Iyar – Sivan 5779 / June ‘19

Shavuot is Coming!

The Holiday of Shavuot marks the anniversary on which G-d gave the Jewish people the Torah. This is considered the single greatest event in all of history. To celebrate we make sure to attend the synagogue and listen to the Torah reading of the 10 Commandments (bring your friends, too). We also stay up (all night if possible) learning Torah, eat dairy meals, and joyously celebrate this awesome event. Please note the special services and times found in the shul Shavuot brochure.

It is considered a great Mitzvah to listen to the 10 Commandments. Year after year, since the year 2448 in the Jewish calendar (we are now in the year 5779), Jews all over the world, wherever they lived, endeavored to listen to the timeless words of the Torah. We will use our very special Holocaust Torah to mark this awesome occasion. Shavuot is one of the Biblical Holidays, when the Jews would make a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. Another way we mark the importance of the day is by reciting the Yizkor Memorial Prayer on the 2nd day of the holiday for our deceased loved ones and to remember Jewish martyrs from history.

This year Shavuot comes out on Sunday, June 9th – Monday, June 10th. The reading of the 10 Commandments will be on Sunday at 11am (services both days begin at 10am). The Yizkor Memorial service takes place on Monday and begins at 12pm. Following services both days there will be a magnificent dairy Kiddush with an Ice Cream Bar. We specifically eat dairy on Shavuot for reasons that will be explained during services.

Please note that we will also be having a Community Friday night dinner on the Shabbat immediately preceding Shavuot. Friday, June 7th at 7:30pm. It will be delicious,

spiritually inspiring, and lots of fun. Reservations required. $18 adults & $10 kids.

Everyone is invited and encouraged to be here and bring their Jewish friends for these tremendous holiday celebrations!

Hebrew School Graduation – June 9th

This year we hope to include still more, but we need your help. When it comes to the ads, which is what enables us to send the calendars out for free to hundreds and hundreds of friends, we have found that when YOU help us sell ads, we truly prosper. Do you own or patronize a business that can use more exposure to our community? Those who help will receive free date dedications. Please contact Rabbi E for further information!

Security

We have been hard at work enhancing our security. We have always been extremely sensitive to the need for adequate security and have endeavored to balance the need for outstanding security with maintaining a warm, open, and welcoming feeling at our center. Following the horrible attack at Poway we have been in close contact with our local law enforcement as well as foremost experts in the field. We are further enhancing our measures. The first thing we have done is hired a uniformed, armed guard. We are also coordinating a membership-based professionally trained security team. There are roles for everyone who wants to be part of the team, from greeters to observers to actual guards.

Needless to say the numerous enhancements that we are enacting has had a major impact on our budget. The guard must be paid (nearly $1,000 per month) and the training and equipping of our own team is expensive (about $4,000 per candidate). We are asking our friends and supporters to help us cover these costs. They can no longer be viewed as optional; they are just as important as paying the electric bill, if not more so.

If you are able to help in this critical appeal please log onto www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/donate, or simply mail a check to the shul. But please do something and please do it right away. Thank you!
