Message from the Rabbi

We’ve already had two of them, and we are about to have our third and final one for the year: a triple-header, when two days of holiday are followed by Shabbat.

Thursday will be Shemini Atzeret, Friday will be Simchat Torah, and then comes Shabbat. And this Shabbat is not just an ordinary Shabbat. It is “Shabbat Bereishit,” when we begin the Torah-reading cycle anew. This gives us the opportunity to channel the joy and energy of the previous days into real concrete action: learning the Torah that we’ve been celebrating with such gusto.

Are you ready for the whirlwind of activity about to come our way? This is the final hurrah for the season, so make sure to take advantage!

Chabad - Simchat Torah Edition

Shmini Atzeret / Simchat Torah Edition

It’s Shmini Atzeret / Simchat Torah – The Time of Our Joy!

No Sukkot Holiday would be complete without our annual Grand Simchat Torah Celebration! This year’s banquet, generously sponsored by Elias and Rachel Perez, promises to be great, featuring incredible gourmet food (an Italian Festa) and a joyous atmosphere. The best part of course will be theHakafot (traditional dancing with the Torah). Every child in attendance will receive a beautiful stuffed Torah to dance with and to take home.

There is no cost to attend. Everyone – and we mean EVERYONE – is invited and encouraged to participate in this incredible yearly treat! Mark your calendars now for Thursday, October 16th with services beginning at 6pm and dinner being served immediately afterward.

Special Shabbat

This coming Shabbat is called Shabbat Biraishit, after the name of the Torah portion we will read. Our tradition tells us that how we this Shabbat goes, so will go our coming year. It is therefore of crucial importance to be mindful of G-d and His greatness and to do all in our power to connect to Him during this opportune time. It is particularly important to come to shul and listen to the Torah reading.

Getting Closer by the Day THANKS to Our Generous Donors!

We are still about $60,000 short of what we need to pay for all of the items remaining to achieve occupancy. Since we started this ‘final stretch’ appeal more than $90,000 has been donated! If you can help us achieve this final amount it will be a great blessing for you and our community. Please see list of remaining dedications found below.

A couple of wonderful additional ideas came up at our Open House. We are looking to add benches in the Breezeway, a decorative fountain in front, and a Mural on the inside of our Dome.

Special Prayers Needed

Please keep Michoel ben Sofia in mind who is in need of a Refuah Shelaimah (a complete and speedy recovery). Your prayers help!

HebrewSchoolRocks!

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Our students want to be here!

Everyone is invited and encouraged to join us for a beautiful weekly gathering!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Minyan

Our daily Minyan has been a tremendous source of good will for our community. Several people have been able to utilize the Minyan in order to say Kaddish for a loved one. Others have become accustomed to the great Mitzvah of davening with a Minyan because there is one readily available. Beginning this week, a couple of our regulars will be out of town for the next several weeks. We therefore need a few additional commitments so that the Minyan doesn’t slow down, G-d forbid. We are asking those who are able to make a commitment to the Minyan to please do so now. Some people are counting on our Minyan to be able to recite Kaddish for their loved ones. This is tremendously important. Please commit to a day or two per week (at the very least). People who have joined the Minyan have universally reported that they find the experience uplifting and have described it as a great way to start the day. Please respond to this message if you are able to help us in this regard.

Learn the Code of Jewish Law with Rabbi Eilfort

A daily class in practical Jewish Law is held immediately following the Minyan in our storefront location taught by Rabbi Eilfort. Using the Code of Jewish Law, known in Hebrew as the Shulchan Aruch, participants are able to discuss the laws while learning about the ongoing opportunities one has to serve the Almighty on a moment-by-moment basis. The class begins at about 8:50am and lasts for about 20 minutes. There is no charge to attend.

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
