sword will bereave, and terror from within; young men and maidens, suckling babes with venerable elders.

The song closes on a positive note, predicting that ultimately, “The nations will cause His [G‑d’s] nation to rejoice, for He will avenge the blood of His servants ... and He will atone His land, His nation.”

This song was sung quite often in the Holy Temple. Every day, while the priests would offer the daily offerings, the Levites would accompany the service with music and songs of praise from King David’s book of Psalms. All of the songs sung were joyous, and were meant to imbue the service with a spirit of joy, in fulfillment of the commandment to “serve the Lord with joy.”

Surprisingly, the song that the Levites sang every Shabbat, as the priests offered the Musaf offering, the additional offering for the Shabbat, was non-other than the Song of Haazinu. They would sing one section per week, completing the song every six weeks.

Why this song? Isn’t this the wrong message for the occasion? Granted, the sections sung on week one, two and six, are indeed inspiring, but what about the weeks in between, the portions of the song that foretell the tragedies that would befall our people? How could a person feel uplifted while the Levites were singing, “I [G‑d] said I will cause them to be forgotten, their remembrance will be destroyed from mankind”?!

The answer is, in the weeks that the Levites sang the bitter parts of the song, they were teaching us how to overcome the tragic stanzas of our lives. The Levites were teaching us to be patient as we allow the song to unfold.

We should not expect to wake up each and every day of our lives and hear a joyous song playing in our ears. There will be days when we hear no song, when all we can hear is lamentation. Yet, the message of the Levites is that each stanza is part of a larger song, which can be heard in full only if we come back next week for more. Ultimately, we will persist, and we will find the joy. We will then realize that the difficult part of the road is just that, a road to a deeper and more meaningful joy.

When everything is going well it is difficult to feel complete joy. Part of us is always worried that the blessings in our life will not last. We can’t be fully happy with our successes, because deep down we fear that we may lose them. We can’t fully celebrate our relationships, because deep down we are worried that they may end. The young couple, whose love is pure, is not fully happy because they are not sure whether their love is deep enough to survive a major conflict, whether it is strong enough to overcome pain and resentment. Only when the relationship survives deep challenges can the joy be complete. For only then do we know that the bond is unbreakable.

The Torah portion of Haazinu is always read in the month of the holidays, in the month that contains both the days of awe, Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, as well as the days of joy, Sukkot and Simchat Torah. In the beginning of the month we face the pain created by our weakness. We think about the sins of the past year, we think about the pain of separation caused by sin, the pain of separation from G‑d and from people we sinned against. In the days of awe, we overcome the pain, we return, we reconnect. And then we realize that our relationship with G‑d is deeper and stronger than we imagined. We realize that our bond with G‑d is unbreakable. That no matter how much pain we caused, no matter how far we tried to run, He has been waiting for us—waiting for us to return, waiting to accept us, waiting to embrace us.

We discover that the intense joy of Sukkot and Simchat Torah is possible only after we experience the days of awe. We discover that all parts of the journey are integral to the intense joy. We discover that they are all part of the same song.

No matter what life brings us, we remember that we are in the middle of a song. If we keep singing, keep playing the notes, we will discover the music. We will discover that there was music all along.

Wishing everyone an uplifting, joyous, and HEALTHY Shabbos and Sweet New Year!

Haftarah of Shabbat Parshat Ha’Azinu

II Samuel 22:1-51.

This week's haftorah describes the song King David composed in his old age, echoing the weekly Torah reading, where Moses delivers his parting words to the Jewish nation in song form.

David's song expresses gratitude to G‑d for saving him from all his enemies. He starts with the famous words, "The L-rd is my rock and my fortress." He goes on to describe the pain and hardships he encountered and reiterates that he always turned to G‑d in his moments of distress. He recounts G‑d's reaction to those who tormented him: "The Lord thundered from heaven; and the Most High gave forth His voice. And He sent out arrows and He scattered them, lightning and He discomfited them. . . I have pursued my enemies and have destroyed them; never turning back until they were consumed."

The King attributes his salvation to his uprightness in following G‑d's ways: "The Lord rewarded me according to my righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands He recompensed me..."

The song ends with David's expression of thankfulness: "Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the nations, and to Your name I will sing praises. He gives great salvation to His king, and He performs kindness to His anointed; to David and to his seed, forevermore."

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Pay-What-You-Can-Membership

We want the membership experience to be positive. We want you to feel GOOD about giving. Yes, we have suggested donations, but you should give what you feel you can afford. If you cannot comfortably give the suggested amount THAT IS OK. If you can give more than the suggested amount, THANK YOU, IT IS APPRECIATED! We love and appreciate your participation, and that is that. Please fill out our Membership form online by logging onto: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/Membership.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - NOW

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today". Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Send a personal email to  [email protected] to schedule an appointment today.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to  [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!

Tzedakah news –

These days it's hard to find deductions over our hefty standard deductions. If you are just on the borderline then here are some tips.

Own and IRA, or have inherited one? You can direct the IRA administrators to roll over amounts from it directly to the charity of your choice. The money taken out of your retirement account is not taxable to you and can be counted as a potential charitable contribution.

Another tax tip: Donate a car, the amount the vehicle is sold for (if your non profit chooses to sell it) can also potentially lower your taxable income.

MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Dear Friends,

As we approach the holiest day of the year, Yom Kippur, let us take a moment to remember the origins of this holiday.

Just after the nascent Jewish nation was freed from Egyptian bondage and received the Torah on Mt. Sinai in the greatest Divine revelation in history, they created a golden calf and actively worshipped it. At first G-d wanted to destroy them and start a new nation from Moses, but being the great leader that he was, Moses pleaded with G-d to forgive them. Finally, 80 days after the first set of tablets was broken, G-d gave Moses a new set, indicating that He had completely forgiven the Jewish people.

That day was the first Yom Kippur in history. And every year since, we commemorate this initial atonement, and recall the essential connection we have with G-d, a relationship that transcends all.

On Yom Kippur, the Jewish soul shines stronger than ever, because on this day nothing can get between the Jew and his essence.

Gemar chatimah tovah!

 SHABBOS NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
We ARE Open for Services this Week - Soup & Challah info included

MAZEL TOV! SPECIAL SHABBOS CELEBRATION!

This Shabbos we will be celebrating the Bar Mitzvah of Aviel Fattal who is visiting with his family to celebrate his special day here with our community! Everyone is welcome to join in the festivities!

Kiddush Sponsor(s)

This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored by the Fattal family in honor of Aviel’s Bar Mitzvah!

Minyan Needed

Please note a Mincha/Maariv Yarzeit Minyan is needed on Sunday evening, September 12, at 6:30pm so Kaddish can be recited. The service will take 30 minutes. If you can help with this Mitzvah please respond to this message.

Funeral Scheduled

Ronald Lozier, a friend of the shul who lived in San Diego, passed away from covid. His funeral is scheduled for 10am on Monday, September 13, and will take place at Home of Peace Cemetery in San Diego. The address is 3668 Imperial Ave. We are very concerned about a Minyan and need some volunteers to help make sure Kaddish can be recited. This is considered a Met Mitzvah, meaning the obligation to help see to the needs of someone who doesn’t have others. If you can help please respond to this message as soon as possible. If you need a ride let us know and we will try to organize something.

September 11th 20th Anniversary Memorial – THIS SHABBOS

This year we are marking 20 years since the terrorist attack on this country. At our Shabbat services (10am Saturday) we will add some memorial prayers in honor of the victims of the 9/11 attacks, their families, the first responders, as well as all of our brave members of the armed-services who have fought the war on terror in the two decades since the infamous attack on our country and freedom.

Well, just in time for the holidays, we have now added the traditional white Paroches dedicated by Channah Hale, in loving memory of her late husband Arthur Hale, and her parents BlumaSeigal and DovidGlovsky.

High Holidays @ Chabad

LAST CALL for Yom Kippur!

Please note: Reservations are REQUIRED for everyone (even members) to attend holiday services. If you have already made your reservations please accept this note as our thank you.

For reservations & the schedule follow this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/hhrsvp

High Holiday Honors – LAST CALL for Yom Kippur Honors!

It is considered a great merit to have an honor on the High Holidays. Women are more than welcome to sponsor honors (and the blessings will be read in their merit). Whatever is donated for a High Holiday Honor is considered a very high form of Tzedakah.

Simply respond to this message if you would like an honor or to sponsor an honor.

LAST CALL for Yizkor Names

Yizkor, the special memorial service, is only recited a few times per year. The most important reading of Yizkor is on Yom Kippur. Those who would like the names of their loved ones read by the Rabbi on Yom Kippur should submit those names immediately by responding to this message (Hebrew name of the deceased and Mother’s Hebrew name. If Hebrew name is not known English name will do.)

It is customary to give charity for each loved one memorialized. The suggested donation is $18 per name. Donations can be made securely online here: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate.

Please note that all of the names already on our Memorial Boards will be included.

Indoor Services that Inspire

It is that most special time of year again. The High Holidays are upon us and we have been working hard in preparing our most outstanding High Holiday experience ever! We will be led during services by our own Cantorial Soloist Rabbi Yossi Rodal and Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort. Our services will be ‘user-friendly’, inspiring, and meaningful, filled with uplifting songs and profound insights.

Community Meals

We are offering a community meal on Erev Yom Kippur, a Break-the-Fast at the end of Yom Kippur, dinners in our gorgeous Sukkah on the first two nights of the holiday, and of course our annual Simchat Torah banquet. In addition there will be full Kiddushes each day following services. I urge all of you to make sure you join us during this delicious time!

Erev Yom Kippur meal reservations must be made no later than 6pm, Friday, September 10th (TODAY!).

To reserve follow this link: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/holidaymeals.

LAST CALL for Lulav and Esrog Sets for Sukkot

Those who wish to order a Lulav and Esrog set for the upcoming holiday of Sukkot must respond to this message immediately. The cost is $75 per set.

Tzedakah - Donations

We do not charge for tickets to our services. Everyone is welcome regardless of ability to pay. We do suggest a donation of $180 per adult and $100 per child. Those who can give more are encouraged to do so.

During this season we are all judged. Our Sages teach us that by giving generously to Tzedakah we ‘sweeten’ judgments and bring blessing and even redemption to the world! Please make (and keep) a High Holiday pledge.

Frequently Asked Questions about Chabad

Question: Do I have to be Orthodox to attend?

Answer: Absolutely not! In fact, most people who attend Chabad at La Costa are not necessarily Orthodox. Instead they are people who are attracted by the beautiful traditional approach used by Chabad and enjoy the incredible warmth and spirituality they find in our community.

Question:Do I have to know Hebrew to follow a Chabad service?

Answer: Absolutely not! We use Hebrew/English prayer books, continually announce what page we are on, and all announcements and speeches are strictly in English. Even if you do not know one letter of Hebrew you will be able to comfortably follow our services (but we will gladly teach you Hebrew if you want).

Question: Can I still attend Chabad at La Costa if I cannot afford membership, or just wish to try it out for the time being?

Answer: Absolutely! At Chabad, our number one priority is bringing Torah-true Judaism to this area. We are a “very” non-profit organization. Of course we appreciate your contributions and require the community’s support for our efforts, but we have never, and will never turn anyone away for financial reasons.

Question:Do the Rabbis make themselves available to the community at large without an appointment six months in advance?

Answer: Absolutely! Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort, Rabbi Elia Eilfort, and Rabbi Yossi Rodal are all known for their easy accessibility and closeness with all of the members of Chabad at La Costa. You will not wait months to see our Rabbis, if you need an appointment you get an appointment. It is as simple as that. Even better; our Rebbetzins (Nechama, Chaya, and Muka) are available as well!

Question: Is it true that the Members of Chabad at La Costa are much more like a family than a congregation?

Answer: Absolutely! You will have to see it for yourself to experience it!

*Limited Soup and Challah this week.

Living with the Times
Shabbat Shuvah

By: Rabbi Adin Even-Israel (Steinsaltz) for Chabad.org

Shabbat Shuvah – or as it also called, Shabbat Teshuvah – is the Shabbat that falls out during the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah, between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Since Rosh Hashanah can fall out on various days of the week, the Torah reading on this Shabbat is not set: Sometimes it is Parshat Vayelech, and sometimes it is Parshat Haazinu. What is set aside especially for Shabbat Shuvah, however, is the haftarah, from which the name Shabbat Shuvah is derived.

Teshuvah is a central theme on this Shabbat, since it is one of the Aseret Yemei Teshuvah. However, there is an essential problem in the combination of Shabbat and teshuvah.

Teshuvah is commonly understood as inner change that entails a certain amount of retrospection focusing on the negative aspects of one’s past conduct. This is because one who is satisfied with and happy about everything he has done regrets nothing, whereas the will and ability to do teshuvah result to a great extent from the repudiation of the past and the need to distance oneself from it.

To be sure, teshuvah also has an aspect of rejuvenation, of erasing the past and rewriting oneself, a refreshing aspect of hope for a new beginning. But this aspect, too, contains within it the rejection and destruction of what once was.

This negation, which can be dramatic and even painful, is found frequently in the words of the prophets. When the prophet says, “Rend your hearts, not just your clothes,” the emphasis is not on the act of rending the clothes but on rending the heart.

This aspect of teshuvah has a time and a place – both in daily prayer, which includes petitions for teshuva and forgiveness, and also on certain days of the year that are dedicated to this spiritual work of teshuvah, with the soul searching and pain that it can entail.

Shabbat stands in contrast to all of this. Shabbat is supposed to be a day of joy, reconciliation, and both spiritual and physical rest. As we recite in the Shabbat prayers, “In love and favor You have given us Your holy Shabbat as an inheritance.” For besides the prohibition of work on Shabbat, there is also a general duty to call Shabbat “a delight.” Shabbat rest entails not only the cessation of physical work but also the attainment of inner calm and tranquility. For this reason, none of the Shabbat prayers and hymns focuses on teshuvah or forgiveness. For this reason, too, Viduy is not recited on Shabbat, for confession is a part of teshuvah that involves recollection of sin.

This raises a question about the very name “Shabbat Shuvah.” Can such a combination of words actually exist in the same phrase? Is it possible to do teshuvah on Shabbat in an appropriate manner?

The answer to this question is that Shabbat Shuvah joins Shabbat and teshuvah not on the simple, ordinary level but on a much deeper level. In fact, the very term teshuvah hints at a different understanding of this concept than what we are accustomed to hearing. We do not call it charatah (remorse) or shevirat lev (broken-heartedness) but, rather, teshuvah – return. This return can be accomplished very quickly: One who commits a sin can try to return to the time that preceded this sin. But the return can also be more difficult and complicated, as in the case of someone who, after years of following an improper path, seeks to return to a point before he set out on that path.

For one kind of person, teshuvah means a return to his childhood days, to a time when his world was more in harmony – with himself, with his family, and with G‑d. But there is another kind of person for whom not even his childhood offers him a secure point from which to return to G‑d. In such cases, teshuvah takes on a deeper meaning: return to the “original source,” the source of a person’s being even before his physical life in this world. Teshuvah on this level, which takes a person farther, beyond his life and deeds in this world, involves much less conflict or confrontation with past defects or blemishes, for it is like a total rebirth, a beginning almost from the point of origin.

Conceptually, Shabbat, too, includes an element of return and restoration of things to their source. To be sure, shevitah means cessation of action, leaving everything in a state of rest. But the word shavat is also connected to shivah, meaning “return.” Shabbat is a return to a point prior to our coming into being. On the one hand, Shabbat is the completion of everything that exists, but on the other hand, it is a return to the state before Creation, to a state of non-existence, to the day before the first day.

This conception of Shabbat as a state of existence that preceded the world is found, for example, in the piyut, “Lecha Dodi,” which describes Shabbat as “the source of blessing.” In other words, Shabbat is not an epilogue to the six days of Creation but a kind of prologue.

The sense of return that is found both in teshuvah and Shabbat is the heart of the connection between the two. We are encouraged to think little of the past and much more of what could yet be; we do not obsess over our sins, but instead focus on the exaltation of teshuva.

On this Shabbat, as on Shabbat HaGadol, the synagogue rabbi customarily delivers a derashah to the entire congregation. As a rule, the derashah deals with matters that are meant to rouse the heart to teshuva, but takes into consideration the fact that on Shabbat one should not recall or bring up the difficult matters and painful memories that are generally spoken of when we attain teshuvah. On Shabbat Shuvah, we emphasize the teshuvah of love, not the teshuva of remorse and pain. This kind of teshuvah is a return that is not only based on love, but can only be achieved by returning in the way of love.

The special haftarah of this Shabbat begins with the words “Return, O Israel.” These words contain the essential message of this Shabbat: the call to return to G‑d.

To be sure, most of our prophets emphasize teshuvah, for this was their main purpose – to inspire the Jewish people to leave its evil ways and choose the good path. However, most of their prophecies are full of harsh rebuke about sins and the punishments that the individual and the nation will suffer because of those sins if they do not attain teshuvah. It is not for naught that the Talmud describes the words of the prophets as “words of complaint,” referring to the prophets’ complaints about Israel and about their sins.

By contrast, Hosea’s prophecy read in this haftarah contains very few words of rebuke, petition, or supplication for the abrogation of punishment. The essence of the haftarah is a call for complete teshuvah, for leaving sin and for following a new direction. It also contains words of conciliation, acceptance, and reassurance for those who seek teshuvah.

What is more, although there are prophecies of consolation in the words of other prophets as well – regarding the future redemption and the good times that will come – those prophecies generally do not deal with the causes of the exile and the suffering. In this haftarah, however, there is a unique combination: Although it is not a prophecy of redemption but an explicit call for teshuvah, nevertheless, it consists entirely of words of consolation and conciliation.

These words of comfort, stated with great tenderness, are meant to inspire people in a different way: Look how good it is for people who seek shelter under the wings of the Shechina! Look how much love G‑d bestows on His people and on all who love Him! The haftarah’s general tone resembles the words of encouragement that one offers to a sick person: How good it will be when you recover! How well you will feel, and how many blessings you will enjoy! Indeed, this is how Ibn Ezra interprets the verse, “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely:” “Backsliding in the soul is like illness in the body; thus the words ‘I will heal.’”

Finally, the other prophets’ words of rebuke deal primarily with teshuvah out of fear – fear of sin and fear of punishment – whereas in the haftarah chosen for Shabbat Shuva we are encouraged to seek teshuvah out of love, a teshuvah whose whole essence is drawing near to G‑d. In this way, the haftarah reflects the essence of this Shabbat: a conciliatory call to spiritual awakening and drawing near to G‑d.

Between the majesty of the judgment on Rosh Hashanah and the majesty of the forgiveness on Yom Kippur stands this Shabbat, Shabbat Shuvah, whose whole essence is the relationship of two lovers between whom a misunderstanding has arisen. Now, as they resolve the misunderstanding, they hold each other in a loving embrace.

Wishing everyone an uplifting, joyous, and HEALTHY Shabbos and Sweet New Year!

Haftarah of Shabbat Parshat Va’Yeilech – Shabbat Shuva

Hosea 14:2-10; Micah 7:18-20.

The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is known as Shabbat Shuva or "Shabbat of Return (Repentance)." The name is a reference to the opening words of the week's haftorah, "Shuva Israel — Return O Israel." This haftorah is read in honor of the Ten Days of Repentance, the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The prophet Hosea exhorts the Jewish people to "Return, O Israel, to the L-rd your G‑d," encouraging them to repent sincerely and ask for G‑d's forgiveness. Hosea urges the Jews to put their trust in G‑d, not in Assyria, powerful horses or idols. At that point, G‑d promises to remove His anger from Israel, "I will be like dew to Israel, they shall blossom like a rose." The prophet then goes on to foretell the return of the exiles and the cessation of idol-worship amongst the people.

The haftorah concludes with a  brief portion from the Book of Micah, which describes G‑d's kindness in forgiving the sins of His people. "He does not maintain His anger forever, for He is a lover of kindness. He will have mercy on us, He will grasp our iniquities and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea." Micah concludes with an enjoinder to G‑d to remember the pacts He made with the Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

Rina Coleman is an Enrolled Agent with more than 20 years experience preparing taxes for all walks of life. Please contact her at [email protected] for a free 15 minute consultation.
