MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

Dear Friends,

In the concluding portion of the Book of Numbers, we read about the 42 encampments of the Jewish people in their journey to the Promised Land.

Interestingly, the Torah refers to these encampments as 42 steps in leaving Egypt. Although only the first encampment technically involved leaving Egypt, because their goal was to arrive in the Holy Land, until that goal was realized, they were still in the process of leaving Egypt.

In our daily lives we are also in the constant process of leaving “Egypt” — the limitations and hindrances we experience in our service of G-d. And every step we take is part of the process, eventually arriving at our goal of being truly free!

Shabbat shalom.

 SHABBOS NEWS & UPCOMING EVENTS
We ARE Open for Services this Week - Soup & Challah info included

Minyan Needed Saturday Night @ 9:05pm – Please Commit

Please be advised that a Minyan is needed Saturday night so Len Hyman can say Kaddish for his father’s Yarzeit. The service will take about 15 minutes. If you are able to help with this important Mitzvah please respond as soon as possible to this message. Thank you in advance!

Kiddush Sponsor(s)

This week’s Kiddush is being sponsored by Miriam Reisman in loving memory of our honored Gabbai Harold Reisman in commemoration of his Yarzeit. It is also being sponsored by Len Hyman in memory of his father on his Yarzeit and the Mintz Family in memory of Marcus Mintz's Yarzeit. Everyone is invited and encouraged to join us for this enjoyable weekly event.

Sponsor a Kiddush – August Sponsors Needed

We have resumed the weekly Kiddush (Yay!!!). Those who wish to sponsor a Kiddush should reach out. Basic Kiddush sponsorship starts at $180 and goes up depending on how elaborate the menu. We will practice additional safety protocols so as to ensure an appropriate environment for the Kiddush.

Special Shabbat THIS Week

Several things are happening this Shabbat. In addition to our usual celebration of the holy day we will also celebrate Rosh Chodesh, the new month. There will be more about this month below. It is also Shabbat Chazak, meaning the Shabbat on which we complete a Book of the Torah, in this case, the Book of Numbers. Together we will proclaim, “Chazak! Chazak! Vi’Nitchazaik!” This means ‘Stronger! Stronger! We will all become stronger!’

Menachem Av – The Month of Av

This month is called Menachem Av. Av is the month during which both Holy Temples were destroyed, the first by the Babylonians and the second by the Romans. The Ninth of Av, called Tisha B’Av in Hebrew, is one week from Saturday evening through Sunday night (fast is from July 17th  at 7:58pm – 18th at 8:25pm), and marks the day that we commemorate the destruction of the Temples. Additional calamaties also struck our people throughout the years on the Ninth of Av, like the decree against the spies for their negative report and even the Spanish Inquisition began on that day. For more information follow this link: https://www.chabad.org/search/results.asp?searchword=Tisha+Bi%27Av&x=46&y=7#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=Tisha%20Bi'Av&gsc.page=1.

Other special observances during this time of year as we mourn our state of exile include not buying new clothes or wearing freshly laundered clothing, not luxuriating as we bathe, not listening to music, not getting married, not getting haircuts not eating meat or drinking wine except on Shabbos. On the Ninth of Av itself we sit lower to the floor (like someone sitting shiva), we recite the Book of Lamentations (Megillat Eicha), we may not eat, drink, bathe, use lotions or creams, wear leather shoes, or engage in marital relations. Many will sleep on one less pillow than usual. We may not learn Torah, except the laws of Tisha B’Av or laws of mourning, and we only put Tefillin on in the afternoon, not in the morning, which is when they are typically put on. The fast is about the same length as Yom Kippur.

As sad as this time of the year and this particular day is there is one uplifting concept worth mentioning. In the Talmud we learn that Moshiach will be born on the Ninth of Av. What this may mean is that the concept of the ultimate redemption was born on the day of the destruction. Even in the most dire of circumstances we must always be optimistic and have faith that things WILL get better!

Jewish Art Calendar

We are currently preparing our amazing Jewish Art Calendar for print. If you would like your special dates included please respond to this message for further information.

We are looking for a sponsor for this year’s edition. It will be absolutely stunning and the merit of dedicating it is profound! We are also looking for people who want to place ads in the Calendar. Each year we have been getting more sponsors so please get back to us asap if you wish to be included. The deadline for dedications/ads is the end of July. Please contact the office for further information.

Updated Guidance from the CDC

According to the latest guidance the CDC has stated that those who have been fully vaccinated do not have to wear masks indoors. With this being said we welcome those who feel more comfortable wearing masks to keep wearing them. If you are sick please do NOT come to shul until you feel better. If you have not yet been fully vaccinated please wear your mask and maintain your social distancing. Everyone should be mindful of what they touch and wash their hands regularly. We are asking everyone to be on the honor system. If you have not been fully vaccinated please act according to the rules previously stated.

There has been a spike in a variant of the coronavirus, which has also affected those who have been vaccinated. As such we are strongly recommending that everyone wear a mask while in shul. Those who have not been vaccinated MUST wear a mask. We must continue to be very careful.

We thank you for your patience, understanding, and cooperation!

Public Service Announcement – Let’s Work TOGETHER to Maintain OUR Shul

We have a beautiful shul. Everyone agrees. It is not easy to maintain everything, but we work hard to keep things clean and in good working order. We need your help.

Our sanctuary is graced with gorgeous, custom made, stained glass windows. These windows MUST be kept in pristine condition. Please respect the windows by only looking and never touching them. G-d forbid, they can easily be scratched if we are not careful. Also, please do not put ANY objects (cups, books, tissues etc.) on the window sills as it detracts from the windows.

Our custom-built furniture from Israel is as precious as it looks. People have put down cups (full and empty) on the partitions and the shelves. This is inappropriate. Children cannot sit on or climb on the furnishings – other than sitting in the pews as they were designed to be used. No exceptions.

Please put away your own Talis and prayer books, and replace the book racks when done using them. Please throw away your own garbage.

If we can all work together we will keep our shul beautiful!

THANK YOU for your understanding and cooperation.

Soup and Challah Going Forward

We will still be offering Soup and Challah to those who request it. We will not be delivering it if no request was made. Often times we will need people to pick it up themselves from shul, depending on the volunteer drivers’ status. Our focus is now to have people join us at shul so we can enjoy Kiddush TOGETHER!

Our A Team is busy preparing Challahs for the community as this is being written (and THANK YOU to our amazing donors for making that happen!). However, we are facing a big challenge as we need angels to deliver the fruit of our ovens to our hungry constituents. If you are ready, willing, and able to assist please respond to this message or contact the Rebbetzin to volunteer ASAP. G-d bless you!

*Limited Soup and Challah this week. Those who live near Chabad at La Costa are welcome to let us know if you want some delicious Challah and/or Chicken Soup delivered to you. There will be Challah and Soup. If you can help with deliveries, reach out to Kayla or Nechama.

Please note that all food is prepared and delivered using recommended safeguards.

Sponsors Appreciated (And Needed)

These are extraordinary times many people are reaching out for help and, Baruch Hashem / thank G-d, we are HERE to help! ‘We’ means YOU and US, TOGETHER. It is an amazing partnership that we have!

A very special thank you goes out to our “Super Sponsor” Channah Hale who has continuously stepped forward helping us to maintain this service!

We are extremely grateful to those who have reached out to help fund us, enabling us to serve others. Thank you to our amazing volunteer drivers - you can volunteer to deliver Soup and Challah!

Note About Sponsorships

You may have noticed that we seek multiple sponsors for the Challah, Soup, and Torah classes. We do this because we need to find ways to cover our budgetary shortfall that has been caused by the coronavirus. The donations coming to the shul have been dramatically reduced. We greatly appreciate those of you who are still supporting us! G-d bless you! We greatly appreciate your understanding as we seek ways of propping up the income necessary to keep things afloat. Your ideas about additional income streams are likewise greatly appreciated!

A Word of Torah
Living with the Times

Parshiot Matot – Maasay (Tribes and Travels)

By: Rabbi Yeruchem Eilfort

This week we read a double portion of Matot – Maasay, which translates as Tribes and Travels. The first portion begins by mentioning the Tribes of Israel. The second portion recounts the forty-two encampments of the Children of Israel during their forty-year sojourn in the desert; from the time they left Egypt until the time they were poised to enter the Holy Land.

When the Torah refers to the 12 Tribes it sometimes uses the Hebrew word ‘Shevatim’ and occasionally uses the word ‘Matot’. The singular form of each word is Shayvet and Matah.

The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson of righteous memory, asks, “What is the difference between the words and what does this difference teach us?”

Each word not only means ‘tribe’ but it also means ‘branch’. The connection between a tribe and a branch is fairly obvious, as tribes are disparate parts that come from the same source just as branches are. But we find that there are different types of branches; one kind is when the branch is still attached to the tree and/or still has the sap within it, and the other is when it is separate from the tree and the sap has dried out. In the first instance the branch is still supple while in the second instant it has become rigid.

The word Matot, in our portion, is the latter type of branch. It represents the idea that the branch has been separated from the tree and a rigidity has set in. This, at first glance, seems to have a negative connotation when discussing the Jewish people. Emphasizing the fact that they were separated from the Tree (in the metaphor G-d is the Source that we are alluding to) does not seem to be a positive. Intimating that the inner sap has dried and the branch has become rigid also does not seem very positive. This means that the presence of the sap is less discernable, or in the analogue the life-giving sap which emanates from the Almighty, meaning the life force of the Jew, has largely dried up.

But in fact, the Rebbe explains, there can also be a positive to be gleaned from this.

The Matah is much less likely to bend than the Shayvet. Sometimes rigidity is a positive attribute. The Jewish people are described as an ‘Am kishei oref,’ a stiff necked people. That means that we can be very stubborn. While stubbornness can often be considered a serious character flaw there are times when it can be a great character trait. For instance, when one’s neighbors worship idols or embrace some other evil action, and even put pressure on the Jew to engage in such activity, stubbornly clinging to Jewish ethics is a virtue.

We can now understand the connection of these two portions. The (unbending) Tribes of Israel would embark on numerous travels during their forty years in the desert. During that time they would be faced with numerous challenges, hardships, and negative influences. There is no doubt that sometimes the best approach is a ‘bend but do not break’ attitude. There are also times, however, when we must remain rigidly opposed and refuse to compromise our morals. Sometimes, as Jews, we must proactively reject the evil that we see. Often this will be an unpopular position. Nonetheless, we must rigidly and stubbornly reject evil, even popular evil.

It is precisely this approach that enabled our people to navigate the difficulties of the desert and overcome the challenges of inhabiting the Holy Land. It is this approach that will enable us to successfully navigate the harsh tests currently facing our community and nation!

Wishing everyone an uplifting, joyous, and HEALTHY Shabbos!

Haftarah of Matot-Mas’ei / Rosh Chodesh / Three Weeks of Mourning

The special Haftarah for the 3 Weeks of Mourning is read this Shabbos and the first and last passage of the Rosh Chodesh Haftarah is added. The Artscroll (Stone) Chumash gives the locations: Jeremiah 2:4 - 28, 3:4, and 4:1-2

Need a Minyan?

If you need a Minyan to say Kaddish please give the office at least a few days’ notice. We are happy to provide this important service, but it takes time to arrange enough participants to assure the quorum is present. Please email  [email protected] your request.

Shabbat Services with Meaning & Joy

Every Saturday we get together to celebrate the holy Shabbat in song and prayer. Our services are both traditional and user-friendly, as we fully recognize that not everyone has experience Davening (praying) in a traditional setting. What those who have joined have found is that the atmosphere in our synagogue is conducive to meaningful meditation. A knowledge of Hebrew is not necessary to participate. In fact, the only thing that is needed is the desire to learn and to connect to the Almighty. It is an enriching experience not to be missed! Shabbat services begin at 10am and conclude at approximately 12:30pm and are followed by a wonderful community lunch. There is no cost to attend and reservations are not needed.

Pay-What-You-Can-Membership

We want the membership experience to be positive. We want you to feel GOOD about giving. Yes, we have suggested donations, but you should give what you feel you can afford. If you cannot comfortably give the suggested amount THAT IS OK. If you can give more than the suggested amount, THANK YOU, IT IS APPRECIATED! We love and appreciate your participation, and that is that. Please fill out our Membership form online by logging onto: www.ChabadatLaCosta.com/Membership.

Create Your Jewish Legacy Plan for the Future - NOW

We have been blessed with life! Yet, we know that no one lives forever. This begs the question, “What will your legacy be?” Most of us have children, and they certainly should figure prominently into our plans. But our children are only a part of what we leave behind. Just as we endeavor to give Tzedakah generously, so as to selflessly make the world a better place while we are alive, so too we need to make sure that we leave a percentage of our estates for the benefit of others. Judaism tells us that it is incumbent upon us to leave the world better than when we found it. We do this by giving Tzedakah.

We can help.

Chabad has partnered with the Jewish Community Foundation in the creation of our Legacy Circle "Generation to Generation - Ensuring a Jewish Tomorrow, Today".  Many people do not prepare appropriately for the inevitable. They do not leave a will, or even if they do it is not consistent with Jewish Law. If one wants his body to be handled with the respect and care mandated by Jewish Law or if one wants the funeral service conducted according to Jewish Law, it must be arranged in advance. Don’t leave these critical details to luck!

Contact Rabbi Eilfort for a private appointment so these important matters can be handled how you want.

Memorial Plaques & Tree of Life Plaques Available

Our beautiful Memorial Boards have been installed. We specifically designed our custom-built bookcases to ‘frame’ each of the boards. The first Memorial Board was dedicated by the Brunelle Family, the second Board was dedicated by the Alter Family, and the new Board has been dedicated by Miriam Reisman in memory of her husband, Harold.

We are currently offering Memorial Plaques to those who wish to perpetually honor the memory of a loved one in a most dignified and permanent manner. Those who dedicate Memorial Plaques will also receive yearly reminders of the Yarzeit in the newsletter and in the calendar and the light on the Board will be illuminated each year on the Yarzeit. The donation is only $500 per Memorial Board plaque.

We also have a gorgeous Tree of Life dedicated by the Lieberman Family that has been ‘growing. The purpose of the plaques on the Tree of Life is to commemorate joyous occasions (like Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversaries, special birthdays, weddings etc.). The donation is $180 for a leaf on the Tree of Life.

Those who wish to participate should send an email to  [email protected], or call Rabbi Eilfort at 760-943-8891.

We are excited to designate a section of our Tree of Life to our Legacy Circle. Watch the Tree and see article above.

Shul Etiquette

Those who join us regularly for Shabbat services will agree that we have something very special going. The family-friendly atmosphere is unique and most inviting. We welcome everyone as though he/she is a long time member of the family.

At the same time it is important to remember that we are a synagogue. Our sanctuary is meant to be a place where it is conducive to finding inner peace and tranquility. That is why the Rabbis have many laws concerning the decorum of a shul.

It is appropriate to dress modestly and to dress somewhat formally in shul. Men should wear button down shirts, slacks (no jeans or shorts), with jackets and even ties when possible. Of course the head is to be kept covered at all times. Women should wear skirts that go past the knees and blouses with high neck lines and sleeves that cover the elbows. Married women should wear hats and the like.

Children must be supervised at all times by the parents except during Junior Congregation (11:30am). While we want the children to have a great time together it is also important that they do not become so wild and/or boisterous that they disturb those of us who are participating in the services.

We must remember that we should walk to shul and never park in the parking lot if there already eight cars parked. Finally, and we fully realize this goes against Jewish DNA, it is appropriate to come to shul ON TIME. While we know everyone is vying to be counted as the 10th, we are equally sure Hashem will give extra credit to those who come ON TIME at 10am (not to be confused with 11:30). We look forward to seeing you here!

Cell Phones & Chatting During Services

Needless to say the sanctuary on Shabbat or holidays is a place that must be conducive to reflective prayers and serenity. To help keep it this way, please refrain from engaging in any conversations during services and please do not bring in your cell phone. Thank you for your cooperation.

Critical Maintenance Issue – Your Cooperation Needed

PLEASE NOTE: The ONLY thing that may be flushed is toilet paper – NO EXCEPTIONS. This means tissue, baby wipes, paper towels, or any other product may NEVER be flushed, but instead must be disposed of in the provided trash receptacles.

THANK YOU for your cooperation!
