MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

In addition to the regular Torah portion, this week we read the final of four special readings related to the current time of year: the establishment of the Jewish calendar in preparation for the holiday of Passover.

All Jewish holidays occur on particular dates, and these holidays include various laws and observances as commanded in the Torah (such as eating matzah and avoiding chametz on Passover, eating in a sukkah and shaking the lulav on Sukkot, avoiding work on the holidays, and so on), so we could assume that the dates of these holidays are also determined by G-d in the Torah.

But this Torah reading tells us that the opposite is true. The Jewish calendar is set by the Jewish people, based on when witnesses saw the new moon and testified as much in the courts. And when necessary, the courts would postpone hearing the testimony in order for the month to begin and end on predetermined dates. Even today, we follow a perpetually set calendar which was set by man, not G-d.

This is G-d’s reminder to us that He expects us to be a partner in His Torah and His creation. We have the divinely given tools and ability to bring G-dliness into the world we inhabit, and G-d depends on us, so to speak, to make spirituality a reality.

A very special thank you goes out to our “Super Sponsor” Channah Hale who has continuously stepped forward helping us to maintain this service!

We are extremely grateful to those who have reached out to help fund us, enabling us to serve others. Thank you volunteer drivers - you can volunteer to deliver Soup and Challah!

We are seeking additional sponsors for the following dedications:

Next week’s Loaves of Love.

Next week’s Chicken soup.

Next week’s Torah classes.

Note About Sponsorships

You may have noticed that we seek multiple sponsors for the Challah, Soup, and Torah classes. We do this because we need to find ways to cover our budgetary shortfall that has been caused by the coronavirus. The donations coming to the shul have been dramatically reduced. We greatly appreciate those of you who are still supporting us! G-d bless you! We greatly appreciate your understanding as we seek ways of propping up the income necessary to keep things afloat. Your ideas about additional income streams are likewise greatly appreciated!

Vayak’hel – ‘And He Gathered’ & Pikudei – ‘Accounts’

Parshat HaChodesh (The Sanctification of the Month of Nissan)

Shabbat Chazak (Conclusion of the Book of Exodus)

Shabbat Mevorchim (Bless the Upcoming New Month)

All for One and One for All!

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

A lot is happening this Shabbos! We have a double portion (described below), a special additional reading, called Parshat HaChodesh, in honor of the upcoming month of Nissan, which is the month that includes Passover. We conclude the Book of Exodus, which is when we proclaim, “Chazak! Chazak! Vi’nit’Chazaik!” (Stronger! Stronger! And we become stronger!) In other words, may we continue to grow in our Torah study!

It is also Shabbat Mevorchim – The Shabbat that we bless, so named because on the Shabbat before a new month (Rosh Chodesh), we add a special blessing for the upcoming month that it should be a month of redemption, of ingathering of the exiles, and that we should remember that we are all brethren. We ask that G-d should bless the upcoming month to be a month of life, and of peace, for gladness and for joy, for deliverance and for consolation.

There are so many things to think about and there is so little time. Let’s get cracking!

This week’s Torah portions are titled Vayak’hel (And He Gathered) and Pikudei (Accounts). The first portion details the construction of the Tabernacle (Mishkan). And the second portion concerns itself mostly with the accounting of the project; the specific amounts of the various materials used in the construction of the Mishkan.

Question: Why is it necessary for the Torah to repeat the details of the construction? We know that every letter in the Torah is there for a specific reason. When an entire section is repeated there must be a very good reason for it.

Answer: Our Sages discuss this issue and explain that whereas previously the Torah tells of G-d’s commandment to build the Tabernacle, in this portion the Torah tells us that the Jewish people successfully executed the order.

Imagine the implications. Humanity is commanded to build a physical edifice that would serve as the ‘dwelling place’ of the Divine Presence. Humanity has the ability (and obligation) to transform mundane physicality into something that houses/reveals the Infinite! In our portion we see that the Children of Israel were successful in this incredible endeavor. Yes! It can be done. Every additional detail in the successful completion of this divinely mandated mission is yet another ‘feather in the cap’ of humanity, yet another demonstration of our G-dly potential and abilities.

Another Question: Why was it important for the Torah to detail all of the various materials used to the last silver Shekel (coin)?

Another Answer: Here the Torah is teaching us best practices in running a communal project. It is critical that we have transparency, our Rabbis teach. Even Moses, the greatest of all prophets, gave an exact accounting lest anyone suspect him of being anything less than completely transparent.

And the Final Question: The names of the portions seem to indicate opposite ideas in that Vayak’hel means to gather – emphasizing communal responsibilities and dynamics, while Pikudei means to give an accounting, which of course means counting each thing individually. Which is the most important aspect as demanded by Torah, the collective or the individual?

And the Final Answer: Yes. Yes, I said ‘yes.’ The truth is that both aspects are critical to our success. We must be mindful of our individual responsibilities and our communal responsibilities. In America there is an ongoing debate about our individual rights versus our communal responsibilities. Who should be entitled to what? Well, in Judaism we have a very different outlook. We do not ask to what are we entitled? Instead we ask what are my responsibilities to the community, family, friends, and of course G-d? This portion helps understand the balance we must strike between the individual and the community.

And perhaps this is why we read this before the month that includes Passover. It is high time to prepare ourselves for our communal and individual redemption. It is our collective responsibility to make sure that not even one individual is left behind! Our ultimate strength is achieved when individually we make sure we are doing all in our power to insure the unity of all of us, together!

Shabbat Shalom!

Haftarah Parshat HaChodesh

Ezekiel 45:18-46:15.

This special haftorah is a prophecy regarding the Paschal Offering that will be brought during the Messianic Era, reflecting the theme of the Hachodesh Torah reading—Moses' command to the Israelites in Egypt to prepare and bring the Paschal lamb.

This haftorah is part of Ezekiel's prophecy regarding the third Holy Temple—its structure, inauguration and some of the practices that will be observed therein.

The haftorah begins with a description of the various sacrifices that will be offered during the Temple's seven-day inauguration ceremony, and then mentions that on the 14th of Nissan we shall bring the Paschal offering.

Much of the rest of the haftorah is devoted to the sacrifices that will be brought by the "leader," and prescribes his entry and exit from the Temple.

JLI Course - Journey of the Soul; A Fresh Look at Life, Death, and the Rest-in Peace

This is the most attended to Jewish course in the world. Find out why...click the image for more information.

6 Mondays at 7pm on Zoom (link sent to subscribers). Starting Feb. 1
6 Wednesday 2pm for seniors (special rate for this class). Starting Feb 17

Who hasn’t wondered what happens when we die? We know what happens to the body. But what happens to the soul at birth and again at death?

Is there really a “better” place after this one?
Do our loved ones continue to connect with us?
Can I relate to an afterlife if I’m not spiritual?

At once practical and powerful, reflective and relatable, Journey of the Soul teaches a Jewish perspective on life that begins before birth and lasts well after a person’s passing.

It’s a journey we all take, and it’s yours to explore this winter.

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Pay-What-You-Can-Membership

We want the membership experience to be positive. We want you to feel GOOD about giving. Yes, we have suggested donations, but you should give what you feel you can afford. If you cannot comfortably give the suggested amount THAT IS OK. If you can give more than the suggested amount, THANK YOU, IT IS APPRECIATED! We  love and appreciate your participation, and that is that. Please fill out our Membership form online by logging onto: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/Membership.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - NOW

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will  your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.).

The donation is only $500 per plaque for the Memorial Board or $180 for the Tree of Life. Those who wish to participate should send an email to  [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. See article above.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!
