In addition to the many other ways this year’s High Holidays will be different, one thing that stands out to me is that on the first day of Rosh Hashanah we will not blow the shofar. Because it is Shabbat, the shofar is not sounded, and the last time that happened was 11 years ago.
The sages of the Talmud forbade blowing the shofar when it is Shabbat, for fear that it would lead to violating the laws of Shabbat (specifically the laws of carrying an object in a public domain).
Under normal circumstances, the mitzvah of blowing shofar should have overridden the concern of a potential Shabbat violation. Yet shofar is still suspended, because all the spiritual achievements that are accomplished through the blowing of shofar are fulfilled this year simply by Rosh Hashanah being on Shabbat. There is therefore no need to blow the shofar at all.
And since Rosh Hashanah is the head of the year, the entire year will be imbued with a sense of Shabbat, heightened spiritual awareness every day of year, which will lead to the ultimate Shabbat, the coming of Moshiach!

Our Community’s Response to the Pandemic
5780 is nearly complete. Rosh Hashanah, our New Year and new beginning will be ushered in this coming Friday night. There is no doubt that this year has included severe challenges for us personally and communally. We began the year dealing with Nechama's breast cancer and subsequent surgery, went on to grapple with coronavirus (which we are still battling), experienced civil unrest, and are still fighting unprecedented wild fires.
The politically motivated finger pointing has been a constant, driving wedges between friends, families, and communities alike. People have stopped seeing other people and instead see political allies or enemies. We are viewing others as walking ideologies instead of fellow human beings. There will be NO politics from our pulpit! Shul is meant to be in a sanctuary, a place where we come to connect with G-d and each other.
What has been our response to these numerous challenges?
THANKS TO YOU, our amazing friends and supporters, we have fought the darkness in the most effective way possible, by adding light! Following is a short list of what we have done and/or what we are doing to make our corner of this world a brighter place.
Tuition-free Hebrew School ! The Jewish education of our youth MUST continue! The economic situation is tough, but we are tougher. If you know of a Jewish child who needs Hebrew school (in person or via Zoom) LET US KNOW. We thank our amazing visionaries whose dedication and generosity allow us to take this unprecedented step of fully subsidized tuition in educating our youth!
Challahs and Chicken Soup . Over the last six months we have distributed THOUSANDS of Challahs and Chicken Soups bringing the beauty and spirit of Shabbat into homes throughout North County. Special thank you to Channah Hale and many others, including our incredible corps of volunteers, who have made this possible! If you want some just let us know!
Safe & Secure In-Person High Holiday Services . If you wish to join us for safe and secure High Holiday services simply log onto www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/hhrsvp and reserve your spot. No tickets. Donate what you feel comfortable giving. We do have a very limited number of seats available and therefore reservations are required. We will not only be exceeding all recommended protocols regarding coronavirus, we will also have a professional, uniformed security guard.
DIY (Do It Yourself) Care Packages . For Passover it was 'Seder in a Box' for hundreds. Then Shavuot came and we made sure hundreds of gift bags went out filled with delicious food, profound Torah thoughts, and a guide for holiday observance. Now it is the High Holidays and we are in the midst of delivering hundreds more gift bags, including a special effort to reach our local Jewish seniors - letting them know they are not forgotten during this crisis. Honey Cakes, Israeli Honey, Fresh-Baked Challos, an informative Holiday Guide, a Yizkor Memorial Prayer Book, even a Children's Activity book and gift, and much more are all included! We are determined to help YOU celebrate the High Holidays in the most meaningful way possible. We will NOT allow coronavirus to get us down. If you are local and want a holiday gift bag all you have to do is let us know.
Lulav & Esrog Sets for EVERYONE (regardless of ability to pay) . An anonymous donor has stepped forward to subsidize Lulav and Esrog sets for everyone who wants one. Article of the Week, Living with the Times
Rosh Hashanah 5781

This week we are not only celebrating Shabbos, but we are also ushering in a New Year, 5781. Many of us are uttering a sigh of relief as we close the door on 5780. In Hebrew we write out 5780 as Tav Shin Pay, which some have read as Tihay Shnas Pandemic (It will be the year of pandemic). According to that reading we are entering Tav Shin Pay Alef - Tihay Shnas AIN Pandemic – It will be the year WITHOUT pandemic.
In all seriousness no one would argue that this has been a stress free year. Between covid with its death tolls, national lockdowns, and massive unemployment, civil unrest, and vast and destructive wildfires, 5780 has been a truly memorable year that we all would sooner forget. We look forward hopefully, wistfully even, for a better tomorrow. A great Rabbi once said that life is like a giant wheel that is continually turning. You should not lose hope, even when on the bottom, for when you are on the bottom you can only go up. G-d willing it is our time to go up! In fact the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous memory, wrote in a thought published in 5751 (30 years ago) that this year will be Tihay Shnas Pila’os Arenu – It will be the year that I (G-d) will show you wonders! Amen – so may it be!
We will stand before Almighty G-d and beseech Him for a year of blessing and success. When we listen to the clarion call of the Shofar on Sunday we will again accept G-d as our King, we will remind G-d (and ourselves) of the Jewish legacy of total dedication to Him even to the extent of self-sacrifice, and we will return to our loving Father in Heaven by thoroughly repenting for our trespasses of this past year. Of course Rosh Hashanah begins on Shabbos, the holy day, which means this will be a year infused with the blessings of Shabbos. And for those of you who study Jewish texts you realize that the future era, the times of Moshiach are going to be a time of enhanced G-dly revelations – and that our current Shabbos is a foretaste of that time.
This morning when I arose in the predawn hours I was thinking about my theme for the sermons I will deliver on Rosh Hashanah. Of course I have been thinking about it, and actually working on it, for weeks already. In fact it says in the official Rabbi’s handbook that any Rabbi who does not start thinking about his High Holiday sermons by the end of Chanukah is derelict in his duties, but now, in the last moments, the theme of the sermon fills our consciousness. I was thinking about last year’s Rosh Hashanah and wondering, “WHAT HAPPENED?! How did we end up here?!”
And then I decided to count my blessings. (Disclaimer: you are about to see a whole bunch of exclamation points because I am having trouble containing my enthusiasm.) I watched my loved ones sleeping peacefully in their beds. I looked out of my window and saw a beautiful world around me. Then I looked back at my house as I was pulling out and thinking, “Wow! That is MY house (technically it is still the bank’s, but you get the gist).” I came to our gorgeous shul and slowly took in its beauty, particularly the sanctuary, and I thought about the meaning of sanctuary and how our shul provides it. I thought about my family, friends, and community and continued to count my blessings. So many blessings! I thought about the relative peacefulness in the Holy Land and marveled at the new Abraham Accords, bringing a measure of peace between Israel and some of her Arab neighbors. That is something I had serious doubts that I would ever see in my lifetime. Now I think, I truly believe, more of the same is coming!
And then it dawned on me; I am feeling overwhelmingly OPTIMISTIC about 5781!
While I staunchly believe in Divine Providence, that G-d guides our steps and leads us where we need to go, I also believe that we play an indispensable part in where that path leads us. I firmly believe that we can will a positive year filled to overflowing with Divine Blessings! I am absolutely positive that with a positive attitude based upon gratitude for all that I have, that I am MORE LIKELY to see those blessings in a revealed way. And I am absolutely sure those blessings are available to each and every one of us!

Haftarah Thought From: Chabad.org
Day 1:
I Samuel 1:1–2:10
The haftorah for the first day of Rosh Hashanah describes the birth of the prophet Samuel to Elkanah and his wife Chanah, who had been childless for many years. This echoes the story discussed in the day’s Torah reading, about Sarah giving birth to Isaac after many years of childlessness.
During one of her annual pilgrimages to Shiloh, the site of the Tabernacle, Chanah tearfully and quietly entreated G‑d to bless her with a son, promising to dedicate him to His service. Eli the high priest saw her whispering, and berated her, thinking that she was a drunkard. After hearing Chanah’s explanation, that she had been whispering in prayer, Eli blessed her that G‑d should grant her request.
Chana conceived and gave birth to a son whom she called Shmuel (Samuel). Once the child was weaned, she brought him to Shiloh and entrusted him to the care of Eli.
The haftorah ends with Chanah’s prayer, wherein she thanks G‑d for granting her wish, extols His greatness, exhorts the people not to be haughty or arrogant, and prophesies regarding the Messianic redemption.
Day 2:
Jeremiah 31:1–19
The haftorah for the second day of Rosh Hashanah talks about G‑d’s everlasting love for His people, and the future ingathering of their exiles. In the last verse of this hauntingly beautiful haftorah, G‑d says, “Is Ephraim [i.e., the Children of Israel] not My beloved son? Is he not a precious child, that whenever I speak of him I recall him even more?” This follows one of the primary themes of the Rosh Hashanah prayers, our attempt to induce G‑d to remember us in a positive light on this Day of Judgment.
Jeremiah begins by affirming G‑d’s love for the Jewish people. “With everlasting love I have loved you; therefore I have drawn lovingkindness over you.”
Because of this love, G‑d assures His nation that they have a very bright future awaiting them. “I will yet build you up, then you shall be built forever, O virgin of Israel; you will yet adorn yourself with your tambourines, and go forth in joyous dance.” Jeremiah then describes the ingathering of the exiles, when all of Israel will be returned to the Holy Land: “You will again plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria . . . Behold, I will bring [Israel] from the land of the north, and gather them from the ends of the earth . . . a large assembly will return here. Weeping with joy they will come, and with compassion I will lead them . . . I will turn their mourning into joy, and will console them and gladden them after their sorrow.”
Jeremiah then describes the heavenly scene, where the silence is broken by the sound of bitter weeping. Our Matriarch Rachel refuses to be consoled, for her children have been exiled. G‑d responds: “Still your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears . . . There is hope for your future; the children shall return to their border.”

We are Open for Services for the High Holidays!!
High Holiday Services are Inside OR Outside! It is YOUR Choice!
Due to the updated guidelines issued by the Governor’s office and with the agreement from Rabbinic authorities we will be offering services this Shabbos INSIDE of the sanctuary AND outside in the breezeway. We will be keeping our occupancy at 25% of capacity inside – so please, if you wish to join us, immediately log onto www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/hhrsvp. Those who wish to sit in the breezeway for services are welcome to do so.
Please note that we have invested heavily so as to be able to open up safely and comfortably. In fact, we are exceeding the protocols called for by the governmental agencies. You might say that, “We answer to a Higher Authority.”
We have newly installed shade ‘sails’ over our patios enabling us to offer more covered seating outside. A sincere thank you to Jon and Julie Rozansky for sponsoring the sails!
We have also bought partitions so that the Torah reader is divided from the person called to the Torah for an Aliyah. Air purifiers / HEPA filters have also been bought. Masks are available for those attending services, which must be worn at all times while on campus, as well as gloves for those who wish to wear them.
All of these measures taken together with the procedures already established, which include the use of hand sanitizer and handwashing regularly, sanitized prayers books, sanitized restrooms and surfaces etc., will produce a safe experience. With that being said we remind everyone that those who have been exposed to anyone with the virus within the last 14 days, those with symptoms, or those whose doctors advise them not to participate, should not, under any circumstances, come to shul. But rather should pray at home.

Due to the economic hardships created by the pandemic we will be offering Tuition Free Hebrew School this year. Families are struggling to make ends meet, but we cannot allow the children to suffer. We are offering two options – In-person learning (outdoor and indoor classes, socially distant, masks on), and virtual learning. Please respond to this message for further information. We are the only synagogue in the county making such an offer! Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email [email protected] your request.
Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.
Hebrew School & C-Kids
Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing’. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).
The donation is only $500 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.
Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
