MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
 

The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are called “Aseret Yemei Teshuvah,” often translated as “The 10 Days of Repentance,” but the truth is that the Hebrew word “teshuvah” is better translated as “return” rather than “repentance.”

While emphasis on repenting for our past misdeeds is indeed laudable, the primary focus must be on repairing our relationship with G-d. That’s what “return” means. Throughout the year we may have strayed, our relationship with G-d may have taken a hit, but during these 10 days we have the opportunity to return to our true selves.

This is even more so on Yom Kippur itself, the day that the essence of our souls is revealed. More than mere repentance, and even more than returning, we discover that we never really left. Despite everything we may have done, the deepest part of us—our G-dly essence—was never affected; and we discover that on Yom Kippur.

Living with the Times

Parshat Ha’azinu-Shabbat Shuvah 5781

This Shabbos we read the portion titled “Ha’azinu” which means to hearken. The portion is primarily a warning of the consequences of disloyalty and betrayal. If the Jewish people will make poor choices, G-d forbid, there will be consequences – sometimes very harsh. Moshe imparted these words of wisdom in a poetical form. This particular song is written in a unique style within the Torah scroll, with each column split signifying that is a song or poem. Speaking of unique, in general we do not commit to memory the exact wording of the Torah, and if we do know it by heart we do not recite the words by heart. This portion we specifically do try to commit to memory so that we can recite it by heart.

We see that Moses invoked Heaven and Earth to serve as witnesses to the warning he would utter. That is so no subsequent generation could claim that the warning was never issued, Heaven and Earth will ‘testify’ to the contrary.

It cannot be emphasized enough how important, how very crucial it is for our continued existence as a nation with a specifically ordained divine mission, to look to our Torah for guidance. Moses, who has always and will always be intrinsically connected with the Torah, knew that his time as leader was rapidly coming to an end. Joshua was prepared to take over the mantle of leadership, and would in fact prove to be a great leader. But Moses was so intimately connected with his people that he was compelled to illustrate in stark relief the necessity of remaining true to the wishes of the Almighty. Articulating this admonition/warning poetically certainly emphasizes the need for its scrupulous observance. And just in case one doesn’t quite ‘get’ the centrality of this contract, we developed the custom of committing these sacred words to memory.

This Shabbos is called Shabbat Shuva – it is the Shabbos of repentance. From the first day of the New Year, Rosh Hashanah, through the conclusion of Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, it is a time of serious and continual self-reflection. In fact, it is always an appropriate time to return to G-d through feeling genuine regret for our sins, specifying those sins to the Almighty, and resolving to not repeat them. But there are designated times that are more conducive for this particular form of Divine service. The 10 Days of Repentance are certainly a most conducive time. Within those 10 days we will always have a Shabbat occur. Shabbat itself is conducive to the notion of Teshuvah. This Shabbos is particularly fit for this purpose, as our minds are already more sensitized to our relationship with Our Father Our King.

The beautiful thing is that the more aware we are of G-d in our lives the stronger the connection between ourselves and our Creator becomes. This feeling of closeness brings us to a state of inner peace, happiness, contentment with our physical belongings, and an enhanced desire for the spiritual riches our tradition offers us.

May we all be sealed in the Book of Life and have a meaningful (and easy) fast.

Shabbat Shuvah:
Hosea 14:2-10; Micah 7:18-20.

The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is known as Shabbat Shuva or "Shabbat of Return (Repentance)." The name is a reference to the opening words of the week's haftorah, "Shuva Israel — Return O Israel." This haftorah is read in honor of the Ten Days of Repentance, the days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

The prophet Hosea exhorts the Jewish people to "Return, O Israel, to the L-rd your G‑d," encouraging them to repent sincerely and ask for G‑d's forgiveness. Hosea urges the Jews to put their trust in G‑d, not in Assyria, powerful horses or idols. At that point, G‑d promises to remove His anger from Israel, "I will be like dew to Israel, they shall blossom like a rose." The prophet then goes on to foretell the return of the exiles and the cessation of idol-worship amongst the people.

The haftorah concludes with a  brief portion from the Book of Micah, which describes G‑d's kindness in forgiving the sins of His people. "He does not maintain His anger forever, for He is a lover of kindness. He will have mercy on us, He will grasp our iniquities and cast all our sins into the depths of the sea." Micah concludes with an enjoinder to G‑d to remember the pacts He made with the Patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

Yom Kippur Morning:
Isaiah 57:14-58:14

Today's haftorah discusses the concepts of repentance and fasting, the theme du jour of Yom Kippur.

The prophecy begins with the words "Pave, pave, clear the way; remove the obstacles from the way of My people." A reference to the Yetzer Hara ("evil inclination") which must be removed to pave the way for sincere repentance. G‑d assures that He will not be forever angry at those who repent, and that instead He will heal them and lead them. The wicked, on the other hand, are compared to a turbulent sea: "there is no peace for the wicked."

G‑d exhorts the prophet Isaiah to admonish the people regarding their fasting ways which G‑d finds reprehensible — a message which resonated to this very day:

"Daily they pretend to seek Me, desiring knowledge of My ways . . . 'Why have we fasted and You did not see?' they ask. 'We have afflicted our soul and You do not know?' Behold, on the day of your fast you pursue your affairs, and from all your debtors you forcibly exact payment. Behold, for quarrel and strife you fast, and to strike with a fist of wickedness. You do not fast in keeping with the spirit of the day, to make your voice heard on high. Is this a fast that I will choose? . . . Is it to bow down his head like a bulrush and spread out sackcloth and ashes beneath him?"

Instead, Isaiah teaches the Jews the proper way to fast:

"Loosen the fetters of wickedness, untie the bands of perverseness, send the oppressed free, and break every oppressive yoke. Offer your bread to the hungry, bring the wandering poor into your home. When you see someone naked, clothe him . . . Then you shall call and the L-rd shall answer, you shall cry and He shall say, 'Here I am.' . . . G‑d will always guide you and satiate your soul with radiance; He will strengthen your bones and you will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never cease..."

The haftorah concludes with the promise of great rewards for those who honor and take delight in the Shabbat.

Yom Kippur Afternoon:

Book of Jonah; Micha 7:18-20.

The entire Book of Jonah is read today as it contains an important and timely message on prayer and repentance. Click here for more on the connection between the Book of Jonah and Yom Kippur.

G‑d ordered the prophet Jonah to travel to Nineveh and present its wicked inhabitants with an ultimatum: repent or be destroyed. Jonah refused to comply with this directive, and fled on a boat. Strong winds threatened to destroy the ship, lots were cast among the crew and passengers and the lottery indicated that Jonah was the cause of the turbulent storm. He admitted his guilt and requested to be cast into the sea. Jonah was thrown into the raging sea and the storm abated.

Jonah was swallowed by a big fish, and while in its belly, was moved to repent. The fish regurgitated Jonah.

Jonah proceeded to Nineveh and broadcasted G‑d's word that Nineveh would be overturned in forty days. The people fasted and repented and the divine decree was annulled. When Jonah expressed his displeasure with this result, G‑d taught him a lesson. As Jonah sat on the outskirts of the city, the kikayon plant which was providing him with shade was destroyed by a worm, and Jonah was very upset. "And G‑d said: You took pity on the kikayon, for which you did not toil nor did you make it grow, which one night came into being and the next night perished. Now should I not take pity on Nineveh, the great city, in which there are many more than one hundred twenty thousand people?..."

The haftorah concludes with a  brief portion from the Book of Micah, which describes G‑d's kindness in forgiving the sins of His people. Shabbat & Yom Kippur Services are Inside OR Outside! It is YOUR Choice!

Due to the updated guidelines issued by the Governor’s office and with the agreement from Rabbinic authorities we will be offering services this Shabbos and on Yom Kippur INSIDE of the sanctuary AND outside in the breezeway. We will be keeping our occupancy at 25% of capacity inside – so please, if you wish to join us, immediately log onto www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/hhrsvp. Those who wish to sit in the breezeway for services are welcome to do so.

Please note that we have invested heavily so as to be able to open up safely and comfortably. In fact, we are exceeding the protocols called for by the governmental agencies. You might say that, “We answer to a Higher Authority.”

Masks are available for those attending services, which must be worn at all times while on campus, as well as gloves for those who wish to wear them. 

All of these measures taken together with the procedures already established, which include the use of hand sanitizer and handwashing regularly, sanitized prayers books, sanitized restrooms and surfaces etc., will produce a safe experience.

If you have been exposed to anyone with the virus within the last 14 days, those with symptoms, or those whose doctors advise them not to participate, should not, under any circumstances, come to shul. But rather should pray at home.

Due to the economic hardships created by the pandemic we will be offering Tuition Free Hebrew School this year. Families are struggling to make ends meet, but we cannot allow the children to suffer. We are offering two options – In-person learning (outdoor and indoor classes, socially distant, masks on), and virtual learning. Please respond to this message for further information. We are the only synagogue in the county making such an offer! Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.

Special ‘Different’ Yom Kippur Services this Year

Be prepared for a different looking High Holiday experience. We know that masks are not fun. We also understand that up-tempo services are not what we are used to, especially on the High Holidays. But we also know that Judaism teaches us that the sanctity of life takes precedence over all other considerations.

Additional Outside Yizkor Services Offered

Those who feel the need or desire to say Yizkor specifically at shul, but are concerned with being at shul for an extended period, are welcome to come to one of the two additional outdoor Yizkor services we have scheduled (see below). These services will be outside and brief.

Outdoor Shofar Blowing

The end of Yom Kippur is marked by the Ne’ilah / Closing service, the culmination of which is the blowing of the Shofar. In our effort to help everyone stay safe and feel comfortable the Rabbi will blow the Shofar and recite the associated passages at the entry gate to our campus. This means that people can remain in the parking lot or in the breezeway or in the sanctuary and be able to hear the Shofar.

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Hebrew School & C-Kids

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Currently Distance Learning with Zoom! Our students want to be here!

Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing’. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $500 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to   [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Tzedakah news – Planning for your 2020 taxes

Happy news for those wanting to enroll their child in one of Chabad’s K-12 schools, and who have started saving for their children’s college tuition using a 529 College Savings plan. Tax law passed in 2017 allows those parents (and others) to withdraw money to pay for private school K-12 tuition. You can withdraw up to $10,000 annually, tax free.
