This week’s Torah portion, Pinchas, tells the story of someone who never expected to become a leader. Pinchas was neither the oldest nor the most prominent member of the Jewish people. Yet when everyone else hesitated, he understood what had to be done and acted with courage and conviction. His reward was not fame or power, but G-d’s blessing of peace.

Most of us will never face a moment as dramatic as Pinchas did. But we regularly encounter smaller moments that call for the same kind of responsibility. It’s easy to assume that someone more experienced or more qualified will step in. Waiting for the perfect person often means nothing gets done. Sometimes the person who makes the biggest difference is simply the one willing to take the first step.

The world is shaped not only by extraordinary people, but by ordinary people who refuse to look the other way, and Pinchas reminds us that greatness often begins with a simple decision: when something needs to be done, be the one who does it.

Each of us has opportunities to improve the lives of those around us. We simply need the willingness to act when the moment calls for it.

Blessed is the True Judge

We are sorry to announce the passing of a dear friend and member of our community, Arnold Tubis. May his family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem!

We will be visiting his gravesite Friday immediately following the unveiling ceremony for Gary Plavnick to say some prayers in his memory.

Minyan Needed at El Camino Memorial Cemetery

On Friday July 3rd at 11 AM at will be the stone unveiling ceremony for Gary Plavnick. A minyan is needed to be able to recite Kaddish. Please let Rabbi know that you can be there. El Camino Memorial Cemetery in Sorrento Valley (5600 Carroll Canyon Rd., S. Diego). 

 

Three Weeks of Mourning Begin

Tammuz 17 is a fast day, devoted to mourning the breaching of Jerusalem's walls and the other tragic events that occurred on this day (see "Today in Jewish History") and repenting and rectifying their causes. We refrain from all food and drink from "dawn" (about an hour before sunrise, depending on location) until nightfall. Special prayers and Torah readings are added to the day's services.

"Three Weeks" Begin

The 17th of Tammuz also marks the beginning of The Three Weeks period of mourning which culminates on the 9th of Av, commemorating the conquest of Jerusalem, the destruction of the Holy Temple and the dispersion of the Jewish people.

Weddings and other joyful events are not held during this period; like mourners, we do not cut our hair, and various pleasurable activities are limited or proscribed. (Consult the Code of Jewish Law (Shulchan Aruch) or a qualified rabbi regarding specific proscriptions).

The Lubavitcher Rebbe urged that the Three Weeks should be a time of increased giving of charity and Torah study (in keeping with the verse (Isaiah 1:27), "Zion shall be redeemed by law, and her returnees by charity"), particularly the study of those portions of Torah that deal with the laws and the deeper significance of the Holy Temple.

 

4th of July Weekend Celebrations

We have enjoyed a transformative year! Bigger and better things are on the horizon, please G-d. The Addy and Arthur Hale Educational level has been the driving story of the year. After a lot of blood, sweat, and tears we are in our new space and using it daily. It adds so much to our campus. While the demo progresses upstairs, we are even using it for Davening in the mornings.

But there is more going than just the building of our physical building. We are building a community, thanks to all of you.

We have hosted countless services, events, and classes on campus and off. Together we have brought meaning and joy to a lot of friends. Imagine, we have conducted events as varied as uplifting and inspirational High Holiday services and cookouts on the beach. We have hosted women’s events and our ever-popular men’s club. We have offered hundreds of religious counseling sessions. We have officiated at weddings, funerals, and everything in between.

Our preschool, Coastal Gan, has gone ‘gangbusters’! In fact, we are full and have a waiting list for next year, Baruch Hashem. Our Gan has a sterling reputation, and we are getting inquiries by families as far away as S. Diego.

These successes are due to our dedicated staff and amazing community.

Channah & Arthur Hale Jewish Learning Center Building Update

 

NEW ART INSTALLATION UNDERWAY!

Our community has benefited tremendously due to the generosity of Addy and Arthur Hale, of blessed memory. There are numerous families and individuals who have also stepped forward to bring our dreams to life. We have commissioned a very talented artist, Kayla Freeman, to create a one-of-a-kind art piece that will honor those who have given so much to our community. She started work on Wednesday and will be here for the next week or two until the work is complete.

IT WILL BE MAGNIFICENT! More details to come…

The Educational Level is completed! We are in the process of moving everything into its place. Anyone who wants a personal tour is invited to respond to this message.

Upstairs Commercial Fridge has been Removed making way for Ice Machine and Mixer.

The ice machine has been installed and is producing ice.

The Phase 3 Demolition is COMPLETED. 

The walls of the Rabbi’s old office and the previous library have been torn down. 

The wiring has been rerouted and the HVAC system has been updated.

The T-bar ceiling has been reconfigured.

The painting has been completed.  

Our new flooring looks magnificent! 

The downstairs furniture has arrived and has been assembled. 

The Great Room downstairs looks magnificent and is getting better every day.

In time for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, this four-session course reflects on the Jewish ethics, ideas, and values that inspired and influenced America’s founders—and that still shape our government and society today.  

Was it always self-evident that all people are “created equal”? What is the “pursuit of happiness”? What inspired America’s system of checks and balances? And looking ahead, what steps can we take to build a just and united future?

G-d Bless America!

AKA 250 Years of American Exceptionalism & What It Has Meant for the Jewish People

Excitement is in the air as we approach the 4th of July. This coming 4th of July has added meaning, as we will be celebrating 250 of American independence. When we look at the ‘American Experiment’ objectively, it is easy to see how these United States has not only brought incredible blessings to those who are fortunate enough to live here, but also how the entire free world has benefited.

Why has America been successful in creating so much wealth for so many people, which raised the standard of living for all?

The US is a constitutional republic. The laws enshrined in the Constitution, which has been protected and nurtured by the divided but equal powers within the government, has created the perfect balance of individual human rights with the collective strength of a nation built on shared values and aspirations.

How can this be? How can individual freedoms coexist with shared values?

The preamble of the Constitution says it best:

"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, ensure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

There are six basic principles articulated here:

Form a more perfect Union: To create a better, more unified federal system than the one that existed under the previous Articles of Confederation.

Establish Justice: To create a fair legal system where laws are applied equally to all citizens.

Ensure domestic Tranquility: To maintain peace and order within the country.

Provide for the common defense: To protect the nation and its citizens from outside threats.

Promote the general Welfare: To ensure the well-being and prosperity of the population.

Secure the Blessings of Liberty: To protect the freedoms of current Americans and ensure those rights are passed down to future generations.

Ours is not a pure democracy. The framers understood the risks inherent in a pure democracy. What is to stop a majority from tyrannizing the minority if not a Constitutional framework that protects individual rights and property? A democracy not harnessed by individual rights is doomed to chaotic failure.

Another interesting ingredient in the success of our country is the moral standing of its citizens. Those who gifted us this form of government understood that a democratic country whose citizens are immoral will fail. Progressively larger voting blocs will vote themselves increased power and wealth at the expense of their less numerous neighbors. 

With these ideas in mind, we can now fully appreciate the success of the Jewish people in America. Finally, we weren’t held back by a glass ceiling. Our fellow Americans are overwhelmingly kind and moral people. This coupled with a Constitution that protects our equal rights and property rights, has unleashed Jewish creativity. Our industrious nature is allowed to flourish, and it has in a big way!

And how have we utilized this unprecedented freedom, wealth, and influence?

The Jewish people in America have not only used their blessings to build up a robust Jewish life in the form of synagogues, day schools, Yeshivas, and countless Jewish institutions, but also Jews have been generous supporters of non-Jewish charitable enterprises.

A veritable Jewish renaissance has blossomed on the shores of the New World unleashing enormous blessings that have benefited all of humankind!

G-d has certainly blessed America. May G-d continue to bless the US. May we continue to be worthy of G-d’s blessings. And most importantly, may we use the Almighty’s blessings to bring the most benefits to all of humanity!

Parshas Pinchas – Three Weeks of Mourning

I Kings 18:46-19:21.

The prophet Elijah is the main protagonist of this week's haftorah. According to tradition, Elijah shared the same soul as Pinchas, the hero of this week's Torah portion. They also both zealously fought on G‑d's behalf, while disregarding the dangers involved.

Following the showdown with the Baal prophets at Mount Carmel, which led to the execution of the Baal priests, the evil Queen Jezebel issued a death sentence for Elijah. Elijah fled to the Judean desert and asked G‑d to take his life. While he slept, an angel awoke him and provided him with food and drink. Reenergized, Elijah went for forty days until he arrived at Mount Horeb (Sinai), and he slept in a cave on the mountain. And the word of G‑d came to him and asked him for the purpose of his visit. "And [Elijah] said: 'I have been zealous for G‑d, the Lord of Hosts, for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant. They have torn down Your altars and they have killed Your prophets by the sword, and I have remained alone, and they seek my life to take it."

Elijah was instructed to leave the cave and stand on the mountain: "Behold! G‑d's Presence will pass." There was a great and strong wind splitting mountains and shattering boulders, but Elijah realized that G‑d was not in the wind. Then came an earthquake followed by fire, but again Elijah understood that not in the earthquake nor the fire was G‑d. After the fire there was a subtle silent voice, and Elijah realized that the Divine Presence had appeared.

G‑d asked Elijah again for the purpose of his visit, and Elijah repeated his earlier response. G‑d instructed Elijah to go to Damascus and anoint Hazael as king of Aram and Jehu as king of Israel and to anoint Elisha as a prophet in his stead. These three would continue Elijah's battle against the Baal.

Elijah followed the instructions and he immediately found Elisha and recruited him as his aide and eventual successor.

 

Nutshell for "Divrei Yirmiyahu"  Haftorah (Three Weeks)

When Shabbat Parshat Pinchas falls out during the  Three Weeks of mourning for Jerusalem, between the fasts of 17 Tammuz and 9 Av as is the case this week, we read a special haftorah which is the first of a series of three "haftorot of affliction" instead of the above one.

Jeremiah 1:1-2:3.

Jeremiah recounts how G‑d appointed him as prophet — despite his initial reluctance to accept the task — and tells of the encouragement G‑d gave him to fulfill his crucial mission.

He then describes two prophetic visions he was shown. The first featured an almond tree branch. G‑d explained to Jeremiah that just like an almond tree is very quick to blossom, so too G‑d will carry out his plan — to punish the Jews for their sins — in due haste.

The second vision was that of a boiling pot whose foam was directed northward. G‑d explained that this was an allusion to the afflictions the Jewish people would suffer at the hands of the people from the north of the Holy Land, namely Babylon. G‑d will cause the kingdoms of the north to lay siege on Jerusalem and Judea and He will pass judgment on the Jewish people due to their abandonment of G‑d's ways and their idol worship.

G‑d then encouraged Jeremiah to deliver the prophecy and not to fear the Jewish populace who would certainly not take kindly to such harsh words.

The haftorah ends with a reassuring prophecy to the people: "Go and call out in the ears of Jerusalem, saying: so said G‑d: 'I remember to you the loving-kindness of your youth, the love of your nuptials, your following Me in the desert, in a land not sown. Israel is holy to G‑d, the first of His grain; all who eat him shall be guilty, evil shall befall them, says G‑d.'"

The Foundation Project  - City Approved Plan

We are raising funds that will be used towards completing our basement. This project will include a TEEN LOUNGE, MULTIPURPOSE ROOM, a LIBRARY, OFFICES, STORAGE SPACE, BATHROOMS, and more. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email   [email protected] your request.

 

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

NOW is the time to join the family! Membership includes High Holiday seats and discounts on other programs and activities. However, the main reason to join is to demonstrate your commitment to the future of Judaism in our area and to our community.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!
