Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows. 

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions. 

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage. 

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

Special Shabbos – Please Join Us!

This week Rabbi and Rebbetzin Eilfort & Aaron & Naomi Alter are sponsoring the Kiddush in honor of their Anniversaries! We will be having a complete lunch. We want YOU to join us in our celebration. 

We know that there was a very full crowd here over the holiday and that many of the people were guests from out of town. We greatly appreciate Rabbi and Rebbetzin Duchman for the wonderful positive energy that they brought and spirit (ru’ach) they created. At the same time Rabbi and Rebbetzin Eilfort didn’t have the opportunity to be able to shmooze extensively with our community.

Situation in Israel to be Addressed THIS Shabbos! What Can WE Do?!

New Guidance from the CDC

Baruch Hashem, life is getting back to normal. The CDC has released new guidelines that state that those who have received both vaccines do not have to wear masks indoors. With this being said we still encourage those who come to our shul to wear masks. If you are sick please do NOT come to shul until you feel better! If you have not yet received both vaccines please maintain your social distancing. Everyone should be mindful of what they touch and wash their hands regularly. We are asking everyone to be on the honor system. If you have not had both vaccines please act according to the rules previously stated. 

We will be resuming weekly Kiddushes starting on Shavuos. Those who wish to sponsor a Kiddush should reach out. Basic Kiddush sponsorship starts at $180 and goes up depending on how elaborate the menu. We will practice additional safety protocols so as to ensure a safe environment for the Kiddush. 

Resumption of Kiddushes

As of this Shabbos we will be resuming the serving of a Weekly Kiddush. It has been a long time coming. We will sit near our own families unless you have been fully vaccinated. 

Kiddush sponsors are being sought for upcoming weeks. Please respond to this message if you can sponsor a Kiddush for any occasion (like Birthdays, Yarzeit, Anniversary etc.) The Kiddush can be as ornate or simple as you wish. The donation for a basic Kiddush is $180 and goes up from there depending on what the menu is. Please note that this price includes the cost of preparation, set up, clean up, and all utensils. 

Soup and Challah Going Forward

We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. We will not be delivering it if no request was made. Often times we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!

You may have noticed that we seek multiple sponsors for the Challah, Soup, and Torah classes. We do this because we need to find ways to cover our budgetary shortfall that has been caused by the coronavirus. The donations coming to the shul have been dramatically reduced. Naso – Count

This week we continue in the Book of Numbers with the second portion, Naso, which means Count. It begins by continuing the census of the Levitical families started last week. In the course of this portion we come across a couple of very interesting, and frankly, somewhat ‘exotic’ commandments, Sota and Nazir.
The Sota was a woman whose husband was overcome with a feeling of jealousy and suspicion regarding his wife and a particular man who the husband suspected may have been her paramour. Her fidelity was tested by drinking ‘bitter waters’. If she was guilty the bitter waters would cause a reaction within her that ended in a very unpleasant death for her and the man with whom she sinned. On the other hand, if she was innocent she was blessed with tremendous and profound blessings. Interestingly, if her husband had any ‘skeletons’ in his closet the test would not work. 
The Torah describes the procedure of the test in great detail. We learn in the commentaries how the Cohanim/Priests, who administered the test, did everything in their power to avoid the procedure. The fact is that part of the procedure included erasing the name of Hashem from a parchment, the dust of which was mixed into the water. We never want to see the erasure of the Divine Name. The section of Sota helps us to remember the necessity of clear boundaries in the interactions of the sexes. Many do not know that men and women should not remain in seclusion with each other. This prohibition is called ‘Yichud.’ It also reminds us not to put ourselves in compromising positions or into situations where we may be tempted to act inappropriately. We are forbidden from putting a ‘stumbling block in front of the blind.’ That would include our own evil inclination and animalistic appetites. 
Following the portion of Sota we are taught the laws of a Nazir, also known as a Nazirite. A Nazir voluntarily takes upon himself an oath to maintain an enhanced level of holiness, foreswearing wine or beer, haircuts or shaving, and carefully remaining in a state of ritual purity. Typically the Nazirite status would remain for the articulated amount of time desired by the Nazir. At the end of the process he would bring a sin sacrifice as he resumed his previous status. 
Why bring a sin offering after having lived in a more spiritual and holy manner than previously? The Rebbe answers that by foreswearing some of the permitted blessings of the physical world the Nazir has chosen to purposely miss the opportunity of elevating those elements of physicality. The optimal state for us to assume is one of engagement and refinement of the mundane world thereby elevating it to holiness. 
The Rabbis comment on the proximity of the portion about the Sota with the portion about the Nazir. They explain that when the person sees the downfall of the Sota, he is moved to distance himself from the physical world, at least for some time, hence the Nazirite oath. 
These days we do not really undertake to be a Nazir and we do not administer the test of the Sota. That does not mean, however, that these lessons do no apply. Perhaps now, more than ever, we need to treasure these commandments and pray for the day when Moshiach will come so that we can fulfill the Torah properly! G-d willing, when that happens, there will be NO NEED to administer the test of the Sota, for the ways of sin will be eradicated permanently.

Haftarah of Parshat Naso
Judges 13:2-25.
This week's haftorah describes the birth of Samson, a lifetime nazirite. A condign haftorah for this week's reading, which discusses all the laws of the nazirite.
Manoah and his wife, members of the Tribe of Dan, were childless. One day an angel appeared to Manoah's wife, informing her that she will give birth to a child. This child, the angel instructed, was to be a lifetime Nazirite. In addition, the angel instructed her to abstain from all foods forbidden to a nazirite — such as wine or ritually impure foods — from the moment she would conceive. The angel further informed the woman that her son will save the Jewish people from the Philistine oppression they were enduring at that time.
The soon-to-be-mother told her husband the good news. He entreated G d to send His messenger again — they were unaware at the time that the messenger was an angel. G d sent the angel again, and he repeated his instructions. Manoah and his wife then invited the angel to partake of a special meal they would prepare, but he declined. Instead he encouraged Manoah to offer the goat he wished to slaughter for the meal as a sacrifice to G d. The angel then ascended to the heavens in the flame that devoured the sacrifice.
The haftorah ends with the birth of Samson: "And the lad grew, and G d blessed him."

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

We want the membership experience to be positive. We want you to feel GOOD about giving. Yes, we have suggested donations, but you should give what you feel you can afford. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is  $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Hebrew School & C-Kids

Hebrew School Theme this Week: 

FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER - Tuition Free Hebrew School

Due to the economic hardships created by the pandemic we will be offering Tuition Free Hebrew School this year. Families are struggling to make ends meet, but we cannot allow the children to suffer. We are offering two options – In-person learning (outdoor and indoor classes, socially distant, masks on), and virtual learning. Please respond to this message for further information. We are the only synagogue in the county making such an offer! Morah Chaya has worked diligently to create an amazing curriculum that will educate and inspire our students. Our teachers will always offer lots of positive reinforcement to the students so that they will not only learn, but they will ENJOY the EXPERIENCE! Please get back to us and let your friends know.

Give your children the Jewish education that they deserve! Our Sunday Hebrew School offers lots of hands-on activities and positive reinforcement. Students learn Hebrew language skills, Jewish living and observance, Jewish history, and so much more! We include arts & crafts, field trips, and holiday programming to make their experience even more enjoyable. Your child will have fun as he or she gains an appreciation for the ‘why’s and ‘how’s of Judaism. Currently Distance Learning with Zoom! Our students want to be here!

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.
