Thursday morning services will begin at 8am and include both a Torah reading and the Megillah. Thursday afternoon at 5pm we will have a second Megillah reading and at 6pm we will have our annual Family Purim Banquet. The theme of this year’s banquet is Purim in the Palace and will be a meal ‘fit for a king and/or a queen’! The cost is only $25 per adult and $10 per childen (3-12). Space is limited so reservations are a must by sending an email to [email protected], and please come in costume! A separate Purim brochure with lots of informative content has been mailed as well. Kiddush sponsorship begins at $180. A Thought from the Rabbi This Shabbat is called Shabbat Zachor because of the special Torah reading that will be added after the weekly portion (VaYikra – And He Called). On the Shabbat before Purim we read the story of Amalek, the nefarious nation that attacked the Jewish people after their miraculous exodus from Egypt. The reason we read this portion on the Shabbat before Purim is because the arch villain of the Purim story, Haman, was a descendent of that accursed nation. We learn that Amalek represents the precise opposite of the Jewish nation. The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of blessed memory, explains why this is so. As Jews, we are commanded to approach our divine service with warmth, energy, and joy. Amalek, the eternal enemy of our people, had a very different approach to G-dliness. To understand and have context we must study the history. The Jewish people had finally, after more than 200 years of dwelling in Egypt – ultimately becoming intensely oppressed slaves – were redeemed from servitude through a series of miracles. The Creator basically turned the laws of nature on their head so as to clearly demonstrate His Presence even in the environs of the lowly Egypt. G-d showed how He not only created the world, but He continues to be involved in the world, on a moment-by-moment basis. If G-d decrees that water should turn into blood or that hailstones should contain fire, they will. The series of wonders led directly to the emancipation of the Children of Israel as well as the destruction of the idol worshipping religious system of the heretofore prevailing customs of the Egyptians. Not only were the oppressors judged so were their gods. The whole world witnessed or heard about this systematic destruction of Egyptian evil and came to understand that indeed the Jewish people were the ‘chosen people’ who were given a special mission to accomplish in the created universe. The world shook in terror at the awesome power demonstrated in behalf of the Jews. And along came Amalek… The Amalakites were not fools (at least not in the way that foolishness is typically understood). They knew that the power of the Almighty was truly overpowering. However, they wanted to demonstrate the human frailty of the Jewish people – meaning they wanted to show that despite the chosen-ess of the Jews they were still (only) human and were therefore vulnerable to attack. Imagine that; they sacrificed themselves in order to show the ‘weakness’ of G-d’s chosen nation – and by association of G-d Himself! Where does this Chutzpah come from? How can anyone be so brazen?! The Rebbe explains it comes from a deep and inner coldness. Amalek was unimpressed with G-dliness. Complacency and indifference are our enemies. Perhaps that is the most ‘chilling’ aspect of Amalek; we have an inner Amalek. And that, my friends, is our big challenge in life – to utterly vanquish that inner Amalek. How is that done? That is done by embracing Torah and Mitzvah with vim and vigor, with love and with energy! We infuse our service with passion and joy. And this divinely-mandated mission is helped along by the joyousness of Purim, when we were again saved by the Almighty from our enemies who sought to destroy us and instead were destroyed themselves. May the joyousness of Purim influence our daily lives and prepare us for the ultimate redemption with Moshiach now! Passover Plans ‘16 Chabad at La Costa will again be offering a full array of Passover activities designed to educate the Jewish residents of North County in an engaging and meaningful way while encouraging additional observance of the special Passover traditions. To properly celebrate Passover preparation is the key, and to this end there will be a two-part ‘Preparing for Passover’ Seminar taught by Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort, Director of Chabad at La Costa. On consecutive Mondays, April 4th and 11th at 7pm the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of Passover will be explored. Not only will practical advice be offered (“How do I prepare my home for this special holiday?”), but also rich stories and explanations will be shared (“Wow! Such great thoughts to share at the Seder Table!”). There is no cost to attend this popular two-part series, however reservations are required by sending an email to [email protected] or calling 760-943-8891. For the first time we are thrilled to announce that Rabbi Eilfort will be offering a tour of the newly-opened Gelson’s Supermarket (located directly adjacent to Chabad) with an emphasis upon Kosher for Passover products found in the store. The tour will take place on Wednesday, April 13th at 7:30pm and everyone is invited to join. There is no charge to participate. In addition to the classes mentioned above Chabad will be hosting a complete schedule of joyous and meaningful holiday services (holiday flyer to be mailed). The highlight of the holiday are the warm and traditional Sedarim (traditional Passover meals). When the rabbis, of blessed memory, codified the Seder, they managed to create the ultimate in interactive learning opportunities. The hands-on approach of the Seder, and the inclusive nature of the narrative, ensures that everyone – particularly the children – have a meaningful experience that will not only make a strong positive impression now, but will create positive lifelong memories. Everyone is invited to partake of our home-cooked, Kosher for Passover, Sedarim. Information and reservations can be made by visiting www.ChabadatLaCosta.com. If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email[email protected] your request. Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family and the new Board was dedicated by the Alter Family. We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that will shortly be going up. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).
The donation is only $360 per plaque for either the Memorial Board or the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.
Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation. Shul Etiquette Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family. At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul. It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like. Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services. We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30).
