Rabbi’s Statement

Dear Friends,

Something happened this week that shocked and upset me. I saw one of the most important symbols of our Republic invaded and overrun. Tragically some people lost their lives in the riot. I fully realize that emotions are very high right now due to the result of the election. Some are very happy and others are extremely upset. I too have very strong feelings on the matter.  

First things first: we MUST be kind to one another (ESPECIALLY those on the opposite side of the political divide). We cannot allow politics to divide us, for if we do, the anti-Semites, who were on full display yesterday, win (G-d forbid!). There is never a justification for that type of hooliganism. NEVER!

The Torah commands (not suggests) that we must follow the laws of the land. In fact we learn in the Ethics of Our Fathers that we should pray for the wellbeing of the government, for if not for the government people will consume each other. Tragically, we have seen evidence of this truth not only yesterday but a lot more than what is tolerable this past year.

I am well aware that many have had their faith in our governmental institutions shaken of late. Who is the cause of this is not the point of this letter. Instead, the point is that while politics is important to some, it should not be the be all and end all for any of us. We are commanded to have more important things on our minds.

The bottom line is this – we are blessed to live in the US. The Rebbe described this country as a “Medina shel Chesed,” a country of kindness. Because of the kindness and lawfulness of this country we have prospered here like nowhere else on earth. When there are forces that seek to destroy America we must be principled and stand TOGETHER against it.

The last thing I want to do is inject politics into our communal life, for politics, by its very nature, is divisive. I don’t want to offend anyone, but I have noted with horror that social media has ‘blown up’ and I see hatred growing, hence this letter. Let us not be part of the problem but instead part of the solution. As a good friend said, “When they go low we will go high!”

Let us join TOGETHER, at least in spirit, and remember that our G-d is greater than any of this ‘stuff’. We are all cut from the same cloth. We all share our Father in Heaven, who wants, more than anything else, for His children to love each other. Focus on the beautiful spark of G-dliness that each of us possess, our holy souls!

Shemot – Names (Exodus)

The Springboard Effect

This week’s portion is titled, “Shemot,” which translates as, “Names.” It is the first portion in the second book of the Torah, the Book of Exodus. The name of a portion is always indicative of its content and the same thing goes as far as the name of one of the Books of the Torah. In this case we can therefore assume that the theme of the entire book is hinted at in its name, which incidentally is, “Names.”

Of course we all can understand that the name Exodus makes a lot of sense relative to the content of this book, as the story of the exile and redemption from the Egyptian slavery are detailed – particularly in the first few portions. But how is the theme of names demonstrated?

The great classical commentary Rashi begins his explanation of the portion by teaching that although we were already told the names of the Children of Israel who relocated to Egypt in the final portion of the book of Genesis, nonetheless the Torah repeats the names now to demonstrate G-d’s great love of the Tribes. When someone is very dear his/her name is often repeated. The Midrash relates that the Tribes were compared to stars, which are taken out and called by name by the Almighty.

It turns out that the names assigned to us by our parents are mirrors into our souls. They are not merely superficial garments, but instead are indicative of our essence. In fact, our names touch our essence, as is evidenced that when calling one’s name can even help revive someone who has passed out. This is especially true when speaking about the Tribes of Israel whose names are explained in the Torah. Their parents were extraordinary people who were blessed with Divine Inspiration. Our tradition tells us that our parents were also given a measure of Divine Inspiration when they named us!

When the Jewish people moved to Egypt they were installed in a fine area known as Goshen. They were under the protection and patronage of the righteous Joseph, who was Viceroy of Egypt. But things changed after the last of the Tribes passed away. Pharaoh enslaved the Jews and gave them back-breaking labor. By then the Egyptian culture had already managed to infiltrate the Jewish people. Many Jews embraced all things Egypt with a couple of notable exceptions.

We are taught that the Jewish people kept their Jewish names, and it was partly due to this loyalty to their essential identity that they merited to be redeemed from servitude and triumphantly led out to freedom – ultimately leading to receiving the Torah on Mount Sinai.

It is this idea that also helps us understand why the Egyptian exile was necessary to begin with. The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous memory, explains that the exile was meant to bring out the best in our people. When we are tested and have to overcome difficulties we reach inwardly and grasp onto our most profound inner strength. We hone our skills and sharpen our convictions. This combination is meant to bring out the best in us. The lower we go the higher we ultimately will reach, which I call, “The Springboard Effect.” Interestingly, we now understand that our names reflect this inner essence, this inner strength.

The takeaway for us, during these dark days of the final exile, is for us to get in touch with our essence. We should proudly wear our Judaism ‘on our sleeves,’ and use our Jewish names. We should be mindful that G-d loves us – more intensely than words can adequately describe – and that is why we must go through the exile experience. Yes, it is for our good. The more strongly we hold onto our Jewish identity, the quicker we will achieve the purpose of everything, which is the immediate arrival of our righteous Moshiach!

Haftarah Parshat Shemot

Isaiah 27:6–28:13; 29:22–23.

This week’s haftorah parallels the week’s Torah reading on many levels. One of the parallels is the message of redemption conveyed by Isaiah—“and you shall be gathered one by one, O children of Israel”—that is reminiscent of the message of redemption that G‑d spoke to Moses at the burning bush, a message that Moses then communicated to Pharaoh.

The haftorah vacillates between Isaiah’s prophecies concerning the future redemption, and his admonitions concerning the Jews’ drunken and G‑dless behavior. Isaiah starts on a positive note: “In the coming days, Jacob will take root, Israel will bud and blossom, filling the face of the earth . . .” He mentions G‑d’s mercy for His nation, and the measure-for-measure punishment He meted out upon the Egyptians who persecuted them. And regarding the future redemption: “You shall be gathered one by one, O children of Israel. And it will come to pass on that day that a great shofar will be sounded, and those lost in the land of Assyria and those exiled in the land of Egypt will come, and they will prostrate themselves before the L‑rd on the holy mount in Jerusalem."

The prophet then proceeds to berate the drunkenness of the Ten Tribes, warning them of the punishment that awaits them. “With the feet they shall be trampled, the crown of the pride of the drunkards of Ephraim . . .”

The haftorah ends on a positive note: “Now Jacob will no longer be ashamed, and now his face will not pale. For when he sees his children, the work of My hands, in his midst, who shall sanctify My name . . . and the G‑d of Israel they will revere."

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience ‘Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

We want the membership experience to be positive. We want you to feel GOOD about giving. Yes, we have suggested donations, but you should give what you feel you can afford. Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - NOW

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing’. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). And our NEW Legacy Circle Section coming soon...

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Food

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - Tuition Free Hebrew School

Due to the economic hardships created by the pandemic we will be offering Tuition Free Hebrew School this year. Families are struggling to make ends meet, but we cannot allow the children to suffer. We are offering two options – In-person learning (outdoor and indoor classes, socially distant, masks on), and virtual learning. Please respond to this message for further information. We are the only synagogue in the county making such an offer! Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Currently Distance Learning with Zoom! Our students want to be here!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
