Judaism teaches us that belief in a higher power is central to our faith. We pray three times a day, ideally with a minyan, yet prayer can happen anywhere—at home, work, or even on a bus. While we often think of prayer as a request for spiritual matters, we are encouraged to include the mundane as well. Prayer is more than just words; it’s an opportunity to connect with the Infinite, the source of all existence.
This lesson is illustrated in the life of our patriarch Jacob, described in the opening verses of this week’s Torah reading. Fleeing from his brother Esau, Jacob finds himself at the holiest place on earth—Mount Moriah, later known as the Temple Mount. After a divine dream of angels ascending to Heaven, Jacob awakens with the realization of where he is. Yet instead of praying for spiritual growth or wisdom, he prays for food, shelter, and clothing—basic, material needs.
Why? Because G-d’s presence is not limited to the spiritual. His infinity means He is in every part of our lives, not just the sacred moments. G-d desires our connection in all areas, even the mundane.
This is a powerful message, especially as we reflect on last week’s Conference of Chabad-Lubavitch Emissaries, Chabad rabbis from all over the world gathered to strengthen our mission, a mission founded on the teaching that bringing G-d into every aspect of life is where His true essence is revealed. Whether in our prayers or daily actions, we make the Infinite tangible by inviting G-d into every moment.

Hebrew School News – HEBREW IMMERSION!
We started a curriculum where we will go through all of the Alef Bet and learn about something that we are grateful for, starting with the letter of the week.
The first week was א אור . Alef for Ohr- light. And we made lanterns.
The second week was ב בית. Bet for Bayit- house and we made Birchat Habayit to hang in our homes.
Then we learned about Geshem- rain and made rain in a bottle!
We talked about Dibbur for daled - Language.
We are up to Hey for Horim - Parents. We made cards for out Ema and Abba.
The children have also begun alef champ which is a self paced hebrew reading program.
I am so proud of all of our ckids students and parents ❤

December 24th Ancient Jewish American Custom Observed
On the evening of December 24th, a much-observed custom has arisen amongst the Jewish community of the United States; to eat Chinese food. Being that there is a severe shortage of Kosher Chinese restaurants in San Diego, Chabad at La Costa will be offering a Chinese Food Feast! Not only will there be a full buffet of Chinese favorites, there will also be games and lots of fun!
Advanced reservations are a must by responding to this email.
The cost is $25 per adult (13+) and $10 per child (3-13).
Weekly Torah Class with Rabbi Sholom
Join Rabbi Sholom Eilfort, virtually, as he gives a weekly class in the Torah Portion. You can view the class on Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort’s Facebook feed (must be Facebook “Friends” with Rabbi Eilfort to be able to see the class).
A number of commentaries are curated to make the class profound while also covering the basics. Everyone is invited to join. There is no cost to participate.

A Letter from the O-U About Chabad
You Are a Jew:
Chabad and the Antisemites
Everyone has their favorite Chabad story. Here is mine.
A friend once approached a Chabad shaliach (emissary) who would stand at the entrance to the subway station each and every Friday morning, asking people if they were Jewish and offering to help them lay tefillin. It was exceptionally rare for anyone to stop and accept his offer and my friend wanted to understand how the shaliach kept at it week after week, despite his repeated failure. The shaliach’ s response was quintessentially Chabad: “My success rate is 100%. Every Jew that walks by me is reminded that he or she is a Jew.”
Chabad’s dedicated emissaries can be found in every corner of the globe, creating Jewish presence and outposts of Jewish life and caring, reminding Jews of who they are. According to Pew, an astounding 37% of American Jews engage with Chabad from rarely to often.
Two years ago, a group of us from the Orthodox Union had the privilege of attending the dinner event at Chabad’s annual conference of shluchim (emissaries). We went to demonstrate appreciation for their lifesaving work delivering aid and support under fire to the Jews in Russia and Ukraine. As they went through the jaw-dropping roll call of their emissaries throughout the globe, the big screen showed Russia — 222. I leaned over and whispered to a colleague. “Do you see that? We struggle to find a few people to spend a couple of years of their lives teaching Torah in communities without a kosher pizza store, while Chabad has 222 people who at around the age of 22 decided to go alone to remote corners of Russia where they will care materially and spiritually for Jews, raise their own families, and remain until they die or the Messiah arrives.”
That is what the angels of Chabad do everywhere in the world and that was the mission of Rabbi Zvi Kogan in the UAE. No movement or group even remotely approaches Chabad’s relentless dedication to mission and its reach and success in reminding Jews — wherever they may be — of who they are.
No one, that is, other than the antisemites.
The vicious murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan painfully reminded every Jew everywhere that he or she is a Jew. It was not an isolated reminder. The tidal wave of antisemitism that has engulfed the world since October 7 has reminded countless Jews of who they are and moved them to try to find their way home to Jewish tradition and community. Much as the Talmud notes how the empowerment of Haman stimulated more of a resurgence of Jewishness than the positive guidance of generations of prophets, we can observe how hateful antisemitism has outdone the ahavat Yisrael of Chabad in bringing Jews home.
Our hearts are broken for Rabbi Kogan’ s family and for the entire Chabad community as they grieve over this devastating blow. We in the Jewish community would do well to pause and make note of the debt we owe them for their steadfast commitment to all of us, for the Jewish infrastructure they have created and maintain throughout the world, and for reminding us of who we are and the values we stand for.
The world would also do well to pause and learn from Chabad’s remarkable army of men and women who never hide or shirk their identity and values but choose instead to work fearlessly anywhere and everywhere to bring light to a darkened world. Their strength should inspire the many who continue to display weakness in their epic failure to act with moral clarity and courage and confront evil and who have chosen instead to cow to popular opinion and tie the hands of Israel. What has been done and said in recent days by the ICC, the UN, the Vatican, and by some in the United States Congress has added wind to the sails of Iran, Hamas, and Hezbollah, further fueled global antisemitism, and empowered the enemies of the Jewish people. If only they had the moral courage of a Chabad shaliach.
The vicious murder of Rabbi Kogan reminds us Jews of who we are. The life of Rabbi Kogan and of his fellow shluchim should remind all people of good conscience to act with discernment and moral clarity, standing up fearlessly to evil and lovingly offering their support for the good.

Hosea 11:7-12:14.
This week's haftorah mentions Jacob's flight from home to the "field of Aram," an episode that is recounted in this week's Torah reading.
The haftorah begins with the prophet Hosea's rebuke of the Jewish people for forsaking G‑d. Nevertheless, Hosea assures the people that G‑d will not abandon them: "How can I give you, Ephraim, and deliver you [to the hands of the nations]? . . . I will not act with My fierce anger; I will not return to destroy Ephraim."
The prophet discusses the misdeeds of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, and the future degeneration of the Kingdom of Judea. He contrasts their behavior to that of their forefather Jacob who was faithful to G‑d and prevailed against enemies, both human and angelic.
The haftorah also makes mention of the ingathering of the exiles which will occur during the Final Redemption: "They shall hasten like a bird from Egypt and like a dove from the land of Assyria; and I will place them in their houses, says the Lord."

Our Soup and Challah Project has been going on its FOURTH year! It was sponsored by Channah Hale and now carried on in her memory.
We are at the point that we need NEW volunteers to drive and deliver food packages around the area.
Please consider making this a part of your Friday routine. Volunteers pick up a few containers of soup and bags of challah at 3:00pm and delivering them to the door of the recipients. Volunteers also get soup and challah!

Our number one priority is to ensure the safety and security of our shul family. We have a robust security system in place. We have gone to the added expense of hiring a uniformed, armed guard, who is with us, watching over us, in addition to our internal security team.

The Foundation Project - City Approved Plan

Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul
We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.
Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.
Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.
Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.
If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
