Tazria – Metzora (When a Woman Conceives – The Person with Tzarat)
An Unlikely Gift

This week we read a double portion, Tazria – Metzora, which mean, ‘When a Woman Conceives’ and, ‘The Person with Tzarat.’ Many of the laws of human purity and impurity are covered as are the laws of Tzarat, a leprous-like skin disease caused by certain sins.

Being that purity and impurity as well as Tzarat are largely misunderstood, it would be helpful to try and understand what they really are, as well as what they are not. Let’s begin with impurity and purity – Tumah and Taharah in Hebrew.

Many people misconstrue purity and impurity as being analogous to clean and unclean or righteous and sinful. After studying the laws one can quickly see that this is not the case. A person could be as ‘clean as a whistle’ and still be impure. A person could be as righteous as the greatest sage and still be impure. Both conditions are actually states of spiritual status. 
By way of explanation; one becomes spiritually impure by touching a dead body, for instance. In fact, this is the most severe type of impurity. When in such a state one was prohibited from entering the Holy Temple or eating food that was designated as holy. It was entirely possible to become ritually impure by fulfilling a Mitzvah! For example if someone was traveling and found an unattended body, it is incumbent upon the finder to take care of the needs of the deceased, which would necessarily render him/her impure. By the way, even the Kohen Gadol, the High Priest himself who was always on call to serve in the Holy Temple had to take care of the needs of a dead body if there was no one else to do so. 

Regarding Tzarat, the leprous-like skin condition, we see that it could not only affect an individual on his/her body, but could affect his/her clothes or house. Furthermore, the diagnosis could only come through a Kohen, NOT a doctor. Tzarat was a consequence of numerous sins, most prominent of them was Lashon Harah – evil gossip. Interestingly, the person suffering from Tzarat was placed into quarantine, not so that the disease wouldn’t spread, but instead to demonstrate to the person with the disease that his anti-social behavior resulted in an anti-social situation. The disease only appeared when the Jewish people were on a greater spiritual level than we have been in millennia. Ironically, due to our spiritual coarseness we can no longer contract the disease! 

Clearly it was not pleasant for the person suffering from Tzarat. However, it seems that there was a tremendous bright side. Imagine being the recipient of ‘divine feedback’. Is there not an advantage to experiencing manifested consequences for our behavior? Would it not be beneficial for us to know when we have displeased the Almighty? Those who were afflicted by Tzarat knew definitively that they had work to do and corrections to make. 

Having that level of divine feedback demonstrates that the people in those days had a more profound connection with G-d than we do today. Think of it in terms of someone who has an illness. Is it not better to be diagnosed and then treated, even if the treatment is not pleasant, than to neglect taking care of the condition? 

In today’s world we are awash in secular influences. The atmosphere is generally very far from ideal and, let’s be honest, this has affected us spiritually where we are not as sensitized to holiness as we should be. 

G-d willing we will soon be appropriately sensitized to spirituality, AND we will achieve spiritual greatness obviating the need for any consequences that are not necessarily pleasant. May this time come, the Era of Moshiach, speedily in our days!

Haftarah of Tazria-Metzora

II Kings 7:3-20.
This week's haftorah discusses the story of four men stricken by tzara'at, a skin ailment caused by sins — one of the main topics of this week's Torah reading.
Haftorah's backdrop: King Ben-Hadad of Aram besieged Samaria (the Northern Kingdom of Israel). The resulting famine was catastrophic, reducing many to cannibalism. King Jehoram of Israel wanted to execute the prophet Elisha, considering that his prayers could have prevented the entire tragedy. Elisha reassured the king: "So has G d said, 'At this time tomorrow, a seah of fine flour will sell for [merely] a shekel, and two seahs of barley will sell for a shekel in the gate of Samaria.'" One of the king's officers present scoffed at the prophecy: "Behold, if G d makes windows in the sky, will this thing come about?" Elisha responded, "Behold, you will see with your own eyes, but you shall not eat there from."
Now, four men suffering from tzara'at dwelled in quarantine outside the city. They too were hungry, victims of the famine. They decided to approach the enemy camp to beg for food. They arrived only to find a deserted camp. For "G d had caused the Aramean camp to hear the sound of chariots and the sound of horses, the sound of a great army. And they said to one another, 'Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites and the kings of the Egyptians to attack us.'" The entire enemy army fled, leaving behind their tents, horses, donkeys and provisions.
The four men went to the city and reported their findings to the gatekeepers who, in turn, informed King Jehoram. Though originally thinking that this was an ambush planned by the enemy, the king sent messengers who confirmed the miracle. The people swarmed out of the city and looted the enemy camp, thus breaking the famine and fulfilling Elisha's prophecy.
And the officer? The king placed him in charge of the city gates. He was trampled to death by the rampaging crowds — after seeing the fulfillment of the prophet's words...

Over the past fourteen months the shul has been paused numerous times, we have held services in the breezeway, we have discontinues Kiddushes, we have installed high quality (and expensive) air filtration systems, we have worn masks, and we have socially distanced (all per governmental guidelines). Needless to say we will continue to strictly adhere to all legal guidelines as well as the advice of medical experts.

Baruch Hashem, thank G-d, we have maintained a spotless record! No one has become sick here. We plan on keeping it that way.

Now that most of our members have been vaccinated and San Diego has been taken out of the ‘Purple Tier’ we are ready to begin to encourage people to come home to your community. If you have received both vaccines and are in good health it is time.

We are planning a major holiday celebration for the upcoming Yom Tov of Shavuot! We have done this every year (except last year), but this year we will certainly add some ‘umph’ and pizazz! Lavish community meals will be served. We will have a splendid ice cream party (of Biblical proportions)! We will have our customary dairy Kiddush extraordinaire!

Most importantly we will sit together (socially distanced and masked) and daven as a community! We will listen to the 10 Commandments and we will recite the Yizkor Memorial service.

It is time. It will be safe.

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is  $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School Theme this Week: Tzedakah

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - Tuition Free Hebrew School

Due to the economic hardships created by the pandemic we will be offering Tuition Free Hebrew School this year. Families are struggling to make ends meet, but we cannot allow the children to suffer. We are offering two options – In-person learning (outdoor and indoor classes, socially distant, masks on), and virtual learning. Please respond to this message for further information. We are the only synagogue in the county making such an offer! Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Currently Distance Learning with Zoom! Our students want to be here!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
