MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

This Shabbat marks 70 years since the Rebbe officially accepted the mantle of leadership of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement, on the first anniversary of his predecessor’s passing. Before the Previous Rebbe passed away, he published a 20-chapter discourse titled “Basi Legani” on various esoteric Chassidic concepts, all with practical down-to-earth application. It served as a last will and testament of sorts, guiding his followers in the days and years after his passing. Every year, on the yahrtzeit, the Rebbe would deliver a discourse of his own, elaborating on another chapter of the original discourse. The eleventh chapter is about the Jewish people being “G-d’s army,” as we are called in this week’s Torah portion. We are entrusted with the mandate to battle the forces of impurity in the world. Just like a human king leading his men to battle leaves no stone unturned and no avenue unexplored—providing the soldiers every possible advantage to further the goal of winning the war—G-d does the same for us, ordering us to battle the forces of evil and providing us with every tool necessary to succeed. With G-d on our side, offering support through any ordeal, we are sure to always be victorious! Shabbat shalom.

Bo – Come (to Pharaoh)

Future Insurance

This week’s portion is titled, “Bo,” which means ‘Come’ (to Pharaoh). The portion begins with the Almighty commanding Moses to approach Pharaoh and to demand that he release the Jewish people. In our portion the final three plagues are visited upon the Egyptians with devastating effect. Additionally, some Mitzvot/Commandments are directed to the Jewish people. They are commanded to sanctify the month of Nisan, which in effect created the unique Jewish calendar – a primarily lunar calendar with significant solar elements (in other words, kind of a hybrid). They were commanded to bring the Passover sacrifice, an exercise that helped them gain merits, which heretofore had been sorely lacking, and distinguished them from their Egyptian oppressors. We see the people leave, taking with them a tremendous amount of wealth; wealth that they had earned through their back-breaking labor.

When studying the evolution of the people throughout the portion we find an intriguing and persistent emphasis on the children. At one point in the narrative Pharaoh offers to allow all of the adults to leave, but demanded the children stay behind. Pharaoh argued that Moses was demanding the opportunity to serve G-d. Everyone knows that it is the adults who really participate in religious services, while the children entertain themselves elsewhere. Moses’ request for the children to accompany the adults out of Egypt was a trick, bellowed Pharaoh! Moses responded forcefully by stating that no Jew would be left behind – not a single one! Young and old, men and women, everyone would leave. 

The Rebbe points out that Moses prefaced the young to the old, which was a conscious and purposeful emphasis by Moses. The fact is that Pharaoh’s claim (that the children were not necessary) was a ruse. He understood that without children there is no future. Every tyrant in history has learned from Pharaoh, as they try to sever our children from a Kosher Jewish education. If the children can be cut off, Judaism will wither on the vine, G-d forbid! 

Later in the portion we again see the importance of the children. It is specifically to the children that we are commanded to transmit the story of the Egyptian exile and the redemption therefrom. If we are successful in touching the children, in infusing within them a pride in Judaism built upon the foundation of a well-rounded Jewish education that starts with our genesis as a nation, we go a long way in insuring our survival as a people. It is upon our portion that the Haggadah that we read on Passover is based. 

As I grow older, I fondly recall the Passover Sedarim we celebrated at my grandmother’s house. My cousins and I had a blast! I still remember my grandmother calling us into the kitchen and sneaking us some (extremely watered down) wine. The only thing sweeter than the wine is the memory. 

Judaism knows that the children are the key. If we fail to transmit the beauty of Judaism to the children we have failed utterly to perpetuate our faith, and thusly have failed to live up to our spiritual potential and our divinely ordained mission. It is that simple. It must be our priority! 

Pharaoh understood the correlation. Moses successfully responded, with G-d’s help. 

This is a critical lesson for all of us. We all have a stake in the successful transmittal of our faith to the next generation. And we are not helpless in the matter. Indeed we have the most important part to play. We insure success by being mindful of the mandate. Thinking about how to achieve success, and more importantly still, ACTING to complete the mission. This includes behaving as role models and proactively motivating our children. We must inspire our children to fulfill their role.

The Rebbe understood this concept. He was able to achieve a profound connection with children. He taught them with love, patience, and understanding. Although the Rebbe was never blessed with any biological children, he left a lot of orphans. He emphasized the importance of positive reinforcement. He pushed us to make learning fun and entertaining for children, but that everything we teach must be taught with the underpinning of faith in Hashem and His Torah. 

All of us are constantly busy looking for the best return on our investments as we seek out the means of insuring our future. That future is best insured by investing in our youth. As the passage states, “Educate the child according to his way and even when he gets old he will not depart from it!”

It is precisely with the energy and enthusiasm of youth that we will finally be able to remove that which conceals the Almighty. “And then the knowledge of G-d will fill the world as the water fills the seas!”

Haftarah Parshat Bo

Jeremiah 46:13–28.

In this week’s Torah reading, we read of the devastation of the Egyptian nation through the final three of the Ten Plagues. In the haftorah we read of the punishment G d visited upon Egypt centuries later, through the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.
G d reveals Egypt’s fate to Jeremiah: “Proclaim it in Egypt and let it be heard in Migdol, and let it be heard in Noph and in Tahpanhes. Say, ‘Stand fast and prepare yourself, for the sword has devoured round about you.’” The prophet then goes on to describe Egypt’s helplessness and the destruction that it will incur at the hands of the Babylonians.
The haftorah ends with G d’s assurance to the Jewish people not to fear, for though they too will be punished and exiled, ultimately they will be redeemed:
“You fear not, O Jacob My servant, and be not dismayed, O Israel! for behold, I will redeem you from afar, and your children from the land of their captivity, and Jacob shall return and be quiet and at ease, and there shall be none who disturb his rest. You fear not, My servant Jacob, says the L rd, for I am with you, for I will make a full end of all the nations where I have driven you.”

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

We want the membership experience to be positive. We want you to feel GOOD about giving. Yes, we have suggested donations, but you should give what you feel you can afford. If you cannot comfortably give the suggested amount THAT IS OK. If you can give more than the suggested amount, THANK YOU, IT IS APPRECIATED! Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - NOW

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will  your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $500 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to   [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Hebrew School & C-Kids

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Tu bShvat

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - Tuition Free Hebrew School

Due to the economic hardships created by the pandemic we will be offering Tuition Free Hebrew School this year. Families are struggling to make ends meet, but we cannot allow the children to suffer. We are offering two options – In-person learning (outdoor and indoor classes, socially distant, masks on), and virtual learning. Please respond to this message for further information. We are the only synagogue in the county making such an offer! Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Currently Distance Learning with Zoom! Our students want to be here!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
