This weekend was supposed to be the International Conference of Chabad Emissaries, known as the “Kinus Hashluchim.” Every year we gather in New York for four days of workshops, plenaries, and inspiration. It is the highlight of our year; an opportunity to meet old friends, share experiences, and to remind ourselves that we are part of the biggest force of positivity in the Jewish world.
Unfortunately, this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the kinus will not be held in-person, and instead will be entirely virtual. While this is a far cry from the real thing, it will still serve as a reminder that Chabad around the world is here for every single Jew in all situations.
This week’s Torah portion, Chayei Sarah, describes how Abraham and Sarah’s son Issac married Rebecca and started a family with her based on the values he learned from his parents. Although Sarah passed away before their marriage, Isaac and Rebbeca still lived their life as though she was very much present and guiding them through thick and thin.
We will continue to do the same in our lives and within our communities, and we will surely persevere and thrive!

Living with the Times By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort
Parshat Chaya Sarah – The Life of Sarah
Defining Life
This week’s portion, titled “Chaya Sarah,” which means the Life of Sarah, deals with Sarah’s death. Odd.
The body of the portion, after discussing Avraham’s purchase of the Cave of Machpailah as a family burial site, talks about the special mission given by Avraham to his trusted servant Eliezer. The mission was to find a wife for Avraham and Sarah’s beloved son, Yitzchak.
The portion then goes on to explain how Avraham gets married to Keturah, who the commentaries explain is actually Hagar. Hagar had reverted to idol worship when she had been previously sent away, but she repented and embraced Monotheism, and was thusly a fitting wife for Avraham. They went on to have more children together.
Finally, at the end of the portion we learn of the passing of Avraham. He was gathered unto his people, the specific description used concerning someone of great righteousness. Next week’s portion will deal with Yitzchak and his newly married wife Rivka.
The name of the portion is indicative of its content, which makes our portion’s name so odd. The portion, as noted above, does not discuss Sarah’s life in the least. Instead it describes life after Sarah.
Or does it?
What is the meaning of life? Why are we here? These are THE big questions in life. This portion tells us the answer. There is more to life, much more, than the ‘rat race.’ A life spent in headlong pursuit of material wealth is not a life at all. The Jewish purpose of life is summed up in one simple sentence articulated in the Talmud: “To make the lowly earth into a dwelling for the Blessed One.”
Everything accomplished by the Patriarchs and Matriarchs is a signpost for us going forward. They demonstrated the correct path and help us along it by having been trailblazers. Sarah didn’t truly die because her progeny are still alive. Sarah had a glorious career during which she and her life partner brought the awareness of the One G-d to a scattered and morally bankrupted populace. She helped changed the world. This can be seen because she successfully reared Yitzchak. Yitzchak would do Avraham and Sarah proud – he carried on with their legacy, successfully passing it on to Yaakov, father of the 12 Tribes of Israel.
It’s wonderful for a parent seeing a child carry on with the family business. It is even better seeing that child become a wonderful human being. It is best of all seeing that child fulfill all of the above and furthermore seeing him/her establish a vibrant, righteous nation, full with good people stretching themselves to serve as G-d’s emissaries in a dark world.
Long live our mother Sarah!

Haftarah Parshat Chaya Sarah
I Kings 1:1-31.
This week's haftorah describes an aging King David, echoing this week's Torah reading, which mentions that "Abraham was was old, advanced in days."
King David was aging, and he was perpetually cold. A young maiden, Abishag of Shunam, was recruited to serve and provide warmth for the elderly monarch.
Seeing his father advancing in age, Adoniahu, one of King David's sons, seized the opportunity to prepare the ground for his ascension to his father's throne upon the latter's passing — despite King David's express wishes that his son Solomon succeed him. Adoniahu recruited two influential individuals — the High Priest and the commander of David's armies — both of whom had fallen out of David's good graces, to champion his cause. He arranged to be transported in a chariot with fifty people running before him, and invited a number of his sympathizers to a festive party where he publicizing his royal ambitions.
The prophet Nathan encouraged Bat Sheva, mother of Solomon, to approach King David and plead with him to reaffirm his choice of Solomon as his successor. This she did, mentioning Adoniahu's recent actions of which the king had been unaware. Nathan later joined the Bat Sheva and the king to express support for Bat Sheva's request. King David acceded to their request: "Indeed," he told Bat Sheva, "as I swore to you by the Lord God of Israel saying, 'Surely Solomon, your son, shall reign after me and he shall sit on my throne in my stead,' surely, so will I swear this day."

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy
Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening’ (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

We want the membership experience to be positive. We want you to feel GOOD about giving. Yes, we have suggested donations, but you should give what you feel you can afford. Due to the economic hardships created by the pandemic we will be offering Tuition Free Hebrew School this year. Families are struggling to make ends meet, but we cannot allow the children to suffer. We are offering two options – In-person learning (outdoor and indoor classes, socially distant, masks on), and virtual learning. Please respond to this message for further information. We are the only synagogue in the county making such an offer! Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.

If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available
Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.
We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.
We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing’. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).
The donation is only $500 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.
Shul Etiquette
Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.
At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.
It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.
Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.
We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
