Open House Scheduled: THIS Sunday, Aug. 23, 11:30am-2:30pm
Mark your calendar now for a wonderful Open House Celebration! Everyone is invited and encouraged to join us as we will be giving tours of our new building and unveiling our exciting menu of what we offer the community (including religious services, educational programs, and social opportunities), conducting a Safrut demonstration (see how to write a Megillah!), serving a barbecue lunch (it’s on us!), enjoying a bounce house, entertainment, and lots of fun. As a special added feature, never before offered in Carlsbad, we will have a Shofar Factory! There will be a demonstration as to how a Shofar is made, and for those who wish to try it for themselves, they can actually make their own Shofar! This activity is great for children and adults. Additional features: Jewish Origami Demo, Safrut (Jewish Caligraphy) Demo, Bounce House, Officer Friendly, BBQ Lunch, Tours of our New Building, Information about Chabad at La Costa, the Chabad Hebrew Academy, AIPAC, and others!
Please note that we are currently looking for volunteers to help with this IMPORTANT program. If you wish you to serve as a volunteer please be sure to send an email to[email protected]. We look forward to seeing everyone here!
A Thought from the Rabbi It’s almost the High Holidays, are you prepared? Think of the High Holiday season like a long-scheduled international trip. Many stops will be made along the way. Several different time zones and climates will be crossed. Varied activities will be engaged in. Now let me ask you a question or two: Would you show up to the trip at the appointed hour without any preparation? How do you think lack of preparation would impact your trip, would it make it more or less enjoyable? More or less effective? More or less meaningful? Of course the metaphor is not exactly accurate, as trips – even international ones – are rarely if ever as germane to one’s existence as the High Holidays. My hope is that the metaphor will give you pause. It is of critical importance to understand that the Days of Awe are nearly upon us. It is a time when extra time will be spent in Shul, thinking about the past year and making positive resolutions for the coming year. The Almighty helps us prepare by making Himself ‘more available’ to us, much as the King in the Field who goes out to his subjects so He can greet them in THEIR element and encourage them to come closer to Him. To properly prepare for the upcoming holidays we make an internal, spiritual account of the most important relationship in our lives – our relationship with “Our Father Our King.” This relationship informs all of our relationships, from the most important (immediate family) to the most distant (stranger). This relationship also colors our relationship with nature, our place of business, and even how we view what is going on around us and the world. Indeed, it is all encompassing. Take a few concrete steps to prepare starting immediately! Make a list for yourself if need be, including what you did well and what needs improvement. Think about how you will improve yourself and how you will gently and lovingly help support those around you who may need encouragement. And, certainly don’t forget to make immediate reservations to join us for our uplifting and meaningful High Holiday services! May you be written and sealed in the Book of Life! Hold the Date; Building Dedication Scheduled!
Dinner Committee Being Formed We are most pleased to announce that we have set a date to do the official dedication of our new building! Please mark your calendar and set aside Sunday, December 13th. It is the second Sunday of Chanukah, and an extremely elegant and tasteful dinner party is being planned. This grand event will include entertainment, a gourmet dinner, live music, a Silent and Live auction, games, and so much more. We are looking for volunteers to serve on the Dinner Committee who are willing to help us organize this ambitious event. The first meeting will take place at shul on Monday, August 24th at 7:30pm. We are also looking for valuable new gifts for the auction. If you have or can sponsor hotel/time-share getaways, sporting events, entertainment events, beauty/health products or experiences, jewelry, or electronics please respond to this message. It will be a great Mitzvah and deeply appreciated! Next French Gourmet Kosher Cooking Class Scheduled We are excited to announce that Franck Riffaud, Executive Pastry Chef at the Park Hyatt Aviara, a five-star resort hotel, will be offering another class to our community. The next class, titled “Everything Chocolate,” will take place at 7:30pm on Monday, October 12thin Chabad at La Costa. Each participant will receive the recipes as well as learn, in a step-by-step manner how to make the scrumptious creations. Participants will get to not only sample some of the delicious recipes but take some delicacies home! In order to insure maximum benefit to the students we are limiting enrollment to the first 12 people to respond. To reserve a place send an email to [email protected].

Learn the Code of Jewish Law with Rabbi Eilfort A daily class in practical Jewish Law is held immediately following the Minyan taught by Rabbi Eilfort. Using the Code of Jewish Law, known in Hebrew as the Shulchan Aruch, participants are able to discuss the laws while learning about the ongoing opportunities one has to serve the Almighty on a moment-by-moment basis. The class begins at about 8:50am and lasts for about 20 minutes. There is no charge to attend. Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family. We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is only $360 per plaque for either the Memorial Board or the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to[email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891. Cell Phones & Chatting During Services Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. Shul Etiquette Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family. At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul. It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like. Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services. We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30).
